Energy transfer mechanism and Auger effect in Er3+ coupled silicon nanoparticle samples

We report a spectroscopic study about the energy transfer mechanism among silicon nanoparticles (Si-np), both amorphous and crystalline, and Er ions in a silicon dioxide matrix. From infrared spectroscopic analysis, we have determined that the physics of the transfer mechanism does not depend on the Si-np nature, finding a fast (< 200 ns) energy transfer in both cases, while the amorphous nanoclusters reveal a larger transfer efficiency than the nanocrystals. Moreover, the detailed spectroscopic results in the visible range here reported are essential to understand the physics behind the sensitization effect, whose knowledge assumes a crucial role to enhance the transfer rate and possibly employing the material in optical amplifier devices. Joining the experimental data, performed with pulsed and continuous-wave excitation, we develop a model in which the internal intraband recombination within Si-np is competitive with the transfer process via an Auger electron"recycling" effect. Posing a different light on some detrimental mechanism such as Auger processes, our findings clearly recast the role of Si-np in the sensitization scheme, where they are able to excite very efficiently ions in close proximity to their surface. I would like to thank Pierre Moret for his praises -which I certainly do not deserve- as well as for his valuable comments and criticisms. An intellectual discussion with such a prominent scholar is a satisfying experience, even if I do not wholly agree with his opinions. His reactions are related to three different topics: the definition of the geographical area covered in my article; the role of population increase in social evolution and the role of migrations.

El Segle de Pierre Vilar

Tot i que els interessos de Pierre Vilar, en el curs de la seva llarga vida professional, van ser molt més amplis, em penso que no és cap exageració afirmar que el segle XVIII fou el seu segle. En tot cas, el que segur que no és exagerat és dir que els investigadors catalans sobre el segle XVIII han estat aquells sobre qui la influència de l’obra de Vilar més s’ha fet sentir. Aquest fet és fàcil d’explicar. En primer lloc, perquè va ser la documentació del segle XVIII la que Pierre Vilar va explorar i treballar de primera mà en els arxius i la que va alimentar el miler de pàgines dels volums tercer i quart –segon i tercer si pensem en l’edició francesa original– de la seva voluminosa tesi doctoral. En segon lloc, perquè en aquest segle Vilar va cercar-hi els fonaments de les societats contemporànies. De fet, i no podia ser d’altra manera tenint en compte el mètode d’anàlisi històrica de Pierre Vilar, la recerca empírica sobre el segle XVIII català va fer-li plantejar el “problema” històric dels “fonaments econòmics de les estructures nacionals”

La obra histórica de Pierre Vilar ha estado siempre vinculada a su preocupación por el presente y el porvenir de las sociedades humanas. Desde esta perspectiva, Vilar centró gran parte de sus ocupaciones historiográficas en entender el cambio histórico, siendo el nacimiento del capitalismo uno de sus temas centrales al posibilitarle la comprensión globalizadora de la transmutación de un modelo de sociedad a otro. En este sentido, su obra magna sobre Cataluña, serviría para demostrar que ésta tuvo su particular forma de insertarse en el capitalismo y que en medio de las controversias políticas sobre el hecho nacional no había que olvidar tan importante circunstancia.

This book is the result of a one-year seminar series"Islam médiéval d"Occident (VIIe-XVe)", held at the Colegio de España in Paris in 2006-07 by the Association des doctorants en histoire des mondes musulmans médievaux (Diwan http://diwan.hypotheses.org), and a second volume focusing on Arabization is expected (p. 33). The contributors" experience, alongside their university and research backgrounds, have led to the publication of articles of an outstandingly high level throughout this book. This scholarly achievement is combined with a thought-provoking theoretical framework, where Arabization and Islamization give a common theme to the proceedings, which are developed in four parts.
