Existing gamification services have features that preclude their use by e-learning tools. Odin is a gamification service that mimics the API of state-of-the-art services without these limitations. This paper describes Odin, its role in an e-learning system architecture requiring gamification, and details its implementation. The validation of Odin involved the creation of a small e-learning game, integrated in a Learning Management System (LMS) using the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) specification.

A gold nanoparticle-coated screen-printed carbon electrode was used as the transducer in the development of an electrochemical immunosensor for Ara h 1 (a major peanut allergen) detection in food samples. Gold nanoparticles (average diameter=32 nm) were electrochemically generated on the surface of screen-printed carbon electrodes. Two monoclonal antibodies were used in a sandwich-type immunoassay and the antibody–antigen interaction was electrochemically detected through stripping analysis of enzymatically (using alkaline phosphatase) deposited silver. The total time of the optimized immunoassay was 3 h 50 min. The developed immunosensor allowed the quantification of Ara h 1 between 12.6 and 2000 ng/ml, with a limit of detection of 3.8 ng/ml, and provided precise (RSD <8.7%) and accurate (recovery >96.6%) results. The immunosensor was successfully applied to the analysis of complex food matrices (cookies and chocolate), being able to detect Ara h 1 in samples containing 0.1% of peanut.

Consumers nowadays are playing an active role in their health-care. A special case is the increasing number of women, who are reluctant to use exogenous hormone therapy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms and are looking for complementary therapies. However, food supplements are not clearly regulated in Europe. The EFSA has only recently begun to address the issues of botanical safety and purity regulation, leading to a variability of content, standardization, dosage, and purity of available products. In this study, isoflavones (puerarin, daidzin, genistin, daidzein, glycitein, genistein, formononetin, prunetin, and biochanin A) from food supplements (n = 15) for menopausal symptoms relief are evaluated and compared with the labelled information. Only four supplements complied with the recommendations made by the EC on the tolerable thresholds. The intestinal bioavailability of these compounds was investigated using Caco-2 cells. The apparent permeability coefficients of the selected isoflavonoids across the Caco-2 cells were affected by the isoflavone concentration and product matrix.

A novel electrochemical sensor for ochratoxin A (OTA) detection was fabricated through the modification of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The MWCNTs dramatically promoted the sensitivity of the developed sensor, while polypyrrole (PPy) imprinted with OTA served as the selective recognition element. The imprinted PPy film was prepared by electropolymerization of pyrrole in the presence of OTA as a template molecule via cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrochemical oxidation of OTA at the developed sensor was investigated by CV and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The developed MIP/MWCNT/GCE sensor showed a linear relationship, when using DPV, between peak current intensity and OTA concentration in the range between 0.050 and 1.0 μM, with limits of detection (LOD) and quantification of 0.0041 μM (1.7 μg/L) and 0.014 μM (5.7 μg/L) respectively. With the developed sensor precise results were obtained; relative standard deviations of 4.2% and 7.5% in the evaluation of the repeatability and reproducibility, respectively. The MIP/MWCNT/GCE sensor is simple to fabricate and easy to use and was successfully applied to the determination of OTA in spiked beer and wine samples, with recoveries between 84 and 104%, without the need of a sample pre-treatment step.

Background Over the years, food industry wastes have been the focus of a growing interest due to their content in high added-value compounds. A good example are the olive oil by-products (OOBP), which retain a great amount of phenolic compounds during olive oil production. Their structure and biological properties justify their potential use as antioxidants in other food products. The efficient recovery of phenolic compounds has been extensively studied and optimized in order to maximize their reintroduction in the food chain and contribute to a higher valorization and better management of wastes from olive oil industry. Scope and approach This paper reviews the most representative phenolic compounds described in OOBP and their biological properties. New extraction procedures to efficiently recover these compounds and the most advanced chromatographic techniques that have been used for a better understanding of the phenolic profile of these complex matrices are also referred. Finally, this paper reports the main applications of OOBP, with emphasis on their phenolic content as natural antioxidants for food applications. Key findings and conclusions Besides their antioxidant activity, phenolic compounds from OOBP have also shown antimicrobial and antitumoral properties. Their application as food antioxidants requires new extraction techniques, including the use of non-toxic solvents and, in a pilot scale, the use of filters and adsorbent resins. The inclusion of phenolic compounds from OOBP in some food matrices have improved not only their antioxidant capacity but also their sensory attributes.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a paradigm over the last few years as a result of the tight integration of the computing and the physical world. The requirement of remote sensing makes low-power wireless sensor networks one of the key enabling technologies of IoT. These networks encompass several challenges, especially in communication and networking, due to their inherent constraints of low-power features, deployment in harsh and lossy environments, and limited computing and storage resources. The IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) [1] was proposed by the IETF ROLL (Routing Over Low-power Lossy links) working group and is currently adopted as an IETF standard in the RFC 6550 since March 2012. Although RPL greatly satisfied the requirements of low-power and lossy sensor networks, several issues remain open for improvement and specification, in particular with respect to Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees and support for mobility. In this paper, we focus mainly on the RPL routing protocol. We propose some enhancements to the standard specification in order to provide QoS guarantees for static as well as mobile LLNs. For this purpose, we propose OF-FL (Objective Function based on Fuzzy Logic), a new objective function that overcomes the limitations of the standardized objective functions that were designed for RPL by considering important link and node metrics, namely end-to-end delay, number of hops, ETX (Expected transmission count) and LQL (Link Quality Level). In addition, we present the design of Co-RPL, an extension to RPL based on the corona mechanism that supports mobility in order to overcome the problem of slow reactivity to frequent topology changes and thus providing a better quality of service mainly in dynamic networks application. Performance evaluation results show that both OF-FL and Co-RPL allow a great improvement when compared to the standard specification, mainly in terms of packet loss ratio and average network latency. 2015 Elsevier B.V. Um Sistema de Informação consiste num sistema capaz de armazenar, organizar e estruturar dados para ajudar a responder às necessidades das empresas, passando também pela capacidade de resposta às questões diárias das empresas. Assim, um Sistema de Informação pode ser definido como o software que ajuda a organizar e analisar dados, tendo como objetivo fornecer informação útil na altura certa para que possa ser utilizada para a tomada de decisões ou para uma gestão mais eficiente dos diversos fluxos que uma empresa pode conter. Neste sentido, o projeto apresentado centra-se no desenho e construção de um Sistema de Informação capaz de gerir o negócio de uma empresa do setor alimentar, mais propriamente do setor da transformação de carnes. Foi desenvolvido em Oracle ADF, de forma a aproveitar as vantagens inerentes à tecnologia e ao desenvolvimento web. Sendo uma tecnologia relativamente nova no mercado e dominada por poucos, a sua utilização neste momento pode tornar-se uma grande vantagem. Para o desenvolvimento da aplicação foi realizado o levantamento e análise de requisitos, foi criada a base de dados capaz de suportar o funcionamento do software e desenvolvido um sistema de login, capaz de gerir as sessões de cada utilizador. Foi implementado um processo de introdução e edição de informação, nomeadamente o registo de entradas, transformações e saídas. Contemplou-se também uma secção com dados mestre da empresa com a possibilidade de inserção, atualização e/ou remoção. Além disso, foram incorporadas validações em todos os processos que são usados pelos utilizadores, de modo a evitar a existência de dados incoerentes ou duplicados. Relativamente à lógica de negócio, foi embutida na aplicação de forma a permitir consultar a informação de forma clara, rápida e em diversos lugares, reduzindo tempo e tarefas ao colaborador/utilizador, visto que os processos foram automatizados. Com a implementação deste Sistema de Informação, a empresa pode usufruir de um sistema integrado capaz de gerir e controlar todo o seu processo produtivo, reduzindo custos e desperdícios, aumentando a produtividade e eficiência.

Num contexto global de incerteza, as cadeias de abastecimento mais ágeis e os clientes com mais exigências manifestam uma constante preocupação com a melhoria contínua da eficiência das operações logísticas. O presente projeto foi desenvolvido na empresa Sonae Modelo Continente Hipermercados, S.A, uma das duas principais empresas do retalho da grande distribuição alimentar em Portugal. Sendo a logística um fator chave de sucesso, uma das atividades críticas de uma empresa, é identificada a oportunidade de melhoria operacional do processo de negócio, a partir das reclamações dos clientes internos. O tratamento destas reclamações, incidências, é de grande complexidade e responsabilidade para a área do Logistics Customer Service. O projeto desenvolvido, a ‘Reengenharia do processo de reclamações das Lojas’, surgiu da necessidade de criar um modelo e processo de negócio de melhoria contínua, que solucione falhas operacionais com implicação na Logística, Supply Chain e em outras áreas da empresa. A procura dessa melhoria é o objetivo deste trabalho. Pretende-se, com a proposta aqui apresentada, a interligação e automatização da cadeia abastecimento, para superar as ocorrências operacionais, elevar a qualidade do serviço, aumentar a capacidade do processo e incorporar uma monitorização das atividades de input (Lojas) e output (Entrepostos), para futura rastreabilidade das operações, através da integração da cadeia de abastecimento, para a satisfação do cliente interno. Para a elaboração do novo modelo de processo foi seguida a orientação da reengenharia de processos de negócio, nas suas linhas orientadoras: identificação do modelo de processo atual e das suas necessidades; definição dos objetivos norteadores do projeto a apresentar; redesenhar novo modelo de processo de negócio, de modo a dar resposta às necessidades detetadas nos clientes internos.
