Las complejas relaciones entre política y deporte y, más concretamente aún, entre deporte y pulsión nacionalista, son exploradas por el autor a la luz de la Olimpíada Popular de 1936, organizada –y finalmente no celebrada– en la Barcelona inmediatamente anterior al golpe de Estado del 18 de julio como réplica y alternativa a los Juegos Olímpicos que aquel verano se celebraron en Berlín, entonces capital del incipiente Tercer Reich.

Foundations for contest success functions

In the literature the outcome of contests is either interpreted as win probabilities or as shares of the prize. With this in mind, we examine two approaches to contest success functions. In the first we analyze the implications of contestants' incomplete information concerning the "type" of the contest administrator. While in the case of two contestants this approach can rationalize prominent contest success functions, we show that it runs into difficulties when there are more agents. Our second approach interprets contest success functions as sharing rules and establishes a connection to bargaining and claims problems which is independent of the number of contestants. Both approaches provide foundations for popular contest success functions and guidelines for the definition of new ones. Keywords: Endogenous Contests, Contest Success Function. Remeis casolans per a bèsties i humans: medicina i veterinària popular a la catalunya central

Treball de recerca realitzat per un alumne d’ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit científic del Jovent l’any 2008. Consisteix en un diccionari informàtic que recull plantes i productes, cadascun amb les seves propietats medicinals i altres usos que se’ls atribueixen popularment i la forma de preparar remeis i aplicar-los per a cada malaltia o afecció. La informació s’ha extret de les entrevistes fetes a informants d’entre 60 i 90 anys del Bages, Berguedà i Solsonès, i es complementa amb un herbari i una mostra de preparacions dels remeis.

Que bèstia!: anàlisi del bestiari popular català

Treball de recerca realitzat per una alumna d’ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit científic del Jovent l’any 2008. Els objectius d’aquest treball són d’una banda determinar i analitzar les característiques generals de l’actual bestiari festiu popular de Catalunya, diagnosi global mai realitzada fins ara. De l’altra s’ha intentat establir una relació entre el bestiari popular català actual i els seus orígens més remots, prenent l’exemple d’una de les bèsties més curioses del nostre bestiari: la víbria.

Cada cop més, els editors d'avui dia actuen a nivell global per proveïr informació electrònica, i és responsabilitat de les biblioteques actuar a nivell global per expressar les seves posicions al mercat pel que fa a les polítiques de preus i altres requisits i condicions relatius a l'adquisició d'informació publicada. Aquest document actualitza les declaracions anteriors de l'ICOLC sobre el context actual de la informació electrònica, el context que desitjem per al futur, i els usos preferits per tal que els consorcis de biblioteques i les seves biblioteques membre puguin assolir els resultats desitjats. En aquesta actualització general, emfatitzem els aspectes referents a l'economia i les polítiques de preus, que han estat una preocupació destacada des de les primeres trobades de l'ICOLC el 1996 i al llarg de les Declaracions que hem fet fins ara.

La literatura popular del nord del Marroc

Treball de recerca realitzat per una alumna d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit cientí¬fic del Jovent l'any 2009. L’objectiu d’aquest treball és fer un recull de literatura de transmissió oral i reunir d’aquesta manera les històries, els contes, les llegendes. etc. que els avis de l’autora li contaven. Un dels objectius era que servís alhora de mitjà de coneixement per a tots els nens i nenes que, tenint un origen marroquí o berber, han nascut a Catalunya, per la qual cosa no han tingut accés a aquest tipus de literatura. Ja que, per una banda han estat sempre escolaritzats en català, i per l altra la font de coneixement que suposen els avis s ha quedat al Marroc. Aquests nens tenen poc coneixement sobre la seva cultura d’origen i més si aquesta gaudeix de poc valor.

Del teatre líric a la cançó popular : construcció social a partir de la música en València (1900-1959)

El text que es mostra a continuació resumeix el treball realitzat en la primera fase de recerca del projecte titulat provisionalment "Del teatre líric a la cançó popular: construcció social a partir de la música en València (1900-1959)". Aquest treball ha tingut una durada de set mesos entre febrer i agost de 2009. El projecte pretén dibuixar les línies que uneixen teatre líric i cançó popular fent especial èmfasi en els mecanismes de creació d'identitat de gènere, que va envoltar tot aquest procés. Per aquests motius, la recerca está construïda sobre dos eixos: entrevistes amb les fonts orals i buidatge dels principals fons bibliogrífics per a l'estudi de les fonts primàries i secundàries del primer període analitzat (1931-1959), focalitzat en els pobles que envolten la ciutat de València. Les conclusions apunten cap a una clara vinculació entre teatre líric i cançó popular, així com la utilització dels esdeveniments musicals amb finalitats conformadores de rols socials per part de les institucions sociopolítiques. Les diferències entre fonts primàries i fonts orals assenyalen una naturalització de la desigualtat de gènere a través de la música que han arribat fins als nostres dies, per la qual cosa és necessari l'estudi i anàlisi de la memòria musical.

A Political Agency Model of Coattail Voting

In this paper, I provide a formal justi…cation for a well-established coattail effect, when a popular candidate at one branch of government attracts votes to candidates from the same political party for other branches of government. A political agency frame- work with moral hazard is applied to analyze coattails in simultaneous presidential and congressional elections. I show that coattail voting is a natural outcome of the optimal reelection scheme adopted by a representative voter to motivate politicians' efforts in a retrospective voting environment. I assume that an office-motivated politician (executive or congressman) prefers her counterpart to be affiliated with the same political party. This correlation of incentives leads the voter to adopt a joint performance evaluation rule, which is conditioned on the politicians belonging to the same party or different parties. The two-sided coattail effects then arise. On the one hand, the executive's suc- cess/failure props up/drags down her partisan ally in congressional election, which implies presidential coattails. On the other hand, the executive's reelection itself is affected by the congressman's performance, which results in reverse coattails. JEL classi…fication: D72, D86. Aquest treball analitza el creixement econòmic de la República Popular de la Xina entre 1978 i 2008, a manera d'esbrinar els fenòmens econòmics que li han permès a l'economia xinesa el creixement via exportacions. Una vegada descobert les variables independents amb significació que han influït altament en el ràpid creixement viscut pel país en aquest període, aquest treball tracta d'analitzar les causes d'aquesta variable. Un cop realitzat aquesta panoràmica econòmica, aquest treball exposa diferents visions sobre les transformacions necessàries en el país per un creixement sostenible.

Credit risk contributions under the Vasicek one-factor model: a fast wavelet expansion approximation

To measure the contribution of individual transactions inside the total risk of a credit portfolio is a major issue in financial institutions. VaR Contributions (VaRC) and Expected Shortfall Contributions (ESC) have become two popular ways of quantifying the risks. However, the usual Monte Carlo (MC) approach is known to be a very time consuming method for computing these risk contributions. In this paper we consider the Wavelet Approximation (WA) method for Value at Risk (VaR) computation presented in [Mas10] in order to calculate the Expected Shortfall (ES) and the risk contributions under the Vasicek one-factor model framework. We decompose the VaR and the ES as a sum of sensitivities representing the marginal impact on the total portfolio risk. Moreover, we present technical improvements in the Wavelet Approximation (WA) that considerably reduce the computational effort in the approximation while, at the same time, the accuracy increases.

Organizational form and business performance

This project deals with the generation of profitability and the distribution of its benefits. Inspired by Davis (1947, 1955), we define profitability as the ratio of revenue to cost. Profitability is not as popular a measure of business financial performance as profit, the difference between revenue and cost. Regardless of its popularity, however, profitability is surely a useful financial performance measure. Our primary objective in this project is to identify the factors that generate change in profitability. One set of factors, which we refer to as sources, consists of changes in quantities and prices of outputs and inputs. Individual quantity changes aggregate to the overall impact of quantity change on profitability change, which we call productivity change. Individual price changes aggregate to the overall impact of price change on profitability change, which we call price recovery change. In this framework profitability change consists exclusively of productivity change and price recovery change. A second set of factors, which we refer to as drivers, consists of phenomena such as technical change, change in the efficiency of resource allocation, and the impact of economies of scale. The ability of management to harness these factors drives productivity change, which is one component of profitability change. Thus the term sources refers to quantities and prices of individual outputs and inputs, whose changes influence productivity change or price recovery change, either of which influences profitability change. The term drivers refers to phenomena related to technology and management that influence productivity change (but not price recovery change), and hence profitability change.

Los determinantes de la demanda turística y sus implicaciones en términos de estacionalidad

El análisis de los determinantes de la demanda de turística es un tema muy popular en la literatura turística y, de acuerdo con Zimmerman (1982), ha sido objeto de análisis egún diferentes dimensiones temporales (el periodo particular, a lo largo del ciclo de vda, según la generación). Este trabajo se propone analizar el tema en una perspectiva aún diferente, estudiando como varia el impacto de las restricciones económicas y familiares a lo largo de un año tomado como referencia, y por ende, de interpretar sus consecuencias en término de estacionalidad (aspecto que a pesar de la relevancia que tiene, ha recibido muy poco interés por la literatura académica).

A Proportional Approach to Bankruptcy Problems with a guaranteed minimum

In a distribution problem, and specfii cally in bankruptcy issues, the Proportional (P) and the Egalitarian (EA) divisions are two of the most popular ways to resolve the conflict. The Constrained Equal Awards rule (CEA) is introduced in bankruptcy literature to ensure that no agent receives more than her claim, a problem that can arise when using the egalitarian division. We propose an alternative modi cation, by using a convex combination of P and EA. The recursive application of this new rule finishes at the CEA rule. Our solution concept ensures a minimum amount to each agent, and distributes the remaining estate in a proportional way.
