Although the adverse health consequences of ingestion of food contaminated with aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) are known, relatively few studies are available on the adverse effects of exposure in occupational settings. Taking this into consideration, our study was developed aiming to elucidate the possible effects of occupational exposure to AFB1 in Portuguese swine production facilities using a specific biomarker to assess exposure to AFB1. In total, 28 workers participated in this study, providing blood samples, and a control group (n  = 30) was composed of subjects without any type of agricultural activity. Fungal contamination was also studied by conventional methods through air, surfaces, and new and used floor coverage. Twenty-one workers (75%) showed detectable levels of AFB1 with values ranging from <1 ng/ml to 8.94 ng/ml and with a mean value of 1.91 ± 1.68 ng/ml. In the control group, the AFB1 values were all below 1 ng/ml. Twelve different Aspergillus species were identified. Aspergillus versicolor presented the highest airborne spore counts (3210 CFU/m3) and was also detected in higher values in surfaces (>300 CFU/cm2). Data indicate that exposure to AFB1 occurs in swine barns, and this site serves as a contamination source in an occupational setting.

Clinical and environmental samples from Portugal were screened for the presence of Aspergillus and the distributions of the species complexes were determined in order to understand how their distributions differ based on their source. Fifty-seven Aspergillus isolates from clinical samples were collected from 10 health institutions. Six species complexes were detected by internal transcribed spacer sequencing; Fumigati, Flavi, and Nigri were found most frequently (50.9%, 21.0%, and 15.8%, respectively). β-tubulin and calmodulin sequencing resulted in seven cryptic species (A. awamorii, A. brasiliensis, A. fructus, A. lentulus, A. sydowii, A. tubingensis, Emericella echinulata) being identified among the 57 isolates. Thirty-nine isolates of Aspergillus were recovered from beach sand and poultry farms, 31 from swine farms, and 80 from hospital environments, for a total 189 isolates. Eleven species complexes were found in these 189 isolates, and those belonging to the Versicolores species complex were found most frequently (23.8%). There was a significant association between the different environmental sources and distribution of the species complexes; the hospital environment had greater variability of species complexes than other environmental locations. A high prevalence of cryptic species within the Circumdati complex was detected in several environments; from the isolates analyzed, at least four cryptic species were identified, most of them growing at 37ºC. Because Aspergillus species complexes have different susceptibilities to antifungals, knowing the species-complex epidemiology for each setting, as well as the identification of cryptic species among the collected clinical isolates, is important. This may allow preventive and corrective measures to be taken, which may result in decreased exposure to those organisms and a better prognosis.

BACKGROUNDWhile the pharmaceutical industry keeps an eye on plasmid DNA production for new generation gene therapies, real-time monitoring techniques for plasmid bioproduction are as yet unavailable. This work shows the possibility of in situ monitoring of plasmid production in Escherichia coli cultures using a near infrared (NIR) fiber optic probe. RESULTSPartial least squares (PLS) regression models based on the NIR spectra were developed for predicting bioprocess critical variables such as the concentrations of biomass, plasmid, carbon sources (glucose and glycerol) and acetate. In order to achieve robust models able to predict the performance of plasmid production processes, independently of the composition of the cultivation medium, cultivation strategy (batch versus fed-batch) and E. coli strain used, three strategies were adopted, using: (i) E. coliDH5 cultures conducted under different media compositions and culture strategies (batch and fed-batch); (ii) engineered E. coli strains, MG1655endArecApgi and MG1655endArecA, grown on the same medium and culture strategy; (iii) diverse E. coli strains, over batch and fed-batch cultivations and using different media compositions. PLS models showed high accuracy for predicting all variables in the three groups of cultures. CONCLUSIONNIR spectroscopy combined with PLS modeling provides a fast, inexpensive and contamination-free technique to accurately monitoring plasmid bioprocesses in real time, independently of the medium composition, cultivation strategy and the E. coli strain used.

This study explores a large set of OC and EC measurements in PM(10) and PM(2.5) aerosol samples, undertaken with a long term constant analytical methodology, to evaluate the capability of the OC/EC minimum ratio to represent the ratio between the OC and EC aerosol components resulting from fossil fuel combustion (OC(ff)/EC(ff)). The data set covers a wide geographical area in Europe, but with a particular focus upon Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom, and includes a great variety of sites: urban (background, kerbside and tunnel), industrial, rural and remote. The highest minimum ratios were found in samples from remote and rural sites. Urban background sites have shown spatially and temporally consistent minimum ratios, of around 1.0 for PM(10) and 0.7 for PM(2.5).The consistency of results has suggested that the method could be used as a tool to derive the ratio between OC and EC from fossil fuel combustion and consequently to differentiate OC from primary and secondary sources. To explore this capability, OC and EC measurements were performed in a busy roadway tunnel in central Lisbon. The OC/EC ratio, which reflected the composition of vehicle combustion emissions, was in the range of 03-0.4. Ratios of OC/EC in roadside increment air (roadside minus urban background) in Birmingham, UK also lie within the range 03-0.4. Additional measurements were performed under heavy traffic conditions at two double kerbside sites located in the centre of Lisbon and Madrid. The OC/EC minimum ratios observed at both sites were found to be between those of the tunnel and those of urban background air, suggesting that minimum values commonly obtained for this parameter in open urban atmospheres over-predict the direct emissions of OC(ff) from road transport. The public sector is facing turbulent times and this also challenges the health professions who are expected to serve both the interests of the citizens and the cost-containment and austerity policies of governments. This article seeks to explore the changing role of the health professions. I introduce an approach on ‘citizen professionals’ as active players in the policy process and mediators between the state/policymakers and the citizens/patients. The aim is to highlight a transformative potential of professionalism and the connectedness with other sets of governance, like management. Empirical material from a German case study and a comparative European study serve to illustrate the arguments, drawing on policy analysis and secondary sources. The results bring the complexity of transformations and new emergent forms of professionalism into view that cannot be understood in traditional categories of conflict, exclusion and jurisdiction. Exploring the potential of the health professions to creatively respond to new challenges may reveal new opportunities for innovating healthcare policy beyond market and management.

Partindo de uma hipótese que se veio a demonstrar válida, de que os Operadores Turísticos em Portugal têm muito pouca informação sobre a consulta do viajante e o seu papel em responsabilidade na promoção da saúde dos seus clientes, apresenta-se neste trabalho não só uma análise da situação anteriormente referida como uma estratégia de comunicação visando consciencializar os Operadores Turísticos para a necessidade de fomentarem a adesão dos seus clientes à consulta do viajante. Dois temas emergem como centrais, nomeadamente a questão do turismo na nossa contemporaneidade e a saúde dos que viajem essencialmente para fora da Europa em turismo. Transversal a todo o trabalho encontra-se a noção de comunicação e saúde, especialmente na sua vertente de comunicação para a saúde. Defende-se que a comunicação para a saúde pode ser pensada como um fator competitivo para os Operadores Turísticos e apresenta-se uma estratégia de comunicação subordinada ao título: “Projeto de Consciencialização dos Operadores para a Consulta do Viajante”. Na primeira parte apresenta-se uma revisão da literatura e de outras fontes sobre os temas: Turismo, Consulta do Viajante e Comunicação para a Saúde, e na segunda parte o projeto que já referi. Partindo da hipótese inicialmente formulada, para uma análise completa da situação utilizaram-se metodologias de análise qualitativa e quantitativa junto dos principais públicos envolvidos a saber os Operadores Turísticos.

Lisboa, cidade cenográfica é uma instalação que resulta dum processo de sucessivos registos de momentos, experiências e vivências da cidade de Lisboa, com diferentes narrativas. Através do método de assemblage de elementos retirados à rua e reconstruindo composições de blocos volumétricas que incluem desde imagens gráficas, à presença de fontes de luz e de som, e texturas várias, produzi uma instalação destinada a ser ocupada, como se do próprio processo de deambulação por uma cidade se tratasse – neste caso Lisboa. A instalação final, – Lisboa, cidade cenográfica -, constitui em si uma maqueta, como ponto de partida para um outro processo, quase interminável, que conduzisse a uma outra instalação que nos engolisse e se apoderasse da nossa presença. Manipulando diferentes escalas, composições e morfologias de espaço obter-se-ia uma instalação quase infindável, como a própria cidade. A actual instalação é como a síntese dum Fóssil Urbano. Na observação e captação de imagens da cidade houve a preocupação de efectuar a diferentes horas do dia. Os sons utilizados na instalação, foram gravados nas ruas de Lisboa e incluem desde sinos de igreja, ao chilrear de pássaros, aos aviões que sobrevoam, ao trânsito e respectivas buzinas e sirenes de ambulâncias, entre outros. No âmbito do desenvolvimento do projecto e desta Memória Descritiva, tive a preocupação de pedir a algumas pessoas – Cartas de Lisboa -, testemunhando o modo como habitam ou habitaram a cidade. Nos headphones presentes na instalação, ouve-se o poema Lisbon Revisited (1923), de Álvaro de Campos, completando assim o som ambiente de Lisboa, cidade cenográfica. Aquele poema só audível daquele modo, acaba por se sobrepor assim, dum modo subtil, aos outros sons ambiente (exteriores aos headphones).
