This paper presents a theoretical and empirical analysis of the relationship be- tween frequency of scheduled transportation services and their substitutability with personal transportation (using distance as a proxy). We study the interaction between a monopoly firm providing a high-speed scheduled service and private transportation (i.e., car). Interestingly, the carrier chooses to increase the frequency of service on longer routes when competing with personal transportation because by providing higher frequency (at extra cost) it can also charge higher fares which can boost its profits. However, in line with the results of earlier studies, frequency decreases for longer flights when driving is not a viable option. An empirical application of our analysis to the European airline industry confirms the predictions of our theoretical model. Fixed delays in neuronal interactions arise through synaptic and dendritic processing. Previous work has shown that such delays, which play an important role in shaping the dynamics of networks of large numbers of spiking neurons with continuous synaptic kinetics, can be taken into account with a rate model through the addition of an explicit, fixed delay. Here we extend this work to account for arbitrary symmetric patterns of synaptic connectivity and generic nonlinear transfer functions. Specifically, we conduct a weakly nonlinear analysis of the dynamical states arising via primary instabilities of the stationary uniform state. In this way we determine analytically how the nature and stability of these states depend on the choice of transfer function and connectivity. While this dependence is, in general, nontrivial, we make use of the smallness of the ratio in the delay in neuronal interactions to the effective time constant of integration to arrive at two general observations of physiological relevance. These are: 1 - fast oscillations are always supercritical for realistic transfer functions. 2 - Traveling waves are preferred over standing waves given plausible patterns of local connectivity.

Multiplier analysis based upon the information contained in Leontief's inverse is undoubtedly part of the core of the input-output methodology and numerous applications an extensions have been developed that exploit its informational content. Nonetheless there are some implicit theoretical assumptions whose implications have perhaps not been fully assessed. This is the case of the 'excess capacity' assumption. Because of this assumption resources are available as needed to adjust production to new equilibrium states. In real world applications, however, new resources are scarce and costly. Supply constraints kick in and hence resource allocation needs to take them into account to really assess the effect of government policies. Using a closed general equilibrium model that incorporates supply constraints, we perform some simple numerical exercises and proceed to derive a 'constrained' multiplier matrix that can be compared with the standard 'unrestricted' multiplier matrix. Results show that the effectiveness of expenditure policies hinges critically on whether or not supply constraints are considered.

The paper investigates the role of mothers in affecting childrens' performance at school. It develops a theoretical model in which household is treated as an individual, whose utility depends on the performance at school of the student and on consumption. The model focuses on the possibilities through which mother’s help may affect pupil's performance in terms of time devoted to supervision and spillover effects. Empirical evidence, using Italian PISA 2006, shows that highly educated mothers have a positive impact on students' score only when they are highly qualified in the job market.

We develop a mediation model in which firm size is proposed to affect the scale and quality of innovative output through the adoption of different decision styles during the R&D process. The aim of this study is to understand how the internal changes that firms undergo as they evolve from small to larger organizations affect R&D productivity. In so doing, we illuminate the underlying theoretical mechanism affecting two different dimensions of R&D productivity, namely the scale and quality of innovative output which have not received much attention in previous literature. Using longitudinal data of Spanish manufacturing firms we explore the validity of this mediation model. Our results show that as firms evolve in size, they increasingly emphasize analytical decision making, and consequently, large-sized firms aim for higher-quality innovations while small firms aim for a larger scale of innovative output.

This article analyzes the different perceptions of both male and female potential entrepreneurs from three European regions differing in their respective level of economic development and entrepreneurial culture. We use an extended cognitive model of entrepreneurial intentions based on the theory of planned behaviour, the theory of normative social behaviour and social capital literature. Results show females have lower self-efficacy and entrepreneurial attraction than males, thus leading to lower entrepreneurial intention. Differences between the three subsamples are small when males are studied. However, female entrepreneurial intentions and perceptions are more affected by the cultural context.

L'adaptació dels estudis a l'Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior (EEES) comporta l'establiment d'un nou paradigma docent centrat en l'estudiant, l'ús d'una nova unitat de valoració de l'activitat acadèmica, el crèdit europeu, i enfortir i repensar l'avaluació de l'aprenentatge. Aquesta adaptació representa una transformació profunda en el paper que juga tant el professor com l'alumne. En aquest context, es fa molt necessari adaptar les metodologies docents, els continguts i les eines d'interacció amb els alumnes. La finalitat d'aquest projecte consisteix en adaptar les assignatures troncals d'Organització i Mètodes de Treball de la Diplomatura de Relacions Laborals a aquest nou entorn. Per a tal fi, a part d'elaborar un pla docent consistent al EEES, també s'han de desenvolupar continguts, eines d'interacció i metodologies d'avaluació que permetin millorar el nivell de formació i el rendiment acadèmic de l'estudiant. Aquest projecte comprèn sis accions específiques per aconseguir-ho: 1) L'elaboració de la guia docent (objectius, capacitats a treballar, continguts, metodologia, avaluació, etc.); 2) L'elaboració del programa d'activitats (on es concreten les activitats d'aprenentatge que l'estudiant ha de dur a terme per assolir els objectius formatius: projectes tutoritzats, estudis de casos , lectures orientades, etc.) 3) Elaboració del material teòric. Aquesta acció té com a objectiu realitzar un llibre bàsic que comprengui la totalitat de la matèria relacionada amb OMT. 4) Elaboració del material pràctic. 5) Creació d'una pàgina web per aquest material. Aquesta web pretén ser un espai de treball comú pels estudiants de Relacions Laborals que cursin assignatures d'OMT a la UAB i la UPF. 6) Realitzar un projecte pilot tutoritzat. Aquesta prova pilot sorgeix arran de converses informals mantingudes amb alumnes de la diplomatura i la coordinadora d'estudis.

This paper explores the factors that determine firm’s R&D cooperation with different partners, paying special attention on the role of tertiary education (degree and PhDs level) in facilitating the connection between the firms and the to scientific bodies (technology centres, public research centres and universities). Here, we attempt to answer two questions. First, are innovative firms that carry out internal and external R&D activities more likely to cooperate on R&D projects with other partners? Second, do Spanish innovative firms with a high participation of researchers with degrees or PhDs tend to cooperate more with scientific partners? To answer both questions we apply a three-dimensional approach on a firm level Panel Data with a sample of 4.998 manufacturing and services Spanish firms. First, we run a complementary test between external R&D acquisition and skilled research workers and find that firms which carry out external R&D activities obtain a greater return on R&D cooperation when they have skilled workers in R&D, especially in high-tech manufactures and KIS services. Second, we carry out a 2-step tobit model to estimate, in the first stage, the determinants that explain whether Spanish innovative firms cooperate or not; and in the second stage the factors that affect the choice of partners. And third, we apply an ordered probit model to test the marginal effects of explanatory variables on the different partners. Here we contrast some of the most interesting empirical hypotheses of previous studies, and which emphasize the role of employees with degrees and PhDs in facilitating cooperative R&D between firms and scientific partners.

This paper explores how absorptive capacity affects the innovative performance and productivity dynamics of Spanish firms. A firm’s efficiency levels are measured using two variables: the labour productivity and the Total Factor Productivity (TFP). The theoretical framework is based on the seminal contributions of Cohen and Levinthal (1989, 1990) regarding absorptive capacity; and the applied framework is based on the four-stage structural model proposed by Crépon, Duguet and Mairesse (1998) for setting the determinants of R&D, the effects of R&D activities on innovation outputs, and the impacts of innovation on firm productivity. The present study uses a twostage structural model. In the first stage, a probit estimation is used to investigate how the sources of R&D, the absorptive capacity and a vector of the firm’s individual features influence the firm’s likelihood of developing innovations in products or processes. In the second phase, a quantile regression is used to analyze the effect of R&D sources, absorptive capacity and firm characteristics on productivity. This method shows the elasticity of each exogenous variable on productivity according to the firms’ levels of efficiency, and thus allows us to distinguish between firms that are close to the technological frontier and those that are further away from it. We used extensive firm-level panel data from 5,575 firms for the 2004-2009 period. The results show that the internal absorptive capacity has a strong impact on the productivity of firms, whereas the role of external absorptive capacity differs according to nature of the each industry and according the distance of firms from the technological frontier. Alteracions durant el desenvolupament cerebral produirien canvis en la connectivitat neuronal i la bioquímica cel•lular que podrien resultar en una disfunció cognitiva i/o emocional, desembocant a trastorns psiquiàtrics. Les neurotrofines intervenen en els processos del neurodesenvolupament i en la funcionalitat del cervell adult i, conseqüentment, serien bons candidats com a factors de predisposició en diverses malalties mentals. S’ha suggerit la implicació del receptor de la neurotrofina 3, TrkC, en el trastorn de pànic. Nosaltres proposem que la sobreexpressió del gen NTRK3 (TrkC) és un mediador comú dels desencadenants genètics i ambientals d’aquest trastorn. Concretament, la seva desregulació podria produir canvis estructurals i funcionals a l’escorça cerebral dels pacients pel seu paper durant l’establiment dels circuïts corticals i la neuroplasticitat a l’adult, probablement esdevenint elements de predisposició a patir atacs de pànic. Els objectius principals d’aquest treball han estat: 1/determinar la contribució específica del gen NTRK3 a les alteracions de l’escorça cerebral observades en pacients, utilitzant un model murí modificat genèticament (TgNTRK3), i 2/analitzar l’impacte específic de la sobreexpressió de NTRK3 sobre la corticogènesi durant estadis embrionaris o postnatals estudiant la neurogènesi i la neuritogènesi. Els resultats indiquen que la sobreexpressió de NTRK3 als ratolins produeix una reducció del gruix de l’escorça frontal, recapitulant la hipofrontalitat dels pacients, que comportaria una menor inhibició dels nuclis subcorticals del sistema límbic com l’amígdala, i alteracions citoarquitectòniques a l’escorça prefrontal medial que recolzen la hipòtesi del seu mal funcionament. Tanmateix, els ratolins TgNTRK3 presenten canvis estructurals a l’escorça somatosensorial, suggerint que el processament de la informació sensorial podria estar alterat, el que encara no s’ha explorat en pacients. La sobreexpressió de NTRK3 també afecta la neuritogènesi en cultius primaris corticals i modifica la resposta de les neurones a l’estimulació amb neurotrofines. Per tant, el fenotip cortical adult dels TgNTRK3 podria dependre d’alteracions durant la corticogènesi.

This article presents preliminary findings from a research study conducted by the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education on the role of open educational resources (OER) in transforming pedagogy. Based on a study of art and humanities teachers participating in an OER training network, the study reveals how exposure to OER resources and tools support collaboration among teachers, as well as new conversations about teaching practices. These findings have implications for engaging teachers in adopting new OER use practices, and for how OER can be integrated as a model for innovation in teaching and in resource development.

Initiatives to stimulate the development and propagation of open educational resources (OER) need a sufficiently large community that can be mobilized to participate in this endeavour. Failure to achieve this could lead to underuse of OER. In the context of the Wikiwijs initiative a large scale survey was undertaken amongst primary and secondary school teachers to explore possible determinants of the educational use of digital learning materials (DLMs). Basing on the Integrative Model of Behaviour Prediction it was conjectured that self-efficacy, attitude and perceived norm would take a central role in explaining the intention to use DLMs. Several other predictors were added to the model as well whose effects were hypothesized to be mediated by the three central variables.All conjectured relationships were found using path analysis on survey data from 1484 teachers. Intention to DLMs was most strongly determined by self-efficacy, followed by attitude. ICT proficiency was in its turn the strongest predictor of self-efficacy. Perceived norm played only a limited role in the intention to use DLMs. Concluding, it seems paramount for the success of projects such as Wikiwijs to train teachers in the use of digital learning materials and ICT (e.g. the digital blackboard) and to impact on their attitude.

Sediment composition is mainly controlled by the nature of the source rock(s), and chemical (weathering) and physical processes (mechanical crushing, abrasion, hydrodynamic sorting) during alteration and transport. Although the factors controlling these processes are conceptually well understood, detailed quantification of compositional changes induced by a single process are rare, as are examples where the effects of several processes can be distinguished. The present study was designed to characterize the role of mechanical crushing and sorting in the absence of chemical weathering. Twenty sediment samples were taken from Alpine glaciers that erode almost pure granitoid lithologies. For each sample, 11 grain-size fractions from granules to clay (ø grades &-1 to &9) were separated, and each fraction was analysed for its chemical composition.The presence of clear steps in the box-plots of all parts (in adequate ilr and clr scales) against ø is assumed to be explained by typical crystal size ranges for the relevant mineral phases. These scatter plots and the biplot suggest a splitting of the full grain size range into three groups: coarser than ø=4 (comparatively rich in SiO2, Na2O, K2O, Al2O3, and dominated by “felsic” minerals like quartz and feldspar), finer than ø=8 (comparatively rich in TiO2, MnO, MgO, Fe2O3, mostly related to “mafic” sheet silicates like biotite and chlorite), and intermediate grains sizes (4≤ø &8; comparatively rich in P2O5 and CaO, related to apatite, some feldspar).To further test the absence of chemical weathering, the observed compositions were regressed against three explanatory variables: a trend on grain size in ø scale, a step function for ø≥4, and another for ø≥8. The original hypothesis was that the trend could be identified with weathering effects, whereas each step function would highlight those minerals with biggest characteristic size at its lower end. Results suggest that this assumption is reasonable for the step function, but that besides weathering some other factors (different mechanical behavior of minerals) have also an important contribution to the trend.Key words: sediment, geochemistry, grain size, regression, step function
