Brideshead Revisited (1945) by Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966): the benefit of an Arcadian experience in confronting the human tragedy

As the frontispiece of Book One of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, the phrase ‘Et in Arcadia ego’ announces the author’s intention of making the classical Arcadian theme a key reference in a text that speaks of nostalgia for a joyful past in times marked by sadness and pain. However, an interpretation may be approached from several directions even within the classical tradition. Thus, without ignoring philological or artistic aspects of the topic, this article focuses on a close study of the author’s most original message: the notion that a youthful Arcadian experience confers on young men and women a ‘residue of happiness’ able to sustain their future development and assist them in dealing with the challenges of personal tragedy.

Defining the criteria for the evaluation of self-study multimedia language learning materials: do they facilitate or inhibit learner autonomy?

Durant els darrers anys, s’han publicat un gran nombre de materials multimèdia destinats a l’aprenentatge de llengües, la major part dels quals son CD-ROM dissenyats com a cursos per l’autoaprenentatge. Amb aquests materials, els alumnes poden treballar independentment sense l’assessorament d’un professor, i per aquest motiu s’ha afirmat que promouen i faciliten l’aprenentatge autònom. Aquesta relació, però, no es certa, com Phil Benson i Peter Voller 1997:10) han manifestat encertadament:(…) Such claims are often dubious, however, because of the limited range of options and roles offered to the learner. Nevertheless, technologies of education in the broadest sense can be considered to be either more or less supportive of autonomy. The question is what kind of criteria do we apply in evaluating them? En aquest article presentem una investigació conjunta on es defineixen els criteris que poden ser utilitzats per avaluar materials multimèdia en relació a la seva facilitat per permetre l’aprenentatge autònom. Aquests criteris son la base d’un qüestionari que s’ha emprat per avaluar una selecció de CD-ROM destinats a l’autoaprenentatge de llengües. Influenza A H1N1/2009 Infection in Pediatric Solid Organ Transplant Recipients

The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of pandemic influenza A H1N1 infection. A retrospective study was performed in pediatric patients with solid organ transplantation and confirmed influenza A H1N1/2009 infection from June to December 2009, diagnosed in two Spanish teaching. Forty-nine patients were included. Pneumonia was diagnosed in 4 patients (8.2%), and 3 of them required respiratory support. There were no related deaths. Antiviral treatment within 48 hours was associated with a lower likelihood of pneumonia (0/38, 0%) than treatment started after 48 hours (4/11, 36.3%) (p&0.01).

Herramientas y estrategias aplicables en niños con trastorno de conducta : Éxito en la redirección de conductas disruptivas en el aula

Las prácticas realizadas en el centro de Educación Especial Escuela Fasia Eixample ha permitido la observación directa del comportamiento de dos niños con trastorno de conducta y las conductas disruptivas que con más frecuencia interrumpen el correcto funcionamiento en un aula. Este contexto ha permitido la aplicación de varias herramientas y estrategias basadas en la perspectiva cognitivo-conductual para la redirección de estas conductas.

Rutas cinematográficas hacia la imagen platónica de la caverna

El objetivo de este artículo es demostrar la posibilidad de llegar también a la imagen platónica de l caverna desde el cine. En este sentido se puede hablar de referencias explícitas como en el caso de El conformista de B. Bertolucci o Shadowlands de R. Attenborough, si se tienen presentes las Crónicas de Narnia de C. S. Lewis- o The Picture of Dorian Gray -si se tiene presenta la novela de Oscar Wilde-, pero, en otras ocasiones, pese a que la influencia platónica no pueda ser demostrada, por ejemplo en The Truman Show, A Room with a View o Brideshead Revisited, podemos servirnos perfectamente de estas películas para guiar al público contemporáneo hacia aquella imagen platónica, ya que el mismo platón demuestra que se trata de una imagen aplicable y, en primer lugar, a su filosofía idealista.

Cinema Roads to the Platonic Image of the Cave

The aim of this article is to prove the real possibility of travelling intellectually to the Platonic image of the cave from different films. In this sense, one can speak of explicit references as in The Conformist by B. Bertolucci or in Shadowlands by R. Attenborough -if one bears in mind the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis- or The Picture of Dorian Gray ¿if one bears in mind the well-known O. Wilde¿s novel-, but, on other occasions, although the Platonic influence cannot be proved, for instance in The Truman Show, A Room with a View or Brideshead Revisited, one can perfectly think of these films in order to guide the contemporary audiences to that Platonic image, since Plato himself affirms that it deals with an image which can be easily applied and, in first place, to his idealistic philosophy.

Rutes cinematogràfiques vers la imatge platònica de la caverna

L'objectiu d'aquest article és demostrar la possibilitat d'arribar també a la imatge platònica de la caverna des del cinema. En aquest sentit es pot parlar de referències explícites, com en el cas de El conformista de B. Bertolucci, o Shadowlands -si es tenen presents les Cròniques de Nàrnia de C. S. Lewis- o The Picture of Dorian Gray -si es té present la novel·la d'Oscar Wilde-, però, en d'altres ocasions, tot i que la influència platònica no pugui ser demostrada, per exemple a The Truman Show, A Room with a View o Brideshead Revisited, podem emprar perfectament aquestes pel·lícules per menar el públic contemporani vers aquella imatge platònica, ja que el mateix Plató demostra que es tracta d¿una imatge aplicable i, en primer lloc, a la seva filosofia idealista.
