A series of mono(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)metal-(II) complexes with nitro-substituted thienyl acetylide ligands of general formula [M(eta(5)-C5H5)(L)(C C{C4H2S}(n)NO2)] (M = Fe, L = kappa(2)-DPPE, n = 1,2; M = Ru, L = kappa(2)-DPPE, 2 PPh3, n = 1, 2; M = Ni, L = PPh3, n = 1, 2) has been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of the complexes was explored by cyclic voltammetry. Quadratic hyperpolarizabilities (beta) of the complexes have been determined by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements at 1500 nm. The effect of donor abilities of different organometallic fragments on the quadratic hyperpolarizabilities was studied and correlated with spectroscopic and electrochemical data. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations were employed to get a better understanding of the second-order nonlinear optical properties in these complexes. In this series, the complexity of the push pull systems is revealed; even so, several trends in the second-order hyperpolarizability can still be recognized. In particular, the overall data seem to indicate that the existence of other electronic transitions in addition to the main MLCT clearly controls the effectiveness of the organometallic donor ability on the second-order NLO properties of these push pull systems.

New cationic ruthenium(II) complexes with the formula [Ru(eta(5)-C5H5)(LL)(1-BuIm)] [Z], with (LL) = 2PPh(3) or DPPE, and Z = CF3SO3-, PF6-, BPh4-, have been synthesized and fully characterized. Spectroscopic and electrochemical studies revealed that the electronic properties of the coordinated 1-butylimidazole were clearly influenced by the nature of the phosphane coligands (LL) and also by the different counter ions. The solid state structures of the six complexes determined by X-ray crystallographic studies, confirmed the expected distorted three-legged piano stool structure. However the geometry of the 1-butylimidazole ligand was found considerably different in all six compounds, being governed by the stereochemistry of the mono and bidentate coligands (PPh3 or DPPE).

The reaction of the Schiff base (3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (H3L) with a copper(II) salt of a base of a strong acid, i.e., nitrate, chloride or sulphate, yielded the mononuclear complexes [Cu(H2L)(NO3)(H2O)] (1), [Cu(H2L)Cl]center dot 2MeOH (2) and the binuclear complex [{Cu(H2L)}(2)(mu-SO4)]center dot 2MeOH (3), respectively, with H2L- in the keto form. Compounds 1-3 were characterized by elemental analysis, Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, Electrospray Ionisation-Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and single crystal X-ray crystallography. All compounds act as efficient catalysts towards the peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, under mild conditions. In the presence of an acid promoter, overall yields (based on the alkane) up to 25% and a turnover number (TON) of 250 (TOF of 42 h(-1)) after 6 h, were achieved.

Four ruthenium(II) complexes with the formula [Ru(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))(PP)L][CF(3)SO(3)], being (PP = two triphenylphosphine molecules), L = 1-benzylimidazole, 1; (PP = two triphenylphosphine molecules), L = 2,2'bipyridine, 2; (PP = two triphenylphosphine molecules), L = 4-Methylpyridine, 3; (PP = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphine) ethane), L = 4-Methylpyridine, 4, were prepared, in view to evaluate their potentialities as antitumor agents. The compounds were completely characterized by NMR spectroscopy and their crystal and molecular structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies were carried out giving for all the compounds quasi-reversible processes. The images obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM) suggest interaction with pBR322 plasmid DNA. Measurements of the viscosity of solutions of free DNA and DNA incubated with different concentrations of the compounds confirmed this interaction. The cytotoxicity of compounds 1234 was much higher than that of cisplatin against human leukemia cancer cells (HL-60 cells). IC(50) values for all the compounds are in the range of submicromolar amounts. Apoptotic death percentage was also studied resulting similar than that of cisplatin. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The ruthenium(II)-cymene complexes [Ru(eta(6)-cymene)(bha)Cl] with substituted halogenobenzohydroxamato (bha) ligands (substituents = 4-F, 4-Cl, 4-Br, 2,4-F-2, 3,4-F-2, 2,5-F-2, 2,6-F-2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential electrolysis, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. The compositions of their frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) were established by DFT calculations, and the oxidation and reduction potentials are shown to follow the orders of the estimated vertical ionization potential and electron affinity, respectively. The electrochemical E-L Lever parameter is estimated for the first time for the various bha ligands, which can thus be ordered according to their electron-donor character. All complexes exhibit very strong protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) inhibitory activity, even much higher than that of genistein, the clinically used PTK inhibitory drug. The complex containing the 2,4-difluorobenzohydroxamato ligand is the most active one, and the dependences of the PTK activity of the complexes and of their redox potentials on the ring substituents are discussed. fac-[MBr(CO)(3)(pypzH)] (M = Mn, Re; pypzH = (3-(2-pyridyl) pyrazole) complexes are prepared from fac[ MBr(CO)(3)(NCMe)(2)] and pypzH. The result of their deprotonation depends on the metallic substrate: the rhenium complex affords cleanly the bimetallic compound [fac-{Re(CO)(3)(mu(2)-pypz)}] 2 (mu(2)-pypz = mu(2)-3-(2pyridyl-. 1N) pyrazolate-2. 1N), which was crystallographically characterized, whereas a similar manganese complex was not detected. When two equivalents of pyridylpyrazolate are used, polymetallic species [fac-M(CO) 3(mu(2)-pypz)(mu(3)-pypz) M'] (mu(3)-pypz = mu(3)-3-(2-pyridyl-kappa N-1) pyrazolate-1 kappa 2N, N: 2. 1N:; M = Mn, M' = Li, Na, K; M = Re, M' = Na) are obtained. The crystal structures of the manganese carbonylate complexes were determined. The lithium complex is a monomer containing one manganese and one lithium atom, whereas the sodium and potassium complexes are dimers and reveal an unprecedented coordination mode for the bridging 3-(2-pyridyl) pyrazolate ligand, where the nitrogen of the pyridyl fragment and the nitrogen-1 of pyrazolate are chelated to manganese atoms, and each nitrogen-2 of pyrazolate is coordinated to two alkaline atoms. The polymetallic carbonylate complexes are unstable in solution and evolve spontaneously to [fac-{Re(CO) 3(mu(2)-pypz)}](2) or to the trimetallic paramagnetic species [MnII(mu(2)-pypz) 2{fac-{MnI(CO) 3(mu(2)-pypz)}(2)}]. The related complex cis-[MnCl2(pypzH)(2)] was also synthesized and structurally characterized. The electrochemical behavior of the new homo-and heteropolymetallic 3-(2-pyridyl) pyrazolate complexes has been studied and details of their redox properties are reported.

A number of novel, water-stable redox-active cobalt complexes of the C-functionalized tripodal ligands tris(pyrazolyl)methane XC(pz)(3) (X = HOCH2, CH2OCH2Py or CH2OSO2Me) are reported along with their effects on DNA. The compounds were isolated as air-stable solids and fully characterized by IR and FIR spectroscopies, ESI-MS(+/-), cyclic voltammetry, controlled potential electrolysis, elemental analysis and, in a number of cases, also by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. They showed moderate cytotoxicity in vitro towards HCT116 colorectal carcinoma and HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma human cancer cell lines. This viability loss is correlated with an increase of tumour cell lines apoptosis. Reactivity studies with biomolecules, such as reducing agents, H2O2, plasmid DNA and UV-visible titrations were also performed to provide tentative insights into the mode of action of the complexes. Incubation of Co(II) complexes with pDNA induced double strand breaks, without requiring the presence of any activator. This pDNA cleavage appears to be mediated by O-centred radical species.
