A tighter analysis of the worst-case endto- end communication delay in massive multicores

"Many-core” systems based on the Network-on- Chip (NoC) architecture have brought into the fore-front various opportunities and challenges for the deployment of real-time systems. Such real-time systems need timing guarantees to be fulfilled. Therefore, calculating upper-bounds on the end-to-end communication delay between system components is of primary interest. In this work, we identify the limitations of an existing approach proposed by [1] and propose different techniques to overcome these limitations.

Da (in)diferença à intervenção: o contributo da educação intercultural na Educação Especial

Na sociedade contemporânea, a educação tornou-se um desafio porque a escola e a sociedade vivem numa constante dicotomia à qual os especialistas chamam de "daltonismo cultural" contrapondo ao "apelo" (in)consciente dos alunos que reflectem o "arco-íris" da diversidade da nossa heterogénea sociedade. Reconhecemos que a sociedade delega na escola o papel primordial da educação e que esta reflecte o desenvolvimento da sociedade que apela a uma educação intercultural e inclusiva, para que todos os alunos, independentemente das suas necessidades e especificidades, tenham direito a uma educação efectiva e valorativa. Assim sendo, esta irá procurar compreender os caminhos do "Movimento Escola Inclusiva" e da interculturalidade, passando pela compreensão destes fenómenos que se inter-relacionam e complementam. Para além de uma visão global desta temática, iremos incidir a nossa atenção no âmbito da Educação Pré-escolar. A escolha deste nível educativo teve em consideração a realização de um estudo de caso acerca do trabalho transdisciplinar entre docente (educador de infância) e terapeutas (ocupacional e da fala) para a inclusão de uma criança, de cinco anos de idade, com características do espectro do autismo numa sala do Pré-escolar no Grande Porto, Portugal.

Highly scalable aggregate computations in cyber-physical systems: physical environment meets communication protocols

In this paper, we focus on large-scale and dense Cyber- Physical Systems, and discuss methods that tightly integrate communication and computing with the underlying physical environment. We present Physical Dynamic Priority Dominance ((PD)2) protocol that exemplifies a key mechanism to devise low time-complexity communication protocols for large-scale networked sensor systems. We show that using this mechanism, one can compute aggregate quantities such as the maximum or minimum of sensor readings in a time-complexity that is equivalent to essentially one message exchange. We also illustrate the use of this mechanism in a more complex task of computing the interpolation of smooth as well as non-smooth sensor data in very low timecomplexity.

IEEE 802.15.4: a Federating Communication Protocol for Time-Sensitive Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been attracting increasing interests for developing a new generation of embedded systems with great potential for many applications such as surveillance, environment monitoring, emergency medical response and home automation. However, the communication paradigms in WSNs differ from the ones attributed to traditional wireless networks, triggering the need for new communication protocols. In this context, the recently standardised IEEE 802.15.4 protocol presents some potentially interesting features for deployment in wireless sensor network applications, such as power-efficiency, timeliness guarantees and scalability. Nevertheless, when addressing WSN applications with (soft/hard) timing requirements some inherent paradoxes emerge, such as power-efficiency versus timeliness, triggering the need of engineering solutions for an efficient deployment of IEEE 802.15.4 in WSNs. In this technical report, we will explore the most relevant characteristics of the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol for wireless sensor networks and present the most important challenges regarding time-sensitive WSN applications. We also provide some timing performance and analysis of the IEEE 802.15.4 that unveil some directions for resolving the previously mentioned paradoxes.

LSP communication in a digital age: the outcomes of teaching and learning in tertiary education

This paper discusses the changes brought by the communication revolution in teaching and learning in the scope of LSP. Its aim is to provide an insight on how teaching which was bi-dimensional, turned into a multidimensional system, gathering other complementary resources that have transformed, in a incredibly short time, the ways we receive share and store information, for instance as professionals, and keep in touch with our peers. The increasing rise of electronic publications, the incredible boom of social and professional networks, search engines, blogs, list servs, forums, e-mail blasts, Facebook pages, YouTube contents, Tweets and Apps, have twisted the way information is conveyed. Classes ceased to be predictable and have been empowered by digital platforms, innumerous and different data repositories (TILDE, IATE, LINGUEE, and so many other terminological data banks) that have definitely transformed the academic world in general and tertiary education in particular. There is a bulk of information to be digested by students, who are no longer passive but instead responsible and active for their academic outcomes. The question is whether they possess the tools to select only what is accurate and important for a certain subject or assignment, due to that overflow? Due to the reduction of the number of course years in most degrees, after the implementation of Bologna and the shrinking of the curricula contents, have students the possibility of developing critical thinking? Both teaching and learning rely on digital resources to improve the speed of the spreading of knowledge. But have those changes been effective to promote really communication? Furthermore, with the increasing Apps that have already been developed and will continue to appear for learning foreign languages, for translation among others, will the students feel the need of learning them once they have those Apps. These are some the questions we would like to discuss in our paper.

A adaptação intercultural da família: um estudo exploratório com expatriados portugueses

A internacionalização por parte do tecido empresarial português é uma realidade cada vez mais presente que tem colocado grandes desafios à gestão internacional de recursos humanos. Sendo as pessoas o fator crítico de sucesso é importante saber como direcionar os esforços para uma gestão eficiente e eficaz dos recursos humanos disponíveis. Desta forma, o objetivo do presente estudo passa por uma exploração da perceção dos expatriados sobre o ajustamento intercultural das famílias durante a missão internacional – Expatriação. De forma a dar resposta a esta questão, para além da revisão da literatura realizada inicialmente, foi utilizada uma metodologia qualitativa com recurso ao estudo de caso múltiplo. Para a operacionalização do processo, o instrumento de recolha de informação privilegiado foi a entrevista semiestruturada, tendo sido realizadas no total 11 entrevistas a expatriados e repatriados que foram acompanhados da família durante a sua expatriação. Os resultados sugerem que o ajustamento intercultural das famílias ao país de destino influencia o expatriado ao nível do ajustamento intercultural, do desempenho organizacional e da vontade de concretizar a missão internacional até ao final. É possível também constatar que os expatriados atribuem extrema importância ao papel de suporte e apoio que a família assume. No final da dissertação são discutidos os resultados obtidos e apresentadas as limitações, pistas para futuros estudos e conclusões do estudo aqui desenvolvido.

Server to Mobile Device Communication: A Case Study

Develop a client-server application for a mobile environment can bring many challenges because of the mobile devices limitations. So, in this paper is discussed what can be the more reliable way to exchange information between a server and an Android mobile application, since it is important for users to have an application that really works in a responsive way and preferably without any errors. In this discussion two data transfer protocols (Socket and HTTP) and three serialization data formats (XML, JSON and Protocol Buffers) were tested using some metrics to evaluate which is the most practical and fast to use.

Smart Grid Communication Technologies in the Brazilian Electrical Sector

Intelligent electrical grids can be considered as the next generation of electrical energy transportation. The enormous potential leads to worldwide focus of research on the technology of smart grids. This paper aims to present a review of the Brazilian electricity sector in context with the integration of communication technologies for smart grids. The work gives an overview of the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy in the Brazil and a brief summary of the current electricity market. Smart grid technologies are introduced and the requirements for the Brazilian power system are pointed out. Various technologies for communication within an intelligent network are presented and their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages are compared to the Brazilian conditions. In addition, a summary is given of current pilot projects for Smart Grid technologies within Brazil, as well as a presentation of individual selected projects.

A Communication and Resources Management Scheme to Support the Smart Grid Integration of Multiplayers Access to Resources Information

The increasing and intensive integration of distributed energy resources into distribution systems requires adequate methodologies to ensure a secure operation according to the smart grid paradigm. In this context, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are an essential infrastructure. This paper presents a conceptual design of a communication and resources management scheme based on an intelligent SCADA with a decentralized, flexible, and intelligent approach, adaptive to the context (context awareness). The methodology is used to support the energy resource management considering all the involved costs, power flows, and electricity prices leading to the network reconfiguration. The methodology also addresses the definition of the information access permissions of each player to each resource. The paper includes a 33-bus network used in a case study that considers an intensive use of distributed energy resources in five distinct implemented operation contexts.

AUV Control and Communication using Underwater Acoustic Networks

Underwater acoustic networks can be quite effective to establish communication links between autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and other vehicles or control units, enabling complex vehicle applications and control scenarios. A communications and control framework to support the use of underwater acoustic networks and sample application scenarios are described for single and multi-AUV operation.

Por una (hiper)pedagogía crítica, intercultural y multisensorial en el aprendizaje de Español como Lengua Extranjera (ELE)

Teniendo en cuenta una pedagogía crítica emancipadora (Jiménez Raya, Lamb & Vieira, 2007) enriquecida por enfoques multisensoriales (Arslan, 2009), se pretende en este artículo dar cuenta de prácticas verdaderamente interdisciplinarias y basadas en una filosofía de proyecto en el que alumnos de ELE en la Educación Básica (primer y tercer ciclos) llevan a cabo tareas de naturaleza plurilingüe y multicultural.En este estudio, hemos tratado de destacar las prácticas y estrategias emancipatorias que traducen aprendizajes que resultan significativos en un nivel multicultural y plurilingüe para los alumnos (Andrade & Araújo e Sá, 2003), contribuyendo al desarrollo de su conciencia crítica cultural (Byram et al, 2002). Buscando evidenciar una muestra de prácticas interdisciplinarias y multisensoriales (Arslan, 2009), relacionadas con el proyecto Pluri+Red y basadas en el uso de estrategias y materiales físicos o digitales (juegos didácticos, WebQuests, cuentos interactivos, etc.) que plantean retos a los estudiantes con el fin de provocar asombro y extrañeza, pero también cuestionamiento (Jiménez Raya, Lamb & Vieira, 2007), pretendemos que este estudio exploratorio demuestre las opciones y rutas tomadas hacia un único objetivo: formar a los futuros ciudadanos conscientes del mundo, capaces de intervenir y de formarse a lo largo de su vida.

De hello ao hallo – uma abordagem intercultural e plurilingual no ensino precoce de línguas estrangeiras

Neste artigo apresentaremos uma breve perspectiva de um projecto de investigação que se centrou na competênciadeintercompreensã o, que, por sua vez, se encontra associada às competências de comunicação intercultural e plurilingual. A nossa intenção foi despertar nos nossos aprendentes a curiosidade para com outras línguas e culturas para além da portuguesa e inglesa. Escolhemos, assim, o Alemão e o Neerlandês, por pertencerem, tal como o Inglês, à mesma família linguística e, principalmente, por apresentarem enquanto línguas bastantes semelhanças. Quisemos sensibilizar os nossos aprendentes para as línguas germânicas, de forma a terem a oportunidade de alargarem os seus horizontes linguísticos e culturais. Para tal elaborámos várias estratégias e materiais sempre com o objectivo de os manter motivados e interessados em conhecer o desconhecido. Nesta breve reflexão, apresentaremos as competências fulcrais do nosso projecto, isto é, a competência de intercompreensão, a competência de comunicação intercultural e a competência plurilingues, assim como também as estratégias e os materiais usados em quatro aulas de sensibilização às três línguas germânicas.
