Taxes and labor supply: Portugal, Europe, and the United States (Conference version)

I relate hours worked with taxes on consumption and labor. I propose a model and compare its predictions for Portugal, France, Spain, United Kingdom and United States. Hours per worker in Portugal decreased from 35.1 in 1986 to 32.6 in 2001. With only the parameters and the taxes for Portugal, the model predicts the hours worked in 2001 with an error of only 12 minutes from the actual hours. Across countries, most predictions differ from the data by one hour or less. The model is able to explain the trend in hours with only the changes in taxes.

I relate hours worked with taxes on consumption and labor for Portugal, France, Spain, United Kingdom and United States. From 1986 to 2001, hours per worker in Portugal decreased from 35.1 to 32.6. With the parameters for Portugal, the model predicts hours worked in 2001 with an error of only 12 minutes from the actual hours. Across countries, most predictions differ from the data by one hour or less. The model is not sensible to special assumptions on the parameters. I calculate the long run effects of taxes on consumption, hours, capital and welfare for Portugal. I extend the model to discuss implications for Social Security. I discuss the steady state and the transition from a pay-as-you-go to a fully funded system.

Contributions à la Paléontologie du Miocène moyen continental du Bassin du Tage. I - Quelques mollusques - Pero Filho, Póvoa de Santarém, Sítio do Mirante

Some land and freshwater mollusks (Gastropoda, Pelecypoda) from three middle Miocene localities: Pêro Filho, Póvoa de Santarém, Sítio do Mirante, all in Ribatejo province, Portugal, are summarily studied. On a systematical viewpoint it has been shown (see also Tableau): - the presence of the genus Janulus, whose species only survive now at Madeira and Canary's islands; - the presence of "Helix" cotteri that may indeed belong in the genus Megalotachea, common in western Europe since "Helvetian" to Messinian times; - Limax, Testacella, Acroloxus and Pseudamnicola are quoted for the first time in portuguese tertiary formations; Ferrisia has been identified for the first time in Iberian Peninsule; - the presence of other forms previously quoted by ANTUNES & ZBYSZEWSKI (1973), is confirmed: Bithynia, Theodoxus, Pisidium. Such faunules are compatible with a middle Miocene age. On a paleobiogeographical viewpoint, some forms suggest mediterranean affinities. Fossil associations do correspond ecologically to either palustrine or stagnant, calm and shallow water conditions (Sítio do Mirante, and essentially also Póvoa de Santarém), or to fluviatile conditions (Pêro Filho).

Notes on the Cretaceous invertebrate faunas of Portugal I: a new species of Anadromus (Mollusca, Gastropoda) from the Campanian-Maastrichtian of Taveiro (Coimbra, West central Portugal)

A new species of terrestrial gastropod - Anadromus penai sp. nov. (Fam. Anadromidae) - is described from a set of composite moulds collected in reddish silts and clays of Campanian-Maastrichtian age, found in the lower pan of the Taveiro Formation (Taveiro, Coimbra, West Central Portugal). The known occurrences of this new species are restricted to the type locality. The main differences from other contemporaneous Anadromidae are the profuse spiral sculpture of the body-whorl, with 20-22 sub-equal, close, and regular ribs.
