The Smart Grid environment allows the integration of resources of small and medium players through the use of Demand Response programs. Despite the clear advantages for the grid, the integration of consumers must be carefully done. This paper proposes a system which simulates small and medium players. The system is essential to produce tests and studies about the active participation of small and medium players in the Smart Grid environment. When comparing to similar systems, the advantages comprise the capability to deal with three types of loads – virtual, contextual and real. It can have several loads optimization modules and it can run in real time. The use of modules and the dynamic configuration of the player results in a system which can represent different players in an easy and independent way. This paper describes the system and all its capabilities.

This paper proposes and reports the development of an open source solution for the integrated management of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud computing resources, through the use of a common API taxonomy, to incorporate open source and proprietary platforms. This research included two surveys on open source IaaS platforms (OpenNebula, OpenStack and CloudStack) and a proprietary platform (Parallels Automation for Cloud Infrastructure - PACI) as well as on IaaS abstraction solutions (jClouds, Libcloud and Deltacloud), followed by a thorough comparison to determine the best approach. The adopted implementation reuses the Apache Deltacloud open source abstraction framework, which relies on the development of software driver modules to interface with different IaaS platforms, and involved the development of a new Deltacloud driver for PACI. The resulting interoperable solution successfully incorporates OpenNebula, OpenStack (reuses pre-existing drivers) and PACI (includes the developed Deltacloud PACI driver) nodes and provides a Web dashboard and a Representational State Transfer (REST) interface library. The results of the exchanged data payload and time response tests performed are presented and discussed. The conclusions show that open source abstraction tools like Deltacloud allow the modular and integrated management of IaaS platforms (open source and proprietary), introduce relevant time and negligible data overheads and, as a result, can be adopted by Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) cloud providers to circumvent the vendor lock-in problem whenever service response time is not critical.

The goal of the present paper is to analyse the classic entrepreneurship strategies (Innovation, Risk and Proactivity) in small and medium-sized businesses. However as presented in the title, the study will go further by comparing the results of those strategies in familiar and nonfamiliar businesses. This study was carried on in construction and industry sectors, in the region of Vale do Sousa, in the north of Portugal. In order to classify businesses as familiar or non-familiar types two criterion were adopted: (1) Management Control, (2) Family Employability. On the opposite to some studies that present a larger percentage of familiar businesses in national and European entrepreneurial fabric, the criterion used leaded to a larger number of non-familiar businesses (53%). The results showed that in general SMEs in this region are not following entrepreneurship strategies. Analysing the entire sample without a separation of businesses by nature (familiar/non-familiar) only proactivity showed to be more present in the managerial decisions. There is a lack of innovation and risk culture. Comparing the groups only on proactivity tests was possible to verify some differences. It was concluded that non-familiar businesses are more proactive than familiar ones. Between those groups there are no statistical differences on the means of the variables innovation and risk. At the same time some tests were conducted to test the differences on the variable entrepreneurship. The results were similar to innovation and risk strategies: There are no significant differences on entrepreneurship between these groups of businesses.

Portugal is a small economy, with an open domestic market that needs competitive exporters to prosper. Trade fairs are an international promotion tool that can be used by firms when considering export development and expansion. This study identifies and evaluates the critical factors that influenced the decision making process of Portuguese SME’s (Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises) managers to participate (or not) in international trade fairs. The results indicate that the firm’s critical decisions factors to select an international trade fair were value for money and the stand (location, typology and size)

Os sistemas de informação integrados contribuem para a gestão eficiente das empresas, seja na organização e funcionamento internos ou nas relações externas. O mercado deste software é dominado pelas empresas que criam e distribuem sistemas proprietários. Existe uma alternativa, software livre, que disponibiliza aplicações em código aberto e maioritariamente de licença gratuita, que pode ser adaptado às necessidades das empresas. O objetivo do presente trabalho é avaliar a viabilidade de plataformas livres, de natureza vertical – OFBiz – e horizontal – Spring – como opção na escolha de um sistema de informação nas Pequenas e Médias Empresas portuguesas. Das áreas de negócio principais das organizações, foi selecionada a área de Recursos Humanos para efeitos de adaptação na aplicação OFBiz, com incidência em dois casos de uso: uma opção essencial, mas que atualmente não está prevista – Processamento de vencimentos – e outra já existente e que é avaliada em termos de necessidades de adaptação – Recrutamento. Sendo o idioma um requisito indispensável à internacionalização da aplicação, foi também analisada a sua implementação. A metodologia de investigação utilizada foi o Design Science Research, tendo sido implementado um protótipo para efeitos de teste e avaliação do projeto, com a elaboração de dois modelos: configuração e desenvolvimento. Implementado o protótipo, verificou-se que a framework vertical apresenta-se como uma alternativa mais viável do que a horizontal, pelas funcionalidades já existentes e que facilitam a adequação às necessidades de informação das Pequenas e Médias Empresas. A sua base tecnológica e de estrutura permite que a aplicação possa ser adaptada por técnicos especialistas das próprias empresas.

É cada vez mais forte e natural o desenvolvimento de aplicações móveis. Hoje em dia qualquer pessoa seja de forma amadora ou profissional tenta tirar o máximo partido do seu dispositivo móvel, através de aplicações desenvolvidas para as mais diversas áreas. Um dos sistemas operativos que mais programadores apostam é no Android devido à sua versatilidade e ás suas capacidades enquanto sistema operativo dentro de um smartphone. Para além dessas mais-valias, desenvolver uma aplicação para Android não tem qualquer custo, apenas terá, caso seja uma aplicação para adicionar a Google Play Store, caso contrário pode desenvolver-se qualquer tipo de aplicação sem custos, o que não acontece com outros sistemas operativos. Tendo em conta os custos, é normal as pequenas e médias empresas tentarem investir neste tipo de desenvolvimento, pois evitam gastos em licenciamentos para produzir os seus produtos. Seguindo este contexto, esta dissertação insere-se nesse perfil, isto é, tentar encontrar uma solução com baixos custos e que produza os resultados pretendidos. Através das mais diversas API’s é possível adaptar o sistema operativo Android a qualquer área apenas basta enquadrar da melhor maneira ideias e dar asas à imaginação. Desta forma, esta dissertação irá centrar-se na área industrial, na qual o Android pode e deve ser bastante útil, se for usado com rigor. Irá ser abordado o desenvolvimento de aplicações móveis e serão analisadas as tecnologias envolventes no projeto assim como algumas das principais soluções já implementadas e desenvolvidas por empresas no setor e para o sector industrial. O projeto aborda também de que forma é possível aliar o sistema operativo Android á área industrial de forma a permitir um melhor desempenho por parte de todos em prol da empresa á qual está associado. A necessidade de criação desta aplicação, surgiu numa perspectiva de melhoria contínua, com o objectivo de abandonar o procedimento instituído, que era realizado manualmente, passando a fazê-lo de uma forma automática e mais interativa. O processo será realizado pelos colaboradores e terá sempre o seu contributo, mas de uma forma mais rigorosa, simples e eficiente, aumentando a qualidade do serviço.

Globalisation has eliminated frontiers and in the case of Europe helped the crossing of borders and changed forever the concept of social (and I would also say individual) geography: the rest of the world is out there; we can pretend not to see it, but we cannot avoid it. Moreover, Europe is undergoing a serious crisis, also economic, and new markets and business partners are welcome. In this context, cultural bonds like a common language can open new investment paths and give rise to successful stories. In this paper we intend to present an example of how low linguistic distance can lead to good business, even if a) in the internationalization process of the companies’ language is often forgotten as a management element and b) consumers of language products (like User Guides) are also not stimulating investment in language by the companies. Through the results of 2 studies carried out in 2010 and 2011 we will show how a pluricentric language like Portuguese is managed in multinational companies (MC) and Small and medium Enterprises (SMEs). The second study is based on an online survey questioning the effectiveness, efficiency and general quality of User Guides and the reaction of consumers to language. Results show that although playing a role in the internationalization process of companies in the same linguistic space, language is opportunistically used. On the other hand, Portuguese and Brazilian consumers show a very functional perception of the Portuguese language...

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of different manual techniques on cervical ranges of 17 motion and pressure pain sensitivity in subjects with latent trigger point of the upper trapezius muscle. 18 Methods: One hundred seventeen volunteers, with a unilateral latent trigger point on upper trapezius due to computer 19 work, were randomly divided into 5 groups: ischemic compression (IC) group (n = 24); passive stretching group (n = 20 23); muscle energy technique group (n = 23); and 2 control groups, wait-and-see group (n = 25) and placebo group 21 (n = 22). Cervical spine range of movement was measured using a cervical range of motion instrument as well as 22 pressure pain sensitivity by means of an algometer and a visual analog scale. Outcomes were assessed pretreatment, 23 immediately, and 24 hours after the intervention and 1 week later by a blind researcher. A 4 × 5 mixed repeated- 24 measures analysis of variance was used to examine the effects of the intervention and Cohen d coefficient was used. 25 Results: A group-by-time interaction was detected in all variables (P b .01), except contralateral rotation. The 26 immediate effect sizes of the contralateral flexion, ipsilateral rotation, and pressure pain threshold were large for 3 27 experimental groups. Nevertheless, after 24 hours and 1 week, only IC group maintained the effect size. 28 Conclusions: Manual techniques on upper trapezius with latent trigger point seemed to improve the cervical range of 29 motion and the pressure pain sensitivity. The dynamic of the international business and its multidimensional nature requires the understanding of the complexities of different contexts dictated by cultural differences between countries. The purpose of this paper is to study, in depth howsmall and medium-sized companies develop their international marketing mix strategy in their overseas subsidiaries. We use the theoretical construct of Hofstede (1980, 1991) in the dimensions of Power Distance (PD), Uncertainty Avoidance (UA), Individualism (IND), Masculinity (MASC) and Long-Term Orientation (LTO) to assess the cross cultural differences between countries and the business practices to analyze the adaptation or standardization of the international marketing mix strategy of foreign Portuguese subsidiaries. Ourstudy uses an exploratoryand qualitative methodology. We conducted semi-structured interviews in order to achieve a good understanding ofinternational marketing mix strategy of four companies from different sectors. Our results show that the national cultural differences have great influence in the marketing strategy of the subsidiary. The business practices adjustments in the subsidiary company that proved to be necessary conditions for their performance are conducted by the products augmented offerings concerning the characteristics of the product, design and brand name in order to meet the requirements and specificities of the host country of the subsidiary.
