Resumo:
O transporte marítimo sempre assumiu uma importância primordial no transporte, quer de pessoas como de mercadorias. O uso das vias marítimas para o transporte de mercadorias é uma prática utilizada desde os tempos antigos. O transporte marítimo na Europa sempre foi uma forma eficaz e de baixo custo de transportar passageiros e mercadorias de um local para outro. Atualmente, todos os modos de transporte necessitam de melhorar a sua eficiência e reduzir o montante de poluentes que libertam para o meio-ambiente. O transporte marítimo de curta distância (TMCD) é parte essencial no sistema de transporte multimodal Europeu representando cerca de 37% das transações intracomunitárias (tkm). Os resultados alcançados advêm desde que, em 2001, a European Shortsea Network (ESN) em parceria com os Shortsea Promotion Centres (SPC) de cada Estado-Membro da União Europeia (EU) conseguiram efetuar progressos significativos na promoção e desenvolvimento do transporte por esta via. Esta tese de mestrado pretende caraterizar o TMCD na EU e em Portugal e a sua articulação com os outros meios de transporte de mercadorias. Será também analisada a situação Portuguesa ao nível do transporte marítimo de mercadorias fazendo especial relevância à mercadoria contentorizada, às infraestruturas atualmente existentes em Portugal assim como às perspetivas futuras para o setor. A metodologia utilizada inclui a revisão de literatura da investigação efetuada sobre o setor, a recolha de informação primária através do instrumento inquérito e a recolha de informação estatística a partir de fontes secundárias, permitindo a caraterização do setor. O inquérito foi desenvolvido e partilhado com mais de um milhar de empresas a operar em Portugal, nas que se incluem as empresas transportadoras, operadores logísticos, agentes de navegação e as principais empresas exportadoras/importadoras a operar em Portugal, tendo-se obtido 106 respostas válidas. A nível nacional, o inquérito realizado permitiu confirmar que os principais portos logísticos para a movimentação internacional de mercadorias são os portos de Leixões, Lisboa, Sines e Setúbal, estando a maioria das empresas inquiridas localizadas no hinterland destes portos. O inquérito permitiu também concluir que o facto de o transporte rodoviário ser um meio de transporte rápido, de baixo custo para curtas e médias distâncias, de elevada frequência de transporte, de oferecer elevada capacidade e diversos tipos de carga transportada, de oferecer serviços Porta-a-Porta, da elevada flexibilidade e mobilidade oferecida, assim como a rapidez das operações de carga e descarga continuam a contribuir para a elevada competitividade deste modo de transporte de mercadorias, sendo as razões pelo qual este modo é escolhido, pese embora, ser o modo mais poluente por tonelada transportada. Os modos de transporte TMCD e ferroviário apenas são alvo de escolha, como modo de transporte de mercadorias, por parte das empresas mais responsáveis socialmente e ambiental. O inquérito permitiu ainda concluir que, para haver uma melhor articulação entre o TMCD com outros meios de transporte, é necessário que sejam disponibilizados novos serviços, portos e terminais logísticos com serviços privatizados, assim como a redução das tarifas aplicáveis TMCD.

Os robots de movimentação de chapa são bastantes úteis para as empresas de metalomecânica. De facto, cada vez mais existem máquinas de corte por jato de água, laser ou outros processos, nos quais os robots apresentam um papel importante na carga e descarga do material. O trabalho realizado apresenta novas soluções aos sistemas de movimentação existentes no mercado, e permite reduzir os custos na movimentação do material. Este projeto serve essencialmente para chapas em trajetória retilínea, e efetuar o seu levantamento do equipamento e deposição em estrutura de suporte (ou viceversa). A vantagem a ter em conta é a diminuição dos custos de movimentação do material. Neste trabalho apresentou-se a metodologia de dimensionamento de um robot automatizado que transporta chapas com um peso máximo de 3500 kg, tendo por base as normas do EC3-P1.8 e o Método de Elementos Finitos (MEF). No decurso do projeto foram abordadas os seguintes temas: Abordagem inicial da geometria através do Solidworks; Dimensionamento da estrutura por software de Elementos Finitos, o Solidworks; Dimensionamento das correntes, carretos/discos ou coroas e rolamentos; Dimensionamento e seleção dos moto-redutores, bomba de vácuo e ventosas; Cálculo das solicitações em cada membro da estrutura por software de análise estrutural, o Multiframe3D, e respetivo dimensionamento das ligações aparafusadas e soldadas; Elaboração dos desenhos de projeto finais, processos de fabrico e custos; Dimensionamento do acionamento, MG e disposição dos dispositivos no quadro elétrico. Como conclusão refere-se que se conseguiu realizar o projeto e obter uma solução final otimizada, com a ajuda de ferramentas importantes, como sejam o MEF, resultando num equipamento cujas solicitações para a estrutura e sistema de movimentação foram otimizadas, resultando num equipamento eficiente, robusto, seguro e de custo reduzido.

In this work, an experimental study was performed on the influence of plug-filling, loading rate and temperature on the tensile strength of single-strap (SS) and double-strap (DS) repairs on aluminium structures. Whilst the main purpose of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of plug-filling for the strength improvement of these repairs, a parallel study was carried out to assess the sensitivity of the adhesive to external features that can affect the repairs performance, such as the rate of loading and environmental temperature. The experimental programme included repairs with different values of overlap length (L O = 10, 20 and 30 mm), and with and without plug-filling, whose results were interpreted in light of experimental evidence of the fracture modes and typical stress distributions for bonded repairs. The influence of the testing speed on the repairs strength was also addressed (considering 0.5, 5 and 25 mm/min). Accounting for the temperature effects, tests were carried out at room temperature (≈23°C), 50 and 80°C. This permitted a comparative evaluation of the adhesive tested below and above the glass transition temperature (T g), established by the manufacturer as 67°C. This paper presents work in progress, to develop an efficient and economic way to directly produce Technetium 99metastable (99mTc) using low-energy cyclotrons. Its importance is well established and relates with the increased global trouble in delivering 99mTc to Nuclear Medicine Departments relying on this radioisotope. Since the present delivery strategy has clearly demonstrated its intrinsic limits, our group decided to follow a distinct approach that uses the broad distribution of the low energy cyclotrons and the accessibility of Molybdenum 100 (100Mo) as the Target material. This is indeed an important issue to consider, since the system here presented, named CYCLOTECH, it is not based on the use of Highly Enriched (or even Low Enriched) Uranium 235 (235U), so entirely complying with the actual international trends and directives concerning the use of this potential highly critical material. The production technique is based on the nuclear reaction 100Mo (p,2n) 99mTc whose production yields have already been documented. Until this moment two Patent requests have already been submitted (the first at the INPI, in Portugal, and the second at the USPTO, in the USA); others are being prepared for submission on a near future. The object of the CYCLOTECH system is to present 99mTc to Nuclear Medicine radiopharmacists in a routine, reliable and efficient manner that, remaining always flexible, entirely blends with established protocols. To facilitate workflow and Radiation Protection measures, it has been developed a Target Station that can be installed on most of the existing PET cyclotrons and that will tolerate up to 400 μA of beam by allowing the beam to strike the Target material at an adequately oblique angle. The Target Station permits the remote and automatic loading and discharge of the Targets from a carriage of 10 Target bodies. On other hand, several methods of Target material deposition and Target substrates are presented. The object was to create a cost effective means of depositing and intermediate the target material thickness (25 - 100μm) with a minimum of loss on a substrate that is able to easily transport the heat associated with high beam currents. Finally, the separation techniques presented are a combination of both physical and column chemistry. The object was to extract and deliver 99mTc in the identical form now in use in radiopharmacies worldwide. In addition, the Target material is recovered and can be recycled.

A expansão da área ocupada pelo Porto de Leixões (Matosinhos e Leça da Palmeira), sobre solos muito compressíveis, de origem fluvial e marinha, leva a que seja necessário recorrer à engenharia para encontrar soluções adequadas à utilização de obras dos fins em vista. Assim, na zona do porto são muitos os projectos de engenharia civil/geotécnica executados nestes solos. Como exemplo, podem citar-se a Consolidação do Terrapleno e Construção dos Caminhos de Rolamento do Terminal de Contentores TC4S, a Reabilitação de um troço com 110m, do Cais Sul e do Cais Nascente da Doca nº 4 e a Construção da Portaria Principal do Porto de Leixões, todos no vale fóssil do rio Leça. São vastos os métodos a usar para o melhoramento destes solos, a colocação de colunas de brita, com o objectivo de reforçar o solo, aumentando a sua capacidade de carga e funcionando como drenos verticais, para solucionar o problema das deformações excessivas durante e após o final da obra, uma alternativa consiste em induzir a aceleração da consolidação da camada de solo mole, o uso de pré-carregamento e drenos verticais são usuais. Quando o tempo de concretização da obra exige que o aterro seja utilizado de imediato, uma solução viável é a colocação de estacas, que transferem o peso do aterro, ou parte dele, para camadas mais competentes. Também se pode proceder à retirada do solo original e substituí-lo por outro de qualidade superior. A mais recente técnica de melhoria de solos por injecção - jet grouting - é utilizada em diversas situações, incluindo obras provisórias e definitivas. O presente trabalho visa descrever, em função dos diversos factores, o comportamento do solo face aos vários métodos utilizados e os objectivos pretendidos que serão abordados no enquadramento empírico do trabalho.

A indústria de componentes para automóveis necessita de constante inovação, no sentido de manter a elevada competitividade, imprescindível à sobrevivência de qualquer empresa neste sector. A automação e robótica são vias incontornáveis para a prossecução dos objetivos de produtividade desejados. Mesmo dentro da automação, a evolução é constante. Para além disso, a crescente inovação nos produtos fabricados, exige também novas soluções em termos de processos de fabrico. Isto leva a que, soluções válidas até uma determinada altura, passem facilmente a obsoletas, com necessidade premente de se implementarem novos sistemas que correspondam às necessidades atuais. Este trabalho teve por base uma necessidade detetada numa empresa fabricante de acessórios para a indústria automóvel: estruturas para estofo de assento automóvel, entre muitos outros. Atualmente, a estrutura do estofo automóvel assenta numa grelha constituída por um conjunto de arames, que é agregado por uma série de tiras de plástico injetadas em seu redor. As máquinas de injeção responsáveis por este processo têm superfície de apartação horizontal, e necessitam de mão-de-obra adjacente para a colocação dos arames no molde e descarga do conjunto, na razão de uma pessoa para duas máquinas, dependendo do tempo de ciclo da injeção. O trabalho consistiu no desenvolvimento de um sistema automático de alimentação e descarga da máquina de injeção, que tivesse por base um sistema já existente, mas que passasse a comportar outras funções até agora não desempenhadas pelos sistemas antigos, ou seja, que fossem capazes de ultrapassar os problemas colocados pela complexidade atual dos produtos em fabricação. O projeto foi concluído com sucesso, tendo sido validado pela empresa FicoCables, através da construção, teste e colocação em funcionamento de vários protótipos.

Os modelos a ser analisados pelo Método de Elementos Finitos são cada vez mais complexos e, nos tempos que correm, seria impensável realizar tais análises sem um apoio computorizado. Existe para esta finalidade uma vasta gama de programas que permitem realizar tarefas que passam pelo desenho de estruturas, análise estática de cargas, análise dinâmica e vibrações, visualização do comportamento físico (deformações) em tempo real, que permitem a otimização da estrutura. Sob o pretexto de permitir a qualquer utilizador uma análise de estruturas simples com o Método dos Elementos Finitos, surge esta tese, onde se irá criar de raiz um programa com interface gráfica no ambiente MATLAB® para análise de estruturas simples com dois tipos de elemento finito, triangular de deformação constante e quadrangular de deformação linear. O software desenvolvido, verificado por comparação com um software comercial dedicado para o efeito, efetua malhagem com elementos bidimensionais triangulares e quadriláteros e resolve modelos arbitrados pelo Método de Elementos Finitos, representando estes resultados visualmente e em formato tabular.

The evaluation of benzene in different environments such as indoor (with and without tobacco smoke), a city area, countryside, gas stations and near exhaust pipes from cars running on different types of fuels was performed. The samples were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detection (FID) and tandem mass spectrometric detection (MS/MS) (to confirm the identification of benzene in the air samples). Operating conditions for the GC-MS analysis were optimized as well as the sampling and sample preparation. The results obtained in this work indicate that i) the type of fuel directly influences the benzene concentration in the air. Gasoline with additives provided the highest amount of benzene followed by unleaded gasoline and diesel; ii) the benzene concentration in the gas station was always higher than the advisable limit established by law (5 μg m−3) and during the unloading of gasoline the achieved concentration was 8371 μg m−3; iii) the data from the countryside (Taliscas) and the urban city (Matosinhos) were below 5 μg m−3 except 5 days after a fire on a petroleum refinery plant located near the city; iv) it was proven that in coffee shops where smoking is allowed the benzene concentration is higher (6 μg m−3) than in coffee shops where this is forbidden (4 μg m−3). This method may also be helpful for environmental analytical chemists who use GC-MS/MS for the confirmation or/and quantification of benzene.

A simple procedure to measure the cohesive laws of bonded joints under mode I loading using the double cantilever beam test is proposed. The method only requires recording the applied load–displacement data and measuring the crack opening displacement at its tip in the course of the experimental test. The strain energy release rate is obtained by a procedure involving the Timoshenko beam theory, the specimen’s compliance and the crack equivalent concept. Following the proposed approach the influence of the fracture process zone is taken into account which is fundamental for an accurate estimation of the failure process details. The cohesive law is obtained by differentiation of the strain energy release rate as a function of the crack opening displacement. The model was validated numerically considering three representative cohesive laws. Numerical simulations using finite element analysis including cohesive zone modeling were performed. The good agreement between the inputted and resulting laws for all the cases considered validates the model. An experimental confirmation was also performed by comparing the numerical and experimental load–displacement curves. The numerical load–displacement curves were obtained by adjusting typical cohesive laws to the ones measured experimentally following the proposed approach and using finite element analysis including cohesive zone modeling. Once again, good agreement was obtained in the comparisons thus demonstrating the good performance of the proposed methodology.

The main aims of the present study are simultaneously to relate the brazing parameters with: (i) the correspondent interfacial microstructure, (ii) the resultant mechanical properties and (iii) the electrochemical degradation behaviour of AISI 316 stainless steel/alumina brazed joints. Filler metals on such as Ag–26.5Cu–3Ti and Ag–34.5Cu–1.5Ti were used to produce the joints. Three different brazing temperatures (850, 900 and 950 °C), keeping a constant holding time of 20 min, were tested. The objective was to understand the influence of the brazing temperature on the final microstructure and properties of the joints. The mechanical properties of the metal/ceramic (M/C) joints were assessed from bond strength tests carried out using a shear solicitation loading scheme. The fracture surfaces were studied both morphologically and structurally using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The degradation behaviour of the M/C joints was assessed by means of electrochemical techniques. It was found that using a Ag–26.5Cu–3Ti brazing alloy and a brazing temperature of 850 °C, produces the best results in terms of bond strength, 234 ± 18 MPa. The mechanical properties obtained could be explained on the basis of the different compounds identified on the fracture surfaces by XRD. On the other hand, the use of the Ag–34.5Cu–1.5Ti brazing alloy and a brazing temperature of 850 °C produces the best results in terms of corrosion rates (lower corrosion current density), 0.76 ± 0.21 μA cm−2. Nevertheless, the joints produced at 850 °C using a Ag–26.5Cu–3Ti brazing alloy present the best compromise between mechanical properties and degradation behaviour, 234 ± 18 MPa and 1.26 ± 0.58 μA cm−2, respectively. The role of Ti diffusion is fundamental in terms of the final value achieved for the M/C bond strength. On the contrary, the Ag and Cu distribution along the brazed interface seem to play the most relevant role in the metal/ceramic joints electrochemical performance.

This work reports on an experimental and finite element method (FEM) parametric study of adhesively-bonded single and double-strap repairs on carbon-epoxy structures under buckling unrestrained compression. The influence of the overlap length and patch thickness was evaluated. This loading gains a particular significance from the additional characteristic mechanisms of structures under compression, such as fibres microbuckling, for buckling restrained structures, or global buckling of the assembly, if no transverse restriction exists. The FEM analysis is based on the use of cohesive elements including mixed-mode criteria to simulate a cohesive fracture of the adhesive layer. Trapezoidal laws in pure modes I and II were used to account for the ductility of most structural adhesives. These laws were estimated for the adhesive used from double cantilever beam (DCB) and end-notched flexure (ENF) tests, respectively, using an inverse technique. The pure mode III cohesive law was equalled to the pure mode II one. Compression failure in the laminates was predicted using a stress-based criterion. The accurate FEM predictions open a good prospect for the reduction of the extensive experimentation in the design of carbon-epoxy repairs. Design principles were also established for these repairs under buckling.

Studying changes in brain activation according to the valence of emotion-inducing stimuli is essential in the research on emotions. Due to the ecological potential of virtual reality, it is also important to examine whether brain activation in response to emotional stimuli can be modulated by the three-dimensional (3D) properties of the images. This study uses functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to compare differences between 3D and standard (2D) visual stimuli in the activation of emotion-related brain areas. The stimuli were organized in three virtual-reality scenarios, each with a different emotional valence (pleasant, unpleasant and neutral). The scenarios were presented in a pseudo-randomized order in the two visualization modes to twelve healthy males. Data were analyzed through a GLM-based fixed effects procedure. Unpleasant and neutral stimuli activated the right amygdala more strongly when presented in 3D than in 2D. These results suggest that 3D stimuli, when used as “building blocks” for virtual environments, can induce increased emotional loading, as shown here through neuroimaging.

The container loading problem (CLP) is a combinatorial optimization problem for the spatial arrangement of cargo inside containers so as to maximize the usage of space. The algorithms for this problem are of limited practical applicability if real-world constraints are not considered, one of the most important of which is deemed to be stability. This paper addresses static stability, as opposed to dynamic stability, looking at the stability of the cargo during container loading. This paper proposes two algorithms. The first is a static stability algorithm based on static mechanical equilibrium conditions that can be used as a stability evaluation function embedded in CLP algorithms (e.g. constructive heuristics, metaheuristics). The second proposed algorithm is a physical packing sequence algorithm that, given a container loading arrangement, generates the actual sequence by which each box is placed inside the container, considering static stability and loading operation efficiency constraints.

The Container Loading Problem (CLP) literature has traditionally evaluated the dynamic stability of cargo by applying two metrics to box arrangements: the mean number of boxes supporting the items excluding those placed directly on the floor (M1) and the percentage of boxes with insufficient lateral support (M2). However, these metrics, that aim to be proxies for cargo stability during transportation, fail to translate real-world cargo conditions of dynamic stability. In this paper two new performance indicators are proposed to evaluate the dynamic stability of cargo arrangements: the number of fallen boxes (NFB) and the number of boxes within the Damage Boundary Curve fragility test (NB_DBC). Using 1500 solutions for well-known problem instances found in the literature, these new performance indicators are evaluated using a physics simulation tool (StableCargo), replacing the real-world transportation by a truck with a simulation of the dynamic behaviour of container loading arrangements. Two new dynamic stability metrics that can be integrated within any container loading algorithm are also proposed. The metrics are analytical models of the proposed stability performance indicators, computed by multiple linear regression. Pearson’s r correlation coefficient was used as an evaluation parameter for the performance of the models. The extensive computational results show that the proposed metrics are better proxies for dynamic stability in the CLP than the previous widely used metrics.
