A package of B-spline finite strip models is developed for the linear analysis of piezolaminated plates and shells. This package is associated to a global optimization technique in order to enhance the performance of these types of structures, subjected to various types of objective functions and/or constraints, with discrete and continuous design variables. The models considered are based on a higher-order displacement field and one can apply them to the static, free vibration and buckling analyses of laminated adaptive structures with arbitrary lay-ups, loading and boundary conditions. Genetic algorithms, with either binary or floating point encoding of design variables, were considered to find optimal locations of piezoelectric actuators as well as to determine the best voltages applied to them in order to obtain a desired structure shape. These models provide an overall economy of computing effort for static and vibration problems.

A educação de crianças com necessidades educativas especiais (NEE) coloca nos nossos dias grandes desafios às escolas e famílias. A Inclusão apresenta-se neste contexto como a expressão chave, reveladora de um novo olhar e decidir, expressa na legislação, no discurso político e nas actuais disposições académicas e pedagógicas. Não obstante, nem todos os alunos com NEE dispõem de respostas integralmente inclusivas. Os alunos com espectro de Autismo, por exemplo, colocam às escolas e aos pais sérios problemas, os quais, devido à sua intensidade e variabilidade, questionam sem dúvida o sentido das respostas educativas adequadas a alunos portadores desta problemática. O objectivo geral deste estudo é, neste contexto, procurar aceder a um conhecimento mais actualizado sobre uma Unidade de Ensino Estruturado no atendimento a alunos com espectro de Autismo (UEEA). Pretende-se de modo mais específico aceder ao que pensam os professores sobre o atendimento educativo a alunos com espectro de Autismo e caracterizar uma unidade de ensino estruturado no que respeita aos recursos humanos, físicos e materiais, bem como as estratégias de trabalho privilegiadas no atendimento a este tipo de alunos e formas de colaboração entre técnicos e famílias. No sentido de melhor compreender e aprofundar esta problemática foram realizadas entrevistas semi-directivas a 3 professores do ensino especial com experiência em UEEA e a 3 professores do ensino regular. A escolha dos professores baseou-se em critérios relacionados com a sua experiência no atendimento a alunos com problemas de Autismo. A natureza do objecto de estudo induziu a um desenho de investigação de natureza interpretativa de carácter descritivo - Estudo de caso. O corpus do trabalho foi constituído pelas entrevistas semi-directivas, sujeitas a uma análise qualitativa de acordo com os procedimentos previsto para a análise de conteúdo. Com base na análise dos dados recolhidos, foi possível identificar e caracterizar aspectos relevantes sobre o que pensam os professores sobre a intervenção educativa de alunos com espectro de Autismo e sobre as respostas educativas existentes na UEEA.

Introdução – A técnica de Difusão por Ressonância Magnética (RM), ao avaliar o movimento das moléculas de água nos tecidos, permite inferir sobre a arquitetura dos mesmos, em particular relativamente à celularidade, volume celular e permeabilidade das membranas. O Coeficiente de Difusão Aparente (ADC) é um parâmetro quantificável da imagem ponderada em difusão (DWI). A sua análise poderá fornecer informação clínica adicional sobre estas lesões, sobretudo em relação à sua caracterização histológica. Objetivos – Caracterizar e diferenciar tipos e alguns subtipos de lesões mamárias através da análise do ADC. Metodologia – 20 Mulheres com 23 lesões mamárias foram submetidas a RM mamária: 3 lesões benignas (3 Fibroadenomas-FA) e 20 malignas (16 Carcinomas Ductais Invasivos-CDI, 2 Carcinomas Ductais In Situ-CDIS e 2 Carcinomas Invasivos Lobulares-CLI). Num equipamento 1.5T aplicou-se uma sequência de Difusão (b=0,50,250,500,750,1000 s/mm2). Obteve-se o ADC através do ajuste exponencial da intensidade de sinal das lesões em função do valor de b, fazendo-se corresponder os valores de ADC à respetiva caracterização histológica e posterior comparação com a literatura. Resultados e Discussão – As lesões malignas apresentaram ADCs significativamente (p=0,014) inferiores [(0,94±0,22)x10-3 mm2/s] aos das benignas [(1,43±0,25)x10-3 mm2/s]. A justificação pode residir no aumento da celularidade e consequente restrição da Difusão que se observa nas lesões malignas. Os CDI apresentaram ADCs baixos [(0,88±0,17)x10-3 mm2/s], enquanto que os CDIS apresentaram ADCs mais elevados [(1,33±0,29)x10-3 mm2/s]. Estes resultados estão de acordo com o facto dos CDIS estarem limitados aos ductos mamários, mantendo-se menos alterada a estrutura do tecido adjacente e resultando numa menor restrição à difusão que nos CDI. Verificaram-se diferenças significativas entre FA e CDI (p=0,010) e entre CDI e CDIS (p=0,049). Conclusões – O ADC possibilita a diferenciação entre lesões mamárias benignas e malignas, bem como entre alguns tipos histológicos. O desenvolvimento deste conceito pode representar um avanço no papel da RM na avaliação destas neoplasias. ABSTRACT - Introduction – The Magnetic Resonance (MR) diffusion technique measures the movement of water molecules in tissues. Therefore, it provides useful information about tissue architecture, specially regarding tissue cellularity, cell volume and membrane permeability. The quantification of diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) data is done by measuring the so-called. Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC). This parameter provides additional clinical information about breast lesions, and potentially allows for in-vivo histological characterization. Purpose – To characterize and differentiate breast lesions through ADC analysis. Methodology – The study comprised 20 women, with 23 breast lesions: 3 benign lesions - 3 Fibroadenomas (FA); and 20 malignant - 16 Invasive Ductal Carcinomas (CDI), 2 Ductal Carcinomas In Situ (CDIS), 2 Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (CLI). On a 1.5T equipment a diffusion-weighted sequence with 6 b-values (b=0,50,250,500,750,1000 s/mm2) was used to examine the patients. ADC was obtained by fitting an exponential to data of lesion signal intensity vs. b values. A correspondence of ADC values to histological lesion characterization was done and finally, the results were comparison with the literature. Results and Discussion – Malignant lesions showed inferior ADCs significantly (p=0.014) lower ((0.94±0.22)x10-3 mm2/s) than the benign lesions ((1.43±0.25)x10-3 mm2/s). This may be associated to increasead cellularity in malignant lesions, which result in higher tissue restriction to diffusion. CDI showed low ADC values ((0.88±0.17)x10-3 mm2/s), while the CDIS showed higher ADCs ((1.33±0.29)x10-3 mm2/s). These results agree with the fact that CDIS are limited to mammary ducts, maintaining a less altered neighboring tissue structure, which results in a lower restriction to diffusion than observed in CDI. Significant differences between FA and CDI (p=0.010) and between CDI and CDIS (p=0.049) were observed. Conclusion – The ADC parameter is able to differentiate between malignant and benign breast lesions, as well as between some histological types.

A imagem por difusão em RM caracteriza o movimento microscópico e aleatório das moléculas de água no tecido e a sua quantificação através do ADC permite avaliar a celularidade e estrutura do mesmo. O valor b corresponde ao factor de sensibilização à difusão, sendo que as imagens podem ser mais ou menos ponderadas em difusão. Segundo vários autores torna-se importante a determinação dos valores de b mais adequados pois este parâmetro é variável com o tipo de equipamento utilizado, podendo influenciar a qualidade diagnóstica do método.

Functionally graded materials are composite materials wherein the composition of the constituent phases can vary in a smooth continuous way with a gradation which is function of its spatial coordinates. This characteristic proves to be an important issue as it can minimize abrupt variations of the material properties which are usually responsible for localized high values of stresses, and simultaneously providing an effective thermal barrier in specific applications. In the present work, it is studied the static and free vibration behaviour of functionally graded sandwich plate type structures, using B-spline finite strip element models based on different shear deformation theories. The effective properties of functionally graded materials are estimated according to Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. These sandwich structures can also consider the existence of outer skins of piezoelectric materials, thus achieving them adaptive characteristics. Video coding technologies have played a major role in the explosion of large market digital video applications and services. In this context, the very popular MPEG-x and H-26x video coding standards adopted a predictive coding paradigm, where complex encoders exploit the data redundancy and irrelevancy to 'control' much simpler decoders. This codec paradigm fits well applications and services such as digital television and video storage where the decoder complexity is critical, but does not match well the requirements of emerging applications such as visual sensor networks where the encoder complexity is more critical. The Slepian Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems brought the possibility to develop the so-called Wyner-Ziv video codecs, following a different coding paradigm where it is the task of the decoder, and not anymore of the encoder, to (fully or partly) exploit the video redundancy. Theoretically, Wyner-Ziv video coding does not incur in any compression performance penalty regarding the more traditional predictive coding paradigm (at least for certain conditions). In the context of Wyner-Ziv video codecs, the so-called side information, which is a decoder estimate of the original frame to code, plays a critical role in the overall compression performance. For this reason, much research effort has been invested in the past decade to develop increasingly more efficient side information creation methods. This paper has the main objective to review and evaluate the available side information methods after proposing a classification taxonomy to guide this review, allowing to achieve more solid conclusions and better identify the next relevant research challenges. After classifying the side information creation methods into four classes, notably guess, try, hint and learn, the review of the most important techniques in each class and the evaluation of some of them leads to the important conclusion that the side information creation methods provide better rate-distortion (RD) performance depending on the amount of temporal correlation in each video sequence. It became also clear that the best available Wyner-Ziv video coding solutions are almost systematically based on the learn approach. The best solutions are already able to systematically outperform the H.264/AVC Intra, and also the H.264/AVC zero-motion standard solutions for specific types of content. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. We consider a fluid of hard boomerangs, each composed of two hard spherocylinders joined at their ends at an angle Psi. The resulting particle is nonconvex and biaxial. The occurence of nematic order in such a system has been investigated using Straley's theory, which is a simplificaton of Onsager's second-virial treatment of long hard rods, and by bifurcation analysis. The excluded volume of two hard boomerangs has been approximated by the sum of excluded volumes of pairs of constituent spherocylinders, and the angle-dependent second-virial coefficient has been replaced by a low-order interpolating function. At the so-called Landau point, Psi(Landau)approximate to 107.4 degrees, the fluid undergoes a continuous transition from the isotropic to a biaxial nematic (B) phase. For Psi not equal Psi(Landau) ordering is via a first-order transition into a rod-like uniaxial nematic phase (N(+)) if Psi > Psi(Landau), or a plate-like uniaxial nematic (N(-)) phase if Psi < Psi(Landau). The B phase is separated from the N(+) and N(-) phases by two lines of continuous transitions meeting at the Landau point. This topology of the phase diagram is in agreement with previous studies of spheroplatelets and biaxial ellipsoids. We have checked the accuracy of our theory by performing numerical calculations of the angle-dependent second virial coefficient, which yields Psi(Landau)approximate to 110 degrees for very long rods, and Psi(Landau)approximate to 90 degrees for short rods. In the latter case, the I-N transitions occur at unphysically high packing fractions, reflecting the inappropriateness of the second-virial approximation in this limit.

In video communication systems, the video signals are typically compressed and sent to the decoder through an error-prone transmission channel that may corrupt the compressed signal, causing the degradation of the final decoded video quality. In this context, it is possible to enhance the error resilience of typical predictive video coding schemes using as inspiration principles and tools from an alternative video coding approach, the so-called Distributed Video Coding (DVC), based on the Distributed Source Coding (DSC) theory. Further improvements in the decoded video quality after error-prone transmission may also be obtained by considering the perceptual relevance of the video content, as distortions occurring in different regions of a picture have a different impact on the user's final experience. In this context, this paper proposes a Perceptually Driven Error Protection (PDEP) video coding solution that enhances the error resilience of a state-of-the-art H.264/AVC predictive video codec using DSC principles and perceptual considerations. To increase the H.264/AVC error resilience performance, the main technical novelties brought by the proposed video coding solution are: (i) design of an improved compressed domain perceptual classification mechanism; (ii) design of an improved transcoding tool for the DSC-based protection mechanism; and (iii) integration of a perceptual classification mechanism in an H.264/AVC compliant codec with a DSC-based error protection mechanism. The performance results obtained show that the proposed PDEP video codec provides a better performing alternative to traditional error protection video coding schemes, notably Forward Error Correction (FEC)-based schemes. Portugal joined the effort to create the EPOS infrastructure in 2008, and it became immediately apparent that a national network of Earth Sciences infrastructures was required to participate in the initiative. At that time, FCT was promoting the creation of a national infrastructure called RNG - Rede Nacional de Geofísica (National Geophysics Network). A memorandum of understanding had been agreed upon, and it seemed therefore straightforward to use RNG (enlarged to include relevant participants that were not RNG members) as the Portuguese partner to EPOS-PP. However, at the time of signature of the EPOS-PP contract with the European Commission (November 2010), RNG had not gained formal identity yet, and IST (one of the participants) signed the grant agreement on behalf of the Portuguese consortium. During 2011 no progress was made towards the formal creation of RNG, and the composition of the network – based on proposals submitted to a call issued in 2002 – had by then become obsolete. On February 2012, the EPOS national contact point was mandated by the representatives of the participating national infrastructures to request from FCT the recognition of a new consortium - C3G, Collaboratory for Geology, Geodesy and Geophysics - as the Portuguese partner to EPOS-PP. This request was supported by formal letters from the following institutions: ‐ LNEG. Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (National Geological Survey); ‐ IGP ‐ Instituto Geográfico Português (National Geographic Institute); ‐ IDL, Instituto Dom Luiz – Laboratório Associado ‐ CGE, Centro de Geofísica de Évora; ‐ FCTUC, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra; ‐ Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa; ‐ Instituto Superior Técnico; ‐ Universidade da Beira Interior. While Instituto de Meteorologia (Meteorological Institute, in charge of the national seismographic network) actively supports the national participation in EPOS, a letter of support was not feasible in view of the organic changes underway at the time. C3G aims at the integration and coordination, at national level, of existing Earth Sciences infrastructures, namely: ‐ seismic and geodetic networks (IM, IST, IDL, CGE); ‐ rock physics laboratories (ISEL); ‐ geophysical laboratories dedicated to natural resources and environmental studies; ‐ geological and geophysical data repositories; ‐ facilities for data storage and computing resources. The C3G - Collaboratory for Geology, Geodesy and Geophysics will be coordinated by Universidade da Beira Interior, whose Department of Informatics will host the C3G infrastructure.

We discuss theoretical and phenomenological aspects of two-Higgs-doublet extensions of the Standard Model. In general, these extensions have scalar mediated flavour changing neutral currents which are strongly constrained by experiment. Various strategies are discussed to control these flavour changing scalar currents and their phenomenological consequences are analysed. In particular, scenarios with natural flavour conservation are investigated, including the so-called type I and type II models as well as lepton-specific and inert models. Type III models are then discussed, where scalar flavour changing neutral currents are present at tree level, but are suppressed by either a specific ansatz for the Yukawa couplings or by the introduction of family symmetries leading to a natural suppression mechanism. We also consider the phenomenology of charged scalars in these models. Next we turn to the role of symmetries in the scalar sector. We discuss the six symmetry-constrained scalar potentials and their extension into the fermion sector. The vacuum structure of the scalar potential is analysed, including a study of the vacuum stability conditions on the potential and the renormalization-group improvement of these conditions is also presented. The stability of the tree level minimum of the scalar potential in connection with electric charge conservation and its behaviour under CP is analysed. The question of CP violation is addressed in detail, including the cases of explicit CP violation and spontaneous CP violation. We present a detailed study of weak basis invariants which are odd under CP. These invariants allow for the possibility of studying the CP properties of any two-Higgs-doublet model in an arbitrary Higgs basis. A careful study of spontaneous CP violation is presented, including an analysis of the conditions which have to be satisfied in order for a vacuum to violate CP. We present minimal models of CP violation where the vacuum phase is sufficient to generate a complex CKM matrix, which is at present a requirement for any realistic model of spontaneous CP violation.

The associated production of a Higgs boson and a top-quark pair, t (t) over barH, in proton-proton collisions is addressed in this paper for a center of mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. Dileptonic final states of t (t) over barH events with two oppositely charged leptons and four jets from the decays t -> bW(+) -> bl(+)v(l), (t) over bar -> (b) over barW(-) -> (b) over barl(-)(v) over bar (l) and h -> b (b) over bar are used. Signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed by applying a kinematic fit. New angular distributions of the decay products as well as angular asymmetries are explored in order to improve discrimination of t (t) over barH signal events over the dominant irreducible background contribution, t (t) over barb (b) over bar. Even after the full kinematic fit reconstruction of the events, the proposed angular distributions and asymmetries are still quite different in the t (t) over barH signal and the dominant background (t (t) over barb (b) over bar).
