Background: Addition of energy supplements to preterm formulas is an optional strategy to increase the energy intake in infants requiring fluid restriction, in conditions like bronchopulmonary dysplasia. This strategy may lead to an undesirable increase in osmolality of feeds, the maximum recommended safe limit being 400 mOsm/kg. The aim of the study was to measure the changes in osmolality of several commercialized preterm formulas after addition of glucose polymers and medium-chain triglycerides. Methods: Osmolality was measured by the freezing point depression method. Six powdered formulas with concentrations of 14 g/100 ml and 16 g/100 ml, and five ready-to-feed liquid formulas were analyzed. All formulas, were supplemented with 10% (low supplementation) or 20% (high supplementation) of additional calories, respectively, in the form of glucose polymers and medium chain triglycerides, maintaining a 1:1 glucose:lipid calorie ratio. Inter-analysis and intra-analysis coefficients of variation of the measurements were always < 3.9%. Results: The mean osmolality (mOsm/kg) of the non-supplemented formulas varied between 268.5 and 315.3 mOsm/kg, increasing by 3–5% in low supplemented formulas, and by 6–10% in high supplemented formulas. None of the formulas analyzed exceeded 352.8 mOsm/kg. Conclusion: The supplementation of preterm formulas with nonprotein energy supplements with up to 20% additional calories did not exceed the maximum recommended osmolality for neonatal feedings.

In this paper we investigate some classes of semigroup rings with respect to (semi)primeness and (semi)primitivity. We do so by extending the techniques developed by Munn in (Proc R Soc Edinbur Sect A 107:175-196, 1987) and (Proc R Soc Edinbur Sect A 115:109-117, 1990) for the study of semigroup rings of inverse semigroups. Restriction, weakly ample and ample semigroups are considered.

We provide all agent; the capability to infer the relations (assertions) entailed by the rules that, describe the formal semantics of art RDFS knowledge-base. The proposed inferencing process formulates each semantic restriction as a rule implemented within a, SPARQL query statement. The process expands the original RDF graph into a fuller graph that. explicitly captures the rule's described semantics. The approach is currently being explored in order to support descriptions that follow the generic Semantic Web Rule Language. An experiment, using the Fire-Brigade domain, a small-scale knowledge-base, is adopted to illustrate the agent modeling method and the inferencing process.

ABSTRACT - Introduction – The Magnetic Resonance (MR) diffusion technique measures the movement of water molecules in tissues. Therefore, it provides useful information about tissue architecture, specially regarding tissue cellularity, cell volume and membrane permeability. The quantification of diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) data is done by measuring the so-called. Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC). This parameter provides additional clinical information about breast lesions, and potentially allows for in-vivo histological characterization. Purpose – To characterize and differentiate breast lesions through ADC analysis. Methodology – The study comprised 20 women, with 23 breast lesions: 3 benign lesions - 3 Fibroadenomas (FA); and 20 malignant - 16 Invasive Ductal Carcinomas (CDI), 2 Ductal Carcinomas In Situ (CDIS), 2 Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (CLI). On a 1.5T equipment a diffusion-weighted sequence with 6 b-values (b=0,50,250,500,750,1000 s/mm2) was used to examine the patients. ADC was obtained by fitting an exponential to data of lesion signal intensity vs. b values. A correspondence of ADC values to histological lesion characterization was done and finally, the results were comparison with the literature. Results and Discussion – Malignant lesions showed inferior ADCs significantly (p=0.014) lower ((0.94±0.22)x10-3 mm2/s) than the benign lesions ((1.43±0.25)x10-3 mm2/s). This may be associated to increasead cellularity in malignant lesions, which result in higher tissue restriction to diffusion. CDI showed low ADC values ((0.88±0.17)x10-3 mm2/s), while the CDIS showed higher ADCs ((1.33±0.29)x10-3 mm2/s). These results agree with the fact that CDIS are limited to mammary ducts, maintaining a less altered neighboring tissue structure, which results in a lower restriction to diffusion than observed in CDI. Significant differences between FA and CDI (p=0.010) and between CDI and CDIS (p=0.049) were observed. Conclusion – The ADC parameter is able to differentiate between malignant and benign breast lesions, as well as between some histological types.

Background & aims: Crohn’s disease (CD) is a multifactorial disease where resistance to apoptosis is one major defect. Also, dietary fat intake has been shown to modulate disease activity. We aimed to explore the interaction between four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in apoptotic genes and dietary fat intake in modulating disease activity in CD patients. Methods: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) techniques were used to analyze Caspase9þ93C/T, FasLigand-843C/T, Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor gammaþ161C/T and Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor gamma Pro12Ala SNPs in 99 patients with CD and 116 healthy controls. Interactions between SNPs and fat intake in modulating disease activity were analyzed using regression analysis. Results: None of the polymorphisms analyzed influenced disease susceptibility and/or activity, but a high intake of total, saturated and monounsaturated fats and a higher ratio of n-6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), was associated with a more active phenotype (p < 0.05). We observed that the detrimental effect of a high intake of total and trans fat was more marked in wild type carriers of the Caspase9þ93C/T polymorphism [O.R (95%CI) 4.64 (1.27e16.89) and O.R (95%CI) 4.84 (1.34e17.50)]. In the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor gamma Pro12Ala SNP, we also observed that a high intake of saturated and monounsaturated fat was associated to a more active disease in wild type carriers [OR (95%CI) 4.21 (1.33e13.26) and 4.37 (1.52e12.51)]. Finally, a high intake of n-6 PUFA was associated with a more active disease in wild type carriers for the FasLigand-843C/T polymorphism [O.R (95%CI) 5.15 (1.07e24.74)]. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study to disclose a synergism between fat intake and SNPs in apoptotic genes in modulating disease activity in CD patients.

We report the nucleotide sequence of a 17,893 bp DNA segment from the right arm of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome VII. This fragment begins at 482 kb from the centromere. The sequence includes the BRF1 gene, encoding TFIIIB70, the 5' portion of the GCN5 gene, an open reading frame (ORF) previously identified as ORF MGA1, whose translation product shows similarity to heat-shock transcription factors and five new ORFs. Among these, YGR250 encodes a polypeptide that harbours a domain present in several polyA binding proteins. YGR245 is similar to a putative Schizosaccharomyces pombe gene, YGR248 shows significant similarity with three ORFs of S. cerevisiae situated on different chromosomes, while the remaining two ORFs, YGR247 and YGR251, do not show significant similarity to sequences present in databases.

A 9.9 kb DNA fragment from the right arm of chromosome VII of Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been sequenced and analysed. The sequence contains four open reading frames (ORFs) longer than 100 amino acids. One gene, PFK1, has already been cloned and sequenced and the other one is the probable yeast gene coding for the beta-subunit of the succinyl-CoA synthetase. The two remaining ORFs share homology with the deduced amino acid sequence (and their physical arrangement is similar to that) of the YHR161c and YHR162w ORFs from chromosome VIII.

Deste modo, a avaliação biométrica fetal é fundamental no diagnóstico pré-natal do desenvolvimento cerebral.

This paper presents a case study of heat exchanger network (HEN) retrofit with the objective to reduce the utilities consumption in a biodiesel production process. Pinch analysis studies allow determining the minimum duty utilities as well the maximum of heat recovery. The existence of heat exchangers for heat recovery already running in the process causes a serious restriction for the implementation of grassroot HEN design based on pinch studies. Maintaining the existing HEN, a set of alternatives with additional heat exchangers was created and analysed using some industrial advice and selection criteria. The final proposed solution allows to increase the actual 18 % of recovery heat of the all heating needs of the process to 23 %, with an estimated annual saving in hot utility of 35 k(sic)/y.
