The behavior of money velocity in low and high inflation countries

This paper presents a general equilibrium model of money demand where the velocity of money changes in response to endogenous fluctuations in the interest rate. The parameter space can be divided into two subsets: one where velocity is constant as in standard cash-in-advance models, and another one where velocity fluctuates as in Baumol (1952). The model provides an explanation of why, for a sample of 79 countries, the correlation between the velocity of money and the inflation rate appears to be low, unlike common wisdom would suggest. The reason is the diverse transaction technologies available in different economies.

Lumen Dantis et Lumen Margaretae: el imaginario compartido por Dante Alighieri y Marguerite dicta Porete

In this article we compare the images used by Dante Alighieri with the ones used by her“heretical” contemporary Marguerite Porete (†1310) for expressing the final contact-vision of God. We will analyze the use of the images of light, the gradual ascent and the knot in bothauthors, putting it into the context of the theological doctrines about the visio Dei. This will allow us, in the first place, to claim a shared cultural background based in the conception of God as a visible being and, in the second, to discuss the historical implications ofheteredoxy/ortodoxy in the Commedia and the Mirouer.

Les traduccions al català de Marguerite Yourcenar: edicions i recepció crítica

Dins el marc d’un projecte més ampli que vol abastar l’anàlisi de les traduccions d’obres literàries escrites per dones, l'objectiu d’aquest article és establir l’estat de la qüestió de les traduccions al català de l’obra de Marguerite Yourcenar i oferir una primera aproximació a la recepció crítica que aquestes traduccions han tingut a la premsa catalana. Per això hem ordenat l’estudi en tres apartats: a) cronologia de les traduccions de Yourcenar al català; b) referències bibliogràfiques de les obres de Marguerite Yourcenar traduïdes al català i/o al castellà; c) recepció de les traduccions catalanes de Yourcenar a la premsa de Catalunya.

Source Department of Psychiatry, CHU Sainte Marguerite, Marseilles, France. Abstract About half of all bipolar patients have an alcohol abuse problem at some point of their lifetime. However, only one randomized, controlled trial of pharmacotherapy (valproate) in this patient population was published as of 2006. Therefore, we reviewed clinical trials in this indication of the last four years (using mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics, and other drugs). Priority was given to randomized trials, comparing drugs with placebo or active comparator. Published studies were found through systematic database search (PubMed, Scirus, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Science Direct). In these last four years, the only randomized, clinically relevant study in bipolar patients with comorbid alcoholism is that of Brown and colleagues (2008) showing that quetiapine therapy decreased depressive symptoms in the early weeks of use, without modifying alcohol use. Several other open-label trials have been generally positive and support the efficacy and tolerability of agents from different classes in this patient population. Valproate efficacy to reduce excessive alcohol consumption in bipolar patients was confirmed and new controlled studies revealed its therapeutic benefit to prevent relapse in newly abstinent alcoholics and to improve alcohol hallucinosis. Topiramate deserves to be investigated in bipolar patients with comorbid alcoholism since this compound effectively improves physical health and quality of life of alcohol-dependent individuals. In conclusion, randomized, controlled research is still needed to provide guidelines for possible use of valproate and other agents in patients with a dual diagnosis of bipolar disorder and substance abuse or dependence.
