1st National Accessiblity Plan 2004-2012: achieving equal opportunities and full participation through design for all

According to official statistics, disabled people in Spain number 3.5 million and make up 8.8% of the Spanish population. This group of people are increasingly being recognised as members of society with equal rights, and many of their demands are gradually being transformed into solutions that benefit society as a whole. One example is improved accessibility. Accessible built environments are more human and inclusive places, as well as being easier to get around. Improved accessibility is now recognised as a requirement shared by all members of society, although it is achieved thanks to the demands of disabled people and their representatives. The 1st National Accessibility Plan is a strategic framework for action aimed at ensuring that new products, services and built environments are designed to be accessible for as many people as possible (Design for All) and that existing ones are gradually duly adapted.

Temperament in Bach’s Well-tempered clavier: a historical survey and a new evaluation according to dissonance theory

After a historical survey of temperament in Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier by Johann Sebastian Bach, an analysis of the work has been made by applying a number of historical good temperaments as well as some recent proposals. The results obtained show that the global dissonance for all preludes and fugues in major keys can be minimized using the Kirnberger II temperament. The method of analysis used for this research is based on the mathematical theories of sensory dissonance, which have been developed by authors such as Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz, Harry Partch, Reinier Plomp, Willem J. M. Levelt and William A. Sethares

L'objecte d'aquest treball final del Màster d'Anàlisi Política de la UOC (2008) és fer una reflexió basada en casos de diversos països de característiques similars a Catalunya, seguida de propostes estratègiques i de decisions a prendre sobre les condicions i seguretats que podrien fer decantar la població catalana de sentiment nacional espanyol cap a un vot favorable a la independència en un referèndum sobiranista.

Traducció automàtica aplicada a les llengües de signes : estat de la qüestió

En aquest treball analitzem l’estat de la qüestió dels sistemes de traducció automàtica per a llengües de signes. Les principals diferències respecte als traductors que treballen exclusivament amb llengües orals es deriven del processament de la llengua de signes, amb les dificultats que comporten l’escassetat de documents escrits i la mancança d’un sistema d’escriptura normalitzat. Com que haurem de treballar amb dades gestuals i visuals, és necessari tenir en compte l’estat dels sistemes de reconeixement i síntesi dels signes de què disposem. També repassarem els sistemes de transcripció i anotació emprats en les llengües de signes, ja que les mancances en la descripció de les dades lingüístiques afectaran el resultat de la traducció. Per últim, analitzarem els diferents projectes que han treballat fins ara en la traducció automàtica de llengües de signes i intentarem establir els paràmetres bàsics per al desenvolupament d'un traductor per a la llengua de signes catalana.

Rechazo medidado por anticuerpos en el trasplante pulmonar: serie de 21 casos

El rechazo mediado por anticuerpos (RMA) es una entidad establecida en el trasplante de órgano sólido (TOS), especialmente en el renal o cardíaco pero con controversias en otros como trasplante pulmonar (TP). Veintiún TP de un total de 207 entre 1990 y octubre de 2012 presentaron RMA (10%); todos presentaron disfunción clínica del injerto y criterios anatomo-patológicos; 8 de 17 (47.1%) con tinción C4d positiva y 7 de 21 (33.3%) con anticuerpos donante específicos. El tratamiento específico administrado fue la combinación de plasmaféresis, inmunoglobulinas y rituximab. Cuatro pacientes (19%) fueron éxitus por RMA y 13 (62%) presentaron mejoría clínica y funcional.

A theory of optimal random crackdowns

An incentives based theory of policing is developed which can explain the phenomenon of random “crackdowns,” i.e., intermittent periods of high interdiction/surveillance. For a variety of police objective functions, random crackdowns can be part of the optimal monitoring strategy. We demonstrate support for implications of the crackdown theory using traffic data gathered by the Belgian Police Department and use the model to estimate the deterrence effectof additional resources spent on speeding interdiction.

Time-related improvement of survival in resectable gastric cancer: the role of Japanese-style gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy

Background: We investigated the change of prognosis in resected gastric cancer (RGC) patients and the role of radical surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: We retrospectively analyze the outcome of 426 consecutive patients from 1975 to 2002, divided into 2 time-periods (TP) cohort: Before 1990 (TP1, n = 207) and 1990 or after (TP2; n= 219). Partial gastrectomy and D1-lymphadenetomy was predominant in TP1 and total gastrectomy with D2-lymphadenectomy it was in TP2. Adjuvant chemotherapy consisted of mitomycin C (MMC), 10¿20 mg/m2 iv 4 courses or MMC plus Tegafur 500 mg/m2 for 6 months. Results: Positive nodes were similar in TP2/TP1 patients with 56%/59% respectively. Total gastrectomy was done in 56%/45% of TP2/TP1 respectively. Two-drug adjuvant chemotherapy was administered in 65%/18% of TP2/TP1 respectively. Survival at 5 years was 66% for TP2 versus 42%for TP1 patients (p < 0.0001). Survival by stages II, IIIA y IIIB for TP2 versus TP1 patients was 70 vs. 51% (p = 0.0132); 57 vs. 22% (p = 0.0008) y 30 vs. 15% (p = 0.2315) respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that age, stage of disease and period of treatment were independent variables. Conclusion: The global prognosis and that of some stages have improved in recent years with case RGC patients treated with surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy.

El present treball constitueix un estudi i una anàlisi sobre les dades obtingudes del buidatge dels manlleus recollits en dos números de la revista catalana Time Out Barcelona. L’objectiu és aprofundir en el tema dels préstecs i extreure algunes conclusions sobre els tipus d’unitats manllevades i el seu tractament.

Microstructure and magnetic properties of Ni50 Mn37 Sn13 Heusler alloy ribbons

The Heusler alloy Ni50 Mn37 Sn13 was successfully produced as ribbon flakes of thickness around 7-10 μm melt spinning. Fracture cross section micrographs in the ribbon show the formation of a microcrystalline columnarlike microstructure, with their longer axes perpendicular to the ribbon plane. Phase transition temperatures of the martensite-austenite transformation were found to be MS =218 K, Mf =207 K, AS =224 K, and Af =232 K; the thermal hysteresis of the transformation is 15 K. Ferromagnetic L 21 bcc austenite phase shows a Curie point of 313 K, with cell parameter a=0.5971 (5) nm at 298 K, transforming into a modulated 7M orthorhombic martensite with a=0.6121 (7) nm, b=0.6058 (8) nm, and c=0.5660 (2) nm, at 150 K
