This paper provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of the relationship between airport congestion and airline network structure. We find that the development of hub-and-spoke (HS) networks may have detrimental effects on social welfare in presence of airport congestion. The theoretical analysis shows that, although airline pro ts are typically higher under HS networks, congestion could create incentives for airlines to adopt fully-connected (FC) networks. However, the welfare analysis leads to the conclusion that airlines may have an inefficient bias towards HS networks. In line with the theoretical analysis, our empirical results show that network airlines are weakly infl uenced by congestion in their choice of frequencies from/to their hub airports. Consistently with this result, we con firm that delays are higher in hub airports controlling for concentration and airport size. We analyze the effect of research joint ventures (RJVs) on consumer welfare in an international context when collusion can occur. The main novelty of our analysis is to study the differentiated effect of domestic and international RJVs. The recent literature shows that RJVs with collusion harm consumers. However, our results introduce a qualifi cation to this statement: international RJVs with collusion might be bene ficial for consumers when internationalization costs are high. The EU and US competition policy advises against RJVs that facilitate collusion on the grounds of their expected negative effects. Our results suggest that antitrust authorities should distinguish between domestic and international RJVs and, in certain cases, be more benevolent with international RJVs. This paper performs an empirical Decomposition of International Inequality in Ecological Footprint in order to quantify to what extent explanatory variables such as a country’s affluence, economic structure, demographic characteristics, climate and technology contributed to international differences in terms of natural resource consumption during the period 1993-2007. We use a Regression- Based Inequality Decomposition approach. As a result, the methodology extends qualitatively the results obtained in standard environmental impact regressions as it comprehends further social dimensions of the Sustainable Development concept, i.e. equity within generations. The results obtained point to prioritizing policies that take into account both future and present generations. As a result of globalization and free trade agreements, international trade is enormously growing and inevitably putting more pressure on the environment over the last few decades. This has drawn the attention of both environmentalist and economist in response to the ever growing concerns of climate change and urgent need of international action for its mitigation. In this work we aim at analyzing the implication of international trade in terms of CO2 between Spain and its important partners using a multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model. A fully integrated 13 regions MRIO model is constructed to examine the pollution responsibility of Spain both from production and consumption perspectives. The empirical results show that Spain is a net importer of CO2 emissions which is equivalent to 29% of its emission due to production. Even though the leading partner with regard to import values are countries such as Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain, the CO2 embodied due to trade with China takes the largest share. This is mainly due to the importation of energy intensive products from China coupled with Chinese poor energy mix which is dominated by coal-power plant. The largest portion (67%) of the global imported CO2 emissions is due to intermediate demand requirements by production sectors. Products such as Motor vehicles, chemicals, a variety of machineries and equipments, textile and leather products, construction materials are the key imports that drive the emissions due to their production in the respective exporting countries. Being at its peak in 2005, the Construction sector is the most responsible activity behind both domestic and imported emissions.

Els avenços en tècniques de genotipat de polimorfismes genètics a gran escala estan liderant una revolució en el camp de l’epidemiologia genètica i la genètica de poblacions humanes. La informació aportada per aquestes tècniques ha evidenciat l’existència d’estructuracions poblacionals que poden augmentar l’error en els estudis d’associació a escala genòmica (GWAS, genome-wide association studies). Estudis recents han demostrat la presència d’aquestes estructuracions a nivell interregional i intrarregional a Europa. El present projecte ha avaluat el grau d’estructuració genètica en poblacions de la Península Ibèrica i altres regions del sudoest europeu (Itàlia i França) per quantificar l’impacte que aquesta potencial estructuració pot tenir en el disseny d’estudis d’associació GWAS i reconstruir la història demogràfica de les poblacions de la Mediterrània. Per aconseguir aquests objectius, s’han analitzat mostres de DNA de 770 individus de 26 poblacions de la Península Ibèrica, França, Itàlia i d’altres països de la Mediterrània. Aquestes mostres van ser genotipades per 240000 SNPs utilitzant l’array 250K StyI d’Affymetrix en el marc d’aquest projecte o mitjançant altres arrays d’Affymetrix en els projectes internacionals HapMap i POPRES. S’han realitzat anàlisis estadístiques incloent anàlisis de components principals, Fst, identitat per descendència, desequilibri de lligament, barreres genètiques, etc. Aquests resultats han permés construir un marc de referència de la variabilitat en aquesta regió, avaluar el seu impacte en estudis d’associació i proposar mesures per evitar l’increment de qualsevol tipus d’error (tipus I i II) en estudis nacionals i internacionals. A més, també han permés reconstruir la història de les poblacions humanes de la Mediterrània així com analitzar les seves relacions demogràfiques. Donada la duració limitada d’aquesta acció (24 mesos, d’octubre de 2010 a setembre de 2012), els resultats d’aquest projecte es troben actualment en fase de redacció i conduiran a diverses publicacions en revistes internacionals i a la preparació de comunicacions a congressos.

El IBB ha desarrollado un servidor de aplicaciones: http://revolutionresearch.uab.es para el análisis de microarrays. Estas microarrays las obtienen y las suben a la base de datos local los usuarios de la aplicación. En la presente memoria se detalla el proceso realizado para automatizar la subida de microarrays públicas a la base de datos local. Estas microarrays se obtendrán del NCBI. El proceso de descarga de microarrays se realizará cada dos meses y estará sincronizado con un proceso de descarga de genes marcadores de microarrays del NCBI. En la memoria también se describen las fases realizadas para crear la interfaz web para gestionar estas microarrays públicas y las modificaciones realizadas sobre el aplicativo web para permitir realizar análisis con estas microarrays.

Migration-related issues have, since approximately 2000, been the object of increased attention at the international level. This has led, among other things, to the production of international narratives, which aim both at understanding migration and at proposing policy recommendations on how to address it, with the objective of improving the governance of migration at the global level. But this implies overcoming dilemmas stemming from the diverging interests of states and other actors (like NGOs and the private sector). This article examines the way in which international migration narratives address skilled migration, which is characterised by some of the clearest political trade-offs between stakeholders. It argues that these narratives attempt to speak to all parties and conciliate contradictory arguments about what should be done, in order to discursively overcome policy dilemmas and create a consensus. While this is line with the mandate of international organizations, it depoliticises migration issues.

This paper analyzes the behavior of international capital flows by foreigners and domestic agents, especially during financial crises. We show that gross capital flows by foreigners and domestic agents are very large and volatile, especially relative to net capital flows. This is because when foreigners invest in a country domestic agents tend to invest abroad and vice versa. Gross capital flows are also pro-cyclical. During expansions, foreigners tend to bring in more capital and domestic agents tend to invest more abroad. During crises, there is retrenchment, i.e. a reduction in capital inflows by foreigners and an increase in capital inflows by domestic agents. This is especially true during severe crises and during systemic crises. The evidence can shed light on the nature of shocks driving international capital flows. It seems to favor shocks that affect foreigners and domestic agents asymmetrically -e.g. sovereign risk and asymmetric information- over productivity shocks.

We develop a model to analyse the implications of firing costs on incentives for R&D and international specialization. The Key idea is paying the firing cost, the country with a rigid labor market will tend to produce relatively secure goods, at a late stage of their product life cycle. Under international trade, an international product cycle emerges where, roughly, new goods are first produced in the low firing cost country will specialize in 'secondary innovations', that is, improvements in existing goods, while the low firing cost country will more specialize in 'primary innovation', that is, invention of new goods.

Mitjançant aquest projecte s’ha pogut: a) constatar l’escassa aplicació pràctica en els tribunals catalans del dret anglès; b) discutir els motius d’aquesta realitat judicial que s’aparta de les disposicions normatives previstes a la Llei d’Enjudiciament Civil 1/2000; c) plantejar solucions als problemes detectats, formulant una proposta de modificació normativa. Tot això s’ha materialitzat en 4 Ponències Internacionals presentades al “Congreso Internacional sobre Prueba Judicial” organitzat per les Facultats Jurídiques de les Universitats de Deusto, Comillas i Esade els 19 a 21 de juliol de 2010; 3 Comunicacions presentades a la Universidad de Salamanca en la “Jornada en Homenaje a la Profra. Mª. Carmen Calvo Sánchez”, el 25 de novembre de 2010; i un llibre col•lectiu de tots els membres integrants d’aquest projecte de recerca titulat “La prova del dret estranger: teoria i pràctica. Estudi de 30 casos reals”, publicat per l’editorial J.Mª. Bosch, la més antiga a Espanya i de reconegut prestigi i àmplia difusió en l’àrea del Dret Processal: es va crear l’any 1889 i ha publicat més de 300 llibres en aquesta àrea de coneixement.

This paper investigates the properties of an international real business cycle model with household production. We show that a model with disturbances to both market and household technologies reproduces the main regularities of the data and improves existing models in matching international consumption, investment and output correlations without irrealistic assumptions on the structure of international financial markets. Sensitivity analysis shows the robustness of the results to alternative specifications of the stochastic processes for the disturbances and to variations of unmeasured parameters within a reasonable range.

D'Aspremont and Jacquemin's (1988) model is extended to studyalternative configurations of research agreements in a two--country integratedworld economy. Under unambiguous conditions on spillovers we show that:1) Allowing national firms to cooperate in R\&D confers them an advantageover foreign rivals, an effect similar to R\&D subsidies. 2) In a policygame, each government would allow national cooperative agreements. 3) Contraryto other trade policies which lead to a ``prisoners' dilemma'' result,welfare in both countries increases when they both allow R\&D cooperation.4) Welfare is even higher if a generalized (international) coalition isformed.

This paper formally examines the implications of international consumptionrisk sharing for a panel of industrialized countries. We theoretically derivethe international consumption insurance proposition in a simple setup and showhow it should be modified in more complicated models. We empirically analyzethe implications of the theory for pairs of countries across frequencies of thespectrum and find that aggregate domestic consumption is almost completelyinsured against idiosyncratic real, demographic, fiscal and monetary shocksover short cycles, but that it covaries with these variables over medium andlong cycles. The cross equation restrictions imposed by the theory are, ingeneral, rejected. The policy implications of the results are discussed.

Foreign trade statistics are the main data source to the study of international trade.However its accuracy has been under suspicion since Morgernstern published hisfamous work in 1963. Federico and Tena (1991) have resumed the question arguing thatthey can be useful in an adequate level of aggregation. But the geographical assignmentproblem remains unsolved. This article focuses on the spatial variable through theanalysis of the reliability of textile international data for 1913. A geographical biasarises between export and import series, but because of its quantitative importance it canbe negligible in an international scale.

We study relative price behavior in an international business cyclemodel with specialization in production, in which a goods marketfriction is introduced through transport costs. The transporttechnology allows for flexible transport costs. We analyze whetherthis extension can account for the striking differences betweentheory and data as far as the moments of terms of trade and realexchange rates are concerned. We find that transport costs increaseboth the volatility of the terms of trade and the volatility of thereal exchange rate. However, unless the transport technology isspecified by a Leontief technology, transport costs do not resolvethe quantitative discrepancies between theory and data. Asurprising result is that transport costs may actually lower thepersistence of the real exchange rate, a finding that is in contrastto much of the emphasis of the empirical literature.
