Body and transcendence in Virginia Woolf and Clarice Lispector = Corpo e transcend��ncia em Virg��nia Woolf e Clarice Lispector

Virginia Woolf and Clarice Lispector belong to quite different historical, political and cultural contexts. Beyond its antecedents and roots in European modernism, Brazilian modernism developed according to peculiar patterns and lines, cultivating, for example, more clearly political, nationalist and regionalist tendencies than happened in the British area. Molly Hite���s essay ���Virginia Woolf���s Two Bodies��� suggests the existence of two kinds of body represented and perhaps experienced by Virginia Woolf: ���one kind was the body for others, the body cast in social roles���, the other, the ���visionary body���, a second physical presence, which brings into play new perspectives on the female modernist body and new strategies of political and aesthetic representation. It is this ���visionary body���, that, in many moments, intersects with transcendence. These two kinds of body are also present in Clarice Lispector���s work, structured, of course, around other complexities and gradations, explained by a different temporal context, but still touching common seminal questions. In Lispector, it is through the body cast in social roles that you reach the ���visionary body��� and transcendence. The movement is not a flight, as in Woolf, on the contrary it is a necessity, a condition to get to the essence.

Molecular regulation of secondary gorwth: searching for SHORT-ROOT function in cork formation

The analysis of molecular regulators involved in controlling the maintenance and function of plant meristems has been the subject of many studies. Some master regulators of these processes have been identified in Arabidopsis benefiting from the array of tools available for genetic and molecular analysis in this model plant. However, aspects such as secondary growth that are more extensively observed in woody plants, have been less studied. Secondary growth is responsible for the enlargement of the plant stems and roots and results from the activity of the lateral (secondary) meristems, vascular cambium and cork cambium (phellogen), which produce two important renewable natural resources, wood and cork, respectively.(...)

Real convergence in per capita output and growth in Eurozone: A time-series approach

The real convergence hypothesis has spurred a myriad of empirical tests and approaches in the economic literature. This Work Project intends to test for real output and growth convergence in all N(N-1)/2 possible pairs of output and output growth gaps of 14 Eurozone countries. This paper follows a time-series approach, as it tests for the presence of unit roots and persistence changes in the above mentioned pairs of output gaps, as well as for the existence of growth convergence with autoregressive models. Overall, significantly greater evidence has been found to support growth convergence rather than output convergence in our sample.

In Search of the Origins of Modernism: Venice and the Crisis of Classical Architecture in the mid-eighteenth century

This paper attempts to prove that in the years 1735 to 1755 Venice was the birthplace and cradle of Modern architectural theory, generating a major crisis in classical architecture traditionally based on the Vitruvian assumption that it imitates early wooden structures in stone or in marble. According to its rationalist critics such as the Venetian Observant Franciscan friar and architectural theorist Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761) and his nineteenth-century followers, classical architecture is singularly deceptive and not true to the nature of materials, in other words, dishonest and fallacious. This questioning did not emanate from practising architects, but from Lodoli himself��� a philosopher and educator of the Venetian patriciate ��� who had not been trained as an architect. The roots of this crisis lay in a new approach to architecture stemming from the new rationalist philosophy of the Enlightenment age with its emphasis on reason and universal criticism.

A defini����o de pirataria ou a desmistifica����o da sua origem, no tempo e espa��o, revela maiores dificuldades do que atualmente. Com este trabalho propusemo-nos a estudar como �� que a pirataria era perpetrada e entendida no passado, bem como no presente. Tamb��m nos propomos a identificar limita����es legais e as medidas operativas no combate �� pirataria, como por exemplo: limites conceptuais, lacunas, estrat��gias, entre outros. Por outro lado, atendemos as solu����es encontradas no combate �� pirataria sem deixar de observar fraqueza da lei e conflitos entre jurisdi����es. Por fim, o curso da hist��ria d��-nos a seguinte percep����o: a pirataria era tida como crime se fosse contra os interesses das na����es. O desinteresse dos Estados para reprimir a pirataria possibilitou o seu aumento, prolifera����o, dom��nio e sofistica����o em certas regi��es do Mundo. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo trazer para o centro da discuss��o os direitos humanos numa perspetiva tripla: proibi����o da pirataria, supress��o e ra��zes, aliando o estudo de poss��veis respostas a dar a esta epidemia.

A ind��stria de defesa na coopera����o Brasil-Portugal

The global dynamics of alliances are strongly determined by the level of cooperation among states. This cooperation can be embodied in various aspects, but the level of defense and security cooperation becomes usually more doctrinal and lasting. By the nature of sovereignty that instills in the bilateral relationship, cooperation at defense and security level can leverages other forms of cooperation. The circumstances and relational balance between Brazil and Portugal seem to evolve towards distancing opportunities, despite they are culturally and institutionally untainted. The economic dynamics, the strategic projection in global sustainability terms, the scale and ambition of Brazilian regional leadership, contrasts with the actual context of Portugal, distancing himself both on the stage where they operate. On the other hand, the historical and cultural roots, the language, the affinity of the peoples of CPLP and some opportunities for economic niches, trend to attract both countries. The condition of Portugal in NATO and Europe, coupled with the ability to export technical and human resources to value-added for Brazil, seems also to become approaching factors. On the balance of these dynamics, there is a set of exogenous factors (economic, external global relations matrix, regional stability, among others), which are not always controlled by any of both countries. These factors call for strong capacity for foresight analysis and decision making, with the inherent risk. There is cooperation vectors that are not apparently penalized by geographic distance, or by the difference of realities. Among these vectors we shall highlight synergies in technological niches, highly tradable goods and, mostly, using the domain of dual technologies. The thirteen niches herein identified are: Monitoring, Navigation, Command and Control, Electronics, Optoelectronics, Communication and remote sensing, Information Technologies, Flight Simulation, Specialized Training, Fiber Optic Sensors, Materials Engineering, Nanotechnology and Communications. Cumulating with identified opportunities in traditional relational framework, both countries are growing (in geography and economic terms) into the Atlantic, making it a central element in the bilateral approach. By being at the same time a growing stage of disputes and which stability tends to be threatened, it will be done an analysis of these synergistic vectors, superimposed on the impact on Atlantic securitization process.

A modinha brasileira : trajet��ria e veleidades (s��culos XVIII-XX)

A modinha �� um g��nero musical que se encontra nas ra��zes musicais tanto de Portugal quanto do Brasil. Em ambos os pa��ses a modinha vem a se caracterizar como m��sica nacional, mas as suas origens nos levam ao meio rural portugu��s dos s��culos XVI e XVII e �� chamada moda portuguesa. Ap��s percorrer uma trajet��ria de cerca de duzentos anos, a modinha vem a desaparecer no s��culo XX, no Brasil (enquanto em Portugal sua pr��tica j�� havia sido abandonada em meados do s��culo XIX), mas ainda assim deixando extenso legado. A modinha se adaptou a diferentes sociedades e per��odos e assimilou diversos g��neros musicais, sendo de igual forma influenciada por diferentes correntes liter��rias. O g��nero foi retratado por viajantes, religiosos, autoridades e esteve presente tanto nos saraus dos pal��cios da corte e dos sal��es das elites, quanto nas serenatas noturnas, entoadas por seresteiros. Procuramos aqui, atrav��s de grande variedade de fontes e documentos hist��ricos remontar a trajet��ria da modinha, desde suas origens at�� sua dissipa����o, ressaltando ainda poss��veis desvios que possa ter tomado, ao que chamamos de veleidades.
