Este relatório, escrito no âmbito do estágio profissional realizado no departamento de Manutenção e Engenharia da TAP Portugal, com o tema “Análise do Line Maintenance Manual numa perspectiva de melhoria contínua do Programa de Manutenção Avião”, tem como objectivo descrever a análise efectuada e as oportunidades de melhoria identificadas no Line Maintenance Manual, documento que serve de suporte às actividades da Manutenção de Linha. Espera-se que o trabalho realizado traga benefícios para a TAP Manutenção e Engenharia a médio e longo prazo, tais como a agilização das futuras revisões ao referido documento, a redução de recursos envolvidos nas inspecções de trânsito e, quiçá, a correcção de aspectos com implicações directas na operação segura das aeronaves. O trabalho desenvolvido no estágio implicou um estudo aprofundado do processo que resulta no estabelecimento dos programas de manutenção das aeronaves actuais, bem como dos documentos nele envolvidos, pelo que a análise específica do Line Maintenance Manual foi realizada no contexto muito mais abrangente da teoria da Manutenção Aeronáutica.

A new circuit topology is proposed to replace the actual pulse transformer and thyratron based resonant modulator that supplies the 60 kV target potential for the ion acceleration of the On-Line Isotope Mass Separator accelerator, the stability of which is critical for the mass resolution downstream separator, at the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The improved modulator uses two solid-state switches working together, each one based on the Marx generator concept, operating as series and parallel switches, reducing the stress on the series stacked semiconductors, and also as auxiliary pulse generator in order to fulfill the target requirements. Preliminary results of a 10 kV prototype, using 1200 V insulated gate bipolar transistors and capacitors in the solid-state Marx circuits, ten stages each, with an electrical equivalent circuit of the target, are presented, demonstrating both the improved voltage stability and pulse flexibility potential wanted for this new modulator.

We start by studying the existence of positive solutions for the differential equation u '' = a(x)u - g(u), with u ''(0) = u(+infinity) = 0, where a is a positive function, and g is a power or a bounded function. In other words, we are concerned with even positive homoclinics of the differential equation. The main motivation is to check that some well-known results concerning the existence of homoclinics for the autonomous case (where a is constant) are also true for the non-autonomous equation. This also motivates us to study the analogous fourth-order boundary value problem {u((4)) - cu '' + a(x)u = vertical bar u vertical bar(p-1)u u'(0) = u'''(0) = 0, u(+infinity) = u'(+infinity) = 0 for which we also find nontrivial (and, in some instances, positive) solutions.

Acetylcholine (ACh) has been shown to exert an anti-inflammatory function by down-modulating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Its availability can be regulated at different levels, namely at its synthesis and degradation steps. Accordingly, the expression of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the enzyme responsible for ACh hydrolysis, has been observed to be modulated in inflammation. To further address the mechanisms underlying this effect, we aimed here at characterizing AChE expression in distinct cellular types pivotal to the inflammatory response. This study was performed in the human acute leukaemia monocytyc cell line, THP-1, in human monocyte-derived primary macrophages and in human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). In order to subject these cells to inflammatory conditions, THP-1 and macrophage were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from E.coli and HUVEC were stimulated with the tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α). Our results showed that although AChE expression was generally up-regulated at the mRNA level under inflammatory conditions, distinct AChE protein expression profiles were aurprisingly observed among the distinct cellular types studied. Altogether, these results argue for the existence of cell specific mechanisms that regulate the expression of acetylcholinesterase in inflammation.

TOD (Transit Oriented Development) is typically defined as a high density mixed area (residential and commercial) within easy walking distance of a high capacity public transport station (typically within an 800m buffer area). TOO is viewed as a set of strategies to increase the use of public transport, increasing walking activity, containing urban sprawl, and creating more liveable places. It is believed that this type of combined strategies will improve sustainable growth. This work is an exploratory work for evidence of TOD characteristics in train station areas in Azambuja train line, setting further methodologies to evaluate the success of TOD areas.

The erosion depth profile of planar targets in balanced and unbalanced magnetron cathodes with cylindrical symmetry is measured along the target radius. The magnetic fields have rotational symmetry. The horizontal and vertical components of the magnetic field B are measured at points above the cathode target with z = 2 x 10(-3) m. The experimental data reveal that the target erosion depth profile is a function of the angle. made by B with a horizontal line defined by z = 2 x 10(-3) m. To explain this dependence a simplified model of the discharge is developed. In the scope of the model, the pathway lengths of the secondary electrons in the pre-sheath region are calculated by analytical integration of the Lorentz differential equations. Weighting these lengths by using the distribution law of the mean free path of the secondary electrons, we estimate the densities of the ionizing events over the cathode and the relative flux of the sputtered atoms. The expression so deduced correlates for the first time the erosion depth profile of the target with the angle theta. The model shows reasonably good fittings to the experimental target erosion depth profiles confirming that ionization occurs mainly in the pre-sheath zone.

We study some properties of the monotone solutions of the boundary value problem (p(u'))' - cu' + f(u) = 0, u(-infinity) = 0, u(+infinity) = 1, where f is a continuous function, positive in (0, 1) and taking the value zero at 0 and 1, and P may be an increasing homeomorphism of (0, 1) or (0, +infinity) onto [0, +infinity). This problem arises when we look for travelling waves for the reaction diffusion equation partial derivative u/partial derivative t = partial derivative/partial derivative x [p(partial derivative u/partial derivative x)] + f(u) with the parameter c representing the wave speed. A possible model for the nonlinear diffusion is the relativistic curvature operator p(nu)= nu/root 1-nu(2). The same ideas apply when P is given by the one- dimensional p- Laplacian P(v) = |v|(p-2)v. In this case, an advection term is also considered. We show that, as for the classical Fisher- Kolmogorov- Petrovski- Piskounov equations, there is an interval of admissible speeds c and we give characterisations of the critical speed c. Helicobacter pylori infection represents a serious health problem, given its association with serious gastric diseases as gastric ulcers, cancer and MALT lymphoma. Currently no vaccine exists and antibiotic-based eradication therapy is already failing in more than 20% of cases. To increase the knowledge on the infection process diverse gastric cell lines, e.g. the adenocarcinona gastric (AGS) cell line, are routinely used has in vitro models of gastric epithelia. In the present work the molecular fingerprint of infected and non-infected AGS cell lines, by diverse H. pylori strains, was acquired using vibrational infrared spectroscopy. These molecular fingerprints enabled to discriminate infected from non-infected AGS cells, and infection due to different strains, by performing Principal Component Analysis. It was also possible to estimate, from the AGS cells molecular fingerprint, the effect of the infection on diverse biochemical and metabolic cellular status. In resume infra-red spectroscopy enabled the acquisition of infected AGS cells molecular fingerprint with minimal sample preparation, in a rapid, high-throughput, economic process yielding highly sensitive and informative data, most useful for promoting critical knowledge on the H. pylori infection process. © 2015 IEEE.

The importance of wind power energy for energy and environmental policies has been growing in past recent years. However, because of its random nature over time, the wind generation cannot be reliable dispatched and perfectly forecasted, becoming a challenge when integrating this production in power systems. In addition the wind energy has to cope with the diversity of production resulting from alternative wind power profiles located in different regions. In 2012, Portugal presented a cumulative installed capacity distributed over 223 wind farms [1]. In this work the circular data statistical methods are used to analyze and compare alternative spatial wind generation profiles. Variables indicating extreme situations are analyzed. The hour (s) of the day where the farm production attains its maximum daily production is considered. This variable was converted into circular variable, and the use of circular statistics enables to identify the daily hour distribution for different wind production profiles. This methodology was applied to a real case, considering data from the Portuguese power system regarding the year 2012 with a 15-minutes interval. Six geographical locations were considered, representing different wind generation profiles in the Portuguese system.In this work the circular data statistical methods are used to analyze and compare alternative spatial wind generation profiles.
