The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between the satisfaction with HRM practices in an organization and the workers' perceived performance. We are interested in learning if indeed workers that are more satisfied with the organization’s practices will also perceive themselves as more hardworking than others, thus confirming the happy-productive worker hypothesis, from an individual perception standpoint. Data originates from a large Portuguese hospital, with a sample of 952 clinical and nonclinical hospital workers. Data was originally explored using SPSS software and later tested in AMOS software where a multiple regression model was constructed and tested. Results indicate that overall satisfaction with HRM practices are related with the workers’ perceived performance; most of the HRM satisfaction subscales also relate, except for pay and performance appraisal, that do not seem to be good predictors of the workers perceived performance. The present study is based on a single large public hospital, and thus, these findings need to be further tested in other settings. This study offers some clues regarding the areas of HRM that seem to be more related with the workers’ perceived performance, and hence provide an interesting framework for managers dealing with healthcare teams. This study contributes to the happy-productive worker hypothesis research, by including seldom used variables in the equation and taking a different perspective. Results provide new clues for investigation and practice regarding the areas of action in HRM that seem to be more prone to elicit perceived effort from the workers.

The clinical content of administrative databases includes, among others, patient demographic characteristics, and codes for diagnoses and procedures. The data in these databases is standardized, clearly defined, readily available, less expensive than collected by other means, and normally covers hospitalizations in entire geographic areas. Although with some limitations, this data is often used to evaluate the quality of healthcare. Under these circumstances, the quality of the data, for instance, errors, or it completeness, is of central importance and should never be ignored. Both the minimization of data quality problems and a deep knowledge about this data (e.g., how to select a patient group) are important for users in order to trust and to correctly interpret results. In this paper we present, discuss and give some recommendations for some problems found in these administrative databases. We also present a simple tool that can be used to screen the quality of data through the use of domain specific data quality indicators. These indicators can significantly contribute to better data, to give steps towards a continuous increase of data quality and, certainly, to better informed decision-making.

There has been a growing interest in research on performance measurement and management practices, which seems to reflect researchers’ response to calls for the need to increase the relevance of management accounting research. However, despite the development of the new public management literature, studies involving public sector organizations are relatively small compared to those involving business organizations and extremely limited when it comes to public primary health care organizations. Yet, the economic significance of public health care organizations in the economy of developed countries and the criticisms these organizations regularly face from the public suggests there is a need for research. This is particularly true in the case of research that may lead to improvement in performance measurement and management practices and ultimately to improvements in the way health care organizations use their limited resources in the provision of services to the communities. This study reports on a field study involving three public primary health care organisations. The evidence obtained from interviews and archival data suggests a performance management practices in these institutions lacked consistency and coherence, potentially leading to decreased performance. Hierarchical controls seemed to be very weak and accountability limited, leading to a lack of direction, low motivation and, in some circumstances to insufficient managerial abilities and skills. Also, the performance management systems revealed a number of weaknesses, which suggests that there are various opportunities for improvement in performance in the studied organisations.

Este estudo tem como objectivo descrever a Unidade de cuidados intensivos e intermédios respiratórios do Hospital Clínico em Barcelona de forma a caracterizá-la tanto ao nível de recursos materiais e humanos como em termos de protocolos usados. Esta unidade é considerada uma das melhores da Europa, dispondo da mais alta tecnologia, desenvolvendo protocolos baseados na evidência de forma a reduzir ao máximo a taxa de mortalidade neste local. O staff médico sempre em constante actualização, trabalhando muito no campo da investigação. Por outro lado, a fisioterapia integrante no Instituto Clínico do Tórax realiza menos investigação investindo mais no tratamento de doentes não intubados, tendo como técnicas de eleição posicionamento, mobilização, expiração forçada e hidratação oral. Em relação à VNI, muitos dos estudos referentes a este tema foram realizados pelo staff médico deste Hospital. O staff de fisioterapia é responsável pela adaptação da VNI nos pacientes hipercápnicos. Em conclusão, o número e tempo limitado de fisioterapeutas na unidade não contribuem para a aplicação de novas técnicas que requerem a intervenção de dois fisioterapeutas. O sector da saúde ocupa, actualmente, um espaço muito visível na nossa sociedade, quer seja em termos económicos como sociais. Os utentes têm alterado as suas atitudes, tendo vindo a preocupar-se e a exigir cada vez mais dos serviços de saúde. Estas mudanças têm conduzido as Organizações a desenvolver serviços mais orientados para o marketing. Desta forma, reconhece-se a importância dessa avaliação como forma de aumentar os níveis de satisfação dos utentes e da eficiência organizacional. A estratégia de Marketing, passa pela escolha dos mercados alvo, da sua posição competitiva face aos seus concorrentes, que permita atender os seus utentes. Neste contexto, o Marketing poderá desempenhar um papel preponderante na rentabilidade e competitividade das Organizações, pelo que se achou pertinente desenvolver as estratégias de Marketing numa Instituição Privada de Saúde. Assim, no âmbito do 2º. Ano de Mestrado de Gestão das Organizações, ramo Unidades de Saúde, foi realizado um estágio na área do Marketing e Imagem, que teve lugar no Hospital de Santa Maria – Porto. Assim, com este relatório pretende-se reflectir sobre as actividades desenvolvidas, desde a conceptualização à realização das mesmas, e o seu impacto na Organização e, simultaneamente, disponibilizar um instrumento de avaliação da Unidade Curricular.

Introdução: No Centro Hospitalar de São João, EPE a partir de 2008, foi implementado o sistema semi-automático de reposição de stocks nivelados de medicamentos, Pyxis®, atualmente implementado em 16 serviços clínicos. Atendendo ao crescimento verificado na implementação deste sistema automatizado na instituição, este trabalho pretende dar a conhecer a realidade de preparação da medicação para reposição no sistema semi-automático Pyxis®, por avaliação do número de unidades de medicamentos repostos diariamente e por dia da semana. Material e Métodos: Desenvolveu-se um estudo longitudinal retrospetivo onde se analisou a totalidade de serviços com implementação Pyxis® através do registo diário de reposição dos diferentes Serviços Clínicos num período de 41 dias consecutivos. Numa segunda fase, os dados foram sintetizados sob a forma de tabelas em Microsoft Office Excel®, tendo posteriormente sido construídos os respetivos gráficos para análise. Resultados: Os resultados, representados graficamente, mostram que a segunda-feira é o dia da semana com maior número de reposições de medicamentos, sendo os serviços com maior número de reposições totais UCI Geral, UCI Neurocríticos, Cirurgia Cardiotorácica e UCIPU. Discussão / Conclusões: Os resultados obtidos permitiram verificar uma sobrecarga de referências de medicamentos e unidades repostas às segundas-feiras, atingindo, em muitos serviços, valores de unidades repostas duas vezes superior à média de reposições do serviço (por ex. UCI Neurocíticos). Contudo, apesar do reduzido período de análise, os dados parecem evidenciar que o facto de haver reposições ao domingo agiliza o processo de reposição dos Pyxis® às segundas-feiras.

Neste artigo, pretende-se analisar a performance como um gênero artístico que exige uma reflexão em torno do ritual e das transposições dos atos cotidianos para o campo da arte, mas principalmente como uma manifestação que implica a inevitável consideração de que é um recurso cênico não mais calcado na palavra, funcionando como fator determinante para o teatro pós-modernista, que faz constante recusa ao texto em prol do chamado teatro pós-dramático.

Understanding the performance of banks is of the utmost relevance, because of the impact of this sector on economic growth and financial stability. Of all the different assets that make up a bank portfolio, the residential mortgage loans constitute one of its main. Using the dynamic panel data method, we analyse the influence of residential mortgage loans on bank profitability and risk, using a sample of 555 banks in the European Union (EU-15), over the period from 1995 to 2008. We find that banks with larger weights of residential mortgage loans show lower credit risk in good times. This result explains why banks rush to lend on property during booms due to the positive effects it has on credit risk. The results show further that credit risk and profitability are lower during the upturn in the residential property price cycle. The results also reveal the existence of a non-linear relationship (U-shaped marginal effect), as a function of bank’s risk, between profitability and the residential mortgage loans exposure. For those banks that have high credit risk, a large exposure of residential mortgage loans is associated with higher risk-adjusted profitability, through lower risk. For banks with a moderate/low credit risk, the effects of higher residential mortgage loan exposure on its risk-adjusted profitability are also positive or marginally positive.

We examine satisfaction with HRM practices, namely recruitment, training and rewarding in NPO’s and attitudes regarding the appropriateness of these practices. The participants in this study are 76 volunteers, affiliated to 4 different NPO’s, which work in hospitals and have direct contact with patients and their families. Analysing aggregate results we show that volunteers are more satisfied with training, and consider that the training strategies are very appropriate. After identifying differences between organisations we discover that in some organizations volunteers are satisfied with rewards, but in opposition they have negative attitudes regarding the appropriateness of the recognition strategies and vice-versa an opposite relation between satisfaction with reward and recognition strategies and the process of reward and recognition. We also name the more and less satisfied volunteers.

The purpose of this paper is to identify the different types of motivations in hospital volunteers. We present a literature review about different types of motivation and we collect data from hospital volunteers through a questionnaire. Four different motivation categories are identified: development and learning, altruism, career recognition and belonging and protection. The main motivations expressed are development and learning, followed by altruism. Belonging and protection, followed by career recognition are the least cited motivations. Career recognition is negatively correlated with age, and belonging/ protection is negatively correlated with education. That is, younger volunteers present more career recognition motives and less educated volunteers have more from protection and belonging. This study encompasses hospital volunteers and their motivations. The paper is useful to policy makers aiming to develop targeted approaches to attracting and retaining volunteers.
