Network airlines have been increasingly focusing their operations on hub airports through the exploitation of connecting traffic, allowing them to take advantage of economies of traffic density, which are unequivocal in the airline industry. Less attention has been devoted to airlines' decisions on point-to-point thin routes, which could be served using different aircraft technologies and different business models. This paper examines, both theoretically and empirically, the impact on airlines' networks of the two major innovations in the airline industry in the last two decades: the regional jet technology and the low-cost business model. We show that, under certain circumstances, direct services on point-to-point thin routes can be viable and thus airlines may be interested in deviating passengers out of the hub. This paper contrasts the incentives for cronyism in business, the public sector and politics within an agency problem model with moral hazard. The analysis is focused on the institutional differences between private, public and political organizations. In business, when facing a residual claimant contract, a chief manager ends up with a relatively moderate rst-best level of cronyism within a firm. The institutional framework of the public sector does not allow explicit contracting, which leads to a more severe cronyism problem within public organizations. Finally, it is shown that the nature of political appointments (such that the subordinate's reappointment is conditioned on the chief's re-election) together with implicit contracting makes political cronyism the most extreme case. We use a dynamic factor model to provide a semi-structural representation for 101 quarterly US macroeconomic series. We find that (i) the US economy is well described by a number of structural shocks between two and six. Focusing on the four-shock specification, we identify, using sign restrictions, two non-policy shocks, demand and supply, and two policy shocks, monetary and fiscal. We obtain the following results. (ii) Both supply and demand shocks are important sources of fluctuations; supply prevails for GDP, while demand prevails for employment and inflation. (ii) Policy matters, Both monetary and fiscal policy shocks have sizeable effects on output and prices, with little evidence of crowding out; both monetary and fiscal authorities implement important systematic countercyclical policies reacting to demand shocks. (iii) Negative demand shocks have a large long-run positive effect on productivity, consistently with the Schumpeterian "cleansing" view of recessions.

This paper uses a structural, large dimensional factor model to evaluate the role of 'news' shocks (shocks with a delayed effect on productivity) in generating the business cycle. We find that (i) existing small-scale VECM models are affected by 'non-fundamentalness' and therefore fail to recover the correct shock and impulse response functions; (ii) news shocks have a limited role in explaining the business cycle; (iii) their effects are in line with what predicted by standard neoclassical theory; (iv) the bulk of business cycle fluctuations are explained by shocks unrelated to technology.

This paper aims to analyse the impact of human capital on business productivity, focusing the analysis on the possible effect of the complementarity that exists between human capital and new production technologies, particularly advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) for the specific case of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Catalonia. Additionally, following the theory of skill-biased technological change, the paper analyses whether technological change produces bias exclusively in the skills required for managers, or whether the bias extends to the skills required of production staff. With this objective, we have compared the possible existence of complementarity between AMTs and the level of human capital for different occupational groups. The results confirm the complementary relationship between human capital and new production technologies. The results by occupational group confirm that to maximise the productivity of new technologies, skilled staff are needed both in management and production, with managers and professionals as well as skilled operatives playing a vital role. This project deals with the generation of profitability and the distribution of its benefits. Inspired by Davis (1947, 1955), we define profitability as the ratio of revenue to cost. Profitability is not as popular a measure of business financial performance as profit, the difference between revenue and cost. Regardless of its popularity, however, profitability is surely a useful financial performance measure. Our primary objective in this project is to identify the factors that generate change in profitability. One set of factors, which we refer to as sources, consists of changes in quantities and prices of outputs and inputs. Individual quantity changes aggregate to the overall impact of quantity change on profitability change, which we call productivity change. Individual price changes aggregate to the overall impact of price change on profitability change, which we call price recovery change. In this framework profitability change consists exclusively of productivity change and price recovery change. A second set of factors, which we refer to as drivers, consists of phenomena such as technical change, change in the efficiency of resource allocation, and the impact of economies of scale. The ability of management to harness these factors drives productivity change, which is one component of profitability change. Thus the term sources refers to quantities and prices of individual outputs and inputs, whose changes influence productivity change or price recovery change, either of which influences profitability change. The term drivers refers to phenomena related to technology and management that influence productivity change (but not price recovery change), and hence profitability change.

Aquest projecte mostra la importància que pot tenir un sistema basat en Business Intelligence, dins d’una empresa o organització, donant una eina per augmentar la competitivitat, treballant les dades que s’obtenen dels diferents sistemes de gestió que hi ha dins l’empresa. Aquest gran nombre de dades històriques les transformarem per formar una base de dades de qualitat, i les explorarem per tal d’extreure’n informació útil en format gràfic, per ajudar a la pressa de decisions per part dels directius.

We will present an analysis of data from a literature review and semi-structured interviews with experts on OER, to identify different aspects of OER business models and to establish how the success of the OER initiatives is measured. The results collected thus far show that two different business models for OER initiatives exist, but no data on their success or failure is published. We propose a framework for measuring success of OER initiatives.

Este estudio abarca el diseño, desarrollo tecnológico y fabricación, mediante la utilización de tecnologías de Micro y Nanosistemas, de herramientas en el orden de las micras y los nanómetros. Estos dispositivos serán utilizados en el estudio, identificación e interactuación con células vivas, ya que sus pequeñas dimensiones los hacen idóneos para su aplicación en el campo de la Biología Celular. Estas micro y nanoherramientas pueden usarse para el estudio, identificación o actuación de células vivas desde el exterior. Pero también pueden ser microinyectadas, lipofectadas o fagocitadas por parte de la misma célula, y de esta manera hacer estudios o actuar de forma intracelular.

En el present treball de recerca s’ha portat a terme la síntesi i caracterització de fibres a escala micro- i nanomètrica mitjançant l’auto-assemblatge dels compostos 1 i 2. Aquests compostos estan formats per una unitat de perilendiimida (PI) i una unitat d’estilbè i, en base a estudis previs desenvolupats al nostre grup de recerca, haurien de comportar-se com a sistemes acceptor-donador d’electrons fotoinduïts. Per tant, les corresponents estructures obtingudes podrien presentar activitat fotovoltaica. En primer lloc, s’ha abordat la síntesi dels compostos 1 i 2, seguint la metodologia posada a punt prèviament al nostre grup de recerca. A continuació, s’han estudiat les propietats òptiques de 1 i 2 en dissolució, la qual cosa ha permès establir que: (a) tal i com es pretenia, tots dos compostos presenten transferència electrònica fotoinduïda entre la unitat electró-acceptora de PI i la unitat electró-donadora de trans-estilbè; (b) la diferent morfologia de la cadena alquílica lateral del grup de PI a 1 i 2 afecta la seva capacitat d’auto-assemblatge mitjançant interaccions intermoleculars de tipus π-π. A continuació, s’han assajat diferents metodologies per a la fabricació de micro- i nanoestructures auto-assemblades de 1 i 2. Els millors resultats s’han obtingut mitjançant l’ús de motlles d’òxid d’alúmina i per al compost 2 degut al menor impediment estèric de la seva cadena alquílica lateral. La caracterització de les estructures resultants en aquest cas mitjançant tècniques microscòpiques i espectroscòpiques han permès demostrar la formació de nanotubs de 200 nm de diàmetre, d’uns 15 μm de longitud i en què les unitats de PI s’ordenen amb els seus sistemes aromàtics de forma co-facial o gairebé co-facial. La possible activitat fotovoltaica d’aquestes estructures s’estudiarà posteriorment.

Este trabajo presenta un análisis del efecto positivo que puede tener el microvoluntariado (crowdsourcing) en las variables psicológicas entre trabajadores de una gran empresa, así como la viabilidad de crear una comunidad práctica para abordar un problema de salud específico. Para el desarrollo de este documento hemos recogido y analizado diferentes tipos de bibliografía, científica y no científica, con el fin de dar una explicación más global de lo que es el crowdsourcing y contextualizar este tipo de voluntariado para lograr una mayor comprensión de esta práctica.

We study consumption heterogeneity over the business cycle. Using household panel data from 1984 to 2010 in the US we find that the welfare cost of the business cycle is non-negligible, once agents heterogeneity is taken into account, and sums to about 1% of yearly consumption. This is due to the structure of comovements between the different parts of the consumption distribution, in particular the tails are highly volatile and negatively related to each other. We also find that business cycle fluctuations originating from exogenous financial shocks only hit the top end of the consumption distribution and therefore reduce consumption inequality.

Engineering of negotiation model allows to develop effective heuristic for business intelligence. Digital ecosystems demand open negotiation models. To define in advance effective heuristics is not compliant with the requirement of openness. The new challenge is to develop business intelligence in advance exploiting an adaptive approach. The idea is to learn business strategy once new negotiation model rise in the e-market arena. In this paper we present how recommendation technology may be deployed in an open negotiation environment where the interaction protocol models are not known in advance. The solution we propose is delivered as part of the ONE Platform, open source software that implements a fully distributed open environment for business negotiation
