Declining labor force attachment and downward trends in unemployment and participation

The US labor market witnessed two apparently unrelated secular movements in thelast 30 years: a decline in unemployment between the early 1980s and the early 2000s,and a decline in participation since the early 2000s. Using CPS micro data and a stock-flow accounting framework, we show that a substantial, and hitherto unnoticed, factorbehind both trends is a decline in the share of nonparticipants who are at the margin ofparticipation. A lower share of marginal nonparticipants implies a lower unemploymentrate, because marginal nonparticipants enter the labor force mostly through unemployment,while other nonparticipants enter the labor force mostly through employment.

Labor market heterogeneity and the aggregate matching function

The matching function -a key building block in models of labor market frictions- impliesthat the job finding rate depends only on labor market tightness. We estimate such amatching function and find that the relation, although remarkably stable over 1967-2007,broke down spectacularly after 2007. We argue that labor market heterogeneities are notfully captured by the standard matching function, but that a generalized matching functionthat explicitly takes into account worker heterogeneity and market segmentation is fullyconsistent with the behavior of the job finding rate. The standard matching function canbreak down when, as in the Great Recession, the average characteristics of the unemployedchange too much, or when dispersion in labor market conditions -the extent to which somelabor markets fare worse than others- increases too much.

Les biblioteques populars de la Mancomunitat: un projecte polític i un projecte bibliotecari

Les biblioteques populars o públiques que impulsà la Mancomunitat de Catalunya, creades a imatge i semblança de les pioneres biblioteques anglosaxones, foren un modelinnovador dins del panorama bibliotecari d'Espanya. Al seu èxit contribuí tant la figura d'Eugeni d'Ors, responsable del projecte inicial que establí com havien de ser les biblioteques i quina havia de ser la formació del personal a l'Escola de Bibliotecàries, com la de Jordi Rubió, director de la Biblioteca de Catalunya, que el succeí com a director de la xarxa de biblioteques que implantà definitivament un sistema bibliotecari a Catalunya.

Estat de la qüestió sobre l'ús de les tecnologies de la informació als hospitals pediàtrics per tal d'educar en el lleure i pal·liar l'aïllament d'infants i adolescents i les seves famílies durant l'estada a l'hospital. A partir del grau d'implantació de les tecnologies, s'ha fet una anàlisi de diverses experiències d'arreu del món. S'han identificat dos models diferents pel que fa als objectius: els que centren la seva atenció en aspectes curriculars i els que potencien aspectes lúdics. Ambdós compten amb la implicació del personal sanitari vinculat als pacients i amb la figura del voluntari per a gestionar aquests serveis. Les principals diferències entre els projectes estudiats són les fonts de finançament, la tipologia de serveis que ofereixen i la naturalesa de les entitas que els promociona.

[eng] In the context of cooperative TU-games, and given an order of players, we consider the problem of distributing the worth of the grand coalition as a sequentia decision problem. In each step of process, upper and lower bounds for the payoff of the players are required related to successive reduced games. Sequentially compatible payoffs are defined as those allocation vectors that meet these recursive bounds. The core of the game is reinterpreted as a set of sequentally compatible payoffs when the Davis-Maschler reduced game is considered (Th.1). Independently of the reduction, the core turns out to be the intersections of the family of the sets of sequentially compatible payoffs corresponding to the different possible orderings (Th.2), so it is in some sense order-independent. Finally, we analyze advantagenous properties for the first player

El Memorial de Barcelona a Archer Milton Huntington, el fundador de la Hispanic Society of America, y a su esposa, la escultora, Anna Hyatt Huntington.

Barcelona en 1954 se anticipo a todos los homenajes, dedicando a Archer Milton Huntington (New York, 1870- Bathel, Connecticut, 1955) un monumento en reconocimiento a su excepcional figura como coleccionista e hispanófilo y también a su esposa, Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington (Cambridge, 1876 - California, 1973), excelente escultora que generosamente secundo los propósitos filo hispanos de su consorte. De esta manera Barcelona quería dejar constancia de su devoción y tributo a este reconocido coleccionista y filántropo americano que ayudo a vencer el llamado "Paradigma Prescott", historiador que había defendido las tesis sobre la leyenda negra española. A la vez que se reconocía que Archer M. Huntington ocupaba un lugar preeminente en la línea del hispanismo americano conjuntamente con los nombres de George Ticknor (1791 -1871), Washington Irving (1783-1859) y Henry Longfellow (1807-1882).

Un dibujo inédito de Rogelio de Egusquiza, copia del dibujo preparatorio de la Sibila Líbica de Miguel Ángel

Rogelio de Egusquiza (1845-1915) pintor y grabador, cosmopolita y wagneriano de pro, recogió en su obra tanto las lecciones de los clásicos, como las influencias de los artistas del momento que más admiraba: Messonier, Menzel o Fortuny, de cuyo cenáculo formó parte. Ya muy joven, a los 22 años, manifestó su estimación por los clásicos al pintar un cuadro representando a Miguel Ángel postrándose delante del cadáver de Vittoria Colonna , con el que obtuvo una mención honorífica de segunda clase en la Exposición Nacional de 1867. Una pintura -actualmente en paradero desconocido- citada por Beruete como propiedad de Dña. Consuelo Egusquiza, hermana del pintor y que, según transcripción de Carretero y Bedia, aparecía en el listado descriptivo de obras propiedad del pintor, realizado por sus descendientes con motivo de la reclamación que éstos hicieron a los distintos centros de recuperación organizados en la posguerra española. Y, si bien el motivo del cuadro evidencia un gran interés por la figura de Miguel Ángel, además, en el mismo listado aparece, como signo inequívoco de veneración hacia el genio renacentista, ¿una cabeza en bronce tamaño natural, mascarilla de Miguel Ángel?, el objeto de culto de los mitómanos novecentistas.

Francesc Puig: 1720-1797, i els cirurgians del seu temps

Aquest llibre de Josep M.Massons, cirurgià  ell mateix, ens explica les enormes dificultats que hi hagué en el projecte de reformes executat per Francesc Puig, una figura que es pot considerar el pioner de la cirurgia catalana actual.

La Topografía médica de Vic de Antonio Millet: 1798

En primer lloc, aquest llibre conté una traducció i transcripció de la Topografia Mèdica de Vic, d'Antoni Millet, de 1798. Aquesta transcripció es completa amb una investigació analítica i detallada del context cultural en què sorgiren les primeres topografies mèdiques al nostre país.El present document suposa el redescobriment d'una figura rellevant de la medicina catalana, Antoni Millet, de qui també es recull una segona obra entorn a una epidèmia que afectà la ciutat de Ripoll l'any 1790.

El doctor Joan Baptista Parcet i Fàbrega, metge de Sant Genís de Vilassar: una personalitat del Maresme del segle XIX

Aquest treball s'inscriu en una línia de treball recent que consisteix en recuperar figures rellevants de la medicina catalana que van desenvolupar la seva activitat professional fora de Barcelona, en aquest cas la figura del doctor Parcet i Fàbrega al Maresme, a Sant Genís de Vilassar.El llibre recull una recensió de tota la seva obra manuscrita (part d'ella era inèdita fins la publicació d'aquest llibre) i la citació breu de les seves obres aparegudes en revistes mèdiques de l'època. Finalment, també s'inclou la transcripció de la seva obra manuscrita que es guarda a l'Arxiu de la Reial Acadèmia de Catalunya.

Antoni Pujadas, metge i polític del segle XIX

L'autor d'aquesta biografia intenta estudiar la figura del metge Antoni Pujadas més enllà de la seva faceta més coneguda com l'introductor a Catalunya de la primera revolució psiquiàtrica assistencial i remodelador, fracassat, del balneari de la Puda de Montserrat. Més enllà d'això, l'autor ens descobreix un personatge inquiet amb ànsia de trascendir, que és movia en camps tan diversos com la política, el periodisme, les promocions socials o els negocis bancaris.
