Today, information overload and the lack of systems that enable locating employees with the right knowledge or skills are common challenges that large organisations face. This makes knowledge workers to re-invent the wheel and have problems to retrieve information from both internal and external resources. In addition, information is dynamically changing and ownership of data is moving from corporations to the individuals. However, there is a set of web based tools that may cause a major progress in the way people collaborate and share their knowledge. This article aims to analyse the impact of ‘Web 2.0’ on organisational knowledge strategies. A comprehensive literature review was done to present the academic background followed by a review of current ‘Web 2.0’ technologies and assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. As the framework of this study is oriented to business applications, the characteristics of the involved segments and tools were reviewed from an organisational point of view. Moreover, the ‘Enterprise 2.0’ paradigm does not only imply tools but also changes the way people collaborate, the way the work is done (processes) and finally impacts on other technologies. Finally, gaps in the literature in this area are outlined.

In the management of solid waste, pollutants over a wide range are released with different routes of exposure for workers. The potential for synergism among the pollutants raises concerns about potential adverse health effects, and there are still many uncertainties involved in exposure assessment. In this study, conventional (culture-based) and molecular real-time polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) methodologies were used to assess fungal air contamination in a waste-sorting plant which focused on the presence of three potential pathogenic/toxigenic fungal species: Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, and Stachybotrys chartarum. In addition, microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOC) were measured by photoionization detection. For all analysis, samplings were performed at five different workstations inside the facilities and also outdoors as a reference. Penicillium sp. were the most common species found at all plant locations. Pathogenic/toxigenic species (A. fumigatus and S. chartarum) were detected at two different workstations by RTPCR but not by culture-based techniques. MVOC concentration indoors ranged between 0 and 8.9 ppm (average 5.3 ± 3.16 ppm). Our results illustrated the advantage of combining both conventional and molecular methodologies in fungal exposure assessment. Together with MVOC analyses in indoor air, data obtained allow for a more precise evaluation of potential health risks associated with bioaerosol exposure. Consequently, with this knowledge, strategies may be developed for effective protection of the workers.

O objetivo da pesquisa pretende verificar se há um contributo da formação em mediação no desenvolvimento de conhecimentos nessa área e na mudança de atitude nos Assistentes Operacionais (AO), face à resolução de conflitos entre alunos. Os recreios das escolas do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico (1.ºCEB) são os locais onde ocorre a quase totalidade dos conflitos entre alunos (Fernández, 2007; Oliveira, 2007; Rosa, 2007). Esses recreios são supervisionados pelos AO, os quais devem ter formação específica em estratégias de resolução de conflitos. A mediação é apontada como a melhor estratégia na abordagem dos conflitos escolares, perspetivando melhoria na convivência escolar e na construção de um clima escolar positivo, propício à eficácia da educação. A estratégia de pesquisa baseia-se num estudo de intervenção com uma amostra de conveniência, simultaneamente qualitativo e quantitativo. Os dados foram recolhidos por questionário, por levantamento dos conhecimentos anteriores e posteriores à formação e por entrevistas aos participantes. No estudo participaram sete AO. Os resultados revelaram que os AO desenvolveram conhecimentos sobre mediação e percecionaram em si mesmos mudanças de atitude face à resolução de conflitos entre alunos. Os resultados ainda revelaram que os AO se sentem desvalorizados no meio escolar, mas motivados na interação com os alunos. Concluiu-se que a formação em mediação de conflitos oferece um contributo significativo no desenvolvimento de conhecimentos sobre mediação e facilita uma mudança de atitude na resolução de conflitos entre alunos. Concluiu-se também que os AO estão conscientes do seu papel educativo e que têm sugestões pertinentes de melhoria.ABSTRAT This research intends to evaluate whether training in mediation contributes for the development of knowledge in this area, and for changes in attitude, when Operational Assistants (OAs) sort out conflicts between students. The playgrounds of the schools of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education (1stCEB) are the places where almost the conflicts between students happen. These playgrounds are supervised by OAs, which must have specific training in conflict resolution strategies. Mediation is considered the best strategy for addressing students’ conflicts in order to improve school coexistence and positive climate, conducive to the effectiveness of education. The research strategy is based on an intervention study with a convenience sample, both qualitative and quantitative. Data was collected by questionnaire, assessment of knowledge before and after training and final interviews. The participants were 7 OAs. The results revealed the development of knowledge about mediation, who perceives themselves as changing attitudes towards conflicts resolution between students. The results also revealed that the OAs feel devalued, but motivated when interacting to students. Training in conflict mediation offers a significant contribution in the development of knowledge about mediation and facilitates a change of attitude in sorting out conflicts between students. It was also concluded that the OAs are aware of their educational role and have relevant suggestions for improvement.

Power converters play a vital role in the integration of wind power into the electrical grid. Variable-speed wind turbine generator systems have a considerable interest of application for grid connection at constant frequency. In this paper, comprehensive simulation studies are carried out with three power converter topologies: matrix, two-level and multilevel. A fractional-order control strategy is studied for the variable-speed operation of wind turbine generator systems. The studies are in order to compare power converter topologies and control strategies. The studies reveal that the multilevel converter and the proposed fractional-order control strategy enable an improvement in the power quality, in comparison with the other power converters using a classical integer-order control strategy. O objetivo desta investigação é compreender como é que alunos do 3.º ano de escolaridade desenvolvem o conceito de área com ênfase em conhecimentos sobre figuras e propriedades geométricas. Para melhor objetivar o estudo, formulei três questões que orientaram a investigação. Pretendo (1) compreender como é que os alunos mobilizam conhecimentos sobre as propriedades das figuras geométricas no estudo da área de uma figura plana? A que estratégias recorrem? Que dificuldades sentem? (2) que compreensão é que os alunos têm sobre o processo de medição? e (3) que ideias e/ou experiências são relevantes no desenvolvimento do conceito de área? Este é um estudo que se insere no paradigma interpretativo e que segue uma abordagem qualitativa, pelo que não visa generalização de resultados, mas uma descrição compreensiva dos processos vivenciados, tendo em conta os contextos pessoais e sociais. Optei por realizar dois Estudos de Caso. Os dados foram recolhidos através de fontes diversificadas, donde se destacam a observação participante e a análise de registos audiovisuais e escritos dos alunos. A análise dos dados teve por referência categorias criadas com base em contributos da literatura de referência. As conclusões desta investigação centram-se numa análise acerca das estratégias a que os alunos em estudo tendencialmente mais recorrem, visando também algumas das suas dificuldades mais relevantes e sobre as quais importa refletir. Destaca-se que ambos os alunos foram capazes de recorrer a raciocínios baseados e não baseados na medida, embora seja evidente uma tendência para raciocínios baseados na medida. É igualmente importante referir que os dois alunos revelaram um bom conhecimento acerca do processo de medição, mesmo quando ele implicava a definição de uma unidade de medida adequada e/ou mudança de unidade. É dado, também, destaque às experiências matemáticas que devem ser proporcionadas aos alunos no sentido do desenvolvimento de um conhecimento amplo e flexível do conceito de área. - Abstract The purpose of this investigation is to understand the development of 3rd year students’ concept of area based on their knowledge of geometrical properties and figures. As means to orientate the present study, the following investigation questions were formulated: 1) how do students use their knowledge about geometrical properties in order to understand geometrical shape’s areas? Which strategies do they use? What do they struggle with? (2) What is their understanding about measurement? And (3) what are the most relevant mathematical reasonings and classroom tasks in the development of the concept of area? This is a study that follows a qualitative approach: it does not intend to be a generalization, but a fully comprehensive description of the witnessed learning processes, bearing in mind the social and personal contexts. As such, two study-cases were developed. The data were collected through various sources, such as direct observation and analysis of audiovisual records or written worksheets. The scrutiny of the generated data was undertaken following criteria based on the literature of reference. The conclusions of this investigation are centered on the most used strategies as well as the students’ difficulties upon which it is important to discuss. It was noticed that the two students were able to use both measurement and non measurement thinking – although, preferably, they tend to use the first one. On the other hand, it is equally demonstrated that the two students have shown good acquaintance about measurement, even if obliged to the establishment of a suitable unit of measurement and/or change of units. At last, it is also referred which mathematical classroom tasks are important to develop a sustained and comprehensive concept of area.

O Ninho é uma Associação que procura o conhecimento real do fenómeno prostituição, do próprio meio e dos seus agentes, bem como garantir qualidade na intervenção técnica e nas respostas sociais. Assim, o trabalho desenvolvido pelos técnicos objetiva responder aos problemas identificados pelas mulheres prostitutas e colmatar as lacunas nas respostas existentes no que concerne ao fenómeno social prostituição feminina de rua. Este estudo pretende ir ao encontro da maior preocupação associada a esta problemática e, mais especificamente, no caso da prostituição feminina de rua – a preocupação com a inserção social das mulheres. Para a elaboração do presente trabalho foram utilizadas estratégias metodológicas como a observação participante e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Da análise dos resultados verificamos que a prostituição agudiza os estereótipos, preconceitos e o estigma social que tanto marginaliza as mulheres prostituídas. Assim, todo o trabalho técnico realizado n’O Ninho visa promover a autonomia das mulheres, a aquisição de regras e hábitos de trabalho, o cumprimento e definição de objetivos e a posterior procura de emprego. - ABSTRACT O Ninho is an association that seeks the real knowledge of the phenomenon prostitution, of the environment and their agents, as well as ensure quality in technical intervention and social responses. Thus, the work done by the technicians aims to respond to the problems identified by the prostitutes and fill the gaps in the existing responses, concerning to the social phenomenon female prostitution of street. This study intends to respond to the main concern associated with this issue and, more specifically, in the case of female street prostitution – the concern with social inclusion of women. For the preparation of this work, as methodological strategies, we used the participant observation and semi-structured interviews. By the analysis of the results we found that prostitution exacerbates the stereotypes, prejudices and the social stigma that marginalize women forced into prostitution. Thus, all the technical work done at O Ninho aims to promote women's autonomy, rules and work habits acquisition, setting goals and subsequent job search.

This work describes a methodology to extract symbolic rules from trained neural networks. In our approach, patterns on the network are codified using formulas on a Lukasiewicz logic. For this we take advantage of the fact that every connective in this multi-valued logic can be evaluated by a neuron in an artificial network having, by activation function the identity truncated to zero and one. This fact simplifies symbolic rule extraction and allows the easy injection of formulas into a network architecture. We trained this type of neural network using a back-propagation algorithm based on Levenderg-Marquardt algorithm, where in each learning iteration, we restricted the knowledge dissemination in the network structure. This makes the descriptive power of produced neural networks similar to the descriptive power of Lukasiewicz logic language, minimizing the information loss on the translation between connectionist and symbolic structures. To avoid redundance on the generated network, the method simplifies them in a pruning phase, using the "Optimal Brain Surgeon" algorithm. We tested this method on the task of finding the formula used on the generation of a given truth table. For real data tests, we selected the Mushrooms data set, available on the UCI Machine Learning Repository.

Levels of risk for future disability can be assessed with grip strength. This assessment is of fundamental importance for establishing prevention strategies. It also allows verifying relationships with functional capacity of individuals. Most studies on grip strength use the JAMAR Hydraulic dynamometer that provides the value of isometric force obtained during the performance of grip movement and is considered the “gold standard” for measurement of grip strength. However, there are different dynamometers available commercially, such as portable computerized dynamometer E-Link (Biometrics), which provides the value of maximum force (peak force) in addition to other variables as the rate of fatigue for hand strength, among others. Of our knowledge, there are no studies that allow us to accept or not and compare values obtained with both devices and perhaps use them interchangeably. The aim of this study was to evaluate the absolute agreement between the measurements of grip strength (peak force or maximum force in kg) obtained from two different devices (portable dynamometers): a computerized (E-Link, Biometrics) and one hydraulic (JAMAR).

A criação da medida de política educativa (Despacho Normativo n.º 55/2008) - Territórios Educativos de Intervenção Prioritária (TEIP) corresponde à necessidade de concretização de um princípio da Lei de Bases do Sistema Educativo português, visando assegurar uma educação de base para todos, bem sucedida. Esta mesma medida acontece na sequência de uma outra anterior com as mesmas características, criada no ano lectivo de 1996/1997. A sua implementação no terreno foi objecto de um estudo encomendado pelo Instituto de Inovação Educacional no qual participei, integrando uma equipa de investigação da Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Lisboa. Nesta comunicação, proponho-me revisitar esse mesmo estudo, dando conta do balanço crítico então realizado, e, à luz das suas principais conclusões, refletir agora na qualidade de perito externo de um TEIP da região de Lisboa, sobre os modos como os TEIP2 evoluíram, em que sentido se deu tal evolução e quais os problemas que persistem. A consecução de um dos objectivos centrais desta medida de política educativa, especificamente a melhoria da qualidade das aprendizagens traduzida no sucesso educativo dos alunos, parece, de acordo com os relatórios oficiais, não ser ainda muito expressiva nem muito consistente. Torna-se, portanto, necessário interrogar e problematizar as práticas de ensino realizadas pelos professores, repensando estratégias pedagógicas que se configurem relevantes para dar expressão real àquele objectivo.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse how educational policies about school violence are reinterpreted and implemented at school level and if this process contributes to a more pluralistic and democratic school. A research carried out in 3 clusters of schools showed that the diversity of understandings and strategies to face school violence, higher within the territories than between them, was associated to the school board's agendas and the legitimacy of the different actors to interpret and act within the national policies framework. There was a high consistency between violence management strategies and the ways schools faced social and cultural diversity. Those who favour more inclusive strategies to deal with violence tend to provide higher educational opportunities in schools, inversely, those who favour repressive strategies are more likely to support educational and social selective strategies, with less educational offer; less participation of teachers, students and parents in violence regulation.
