Sobre los orígenes de la industrialización en el sector alimentario: Cataluña, 1880-1935

Hoy en día las industrias alimentarias ocupan un lugar destacado en la reproducción de la actividad económica. Además de centralizar la elaboración de aquellos productos y articular al conjunto del sector agroalimentario, aquellas industrias condicionan aspectos importantes de las políticas económicas nacionales y, estrechamente conectadas con las nuevas empresas biotecnológicas, configuran una de las líneas de actividad más innovadoras. En el caso de la historiografía española, las aportaciones realizadas hasta ahora han sido sobre todo de tipo sectorial y no han alterado demasiado las interpretaciones tradicionales. Como resultado de estos trabajos podemos concluir, por tanto, que en el momento actual conocemos relativamente bien la evolución de las principales industrias alimentarias en España desde el siglo XIX, pero que todavía no hemos integrado los resultados alcanzados en un nuevo marco interpretativo. En el presente artículo discutiré inicialmente estos planteamientos y destacaré, a partir de las investigaciones realizadas, aquellos aspectos de las nuevas propuestas interpretativas que me parecen más sugerentes. Seguidamente aplicaré estas propuestas al caso español, tomando como referencia el desarrollo que experimentaron diversas industrias alimentarias en Cataluña entre la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y la década de 1930.

The Difficult and tortuous path of agricultural cooperative networks in spain, 1890-1935

The rural associationism developed from the last decades of the XIX century could be consider as an answer of the agriculturists to the increasing integration of agriculture in the market, and to the effects of the Great Depression. In the case of Spain, the initiatives in this sense arose with certain delay in relation to the countries of Western Europe. The beginning of the Spanish cooperativism is closely bound to the Law of 1906. It granted the agrarian cooperatives with fiscal exemptions and other types of supports to the associates, although the process did not really accelerate until the promulgation of the law regulation in 1908.

The Adoption of agricultural credit cooperativism in Spain (1890-1935) : solidarity from below?

The spread of agrarian credit cooperativism in Spain (1890-1934) was done under a variety of ideological and economic orientations. This article focuses on the construction of a few tools and indicators to explain the characteristics of agricultural credit cooperatives. An analysis of financial operations of rural savings banks is related with socio-political aspects that influenced their development; This analysis helps us to explain the relative success of German credit cooperative models adopted in the context of Spanish agriculture, as happened on European periphery.

Ben especialment els seus estudis sobre el rei Ferran el Catòlic i el conflicte remença, a qui va dedicar bona part de la seva activitat investigadora. Ferran Rahola i Auguet va néixer a Girona el 14 de maig de 1914, fill primogènit de l'escriptor Carles Rahola i Llorens i de Rosa Auguet i Farró. Va viure i estudiar a la ciutat durant la seva infantesa i joventut, i després de cursar el batxillerat a l'institut va ingressar a estudiar magisteri a l'Escola Normal de Girona. Va iniciar els seus estudis el curs 1932-33 amb l'anomenat Pla Professional de 1931, el qual ha estat, en opinió deis estudiosos, el millor que han tingut les escoles normals d'Espanya, i responia al projecte global educatiu republicà, un dels pilars bàsics de la formació inicial de mestres. La serie editada por la Universidad de Murcia, especializada en trabajos sobre la antigüedad tardía y cristianismo, publica este nuevo libro que aborda la presencia de Bizancio en Hispania. Se trata de un tema de larga trayectoria historiográfica en la investigación histórica en España, que desde el estudio de M. Vallejo Girvés en 1993 se ha visto renovado y enriquecido con nuevas líneas interpretativas que persiguen la contextualización de las referencias aportadas por las fuentes escritas y, al mismo tiempo, la ampliación de las perspectivas de estudio con diversos argumentos de análisis, como es la discusión abierta en torno al componente social del proceso.

Morphometric relationhip in the Chaetognath Sagitta setosa Muller 1847: within population versus between population variability.

Sagitta setosa is a neritic Chaetognath exhibiting a discontinuous geographic distribution. To assess the influence of its discontinuous geographic distribution on morphometric variability between isolated populations, we conducted a biometric study of S. setosa from three different locations: Goteborg and Plymouth (North Atlantic) and Barcelona ( Western Mediterranean). Out results do indicate some disparity between the populations that is reflected not in size differences, largely determined by water temperature, but in shape (body proportions).

The Spanish Infrastructure Stock, 1844-1935

This paper presents the first estimates of Spanish infrastructure stock and investment for the period 1845-1935. Several sources and techniques have been used in the estimation, and the new series are reasonably reliable to the standards of historical statistics. Two distinct periods may be distinguished in the series: the years before 1895 (characterized by the prominence of railroads) and the period 1895-1935 (when most investment was addressed to other assets). The new series allow a preliminary comparison of the Spanish infrastructure endowment with that of the most advanced countries, showing a gradual process of convergence before 1936.

Infrastructure and Economic Growth in Spain, 1845-1935

Between the mid-nineteenth century and the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Spain undertook a sustained process of economic growth and structural change, but was unable to converge with the core European economies.1 The reasons behind Spain"s failure to converge have been a subject of debate among historians for decades. 2 This dissertation aims to analyze the role played by infrastructure in Spanish economic growth during that period, and tries to find out to what extent the potential shortage or inadequacy of the Spanish infrastructure endowment was one of the factors to blame for the country"s nonconvergence. The dissertation draws on recent research on the economic impact of infrastructure, and on the numerous attempts to measure that impact which have been undertaken in the wake of David Aschauer"s work on the United States.

Infrastructure Investment and Spanish Economic Growth, 1850-1935

This paper analyzes the impact of infrastructure investment on Spanish economic growth between 1850 and 1935. Using new infrastructure data and VAR techniques, this paper shows that the growth impact of local-scope infrastructure investment was positive, but returns to investment in large nation-wide networks were not significantly different from zero. Two complementary explanations are suggested for the last result. On the one hand, public intervention and the application of non-efficiency investment criteria were very intense in large network construction. On the other hand, returns to new investment in large networks might have decreased dramatically once the basic links were constructed.
