ß-catenin is a multifunctional protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and Wnt signal transduction. ß-Catenin signaling has been proposed to act as inducer of cell proliferation in different tumors. However, in some developmental contexts and cell systems ß-catenin also acts as a positive modulator of apoptosis. To get additional insights into the role of ß-Catenin in the regulation of the cell cycle and apoptosis, we have analyzed the levels and subcellular localization of endogenous ß-catenin and its relation with adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) during the cell cycle in S-phase¿synchronized epithelial cells. ß-Catenin levels increase in S phase, reaching maximum accumulation at late G2/M and then abruptly decreasing as the cells enter into a new G1 phase. In parallel, an increased cytoplasmic and nuclear localization of ß-catenin and APC is observed during S and G2 phases. In addition, strong colocalization of APC with centrosomes, but not ß-catenin, is detected in M phase. Interestingly, overexpression of a stable form of ß-catenin, or inhibition of endogenous ß-catenin degradation, in epidermal keratinocyte cells induces a G2 cell cycle arrest and leads to apoptosis. These results support a role for ß-catenin in the control of cell cycle and apoptosis at G2/M in normal and transformed epidermal keratinocytes.

Background Diet plays a role on the development of the immune system, and polyunsaturated fatty acids can modulate the expression of a variety of genes. Human milk contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a fatty acid that seems to contribute to immune development. Indeed, recent studies carried out in our group in suckling animals have shown that the immune function is enhanced after feeding them with an 80:20 isomer mix composed of c9,t11 and t10,c12 CLA. However, little work has been done on the effects of CLA on gene expression, and even less regarding immune system development in early life. Results The expression profile of mesenteric lymph nodes from animals supplemented with CLA during gestation and suckling through dam's milk (Group A) or by oral gavage (Group B), supplemented just during suckling (Group C) and control animals (Group D) was determined with the aid of the specific GeneChip® Rat Genome 230 2.0 (Affymettrix). Bioinformatics analyses were performed using the GeneSpring GX software package v10.0.2 and lead to the identification of 89 genes differentially expressed in all three dietary approaches. Generation of a biological association network evidenced several genes, such as connective tissue growth factor (Ctgf), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (Timp1), galanin (Gal), synaptotagmin 1 (Syt1), growth factor receptor bound protein 2 (Grb2), actin gamma 2 (Actg2) and smooth muscle alpha actin (Acta2), as highly interconnected nodes of the resulting network. Gene underexpression was confirmed by Real-Time RT-PCR. Conclusions Ctgf, Timp1, Gal and Syt1, among others, are genes modulated by CLA supplementation that may have a role on mucosal immune responses in early life.

Recientes investigaciones en el campo de los materiales cerámicos han dado cuenta de la importancia de la metaestabilidad para obtener estructuras con características singulares. Durante la consolidación del material las fases mestaestables se transforman en una estructura donde se produce la inhibición del crecimiento de grano. Este efecto es una consecuencia directa de la inmiscibilidad de dos fases en estado sólido. Los nanocomposites conseguidos, gracias a su pequeño tamaño de grano y a su estructura uniforme, exhiben unas interesantes propiedades como elevada dureza y tenacidad. Estas fases metaestables pueden ser producidas por diversas técnicas entre las que se encuentra la proyección térmica. En concreto en este trabajo se ha empleado la Proyección por plasma (APS). Las fases de partida inmiscibles, son fundidas y homogeneizadas durante su corta estancia en la zona caliente del plasma. Seguidamente, las partículas fundidas y aceleradas por el plasma, se someten a un enfriamiento rápido o temple (quenching) en un medio líquido, como el agua o en un substrato enfriado con nitrógeno líquido, formándose a través de este proceso las fases metaestables. El principal objetivo de este trabajo ha sido la obtención de polvos cerámicos metastables a través de la aplicación de APS y el establecimiento de un proceso de temple conducente a la formación de fases metastables así como la caracterización estructural de éstas. Como última etapa del trabajo se han estudiado los materiales nanoestructurados conseguidos tras realizar tratamientos térmicos.

Background: The NDI, COM and NPQ are evaluation instruments for disability due to NP. There was no Spanish version of NDI or COM for which psychometric characteristics were known. The objectives of this study were to translate and culturally adapt the Spanish version of the Neck Disability Index Questionnaire (NDI), and the Core Outcome Measure (COM), to validate its use in Spanish speaking patients with non-specific neck pain (NP), and to compare their psychometric characteristics with those of the Spanish version of the Northwick Pain Questionnaire (NPQ).Methods: Translation/re-translation of the English versions of the NDI and the COM was done blindly and independently by a multidisciplinary team. The study was done in 9 primary care Centers and 12 specialty services from 9 regions in Spain, with 221 acute, subacute and chronic patients who visited their physician for NP: 54 in the pilot phase and 167 in the validation phase. Neck pain (VAS), referred pain (VAS), disability (NDI, COM and NPQ), catastrophizing (CSQ) and quality of life (SF-12) were measured on their first visit and 14 days later. Patients' self-assessment was used as the external criterion for pain and disability. In the pilot phase, patients' understanding of each item in the NDI and COM was assessed, and on day 1 test-retest reliability was estimated by giving a second NDI and COM in which the name of the questionnaires and the order of the items had been changed.Results: Comprehensibility of NDI and COM were good. Minutes needed to fill out the questionnaires [median, (P25, P75)]: NDI. 4 (2.2, 10.0), COM: 2.1 (1.0, 4.9). Reliability: [ICC, (95%CI)]: NDI: 0.88 (0.80, 0.93). COM: 0.85 (0.75,0.91). Sensitivity to change: Effect size for patients having worsened, not changed and improved between days 1 and 15, according to the external criterion for disability: NDI: -0.24, 0.15, 0.66; NPQ: -0.14, 0.06, 0.67; COM: 0.05, 0.19, 0.92. Validity: Results of NDI, NPQ and COM were consistent with the external criterion for disability, whereas only those from NDI were consistent with the one for pain. Correlations with VAS, CSQ and SF-12 were similar for NDI and NPQ (absolute values between 0.36 and 0.50 on day 1, between 0.38 and 0.70 on day 15), and slightly lower for COM (between 0.36 and 0.48 on day 1, and between 0.33 and 0.61 on day 15). Correlation between NDI and NPQ: r = 0.84 on day 1, r = 0.91 on day 15. Correlation between COM and NPQ: r = 0.63 on day 1, r = 0.71 on day 15.Conclusion: Although most psychometric characteristics of NDI, NPQ and COM are similar, those from the latter one are worse and its use may lead to patients' evolution seeming more positive than it actually is. NDI seems to be the best instrument for measuring NP-related disability, since its results are the most consistent with patient's assessment of their own clinical status and evolution. It takes two more minutes to answer the NDI than to answer the COM, but it can be reliably filled out by the patient without assistance.

A theoretical density-functional study has been carried out to analyze the exchange coupling in the chains of CuGeO3 using discrete models. The results show a good agreement with the experimental exchange coupling constant (J) together with a strong dependence of J with the Cu-O-Cu angle. The calculation of the J values for a distorted model indicates a larger degree of dimerization than those reported previously.

[spa] Este informe presenta parte de los procesos y los resultados del proyecto de I+D+I: Políticas y prácticas en torno a las TIC en la enseñanza obligatoria: Implicaciones para la innovación y la mejora, parcialmente financiado por Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación. SEJ2007-67562. Recoge los cuatro estudios de caso llevados a cabo en dos Institutos de Enseñanza Secundaria Obligatoria y dos centros de educación primaria de Cataluña, que nos han posibilitado elucidar el impacto de las políticas de uso de las TIC y de otras iniciativas políticas para favorecer la innovación y la mejora en cada centro, prestando especial atención a: (a) los temas organizativos relacionados con el tiempo y el espacio; (b) el desarrollo del currículum en el centro (visiones sobre el conocimiento, el aprendizaje, el papel del alumnado y el profesorado, el lugar de las TIC, etc.); (c) las condiciones de trabajo del profesorado (acceso a formación, espacios y prácticas de colaboración; desarrollo profesional); (d) los resultados del aprendizaje (valor intelectual, social y personal de lo aprendido; capacidad de transferencia para seguir aprendiendo

Des del grup d'Educació Infantil ens proposem explorar plegats el contrast entre la perspectiva professionalitzadora i vocacional deis educadors i educadores infantils per respondre a la perspectiva dilematicaque se'ns ha plantejat, peró amb el convenciment apriorístic que les persones que s'ocupen deis nostres infants han de ser professionals de l'ensenyament i alhora han de tenir una certa "vocació". Creiem que no té gaire sentit pensar en el professorat com a persones que es troben predeterminades de manera natural cap a l'ensenyament, en funció d'un conjunt de característiques innates i personals, a partir d'una vocació a tota prova "al servei de la docencia". Peró tampoc no té sentit pensar en els professors com a tecnics, que al marge d'ideologies, creences, problematiques socials i etiques, al marge de les seves própies vivencies i experiencies, són capaços d'aplicar els procediments i metodes "pedagógicament més científics o més eficaços", per ensenyar, en ocasions, alió que uns altres van decidir que havien d'ensenyar, de la manera com uns altres van investigar i van demostrar que s'havia d'ensenyar, tot plegat en profit d'un millor rendiment academic deis seus alumnes.

L'Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior planteja reptes ineludibles que caldrà abordar a mig i llarg termini en tant que impliquen un canvi cultural difícil d'incorporar sobtadament per bona part de la comunitat acadèmica. El debat sobre el tipus de plans d'estudis (el seu contingut i estructura) i sobre les formes organitzatives i de treball que hi haurien de portar aparellades no és un debat sobre el format o l'aparença en què organitzem el treball sinó sobre el propi sentit del treball, de la missió de les institucions universitàries i del nostre rol com a professors i professores.

Un repte fonamental en el procés de construcció de l'Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior es troba en la necessitat de considerar l'estudiantat cada vegada més com l'actor, creador i responsable principal del seu aprenentatge i menys com a contenidor i aplicador d'informació. Això significa, entre altres coses, implicar els estudiants en processos genuins de recerca que els permetin desenvolupar les seves capacitats i competències de cerca, selecció, anàlisi, contrast i interpretació crítica de la informació. Preguntar i investigar per conèixer són els verbs claus per a la indagació. Ser professor o professora a la universitat, des de la perspectiva d'implicar l'estudiantat en experiències d'aprenentatge que afavoreixin la comprensió i la dotació de sentit, comporta un conjunt de plantejaments pedagògics claus, sense el quals difícilment es pot produir la indagació. Crear aquest procés a la universitat requereix dissenys educatius que possibilitin experiències d'aprenentatge genuines, desenvolupar estratègies didàctiques i avaluacions indagadores per tal que els estudiants se sentin part del procés d'ensenyament aprenentatge i trobin espai per desenvolupar la seva autoria i creativitat autoritzant-se i autoritzant els altres a ensenyar i aprendre.

Living with infertility and its emotional impact in couples has been frequently investigated. The objective of the present study was to establish in couples that initiate an IVF treatment:(1) their coping profile, anxiety level (State-anxiety; Trait-anxiety) and depression symptomatology;(2) the explanatory power of coping strategies over anxiety and depression levels, depending on gender. Method: we used a transversal study with 92 couples that begun an IVF treatment in the Assisted Reproduction Unit of the Hospital Clinic. All of them respond to the Spanish adaptation of the CRI-A, the STAI and the BDI-I. Results: the IVF population in comparison to the normal sample use less coping strategies and presents lower levels of anxiety and depression. Women IVF in comparison with man employ further avoidance strategies and present a higher score in depression and state-anxiety. Even when some exceptions exist, anxiety and depression levels are not well explained by coping strategies. Conclusions: It has been shown that the use of coping strategies on the IVF population are lower than in normative sample. Most of the couples present low anxiety (state / trait) and depression levels, and just a low percentage present scores that can require clinical attention.
