Age effects, unobserved characteristics and hedonic price indexes: The Spanish car market in the 1990's

This paper computes and compares alternative quality-adjusted price indexes for new cars in Spain in the period 1990-2000. The proposed hedonic approach simultaneously controls for time-invariant unobserved product effects and time-variant unobserved quality changes, that are assumed to be captured by model age effects. The results show that the non-adjusted price index largely overstates the increase in the cost of living induced by changes in car prices and that previous evidence for this market have not measured the real extent of that bias, probably due to the omission of controls for unobservables. It is also shown that omitting age effects can also lead to misleading conclusions. The estimated price indexes give also some insights on what could have been the determinants of price evolution in the Spanish car market. La llengua de l'enemic com a llengua pròpia: cultures translatives del paisatge indígena nord-americà

This research paper seeks to bring into view the present-day situation of Native-American narrative in English. It is divided into four chapters. The first deals with the emergence of what we might call a Native-American narrative style and its evolution from 1900 up until its particularly forceful expression in 1968 with the appearance of N. Scott Momaday’s novel House Made of Dawn. To trace this evolution, we follow the chronology set forth by Paula Gunn Allen in her anthology Voice of the Turtle: American Indian Literature 1900-1970. In the second chapter we hear various voices from contemporary Native-American literary production as we follow Simon J. Ortiz’s anthology Speaking for the Generations: Native Writers on Writing. Noteworthy among these are Leslie Marmon Silko and Gloria Bird, alongside new voices such as those of Esther G. Belin and Daniel David Moses, and closing with Guatemalan-Mayan Victor D. Montejo, exiled in the United States. These writers’ contributions gravitate around two fundamental notions: the interdependence between human beings and the surrounding landscape, and the struggle for survival, which of necessity involves the deconstruction of the (post-)colonial subject. The third chapter deals with an anthology of short stories and poems by present-day Native-American women writers, edited by Joy Harjo and Gloria Bird and entitled Reinventing the Enemy’s Language: Contemporary Native Women’s Writings of North America. It too exemplifies personal and cultural reaffirmation on a landscape rich in ancestral elements, but also where one’s own voice takes shape in the language which, historically, is that of the enemy. In the final chapter we see how translation studies provide a critical perspective and fruitful reflection on the literary production of Native-American translative cultures, where a wide range of writers struggle to bring about the affirmative deconstruction of the colonialised subject. Thus there comes a turnaround in the function of the “enemy’s language,” giving rise also to the question of cultural incommensurability.

Mitjançant el mètode de treball terminològic proposat per la Teoria Comunicativa de la Terminologia (TCT) es realitza una anàlisi d'un corpus bilingüe ad hoc sobre Cultura de Pau per establir el mapa de la xarxa conceptual del terme "pau" i les seves col·locacions en castellà i anglès. Aquestes s'obtenen mitjançant un sistema d'extracció de terminologia. Aquest treball pretén ser una primera aproximació a la terminologia de la Cultura de Pau. L'estudi es realitza des d'un punt de vista interdisciplinari tenint en compte les aportacions teòriques procedents de la TCT, la lingüística de corpus i les xarxes conceptuals

Interpretación en los servicios públicos en el ámbito sanitario en la provincia de Barcelona

El nostre treball pretén observar com estan organitzats els serveis de TISSPP de l'àmbit sanitari de Barcelona. Amb aquesta finalitat, realitzem una observació indirecta detallada mitjançant entrevistes semi-estructurades tant a professionals de la salut, com al personal encarregat de gestionar aquests serveis. Els resultats obtinguts ens van permetre de descriure en què consisteixen els serveis de TISSPP dels centres estudiats, quin és el perfil dels seus usuaris, dels seus prestataris i dels professionals de la salut que els utilitzen. R&D cooperation between Spanish firms and scientific partners: what is the role of tertiary education?

This paper explores the factors that determine firm’s R&D cooperation with different partners, paying special attention on the role of tertiary education (degree and PhDs level) in facilitating the connection between the firms and the to scientific bodies (technology centres, public research centres and universities). Here, we attempt to answer two questions. First, are innovative firms that carry out internal and external R&D activities more likely to cooperate on R&D projects with other partners? Second, do Spanish innovative firms with a high participation of researchers with degrees or PhDs tend to cooperate more with scientific partners? To answer both questions we apply a three-dimensional approach on a firm level Panel Data with a sample of 4.998 manufacturing and services Spanish firms. First, we run a complementary test between external R&D acquisition and skilled research workers and find that firms which carry out external R&D activities obtain a greater return on R&D cooperation when they have skilled workers in R&D, especially in high-tech manufactures and KIS services. Second, we carry out a 2-step tobit model to estimate, in the first stage, the determinants that explain whether Spanish innovative firms cooperate or not; and in the second stage the factors that affect the choice of partners. And third, we apply an ordered probit model to test the marginal effects of explanatory variables on the different partners. Here we contrast some of the most interesting empirical hypotheses of previous studies, and which emphasize the role of employees with degrees and PhDs in facilitating cooperative R&D between firms and scientific partners.

The Digital Memory of Catalonia, Consortium of Academic Libraries of Catalonia, contains open-access digitized collections of photographs, drawings, maps, posters, pamphlets, incunabula, ancient Catalan periodicals and many other items with a total of over two million documents related to Catalonia from 18 different institutions (universities, specialized libraries, institutes, archives, etc.).

El GEPA, d’una antiga caserna militar a un equipament bibliotecari per a documents de baix ús

A començaments d’aquest segle xxi entre algunes de les biblioteques universitàries de Catalunya va sorgir una necessitat: la manca d’espai i la reconversió de les biblioteques físiques en el nou panorama educatiu. El Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya (CBUC) va recollir aquesta necessitat i va engegar un projecte amb el mateix esperit cooperatiu de tots els programes i serveis del Consorci. El 2002 es va encarregar un estudi fundacional, el 2003 es va localitzar l’edifici a les antigues casernes militars de Lleida i el 2007 es van iniciar les obres del projecte de rehabilitació. El GEPA (Garantia d’Espai per a la Preservació de l’Accés) és un magatzem cooperatiu per conservar els documents de baix ús, tot garantint-ne la preservació futura i l’accessibilitat immediata quan alguna biblioteca ho necessiti.

Avaluació i impacte de les respostes penals al fenomen de la violència de gènere a Catalunya (2007-2008)

La recerca vol fer una aproximació empírica a les respostes que des del sistema penal a Catalunya s’ofereix al fenomen de la violència de gènere. S’han explorat de forma transversal les diverses fonts estadístiques quantitatives dels diferents serveis, des del Consejo del Poder Judicial, el Departament d’Interior i el Departament de Justícia, fins a l’ Institut Català de les Dones en el període 2007-2008. Tanmateix s’ha elaborat una base de dades jurisprudencial amb totes les sentències dictades per les Audiències Provincials a Catalunya durant aquest període. L’avaluació qualitativa es realitza a partir de l’anàlisi dels programes d’intervenció existents, un focus group amb els operadors jurídics de la xarxa i l’anàlisi i buidat jurisprudencial.

Macroeconomics of extensive margins: a simple model

How do monopolistically competitive industries react to shocks in the context of a New Keynesian macro model? I bridge macroeconomics and trade theory by considering market dynamics. I use an analytically tractable closed-economy model with endogenous entry of firms and show the implications of markets structure for the transmission of real shocks on aggregate variables and welfare. Shock sources become crucial for the results: traditional productivity shocks cause an extensive effect on production; shocks on innovation cause an intensive impact. More patient populations bring the economy to a richer market, although it cushions the extensive effect after an innovation shock.
