Introdução – Os componentes protésicos têm um papel fundamental na eficiência energética da marcha dos indivíduos amputados. Esta é uma área de conhecimento ainda em desenvolvimento, onde a investigação desempenha um papel central. Objectivos – Comparar e analisar o efeito de dois joelhos protésicos, 3R34, monocêntrico modular, de fricção constante, com auxiliar de extensão incorporado (A) e 3R92, monocêntrico modular, com travão de fricção e controlo pneumático da fase de balanço (B) no consumo energético e eficiência da marcha. Metodologia – Um indivíduo do sexo masculino de 27 anos, com amputação transfemural longa, foi sujeito a um protocolo submáximo de avaliação da resposta ao exercício em passadeira rolante (H/P/Cosmos(R) Mercury), através de um sistema de análise de gases breath‑by‑breath (Cosmed Quark PFT Ergo). Foi efetuado o mesmo protocolo com intervalo de dois dias, primeiro utilizando o joelho A e depois o B. As variáveis analisadas foram o consumo de O2 (VO2), o equivalente metabólico (MET) e a eficiência energética da marcha (Quociente de VO2 esperado de um individuo saudável e o VO2 do individuo em estudo). O esforço percecionado foi medido com a escala RPE de Borg. Resultados – O consumo energético com o joelho A (24,2 ml O2/kg/min; 6,9 MET) foi inferior ao obtido com o joelho B (28,68 ml O2/kg/min; 8,2 MET). A eficiência energética da marcha foi mais elevada para o joelho A (43%) do que para o joelho B (39%). Conclusão – A utilização do joelho A na prótese do indivíduo em estudo resulta numa marcha de menor consumo energético e maior eficiência. No entanto, este valor poderá estar influenciado pelo curto período de adaptação ao joelho B, sendo necessários mais estudos para confirmar os resultados do estudo e a influência deste fator. ABSTRACT - Background – Prosthetic components have a crucial role in the energy efficiency of amputee’s gait. This is an area of knowledge still in development, where research plays a central role. Objective – The purpose of this case study is to compare the impact in energy consumption of two prosthetic knees, titanium single‑axis constant friction knee joint with internal extension assist, 3R34 (A) and a single‑axis pneumatic swing phase control, 3R92 (B). Methodology – The participant was a transtibial amputee, male, with 27 years old, with no other clinical or functional impairments. To measure the energy expenditure a submaximal treadmill (H/P/Cosmos(R) Mercury) exercise stress test combined with a breath‑by‑breath analysis system (Cosmed Quark PFT Ergo) was used. The same test was applied to both knees, separated by two days. The analyzed variables were O2 consumption (VO2), metabolic equivalent (MET) and gait efficiency (VO2 ratio expected from a healthy individual and the studied individual). A rate of perceived exertion (Borg’s Scale) was used. Results – The results were favorable to knee A (24.2 ml O2/kg/min; 6.9 MET, 43% efficiency) compared with knee B (28.68 ml O2/kg/min; 8.2 MET, 39% efficiency). Conclusion – In this case, a less energy consumption gait corresponds to the prosthesis with knee A. These values may be influenced by the short adaptation period with knee B, so it’s necessary to perform more studies to confirm the previous results and to understand the truly impact of correct adaptation factor to the best prosthetics components for different patients.

Density-dependent effects, both positive or negative, can have an important impact on the population dynamics of species by modifying their population per-capita growth rates. An important type of such density-dependent factors is given by the so-called Allee effects, widely studied in theoretical and field population biology. In this study, we analyze two discrete single population models with overcompensating density-dependence and Allee effects due to predator saturation and mating limitation using symbolic dynamics theory. We focus on the scenarios of persistence and bistability, in which the species dynamics can be chaotic. For the chaotic regimes, we compute the topological entropy as well as the Lyapunov exponent under ecological key parameters and different initial conditions. We also provide co-dimension two bifurcation diagrams for both systems computing the periods of the orbits, also characterizing the period-ordering routes toward the boundary crisis responsible for species extinction via transient chaos. Our results show that the topological entropy increases as we approach to the parametric regions involving transient chaos, being maximum when the full shift R(L)(infinity) occurs, and the system enters into the essential extinction regime. Finally, we characterize analytically, using a complex variable approach, and numerically the inverse square-root scaling law arising in the vicinity of a saddle-node bifurcation responsible for the extinction scenario in the two studied models. The mis-evaluation of risk in securitized financial products is central to understanding the global financial crisis. This paper characterizes the evolution of risk factors affecting collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) based on subprime mortgages. A key feature of subprime mortgage-backed indices is that they are distinct in their vintage of issuance. Using a latent factor framework that incorporates this vintage effect, we show the increasing importance of common factors on more senior tranches during the crisis. An innovation of the paper is that we use the unbalanced panel structure of the data to identify the vintage, credit, common and idiosyncratic effects from a state-space specification.

The aim of the study is to adapt and then discuss the appropriateness of the Life Orientation Test as a one or two dimension scale. The research includes two studies; one is composed of a sequential sample of 280 people with multiple sclerosis, 71% female, and another includes a convenience sample of 615 individuals from the community, 51.1% female. Because the construct is built upon a theoretical assumption that has one dimension, we examine the hypothesis of one or two factor solutions through confirmatory factor analysis, and the two-dimension solution premise demonstrates better adjustment for both samples. The other psychometric properties explored show appropriate results for the Portuguese sample, and similar to the original ones; the Test therefore seems appropriate for use in cross cultural studies. Based on our results, we discuss whether the questionnaire is a one or two dimension instrument, concluding that it appears appropriate to accept the recommendations of the original authors to use it as a one-dimensional tool and, when necessary, to use both dimensions. - RESUMO: El objetivo del estudio es adaptar y discutir la adecuación de la prueba de Orientación de la Vida en una o dos escalas de dimensión. La investigación engloba dos estudios, uno constituido por una muestra secuencial de 280 personas con esclerosis múltiple, 71% mujeres y otro con una muestra de conveniencia de la comunidad de 615 individuos, 51,1% del sexo femenino. Como el constructo se asienta sobre la presunción teórica de que tiene una dimensión, inspeccionamos la hipótesis de una o dos soluciones de factor a través del análisis factorial confirmatorio y la hipótesis de dos dimensiones manifiesta un mejor ajuste para ambas muestras. Las otras propiedades psicométricas exploradas muestran los resultados apropiados para la muestra portuguesa, y semejantes a los originales. Parece apropiado para los estudios culturales transversales. Basándonos en nuestros resultados, discutimos si el cuestionario es un instrumento de una o dos dimensiones, concluyéndose que parece conveniente seguir las recomendaciones de los autores originales, para utilizarlo como un instrumento unidimensional y, si fuera necesario necesario, utilizar cada una de las dimensiones.

The importance of the organizational relationship (senior managers) with an internal public (employees) is the main focus of this research, aiming to understand how this relationship differs between the different publics. Nowadays, the relevance attributed by Public Relations to this relationship is crucial. The main purpose is to identify two consistent models to measure the impact of an organizational relationship on the internal public. The second purpose is to identify how the internal public react to this organizational relationship, namely by gender. The research was conducted in nine Portuguese companies with a sample of 1.244 subjects in order to study the context of the relationship and validate the identified models. The results show the gender stereotypes in the relationship in these companies and that the organizational relationship has an impact on organizational commitment with a consistent model that highlights the impact of Public Relations on a company's productivity.

A non-coherent vector delay/frequency-locked loop architecture for GNSS receivers is proposed. Two dynamics models are considered: PV (position and velocity) and PVA (position, velocity, and acceleration). In contrast with other vector architectures, the proposed approach does not require the estimation of signals amplitudes. Only coarse estimates of the carrier-to-noise ratios are necessary.

We study the implications for two-Higgs-doublet models of the recent announcement at the LHC giving a tantalizing hint for a Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV decaying into two photons. We require that the experimental result be within a factor of 2 of the theoretical standard model prediction, and analyze the type I and type II models as well as the lepton-specific and flipped models, subject to this requirement. It is assumed that there is no new physics other than two Higgs doublets. In all of the models, we display the allowed region of parameter space taking the recent LHC announcement at face value, and we analyze the W+W-, ZZ, (b) over barb, and tau(+)tau(-) expectations in these allowed regions. Throughout the entire range of parameter space allowed by the gamma gamma constraint, the numbers of events for Higgs decays into WW, ZZ, and b (b) over bar are not changed from the standard model by more than a factor of 2. In contrast, in the lepton-specific model, decays to tau(+)tau(-) are very sensitive across the entire gamma gamma-allowed region.

The two-Higgs-doublet model can be constrained by imposing Higgs-family symmetries and/or generalized CP symmetries. It is known that there are only six independent classes of such symmetry-constrained models. We study the CP properties of all cases in the bilinear formalism. An exact symmetry implies CP conservation. We show that soft breaking of the symmetry can lead to spontaneous CP violation (CPV) in three of the classes.
