Inflammation is involved in cardiovascular diseases. Some studies have found that the Mediterranean diet (MD) can reduce serum concentrations of inflammation markers. However, none of these studies have analyzed the influence of genetic variability in such a response. Our objective was to study the effect of the -765G.C polymorphism in the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene and the -174G.C polymorphism in the interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene on serum concentrations of IL-6, C-reactive protein, intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 as well as their influence on the response toa nutritional interventionwithMD.An intervention study ina high cardiovascular riskMediterranean population (314 men and 407 women) was undertaken. Participants were randomly assigned to consume a low-fat control diet or a MD supplementedwith virgin olive oil ornuts.Measureswereobtained at baseline and after a 3-mointervention period.At baseline, the COX-2 -765G.C polymorphismwas associated with lower serum IL-6 (5.85 6 4.82 in GG vs. 4.74 6 4.14 ng/L in C-allele carriers; P ¼ 0.002) and ICAM-1 (265.8 6 114.8 in GG vs. 243.0 6 107.1 mg/L in C-carriers; P ¼ 0.018) concentrations. These differences remained significant aftermultivariate adjustment. The IL-6 -174G.C polymorphism was associatedwith higher (CC vs. G-carriers) serumICAM-1concentrations in bothmenandwomenandwithhigherserumIL-6 concentrations inmen.Following the dietary intervention, no significant gene x diet interactions were found. In conclusion, although COX-2 -765G.C and IL-6 -174G.C polymorphismswere associatedwith inflammation, consuming aMD(either supplemented with virgin olive oil or nuts) reduced the concentration of inflammation markers regardless of these polymorphisms.

Ensuring the accuracy of dietary assessment instruments is paramount for interpreting diet-disease relationships. The present study assessed the relative and construct validity of the 14-point Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) used in the Prevencio´n con Dieta Mediterra´nea (PREDIMED) study, a primary prevention nutrition-intervention trial. A validated FFQ and the MEDAS were administered to 7146 participants of the PREDIMED study. The MEDASderived PREDIMED score correlated significantly with the corresponding FFQ PREDIMED score (r = 0.52; intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.51) and in the anticipated directions with the dietary intakes reported on the FFQ. Using Bland Altman"s analysis, the average MEDAS Mediterranean diet score estimate was 105% of the FFQ PREDIMED score estimate. Limits of agreement ranged between 57 and 153%. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that a higher PREDIMED score related directly (P , 0.001) to HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and inversely (P , 0.038) to BMI, waist circumference, TG, the TG:HDL-C ratio, fasting glucose, and the cholesterol:HDL-C ratio. The 10-y estimated coronary artery disease risk decreased as the PREDIMED score increased (P , 0.001). The MEDAS is a valid instrument for rapid estimation of adherence to the Mediterranean diet and may be useful in clinical practice.

Trying to define the precise role played by insulin regulating the survival of brown adipocytes, we have used rat fetal brown adipocytes maintained in primary culture. The effect of insulin on apoptosis and the mechanisms involved were assessed. Different from the known effects of insulin as a survival factor, we have found that long-term treatment (72 h) with insulin induces apoptosis in rat fetal brown adipocytes. This process is dependent on the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/mammalian target of rapamycin/p70 S6 kinase pathway. Short-term treatment with the conditioned medium from brown adipocytes treated with insulin for 72 h mimicked the apoptotic effect of insulin. During the process, caspase 8 activation, Bid cleavage, cytochrome c release, and activation of caspases 9 and 3 are sequentially produced. Treatment with the caspase inhibitor, benzyloxycarbonyl-Val-Ala-Asp (Z-VAD), prevents activation of this apoptotic cascade. The antioxidants, ascorbic acid and superoxide dismutase, also impair this process of apoptosis. Moreover, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), probably through reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidases, and a late decrease in reduced glutathione content are produced. According to this, antioxidants prevent caspase 8 activation and Bid cleavage, suggesting that ROS production is an important event mediating this process of apoptosis. However, the participation of uncoupling protein-1, -2, and -3 regulating ROS is unclear because their levels remain unchanged upon insulin treatment for 72 h. Our data suggest that the prolonged hyperinsulinemia might cause insulin resistance through the loss of brown adipose tissue.

Describimos el patrón espacial de un ecotono bosque subalpino-pastos alpinos, que incluye los límites altitudinales del bosque y del árbol, dominado por Pinus uncinata Ram. y localizado en los Pirineos Centrales. Situamos una parcela rectangular (30 x 140 m) cruzando el ecotono con su lado mayor paralelo a la pendiente. Para cada individuo de R uncinata dentro de la parcela medimos: su localización (coordenadas x, y), y variables estructurales (p. ej. altura) y de forma de crecimiento (número y tipo -vivo o muerto, vertical o arbustivo- de pies por individuo). Los individuos vivos de P. uncinata se clasificaron según su tamaño (adultos, jóvenes, vástagos y plántulas) y forma de crecimiento (krurmnhoIz -individuos arbustivos policórmicos-, krummholz con pies verticales). Describimos cuantitativamente el tipo de sustrato (suelo, materia orgánica, grava, roca) y la cobertura de herbáceas, arbustos y P. uncinata usando transectos paralelos a la pendiente. La estructura del ecotono se describió mediante: (a) los análisis del patrón de puntos (K de Ripley) y (b) del patrón de superficies (correlogramas espaciales de la altura); (c) la detección y descripción de fronteras usando la densidad o variables de tamaño y forma de crecimiento de los indidividos ; (d) la síntesis de las variaciones en la presencia y diversidad de sustratos y de herbáceas y arbustos-, y (e) la ordenación de los cuadrados en que subdividimos la parcela (115 cuadrados de 6 x 6 m), de acuerdo a su posición espacial en el ecotono, al tipo de sustrato, a la cobertura de herbáceas y arbustos y al número, tamaño y forma de crecimiento de los individuos de P. uncinata. La mayoría de los individuos vivos de P. uncinata eran krummhoIz, situándose por encima del límite del bosque. Los individuos krummholz mostraron interacción espacial positiva con las plántulas. En el área inferior del ecotono, los individuos grandes, verticales y unicórmicos...

Objetivo general: Analizar la formación de las enfermeras y la aplicación de las terapias complementarias (TC) en los cuidados de enfermería al paciente oncológico. Ámbito de estudio: El estudio se realizó en el hospital Duran i Reynals de l"Hospitalet de Llobregat, en las unidades de: hematología clínica, terapia intensiva, tratamiento programado, hospital de día, oncología médica, cuidados paliativos, consultas externas, soporte de la atención continuada, servicio de oncología radioterápica y en el equipo de soporte hospitalario. Diseño: Estudio descriptivo transversal. Método: Aplicación de un cuestionario elaborado que consta de dos apartados, uno de datos demográficos y otro apartado con 8 preguntas especificas. Participantes: Enfermeras del área asistencial de todos los turnos que trabajen en las unidades mencionadas. Análisis de datos: Para el análisis de los datos se ha utilizado el paquete estadístico SPSS15.0 para Windows y se ha realizado un análisis descriptivo para todas las variables. Variables cualitativas: frecuencias y porcentajes. Variables cuantitativas: medidas de tendencia central y de dispersión. Resultados: El 58,8% de las enfermeras ha realizado algún tipo de formación en TC. Las intervenciones mente-cuerpo son las más efectuadas en cuanto a formación, seguidas de las terapias manuales y las terapias de base energética. La relajación-visualización es la terapia que más aplican las enfermeras oncológicas. Conclusiones: La formación de las enfermeras oncológicas en las TC es fundamental para poder informar y asesorar a sus pacientes y poder cuidarlos de una forma más holística. La falta de tiempo y de disposición del hospital al reconocimiento y valor de las TC son los principales factores de dificultad que se encuentran las enfermeras oncológicas.

El crecimiento de la población con enfermedad crónica supone un aumento de la demanda asistencial. Para dar respuesta a esta situación el Instituto Catalán de la Salud puso en marcha en el área de la ciudad de Barcelona el 'Centre de Seguiment de Malalties Croniques' (Centro de Seguimiento de Enfermedades Crónicas -CSMC-). La finalidad del centro es promover el autocuidado, empoderar al paciente y dar soporte asistencial a distancia. El CSMC es un dispositivo de seguimiento telefónico proactivo enfermero que atiende a pacientes con Insuficiencia Cardiaca (IC) de forma transversal entre Atención Primaria (AP) y Atención Hospitalaria (AH), compartiendo la historia clínica informatizada, que incluye el proceso y lenguaje enfermero. Desde el centro se trabajan los conocimientos, las habilidades y la motivación de los pacientes. Desde su inicio se ha dado cobertura a 1.400 pacientes, cuya edad media es de 78 años y la mayor parte se encuentran en clase funcional 2-3, según la New York Heart Association (NYHA). Se han observado tendencia positivas en el autocuidado, cumplimiento farmacológico, adherencia al autocontrol del peso y el aumento de la cobertura vacunal antineumocócica. La atención telefónica está siendo una estrategia útil para la gestión compartida en el seguimiento ambulatorio del paciente crónico, pudiéndose extrapolar a usuarios con otras enfermedades crónicas.

The degree of fusion at the anterior aspect of the sacral vertebrae has been scored in 242 male and female skeletons from the Lisbon documented collection, ranging in age from 16 to 59 years old. Statistical tests indicate a sex difference towards earlier fusion in young females compared with young males, as well as a clear association between degree of fusion and age. Similar results have been found in documented skeletal samples from Coimbra and Sassari, and the recommendations stated by these authors regarding age estimation have been positively tested in the Lisbon collection. Although more research from geographically diverse samples is required, a general picture of the pattern of sacral fusion and its associations with age and sex is emerging. We also provide a practical example of the usefulness of the sacrum in age estimation in a forensic setting, a mass grave from the Spanish Civil War. It is concluded that the scoring of the degree of fusion of the sacral vertebrae, specially of S1-2, can be a simple tool for assigning skeletons to broad age groups, and it should be implemented as another resource for age estimation in the study of human skeletal remains.

El artículo hace una revisión de aquellas intervenciones artísticas que abordan determinados usos del territorio urbano y formas de cultivo. Actuaciones que mediante la acción de plantar y cultivar generan espacios para la expresión de identidades artísticas, políticas y sociales. Estos lugares encuentran asentamiento en los intersticios de nuestras ciudades, en espacios vacíos como solares abandonados, en zonas no urbanizables o semi urbanizadas, en riberas de ríos, arcenes de autopistas, márgenes de vías de tren, etc. The paper reviews those specific artistic interventions that address urban land uses and farming methods. Actions that through the act of planting and cultivating generate spaces for the expression of artistic, political and social identities. These places are settling in the interstices of our cities, in empty spaces such as brownfield sites, in non-urbanized or semi urbanized areas, on riverbanks, highways verges, railways edges, etc.

Background and purpose: The TP53 induced glycolysis and apoptosis regulator (TIGAR) functions to lower fructose-2,6-bisphosphate (Fru-2,6-P2) levels in cells, consequently decreasing glycolysis and leading to the scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which correlate with a higher resistance to cell death. The decrease in intracellular ROS levels in response to TIGAR may also play a role in the ability of p53 to protect from the accumulation of genomic lesions. Given these good prospects of TIGAR for metabolic regulation and p53-response modulation, we analyzed the effects of TIGAR knockdown in U87MG and T98G glioblastoma-derived cell lines. Methods/results: After TIGAR-knockdown in glioblastoma cell lines, different metabolic parameters were assayed, showing an increase in Fru-2,6-P2, lactate and ROS levels, with a concomitant decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. In addition, cell growth was inhibited without evidence of apoptotic or autophagic cell death. In contrast, a clear senescent phenotype was observed. We also found that TIGAR protein levels were increased shortly after irradiation. In addition, avoiding radiotherapy-triggered TIGAR induction by gene silencing resulted in the loss of capacity of glioblastoma cells to form colonies in culture and the delay of DNA repair mechanisms, based in c-H2AX foci, leading cells to undergo morphological changes compatible with a senescent phenotype. Thus, the results obtained raised the possibility to consider TIGAR as a therapeutic target to increase radiotherapy effects. Conclusion: TIGAR abrogation provides a novel adjunctive therapeutic strategy against glial tumors by increasing radiation-induced cell impairment, thus allowing the use of lower radiotherapeutic doses.

It is often assumed that total head losses in a sand filter are solely due to the filtration media and that there are analytical solutions, such as the Ergun equation, to compute them. However, total head losses are also due to auxiliary elements (inlet and outlet pipes and filter nozzles), which produce undesirable head losses because they increase energy requirements without contributing to the filtration process. In this study, ANSYS Fluent version 6.3, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software program, was used to compute head losses in different parts of a sand filter. Six different numerical filter models of varying complexities were used to understand the hydraulic behavior of the several filter elements and their importance in total head losses. The simulation results show that 84.6% of these were caused by the sand bed and 15.4% were due to auxiliary elements (4.4% in the outlet and inlet pipes, and 11.0% in the perforated plate and nozzles). Simulation results with different models show the important role of the nozzles in the hydraulic behavior of the sand filter. The relationship between the passing area through the nozzles and the passing area through the perforated plate is an important design parameter for the reduction of total head losses. A reduced relationship caused by nozzle clogging would disproportionately increase the total head losses in the sand filter

The studies that have been carried out about the history of contemporary Catalan have used, generally, sources coming from literary, intellectual and politician fields. Often, sources from common people have been omitted. However, they are documents which provide a very important proof to notice not only the Catalan vitality but also the level of the application of the current rules. This article proposes to highlight ordinary writings as an object of study that will allow us analyze several aspects related to the history of language and sociolinguistics. The study focuses on the ordinary writings that emerged in the Republican exile in 1939, a capital period in the production of such documents

Flushing is an important maintenance task that removes accumulated particles in microirrigation laterals that can help to reduce clogging problems. The effect of three dripline flushing frequency treatments (no flushing, one flushing at the end of each irrigation period, and a monthly flushing during the irrigation period) was studied in surface and subsurface drip irrigation systems that operated using a wastewater treatment plant effluent for three irrigation periods of 540 h each. The irrigation systems had two different emitters, one pressure compensating and the other not, both molded and welded onto the interior dripline wall, placed in laterals 87 meters long. Dripline flow of the pressure compensating emitter increased 8% over time, while in the nonpressure compensating emitter, dripline flow increased 25% in the surface driplines and decreased 3% in the subsurface driplines by the emitter clogging. Emitter clogging was affected primarily by the interactions between emitter location, emitter type, and flushing frequency treatment. The number of completely clogged emitters was affected by the interaction between irrigation system and emitter type. There was an average of 3.7% less totally clogged emitters in flushed surface driplines with the pressurecompensating emitter as compared to flushed subsurface laterals with the nonpressure compensating emitter
