Espírito Santo Saúde: The bidding war

This case study describes the current situation of Espírito Santo Saúde, which involved an eventful takeover process. The company initially went public on February 2014 and later that year, due to the financial situation of its holdings it had to be sold. The bidding war began in August 2014, after Ángeles announced the first offer. Other participants who also pitched bids include José de Mello Saúde, UnitedHealth and Fosun. Furthermore, the potential projects Espírito Santo Saúde was considering implementing prior to the sale and the current situation of the healthcare industry in Portugal, will also be analysed.

Electoral observation: Evidence from Mozambique

Electoral fraud is a common problem in young democracies. Election observers constitute one possible remedy. Yet, quantitative evidence of the exact effects of observers is scarce. Data on the random assignment of observers during Mozambique’s 2009 general elections is used to estimate the impact that observers have on ballot fraud. It is shown that the presence of national observers reduces high levels of turnout and manipulation of ballots. The findings contribute to the understanding of the behavior of politicians and have implications for the implementation of observer missions.

BRISA’S takeover offer

This project is composed by a Case Study regarding Tagus’ takeover offer for Brisa. The case study describes each player involved in the operation: the target company – Brisa, the acquirers – José de Mello and Arcus; as well as the circumstances surrounding the takeover, with a description of the takeover itself and the conflict between the acquirers and Abertis. Associated to the case, there is a group of six question and their respective answers, regarding the motive of the takeover, the price per share, what should be the positions of Brisa’s shareholders regarding the takeover and the reason Brisa’s share price declined after the success of the operation.

How to increase brand value expanding the category and brand presence to the main meal occasion for Sumol- Compal

Having registered negative retail value growth of 4% in Portugal in 2014, the juice category is set to decline further by 5,5% until 2019. Manufacturers of juices and nectars are therefore increasingly looking for new categories in order to balance this negative forecast in their home territory. One apparent growth opportunity for Compal, the leading producer of juices and nectars, is to expand its commercial reach to new occasions of consumption. This report carefully analyzes the opportunities related to an expansion to the main meal occasion and introduces a complete marketing and communications plan for a possible new main meal juice, Compal à Mesa. The product concept represents a rather premium positioning for the main meal occasion, including new flavor mixes that are targeted at different occasions of meals. Desenvolvimento de competências digitais nos internos da Associação Assistencial Amigos do Amanhã

A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar mediante observações e entrevistas as consequências da implantação de uma política inclusiva, utilizando-se de tecnologias de informação e comunicação (TIC) em uma associação assistencial. Possibilitando, através da disponibilização de computadores e programas educativos, observar o desenvolvimento do sujeito portador de condições cognitivas desfavoráveis em função de problemas associados a fatores físicos e socioeconômicos. Buscou-se com este trabalho, através de uma abordagem qualitativa de natureza aplicada, analisar quais elementos determinantes de boa absorção de conteúdos e desenvolvimento de competências estão suscetíveis a entraves, verificando-se o quanto do fator motivacional pode estar envolvido no processo, identificando formas de se trabalhar a retenção e participação dos internos da instituição. A diversidade de anseios e expectativas associadas às condições cognitivas de cada participante foi determinante para acarear as representações de grupos distintos em suas particularidades, onde cada indivíduo apresentava uma resposta diferente aos estímulos apresentados durante o processo de exposição do material educacional. Concluiu-se que a política de inclusão digital objetivando minimizar os efeitos da marginalização de um contingente esquecido pela sociedade, tem de estabelecer critérios de continuidade e diversificação, onde, além de perseguir resultados voltados ao desenvolvimento de competências, deve possibilitar momentos de ludicidade para todos os internos em associações assistenciais.
