The application of a-SiC:H/a-Si:H pinpin photodiodes for optoelectronic applications as a WDM demultiplexer device has been demonstrated useful in optical communications that use the WDM technique to encode multiple signals in the visible light range. This is required in short range optical communication applications, where for costs reasons the link is provided by Plastic Optical Fibers. Characterization of these devices has shown the presence of large photocapacitive effects. By superimposing background illumination to the pulsed channel the device behaves as a filter, producing signal attenuation, or as an amplifier, producing signal gain, depending on the channel/background wavelength combination. We present here results, obtained by numerical simulations, about the internal electric configuration of a-SiC:H/a-Si:H pinpin photodiode. These results address the explanation of the device functioning in the frequency domain to a wavelength tunable photo-capacitance due to the accumulation of space charge localized at the bottom diode that, according to the Shockley-Read-Hall model, it is mainly due to defect trapping. Experimental result about measurement of the photodiode capacitance under different conditions of illumination and applied bias will be also presented. The combination of these analyses permits the description of a wavelength controlled photo-capacitance that combined with the series and parallel resistance of the diodes may result in the explicit definition of cut off frequencies for frequency capacitive filters activated by the light background or an oscillatory resonance of photogenerated carriers between the two diodes. Combined tunable WDM converters based on SiC multilayer photonic active filters are analyzed. The operation combines the properties of active long-pass and short-pass wavelength filter sections into a capacitive active band-pass filter. The sensor element is a multilayered heterostructure produced by PE-CVD. The configuration includes two stacked SiC p-i-n structures sandwiched between two transparent contacts. Transfer function characteristics are studied both theoretically and experimentally. Results show that optical bias activated photonic device combines the demultiplexing operation with the simultaneous photodetection and self amplification of an optical signal acting the device as an integrated photonic filter in the visible range. Depending on the wavelength of the external background and irradiation side, the device acts either as a short- or a long-pass band filter or as a band-stop filter. The output waveform presents a nonlinear amplitude-dependent response to the wavelengths of the input channels. A numerical simulation and a two building-blocks active circuit are presented and give insight into the physics of the device. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

: In this work we derive an analytical solution given by Bessel series to the transient and one-dimensional (1D) bioheat transfer equation in a multi-layer region with spatially dependent heat sources. Each region represents an independent biological tissue characterized by temperature-invariant physiological parameters and a linearly temperature dependent metabolic heat generation. Moreover, 1D Cartesian, cylindrical or spherical coordinates are used to define the geometry and temperature boundary conditions of first, second and third kinds are assumed at the inner and outer surfaces. We present two examples of clinical applications for the developed solution. In the first one, we investigate two different heat source terms to simulate the heating in a tumor and its surrounding tissue, induced during a magnetic fluid hyperthermia technique used for cancer treatment. To obtain an accurate analytical solution, we determine the error associated with the truncated Bessel series that defines the transient solution. In the second application, we explore the potential of this model to study the effect of different environmental conditions in a multi-layered human head model (brain, bone and scalp). The convective heat transfer effect of a large blood vessel located inside the brain is also investigated. The results are further compared with a numerical solution obtained by the Finite Element Method and computed with COMSOL Multi-physics v4.1 (c). (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In a heterogeneous cellular networks environment, users behaviour and network deployment configuration parameters have an impact on the overall Quality of Service. This paper proposes a new and simple model that, on the one hand, explores the users behaviour impact on the network by having mobility, multi-service usage and traffic generation profiles as inputs, and on the other, enables the network setup configuration evaluation impact on the Joint Radio Resource Management (JRRM), assessing some basic JRRM performance indicators, like Vertical Handover (VHO) probabilities, average bit rates, and number of active users, among others. VHO plays an important role in fulfilling seamless users sessions transfer when mobile terminals cross different Radio Access Technologies (RATs) boundaries. Results show that high bit rate RATs suffer and generate more influence from/on other RATs, by producing additional signalling traffic to a JRRM entity. Results also show that the VHOs probability can range from 5 up to 65%, depending on RATs cluster radius and users mobility profile.

Thin films consisting of 3 or 4 Sb and Ge alternating layers are irradiated with single nanosecond laser pulses (12 ns, 193 nm). Real time reflectivity (RTR) measurements are performed during irradiation, and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) is used to obtain the concentration depth profiles before and after irradiation. Interdiffusion of the elements takes place at the layer interfaces within the liquid phase. The reflectivity transients allow to determine the laser energy thresholds both to induce and to saturate the process being both thresholds dependent on the multilayer configuration. It is found that the energy threshold to initiate the process is lower when Sb is at the surface while the saturation is reached at lower energy densities in those configurations with thinner layers.

Nos últimos vinte e cinco anos o tema da autonomia e da administração e gestão escolar tem ocupado um lugar relevante na agenda política dos sucessivos Governos da República e na preocupação dos diferentes parceiros educativos. Rara tem sido a maioria política que resiste a dar o seu contributo sobre esta matéria, com o objetivo sempre confesso de outorgar maior autonomia às escolas. No enquadramento teórico da nossa investigação começamos por abordar a emergência do conceito de autonomia, nas suas diferentes dimensões e nos seus distintos significados. Não esquecemos também a analise das questões relacionadas com a problemática, cada vez mais atual da regulação múltipla. Analisamos de seguida a evolução da legislação portuguesa, operada a partir da publicação da Lei de Bases do Sistema Educativo com especial destaque às propostas de configuração dos órgãos de Direção e de Gestão das escolas e das competências atribuídas a cada um deles produzido pela CRSE e pelos decretos-leis 43/89, 172/91, 115-A/98 e 75/2008. A investigação empírica teve como objeto de análise dois agrupamentos localizados em concelhos distintos da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, e procurou determinar se o conselho geral de cada uma dessas unidades orgânicas, assume na totalidade as competências que lhe são conferidas pelo quadro legislativo em vigor, e nessa medida como se articula com os outros órgãos da direção no processo de tomada de decisão. Simultaneamente fizemos o contraponto com a imagem que os intervenientes na gestão intermédia de cada um dos agrupamentos construíram sobre o seu conselho geral e das relações de poder que se estabelecem no interior de cada uma das organizações. Para corresponder aos pressupostos da nossa investigação entrevistaram-se os diretores e os presidentes dos conselhos gerais e facultámos questionários aos docentes que desempenhavam cargos nos dois agrupamentos. Concluímos, em função do que pudemos analisar, que embora o conselho geral veja o seu papel na organização da escola formalmente reconhecido não consegue desempenhar na totalidade as funções que lhe são incumbidas, já que defronta o poder real do diretor e o poder oculto do conselho pedagógico, encontrando dificuldades em libertar-se do reino das sombras.

When a mixture is confined, one of the phases can condense out. This condensate, which is otherwise metastable in the bulk, is stabilized by the presence of surfaces. In a sphere-plane geometry, routinely used in atomic force microscope and surface force apparatus, it, can form a bridge connecting the surfaces. The pressure drop in the bridge gives rise to additional long-range attractive forces between them. By minimizing the free energy of a binary mixture we obtain the force-distance curves as well as the structural phase diagram of the configuration with the bridge. Numerical results predict a discontinuous transition between the states with and without the bridge and linear force-distance curves with hysteresis. We also show that similar phenomenon can be observed in a number of different systems, e.g., liquid crystals and polymer mixtures. (C). 2004 American Institute of Physics.

We use a two-dimensional (2D) elastic free energy to calculate the effective interaction between two circular disks immersed in smectic-C films. For strong homeotropic anchoring, the distortion of the director field caused by the disks generates topological defects that induce an effective interaction between the disks. We use finite elements, with adaptive meshing, to minimize the 2D elastic free energy. The method is shown to be accurate and efficient for inhomogeneities on the length scales set by the disks and the defects, that differ by up to 3 orders of magnitude. We compute the effective interaction between two disk-defect pairs in a simple (linear) configuration. For large disk separations, D, the elastic free energy scales as similar to D-2, confirming the dipolar character of the long-range effective interaction. For small D the energy exhibits a pronounced minimum. The lowest energy corresponds to a symmetrical configuration of the disk-defect pairs, with the inner defect at the mid-point between the disks. The disks are separated by a distance that, is twice the distance of the outer defect from the nearest disk. The latter is identical to the equilibrium distance of a defect nucleated by an isolated disk.

The interaction between two disks immersed in a 2D nernatic is investigated i) analytically using the tenser order parameter formalism for the nematic configuration around isolated disks and ii) numerically using finite-element methods with adaptive meshing to minimize the corresponding Landau-de Gennes free energy. For strong homeotropic anchoring, each disk generates a pair of defects with one-half topological charge responsible for the 2D quadrupolar interaction between the disks at large distances. At short distance, the position of the defects may change, leading to unexpected complex interactions with the quadrupolar repulsive interactions becoming attractive. This short-range attraction in all directions is still anisotropic. As the distance between the disks decreases, their preferred relative orientation with respect to the far-field nernatic director changes from oblique to perpendicular.
