This dissertation analyses the ways in which Anne Brontë challenges the romantic
marriage myth in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I argue that she does so by the showing the disastrous consequences of a marriage (that of Arthur and Helen) based on attraction and on the idea that a woman can save a fallen man. Although the novel ends with another marriage (Helen and Gilbert’s), I claim that on closer inspection the marriage has subversive elements to it, such as the fact that it is based on intellectual equality and character compatibility, instead of on social and economic equality
