Characterization and identification of printed objects

A study about the physical appearance of pre-photographic, photomechanical, photographic and digital positive reflective prints was made, relating the obtained images with the history, materials and technology used to create them. The studied samples are from the Image Permanence Institute (IPI) study collection. The digital images were obtained using a digital SLR on a copystand and a compound light microscope, with different lighting angles (0º, 45ºand 90º) and magnifications from overall views on the copystand down to a 20x objective lens on the microscope. Most of these images were originally created by IPI for www.digitalsamplebook.org, a web tool for teaching print identification, and will be used on the www.graphicsatlas.org website, along with textual information on identification, technology and history information about these reproduction processes.

The visual image in Epiphanic Short History

The visual image is a fundamental component of epiphany, stressing its immediacy and vividness, corresponding to the enargeia of the traditional ekphrasis and also playing with cultural and social meanings. Morris Beja in his seminal book Epiphany in the Modern Novel, draws our attention to the distinction made by Joyce between the epiphany originated in a common object, in a discourse or gesture and the one arising in “a memorable phase of the mind itself”. This type materializes in the “dream-epiphany” and in the epiphany based in memory. On the other hand, Robert Langbaum in his study of the epiphanic mode, suggests that the category of “visionary epiphany” could account for the modern effect of an internally glowing vision like Blake’s “The Tyger”, which projects the vitality of a real tyger. The short story, whose length renders it a fitting genre for the use of different types of epiphany, has dealt with the impact of the visual image in this technique, to convey different effects and different aesthetic aims. This paper will present some examples of this occurrence in short stories of authors in whose work epiphany is a fundamental concept and literary technique: Walter Pater, Joseph Conrad, K. Mansfield, Clarice Lispector. Pater’s “imaginary portraits” concentrate on “priviledged moments” of the lives of the characters depicting their impressions through pictorial language; Conrad tries to show “moments of awakening” that can be remembered by the eye; Mansfield suggests that epiphany, the “glimpse”, should replace plot as an internal ordering principle of her impressionist short-stories; in C. Lispector the visualization of some situations is so aggressive that it causes nausea and a radical revelation on the protagonist’s.

Á propos d’Erosphère propos d’Érosphère, dans un entretien pour la Revue LIEN2 en 1992, François Bayle explique que le projet d’une Suite fut déclenché par la composition de la 1ère œuvre du cycle – Tremblement de terre très doux. Il y indique : « je me suis petit à petit aperçu, en réalisant cette pièce, que j’y traitais d’un problème inhérent à l’acous- matique : celui du désir, [...] c’est-à-dire des sons appétissants, des sons voluptueux, ce qui m’a entraîné vers un projet plus vaste que j’ai appelé Érosphère, cette loi de gravitation du désir. »3 Plus tard le compositeur déclare : « Au moment d’Érosphère mon projet portait sur les mécanismes du désir, l’érotisme sonore, d’où le titre d’Éros- phère. Découvrir les archétypes érotiques des formes sonores. »4 Dans les notes qui accompagnaient la première édition en disque, Bayle présente sa définition du mot Érosphère : Ce tissu nerveux qui enveloppe notre monde habité d’un réseau d’ondes modulées à une infinité de fréquences, ce nuage de chaleur infra et supra sensorielle que diffusent des mégas milliards d’ émetteurs biologiques, cet anneau où circule la force de ce cosmos, je l’appelle l’érosphère.

Entretien avec François Bayle

La réalisation de cet entretien avec François Bayle a eu comme objectif premier d'approfondir la compréhension de sa conception du sonore. Le concept d’image de son (i-son) est évidemment l’élément central de sa pensée à propos du sonore. Nous l’avons approché en tant qu’élément présent dans l’espace et perçu par l’oreille. François Bayle nous présente le son en tant que présence porteuse de dimensions spatiales multiples. Il nous montre également que l’intentionnalité de l’écoute est un des éléments déterminants dans la perception des sons dans l’espace. Le compositeur rappelle enfin que les représentations mentales sont construites et que les images sonores de la musique sont composées.
