The Transtheoretical Model of behaviour change is currently one of the most promising models in terms of understanding and promoting behaviour change related to the acquisition of healthy living habits. By means of a bibliographic search of papers adopting a TTM approach to obesity, the present bibliometric study enables the scientific output in this field to be evaluated. The results obtained reveal a growing interest in applying this model to both the treatment of obesity and its prevention. Otherwise, author and journal outputs fit the models proposed by Lotka and Bradford, respectively.

Background Little is known about the types of ‘sit less, move more’ strategies that appeal to office employees, or what factors influence their use. This study assessed the uptake of strategies in Spanish university office employees engaged in an intervention, and those factors that enabled or limited strategy uptake. Methods The study used a mixed method design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with academics and administrators (n = 12; 44 ± 12 mean SD age; 6 women) at three points across the five-month intervention, and data used to identify factors that influenced the uptake of strategies. Employees who finished the intervention then completed a survey rating (n = 88; 42 ± 8 mean SD age; 51 women) the extent to which strategies were used [never (1) to usually (4)]; additional survey items (generated from interviewee data) rated the impact of factors that enabled or limited strategy uptake [no influence (1) to very strong influence (4)]. Survey score distributions and averages were calculated and findings triangulated with interview data. Results Relative to baseline, 67% of the sample increased step counts post intervention (n = 59); 60% decreased occupational sitting (n = 53). ‘Active work tasks’ and ‘increases in walking intensity’ were the strategies most frequently used by employees (89% and 94% sometimes or usually utilised these strategies); ‘walk-talk meetings’ and ‘lunchtime walking groups’ were the least used (80% and 96% hardly ever or never utilised these strategies). ‘Sitting time and step count logging’ was the most important enabler of behaviour change (mean survey score of 3.1 ± 0.8); interviewees highlighted the motivational value of being able to view logged data through visual graphics in a dedicated website, and gain feedback on progress against set goals. ‘Screen based work’ (mean survey score of 3.2 ± 0.8) was the most significant barrier limiting the uptake of strategies. Inherent time pressures and cultural norms that dictated sedentary work practices limited the adoption of ‘walk-talk meetings’ and ‘lunch time walking groups’. Conclusions The findings provide practical insights into which strategies and influences practitioners need to target to maximise the impact of ‘sit less, move more’ occupational intervention strategies.

Els materials de canvi de fase (PCM) han estat considerats per a l’emmagatzematge tèrmic en edificis des de 1980. Amb la inclusió dels PCM en plaques de guix, guix, formigó o altres materials que s’utilitzen per a cobrir les parets, l’emmagatzematge tèrmic pot ser part de les estructures fins i tot en edificis lleugers. Les noves tècniques de microencapsulació han obert moltes possibilitats en aplicacions per a edificis. El treball que es presenta és el desenvolupament d’un formigó innovador mesclat amb PCM microencapsulat, amb un punt de fusió de 26 oC i una entalpia de canvi de fase de 110 kJ/kg. El primer experiment va ser la inclusió del PCM microencapsulat dins del formigó i la construcció d’una caseta amb aquest nou formigó-PCM. Es va construir una segona caseta al costat de la primera amb les mateixes característiques i orientació però amb formigó convencional que serveix com a referència. Durant els anys 2005 i 2006 es va analitzar el comportament d’ambdues casetes i més tard es va edificar un mur Trombe a la paret sud de totes dues per investigar la seva influència durant la tardor i l’hivern.

Landscape classification tackles issues related to the representation and analysis of continuous and variable ecological data. In this study, a methodology is created in order to define topo-climatic landscapes (TCL) in the north-west of Catalonia (north-east of the Iberian Peninsula). TCLs relate the ecological behaviour of a landscape in terms of topography, physiognomy and climate, which compound the main drivers of an ecosystem. Selected variables are derived from different sources such as remote sensing and climatic atlas. The proposed methodology combines unsupervised interative cluster classification with a supervised fuzzy classification. As a result, 28 TCLs have been found for the study area which may be differentiated in terms of vegetation physiognomy and vegetation altitudinal range type. Furthermore a hierarchy among TCLs is set, enabling the merging of clusters and allowing for changes of scale. Through the topo-climatic landscape map, managers may identify patches with similar environmental conditions and asses at the same time the uncertainty involved.

Los servicios de salud son sistemas muy complejos, pero de alta importancia, especialmente en algunos momentos críticos, en todo el mundo. Los departamentos de urgencias pueden ser una de las áreas más dinámicas y cambiables de todos los servicios de salud y a la vez más vulnerables a dichos cambios. La mejora de esos departamentos se puede considerar uno de los grandes retos que tiene cualquier administrador de un hospital, y la simulación provee una manera de examinar este sistema tan complejo sin poner en peligro los pacientes que son atendidos. El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido el modelado de un departamento de urgencias y el desarrollo de un simulador que implementa este modelo con la finalidad de explorar el comportamiento y las características de dicho servicio de urgencias. El uso del simulador ofrece la posibilidad de visualizar el comportamiento del modelo con diferentes parámetros y servirá como núcleo de un sistema de ayuda a la toma de decisiones que pueda ser usado en departamentos de urgencias. El modelo se ha desarrollado con técnicas de modelado basado en agentes (ABM) que permiten crear modelos funcionalmente más próximos a la realidad que los modelos de colas o de dinámicas de sistemas, al permitir la inclusión de la singularidad que implica el modelado a nivel de las personas. Los agentes del modelo presentado, descritos internamente como máquinas de estados, representan a todo el personal del departamento de urgencias y los pacientes que usan este servicio. Un análisis del modelo a través de su implementación en el simulador muestra que el sistema se comporta de manera semejante a un departamento de urgencias real.

The statistical analysis of literary style is the part of stylometry that compares measurable characteristicsin a text that are rarely controlled by the author, with those in other texts. When thegoal is to settle authorship questions, these characteristics should relate to the author’s style andnot to the genre, epoch or editor, and they should be such that their variation between authors islarger than the variation within comparable texts from the same author.For an overview of the literature on stylometry and some of the techniques involved, see for exampleMosteller and Wallace (1964, 82), Herdan (1964), Morton (1978), Holmes (1985), Oakes (1998) orLebart, Salem and Berry (1998).Tirant lo Blanc, a chivalry book, is the main work in catalan literature and it was hailed to be“the best book of its kind in the world” by Cervantes in Don Quixote. Considered by writterslike Vargas Llosa or Damaso Alonso to be the first modern novel in Europe, it has been translatedseveral times into Spanish, Italian and French, with modern English translations by Rosenthal(1996) and La Fontaine (1993). The main body of this book was written between 1460 and 1465,but it was not printed until 1490.There is an intense and long lasting debate around its authorship sprouting from its first edition,where its introduction states that the whole book is the work of Martorell (1413?-1468), while atthe end it is stated that the last one fourth of the book is by Galba (?-1490), after the death ofMartorell. Some of the authors that support the theory of single authorship are Riquer (1990),Chiner (1993) and Badia (1993), while some of those supporting the double authorship are Riquer(1947), Coromines (1956) and Ferrando (1995). For an overview of this debate, see Riquer (1990).Neither of the two candidate authors left any text comparable to the one under study, and thereforediscriminant analysis can not be used to help classify chapters by author. By using sample textsencompassing about ten percent of the book, and looking at word length and at the use of 44conjunctions, prepositions and articles, Ginebra and Cabos (1998) detect heterogeneities that mightindicate the existence of two authors. By analyzing the diversity of the vocabulary, Riba andGinebra (2000) estimates that stylistic boundary to be near chapter 383.Following the lead of the extensive literature, this paper looks into word length, the use of the mostfrequent words and into the use of vowels in each chapter of the book. Given that the featuresselected are categorical, that leads to three contingency tables of ordered rows and therefore tothree sequences of multinomial observations.Section 2 explores these sequences graphically, observing a clear shift in their distribution. Section 3describes the problem of the estimation of a suden change-point in those sequences, in the followingsections we propose various ways to estimate change-points in multinomial sequences; the methodin section 4 involves fitting models for polytomous data, the one in Section 5 fits gamma modelsonto the sequence of Chi-square distances between each row profiles and the average profile, theone in Section 6 fits models onto the sequence of values taken by the first component of thecorrespondence analysis as well as onto sequences of other summary measures like the averageword length. In Section 7 we fit models onto the marginal binomial sequences to identify thefeatures that distinguish the chapters before and after that boundary. La deformación plástica puede inducir a la transformación de la austenita a martensita en los aceros inoxidables austeníticos metaestables. Para analizar este hecho, el inoxidable austenítico metaestable grado AISI 301 LN fue estudiado en dos condiciones diferentes: recocido y laminado en frío. En el primer caso, el acero era completamente austenítico, mientras que después de la laminación presentaba un importante porcentaje de α’-martensita. Se evaluó el cambio de fase cuando el acero es sometido a ensayos monotónicos y cíclicos, así como cuando ha sido modificada la superficie mediante el granallado o se han realizado tratamientos térmicos de reversión. Se utilizaron diferentes técnicas de caracterización microestructural para detectar y cuantificar la martensita, como microscopía óptica, difracción de rayos-X (DRX) y difracción de electrones retrodispersados (EBSD); como también de caracterización mecánica para evaluar el comportamiento de los aceros, trabajo esencial de fractura (TEF), conformabilidad, fatiga de alto número de ciclos (HCF) y nanoindentación. Los resultados mostraron un incremento en la resistencia mecánica del acero laminado en comparación al acero recocido; este hecho está relacionado con la presencia de martensita originada por la laminación. Sin embargo, en términos de deformación y endurecimiento el acero recocido presenta un mejor desempeño como consecuencia del elevado porcentaje de fase austenítica. Así mismo, revertir la martensita de laminación a austenita y refinar la austenita presente permite obtener un acero con una propiedades mecánicas similares a cuando esta en la condición laminado.

Business organisations are excellent representations of what in physics and mathematics are designated "chaotic" systems. Because a culture of innovation will be vital for organisational survival in the 21st century, the present paper proposes that viewing organisations in terms of "complexity theory" may assist leaders in fine-tuning managerial philosophies that provide orderly management emphasizing stability within a culture of organised chaos, for it is on the "boundary of chaos" that the greatest creativity occurs. It is argued that 21st century companies, as chaotic social systems, will no longer be effectively managed by rigid objectives (MBO) nor by instructions (MBI). Their capacity for self-organisation will be derived essentially from how their members accept a shared set of values or principles for action (MBV). Complexity theory deals with systems that show complex structures in time or space, often hiding simple deterministic rules. This theory holds that once these rules are found, it is possible to make effective predictions and even to control the apparent complexity. The state of chaos that self-organises, thanks to the appearance of the "strange attractor", is the ideal basis for creativity and innovation in the company. In this self-organised state of chaos, members are not confined to narrow roles, and gradually develop their capacity for differentiation and relationships, growing continuously toward their maximum potential contribution to the efficiency of the organisation. In this way, values act as organisers or "attractors" of disorder, which in the theory of chaos are equations represented by unusually regular geometric configurations that predict the long-term behaviour of complex systems. In business organisations (as in all kinds of social systems) the starting principles end up as the final principles in the long term. An attractor is a model representation of the behavioral results of a system. The attractor is not a force of attraction or a goal-oriented presence in the system; it simply depicts where the system is headed based on its rules of motion. Thus, in a culture that cultivates or shares values of autonomy, responsibility, independence, innovation, creativity, and proaction, the risk of short-term chaos is mitigated by an overall long-term sense of direction. A more suitable approach to manage the internal and external complexities that organisations are currently confronting is to alter their dominant culture under the principles of MBV.

If single case experimental designs are to be used to establish guidelines for evidence-based interventions in clinical and educational settings, numerical values that reflect treatment effect sizes are required. The present study compares four recently developed procedures for quantifying the magnitude of intervention effect using data with known characteristics. Monte Carlo methods were used to generate AB designs data with potential confounding variables (serial dependence, linear and curvilinear trend, and heteroscedasticity between phases) and two types of treatment effect (level and slope change). The results suggest that data features are important for choosing the appropriate procedure and, thus, inspecting the graphed data visually is a necessary initial stage. In the presence of serial dependence or a change in data variability, the Nonoverlap of All Pairs (NAP) and the Slope and Level Change (SLC) were the only techniques of the four examined that performed adequately. Introducing a data correction step in NAP renders it unaffected by linear trend, as is also the case for the Percentage of Nonoverlapping Corrected Data and SLC. The performance of these techniques indicates that professionals" judgments concerning treatment effectiveness can be readily complemented by both visual and statistical analyses. A flowchart to guide selection of techniques according to the data characteristics identified by visual inspection is provided.

The present study evaluates the performance of four methods for estimating regression coefficients used to make statistical decisions regarding intervention effectiveness in single-case designs. Ordinary least squares estimation is compared to two correction techniques dealing with general trend and one eliminating autocorrelation whenever it is present. Type I error rates and statistical power are studied for experimental conditions defined by the presence or absence of treatment effect (change in level or in slope), general trend, and serial dependence. The results show that empirical Type I error rates do not approximate the nominal ones in presence of autocorrelation or general trend when ordinary and generalized least squares are applied. The techniques controlling trend show lower false alarm rates, but prove to be insufficiently sensitive to existing treatment effects. Consequently, the use of the statistical significance of the regression coefficients for detecting treatment effects is not recommended for short data series.

En aquesta recerca es presenta el Pla d’Intervenció Motivacional (PIM) per subjectes que han de realitzar un programa formatiu (PF) en matèria de violència domèstica com a mesura penal alternativa. La finalitat principal d’aquest programa motivacional és que els usuaris iniciïn el PF en condicions òptimes per així augmentar l’eficàcia de la mesura i la seva reinserció en la societat. El PIM s’ha fonamentat en els models teòrics sobre motivació al canvi i en les tècniques terapèutiques que resulten més rellevants i eficaces, segons la revisió bibliogràfica exhaustiva feta en la recerca El PIM és un programa d’intervenció individualitzat amb una duració d‘entre 4 i 6 sessions, segons la intensitat de la seva aplicació. El programa vol ajudar als participants a identificar els aspectes positius derivats d’aquest canvi i les seves capacitats personals per aconseguir-lo. Per portar-ho terme, s’utilitza un estil terapèutic basat en el diàleg socràtic mitjançant el qual es treballen els aspectes següents: resolució de l’ambivalència, sentiment d’autoeficàcia, identificació d’objectius específics i desenvolupament d’un pla d’acció alternatiu. Mitjançant l’elaboració dels exercicis i tasques descrits en aquesta memòria, el professional guia a l’usuari per aconseguir augmentar la seva motivació per canviar la conducta problemàtica que ha estat objecte de la imposició de la mesura penal.

En este estudio se presenta el Plan de Intervención Motivacional (PIM) para sujetos que deben realizar un programa formativo (PF) en materia de violencia doméstica como medida penal alternativa. La finalidad principal de este programa motivacional es que los usuarios de medidas penales alternativas inicien el PF en condiciones óptimas para así aumentar la eficacia de la medida y su reinserción en la sociedad. El programa PIM se fundamenta en los modelos teóricos sobre motivación al cambio y en las técnicas terapéuticas que resultan más relevantes y eficaces, según la revisión bibliográfica exhaustiva llevada a cabo en la investigación. El PIM es un programa de intervención individualizada de una duración de entre 4 y 6 sesiones, según la intensidad de su aplicación. El programa tiene como objetivo ayudar a los participantes a identificar los aspectos positivos derivados del cambio y sus capacidades personales para llevarlo a cabo. Para ello, emplea un estilo terapéutico basado en el diálogo socrático mediante el cual se trabajan los aspectos siguientes: resolución de la ambivalencia, sentimiento de auto eficacia, identificación de objetivos específicos y desarrollo de un plan de acción alternativo. Mediante la elaboración de los ejercicios y tareas descritos en esta memoria el profesional guía al usuario para aumentar su motivación para cambiar la conducta problemática objeto de la imposición de la medida penal.
