A new integrated mathematical model for the simulation of offshore wind energy conversion system performance is presented in this paper. The mathematical model considers an offshore variable-speed turbine in deep water equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous generator using full-power two-level converter, converting the energy of a variable frequency source in injected energy into the electric network with constant frequency, through a high voltage DC transmission submarine cable. The mathematical model for the drive train is a concentrate two mass model which incorporates the dynamic for the structure and tower due to the need to emulate the effects of the moving surface. Controller strategy considered is a proportional integral one. Also, pulse width modulation using space vector modulation supplemented with sliding mode is used for trigger the transistor of the converter. Finally, a case study is presented to access the system performance. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper is on a simulation for offshore wind systems in deep water under cloud scope. The system is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous generator and a full-power three-level converter, converting the electric energy at variable frequency in one at constant frequency. The control strategies for the three-level are based on proportional integral controllers. The electric energy is injected through a HVDC transmission submarine cable into the grid. The drive train is modeled by a three-mass model taking into account the resistant stiffness torque, structure and tower in the deep water due to the moving surface elevation. Conclusions are taken on the influence of the moving surface on the energy conversion. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2015.

Nesta dissertação descreve-se uma metodologia de dimensionamento do sistema de tracção para equipar um veículo eléctrico ecológico (VEECO) com inclusão de um sistema de travagem regenerativa. Apresenta-se uma perspectiva geral de diversas topologias de sistemas de tracção utilizadas nos veículos eléctricos e realiza-se a sua comparação através do estudo e análise dos acionamentos electromecânicos que podem ser utilizados nesses sistemas de tracção eléctrica. Utilizando ferramentas de simulação numérica, estuda-se o modelo matemático de um veículo eléctrico com travagem regenerativa. A partir deste modelo matemático é adoptado uma possível configuração para o seu sistema de tracção eléctrica e são obtidas características teóricas de desempenho do veículo eléctrico, através da análise de testes padrão ao veículo. Em banco de ensaios, constrói-se um sistema de tracção eléctrica que permite a validação experimental do modelo matemático do veículo eléctrico. Para a construção deste banco de ensaios foram concebidos os sistemas de tracção eléctrica, de carga mecânica e de controlo e monitorização do banco de ensaios. A validação experimental realiza-se através dos mesmos testes padrão ao veículo eléctrico, como o teste NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), o teste de aceleração entre 0 e 100km/h e o teste de gradeabilidade. Desenvolve-se o dimensionamento do sistema de tracção eléctrica a equipar o VEECO, através da componente de modelação paramétrica do modelo matemático do veículo eléctrico. Com esta metodologia é adoptado um conjunto de variáveis paramétricas relacionadas com os elementos que constituem o sistema de tracção eléctrica do VEECO. Estuda-se a influência destas variáveis paramétricas nas características de desempenho pretendidas para o VEECO. Como resultado da análise de modelação paramétrica é apresentada uma solução para o sistema de tracção eléctrica do VEECO que cumpre a execução do NEDC, apresenta um tempo de aceleração entre 0 e 100km/h inferior a 10 segundos, supera uma gradeabilidade de 10% e uma autonomia de 200 km. O sistema de tracção do VEECO também permite realizar a travagem regenerativa com rendimento até 33%. Possui controlo de tracção e anti bloqueio da roda motora, através de uma unidade de controlo que permite reduzir a potência transmitida ao veio, quando a velocidade da roda de tracção difere do valor de referência da velocidade do veículo. Os conhecimentos adquiridos através do processo de investigação e desenvolvimento, para a realização da presente dissertação permitem apresentar perspectivas de desenvolvimento futuro com aplicação nos sistemas de tracção de veículos eléctricos rodoviários.

Power converters play a vital role in the integration of wind power into the electrical grid. Variable-speed wind turbine generator systems have a considerable interest of application for grid connection at constant frequency. In this paper, comprehensive simulation studies are carried out with three power converter topologies: matrix, two-level and multilevel. A fractional-order control strategy is studied for the variable-speed operation of wind turbine generator systems. The studies are in order to compare power converter topologies and control strategies. The studies reveal that the multilevel converter and the proposed fractional-order control strategy enable an improvement in the power quality, in comparison with the other power converters using a classical integer-order control strategy. This paper is on variable-speed wind turbines with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Three different drive train mass models and three different topologies for the power-electronic converters are considered. The three different topologies considered are respectively a matrix, a two-level and a multilevel converter. A novel control strategy, based on fractional-order controllers, is proposed for the wind turbines. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the behaviour of the wind turbines during a converter control malfunction, considering the fractional-order controllers. This paper describes the implementation of a distributed model predictive approach for automatic generation control. Performance results are discussed by comparing classical techniques (based on integral control) with model predictive control solutions (centralized and distributed) for different operational scenarios with two interconnected networks. These scenarios include variable load levels (ranging from a small to a large unbalance generated power to power consumption ratio) and simultaneously variable distance between the interconnected networks systems. For the two networks the paper also examines the impact of load variation in an island context (a network isolated from each other).

Formaldehyde (FA), also known as formalin, formal and methyl aldehydes, is a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling gas. It has an important application in embalming tissues and that result in exposures for workers in the pathology anatomy laboratories and mortuaries. Occupational exposure to FA has been shown to induce nasopharyngeal cancer and has been classified as carcinogenic to humans (group 1) on the basis of sufficient evidence in humans and sufficient evidence in experimental animals. Manifold in vitro studies clearly indicated that FA is genotoxic. FA induced various genotoxic effects in proliferating cultured mammalian cells. The cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay was originally developped as an ideal system form easuring micronucleus (MN), however it can also be used to measure nucleoplasmic bridges (NBP) and nuclear buds (NBUD). Over the past decade another unique mechanism of micronucleus formation, known as nuclear budding has emerged. NBUDS is considered as a marker of gene amplification and/or altered gene dosage because the nuclear budding process is the mechanism by which cells removed amplified and/excess DNA.

Genomic damage is probably the most important fundamental cause of development and degenerative disease. It is also well established that genomic damage is produced by environmental exposure to genotoxins, medical procedures (e.g. radiation and chemicals), micronutrient deficiency (e.g. folate), lifestyle factors (e.g. alcohol, smoking, drugs and stress), and genetic factors such as inherited defects in DNA metabolism and/or repair. Tobacco smoke has been associated to a higher risk of development of cancer, especially in the oral cavity, larynx and lungs, as these are places of direct contact with many carcinogenic tobacco’s compounds. Alcohol is definitely a recognized agent that influence cells in a genotoxic form, been citied as a strong agent with potential in the development of carcinogenic lesions. Epidemiological evidence points to a strong synergistic effect between cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption in the induction of cancers in the oral cavity. Approximately 90% of human cancers originate from epithelial cells. Therefore, it could be argued that oral epithelial cells represent a preferred target site for early genotoxic events induced by carcinogenic agents entering the body via inhalation and ingestion. The MN assay in buccal cells was also used to study cancerous and precancerous lesions and to monitor the effects of a number of chemopreventive agents.

Formaldehyde (FA) is ubiquitous in the environment and is a chemical agent that possesses high reactivity. Occupational exposure to FA has been shown to induce nasopharyngeal cancer and has been classified as carcinogenic to humans (group 1) on the basis of sufficient evidence in humans and sufficient evidence in experimental animals. The exposure to this substance is epidemiologically linked to cancer and nuclear changes detected by the cytokinesis-block micronucleus test (CBMN). This method is extensively used in molecular epidemiology, since it determines several biomarkers of genotoxicity, such as micronucleus (biomarkers of chromosomes breakage or loss), nucleoplasmic bridges (biomarker of chromosome rearrangement, poor repair and / or telomeres fusion) and nuclear buds (biomarker of elimination of amplified DNA). The gene X-ray repair cross-complementing group 3 (XRCC3) is involved in homologous recombination repair of cross-links and chromosomal double-strand breaks and at least one polymorphism has been reported in codon 241, a substitution of a methionine for a threonine.
