Operator algebras: an informal overview

This article is an informal introduction to some classical results of the theory of operator algebras. It aims to illustrate the richness and diversity of possible applications of this topic.

Bernstein's problem on weighted polynomial approximation

We formulate a necessary and sufficient condition for polynomials to be dense in a space of continuous functions on the real line, with respect to Bernstein's weighted uniform norm. Equivalently, for a positive finite measure [lletra "mu" minúscula de l'alfabet grec] on the real line we give a criterion for density of polynomials in Lp[lletra "mu" minúscula de l'alfabet grec entre parèntesis].

Rank estimation of trajectory matrix in motion segmentation

A novel technique for estimating the rank of the trajectory matrix in the local subspace affinity (LSA) motion segmentation framework is presented. This new rank estimation is based on the relationship between the estimated rank of the trajectory matrix and the affinity matrix built with LSA. The result is an enhanced model selection technique for trajectory matrix rank estimation by which it is possible to automate LSA, without requiring any a priori knowledge, and to improve the final segmentation

Holomorphic maps between moduli spaces

We prove that every non-constant holomorphic map&em&M&/em&&sub&g,p&/sub&→ &em&M&/em&&sub& g',p'&/sub& between moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces is a forgetful map, provided that g ≥ 6 and g' ≤ 2g-2.

Implementació dels codis de Golay en el paquet matemàtic SAGE

La motivació del present treball va sorgir de la necessitat de descodificar els codis de Golay, un tipus de codis lineals perfectes, en el paquet matemàtic Sage. Sage és un paquet software de lliure distribució i en actual desenvolupament i popularització destinat a aglutinar les funcionalitats de part dels paquets d'anàlisi matemàtic, calculadors simbòlics i manipuladors algebraics propietaris com Mathematica, Matlab, Maple, Magma. En el document es descriurà la implementació realitzada, destacant-ne els aspectes més rellevants. Per a tal efecte, es donarà una introducció als codis lineals i als seus aspectes matemàtics tant des de la vessant de la definició com de les propietats; i al paquet Sage.

Fronts from complex two-dimensional dispersal kernels: theory and application to Reid's paradox

Bimodal dispersal probability distributions with characteristic distances differing by several orders of magnitude have been derived and favorably compared to observations by Nathan [Nature (London) 418, 409 (2002)]. For such bimodal kernels, we show that two-dimensional molecular dynamics computer simulations are unable to yield accurate front speeds. Analytically, the usual continuous-space random walks (CSRWs) are applied to two dimensions. We also introduce discrete-space random walks and use them to check the CSRW results (because of the inefficiency of the numerical simulations). The physical results reported are shown to predict front speeds high enough to possibly explain Reid's paradox of rapid tree migration. We also show that, for a time-ordered evolution equation, fronts are always slower in two dimensions than in one dimension and that this difference is important both for unimodal and for bimodal kernels

La teoría de Morales-Ramis y el algoritmo de Kovacic

En este art\'\i culo se presentan algunas aplicacionesde la teor\'\i a de Morales–Ramis en problemas de no integrabilidadde sistemas hamiltonianos cuya ecuaci\'on variacional normal a lo largode una curva integral particular es una ecuaci\'on diferencial lineal desegundo orden con coeficientes funciones racionales. La integrabilidadde la ecuaci\'on variacional normal es analizada mediante el algoritmode Kovacic.

Homotopy Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras

This paper provides an explicit cofibrant resolution of the operad encoding Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. Thus it defines the notion of homotopy Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras with the required homotopy properties. To define this resolution we extend the theory of Koszul duality to operads and properads that are defind by quadratic and linear relations. The operad encoding Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras is shown to be Koszul in this sense. This allows us to prove a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem for such an operad and to give an explicit small quasi-free resolution for it. This particular resolution enables us to describe the deformation theory and homotopy theory of BV-algebras and of homotopy BV-algebras. We show that any topological conformal field theory carries a homotopy BV-algebra structure which lifts the BV-algebra structure on homology. The same result is proved for the singular chain complex of the double loop space of a topological space endowed with an action of the circle. We also prove the cyclic Deligne conjecture with this cofibrant resolution of the operad BV. We develop the general obstruction theory for algebras over the Koszul resolution of a properad and apply it to extend a conjecture of Lian-Zuckerman, showing that certain vertex algebras have an explicit homotopy BV-algebra structure.

André spectral sequences for Baues-Wirsching cohomology of categories

We construct spectral sequences in the framework of Baues-Wirsching cohomology and homology for functors between small categories and analyze particular cases including Grothendieck fibrations. We also give applications to more classical cohomology and homology theories including Hochschild-Mitchell cohomology and those studied before by Watts, Roos, Quillen and others

Bounds for the Betti numbers of generalized Cohen-Macaulay ideals

Upper bounds for the Betti numbers of generalized Cohen-Macaulay ideals are given. In particular, for the case of non-degenerate, reduced and ir- reducible projective curves we get an upper bound which only depends on their degree.

Macaulay style formulas for sparse resultants

We present formulas for computing the resultant of sparse polyno- mials as a quotient of two determinants, the denominator being a minor of the numerator. These formulas extend the original formulation given by Macaulay for homogeneous polynomials.

On the depth of blowup algebras of ideals with analytic deviation one

Let I be an ideal in a local Cohen-Macaulay ring (A, m). Assume I to be generically a complete intersection of positive height. We compute the depth of the Rees algebra and the form ring of I when the analytic deviation of I equals one and its reduction number is also at most one. The formu- las we obtain coincide with the already known formulas for almost complete intersection ideals.
