Recent literature has proved that many classical pricing models (Black and Scholes, Heston, etc.) and risk measures (V aR, CV aR, etc.) may lead to “pathological meaningless situations”, since traders can build sequences of portfolios whose risk leveltends to −infinity and whose expected return tends to +infinity, i.e., (risk = −infinity, return = +infinity). Such a sequence of strategies may be called “good deal”. This paper focuses on the risk measures V aR and CV aR and analyzes this caveat in a discrete time complete pricing model. Under quite general conditions the explicit expression of a good deal is given, and its sensitivity with respect to some possible measurement errors is provided too. We point out that a critical property is the absence of short sales. In such a case we first construct a “shadow riskless asset” (SRA) without short sales and then the good deal is given by borrowing more and more money so as to invest in the SRA. It is also shown that the SRA is interested by itself, even if there are short selling restrictions.

We define nonautonomous graphs as a class of dynamic graphs in discrete time whose time-dependence consists in connecting or disconnecting edges. We study periodic paths in these graphs, and the associated zeta functions. Based on the analytic properties of these zeta functions we obtain explicit formulae for the number of n-periodic paths, as the sum of the nth powers of some specific algebraic numbers.

This paper extents the by now classic sensor fusion complementary filter (CF) design, involving two sensors, to the case where three sensors that provide measurements in different bands are available. This paper shows that the use of classical CF techniques to tackle a generic three sensors fusion problem, based solely on their frequency domain characteristics, leads to a minimal realization, stable, sub-optimal solution, denoted as Complementary Filters3 (CF3). Then, a new approach for the estimation problem at hand is used, based on optimal linear Kalman filtering techniques. Moreover, the solution is shown to preserve the complementary property, i.e. the sum of the three transfer functions of the respective sensors add up to one, both in continuous and discrete time domains. This new class of filters are denoted as Complementary Kalman Filters3 (CKF3). The attitude estimation of a mobile robot is addressed, based on data from a rate gyroscope, a digital compass, and odometry. The experimental results obtained are reported.

Behavioral biometrics is one of the areas with growing interest within the biosignal research community. A recent trend in the field is ECG-based biometrics, where electrocardiographic (ECG) signals are used as input to the biometric system. Previous work has shown this to be a promising trait, with the potential to serve as a good complement to other existing, and already more established modalities, due to its intrinsic characteristics. In this paper, we propose a system for ECG biometrics centered on signals acquired at the subject's hand. Our work is based on a previously developed custom, non-intrusive sensing apparatus for data acquisition at the hands, and involved the pre-processing of the ECG signals, and evaluation of two classification approaches targeted at real-time or near real-time applications. Preliminary results show that this system leads to competitive results both for authentication and identification, and further validate the potential of ECG signals as a complementary modality in the toolbox of the biometric system designer.

A new method is proposed to control delayed transitions towards extinction in single population theoretical models with discrete time undergoing saddle-node bifurcations. The control method takes advantage of the delaying properties of the saddle remnant arising after the bifurcation, and allows to sustain populations indefinitely. Our method, which is shown to work for deterministic and stochastic systems, could generally be applied to avoid transitions tied to one-dimensional maps after saddle-node bifurcations.

This paper presents a predictive optimal matrix converter controller for a flywheel energy storage system used as Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR). The flywheel energy storage device is based on a steel seamless tube mounted as a vertical axis flywheel to store kinetic energy. The motor/generator is a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine driven by the AC-AC Matrix Converter. The matrix control method uses a discrete-time model of the converter system to predict the expected values of the input and output currents for all the 27 possible vectors generated by the matrix converter. An optimal controller minimizes control errors using a weighted cost functional. The flywheel and control process was tested as a DVR to mitigate voltage sags and swells. Simulation results show that the DVR is able to compensate the critical load voltage without delays, voltage undershoots or overshoots, overcoming the input/output coupling of matrix converters.

O risco associado a um navio em manobra pode ser avaliado pela probabilidade do movimento vertical de um ponto do navio ultrapassar um determinado limiar pré-definido. Essa excedência pode originar danos tanto no próprio navio como nas estruturas portuárias envolventes. Este trabalho surge no seguimento de um estudo efectuado no Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC), no qual foi desenvolvido um conjunto de ferramentas de avaliação da função resposta do navio quando sujeito à agitação marítima e, partindo dessas ferramentas, foi obtido um procedimento para determinação do espectro dos movimentos verticais de um ponto de um navio parado sujeito àquele estado de agitação (Rodrigues, 2010). No presente estudo, estendeu-se esse procedimento de modo a avaliar a influência da velocidade de avanço do navio no espectro dos movimentos verticais do mesmo. O percurso de entrada do “N/M Fernão Gomes” no porto da Praia da Vitória foi o caso de estudo considerado. A agitação marítima incidente no navio cobriu o período de Janeiro de 2009 a Dezembro de 2010 e foi obtida com base no modelo previsão de escala regional (WAVEWATCH III) e posteriormente transferida para o interior do porto com o recurso a modelos numéricos de propagação de ondas (SWAN e DREAMS). Foi também assumido que a altura do movimento vertical do navio segue uma distribuição de Rayleigh, a qual possibilita a determinação da altura significativa desse movimento vertical, bem como a implementação de um procedimento para determinar a probabilidade de a altura do movimento vertical do navio não exceder um limiar pré-definido e consequentemente mostrar, através da análise dos resultados, a influência da velocidade de avanço do navio. Da análise dos resultados concluiu-se que a velocidade tem uma influência significativa nos resultados. No final avaliou-se a contribuição dos resultados anteriormente determinados, para a análise do risco associado aos movimentos verticais do navio quando em manobra no porto em estudo.

The authors extend their earlier work on the stability of a reacting binary polymer blend with respect to demixing [D. J. Read, Macromolecules 31, 899 (1998); P. I. C. Teixeira , Macromolecules 33, 387 (2000)] to the case where one of the polymers is rod-like and may order nematically. As before, the authors combine the random phase approximation for the free energy with a Markov chain model for the chemistry to obtain the spinodal as a function of the relevant degrees of reaction. These are then calculated by assuming a simple second-order chemical kinetics. Results are presented, for linear systems, which illustrate the effects of varying the proportion of coils and rods, their relative sizes, and the strength of the nematic interaction between the rods. This paper is on an onshore variable speed wind turbine with doubly fed induction generator and under supervisory control. The control architecture is equipped with an event-based supervisor for the supervision level and fuzzy proportional integral or discrete adaptive linear quadratic as proposed controllers for the execution level. The supervisory control assesses the operational state of the variable speed wind turbine and sends the state to the execution level. Controllers operation are in the full load region to extract energy at full power from the wind while ensuring safety conditions required to inject the energy into the electric grid. A comparison between the simulations of the proposed controllers with the inclusion of the supervisory control on the variable speed wind turbine benchmark model is presented to assess advantages of these controls. For an interval map, the poles of the Artin-Mazur zeta function provide topological invariants which are closely connected to topological entropy. It is known that for a time-periodic nonautonomous dynamical system F with period p, the p-th power [zeta(F) (z)](p) of its zeta function is meromorphic in the unit disk. Unlike in the autonomous case, where the zeta function zeta(f)(z) only has poles in the unit disk, in the p-periodic nonautonomous case [zeta(F)(z)](p) may have zeros. In this paper we introduce the concept of spectral invariants of p-periodic nonautonomous discrete dynamical systems and study the role played by the zeros of [zeta(F)(z)](p) in this context. As we will see, these zeros play an important role in the spectral classification of these systems.

We introduce the notions of equilibrium distribution and time of convergence in discrete non-autonomous graphs. Under some conditions we give an estimate to the convergence time to the equilibrium distribution using the second largest eigenvalue of some matrices associated with the system.
