Titanate nanotubes (TiNTs) were obtained by hydrothermal treatment of anatase powder in aqueous NaOH solution and then modified with 2,9,16,23-tertracarboxyl phthalocyanine copper(H) (CuPc). This hybrid organic inorganic nanoscopic system was characterized by X-ray diffraction, microscopy, and spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of pure and modified TiNTs revealed multiwall structures with an average outer diameter of 9 nm and a length of several hundred nanometers. The tubular morphology of the TiNTs was covered with CuPc-film. The amount of CuPc adsorbed onto the TiNTs was quantified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Using the same technique and spin-trapping methodology, the photogeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the TiNTs was systematically investigated. A drastic quenching of photoactivity was observed in the CuPc/TiNT hybrid system. Electron transfer from excited CuPc states to the TiNT conduction band followed by electron recombination may be the cause of this quenching.

In about 50% of first trimester spontaneous abortion the cause remains undetermined after standard cytogenetic investigation. We evaluated the usefulness of array-CGH in diagnosing chromosome abnormalities in products of conception from first trimester spontaneous abortions. Cell culture was carried out in short- and long-term cultures of 54 specimens and cytogenetic analysis was successful in 49 of them. Cytogenetic abnormalities (numerical and structural) were detected in 22 (44.89%) specimens. Subsequent, array-CGH based on large insert clones spaced at ~1 Mb intervals over the whole genome was used in 17 cases with normal G-banding karyotype. This revealed chromosome aneuplodies in three additional cases, giving a final total of 51% cases in which an abnormal karyotype was detected. In keeping with other recently published works, this study shows that array-CGH detects abnormalities in a further ~10% of spontaneous abortion specimens considered to be normal using standard cytogenetic methods. As such, array-CGH technique may present a suitable complementary test to cytogenetic analysis in cases with a normal karyotype.

The photocatalytic degradation of phenol in aqueous suspensions of TiO2 under different salt concentrations in an annular reactor has been investigated. In all cases, complete removal of phenol and mineralization degrees above 90% were achieved. The reactor operational parameters were optimized and its hydrodynamics characterized in order to couple mass balance equations with kinetic ones. The photodegradation of the organics followed a Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson lumped kinetics. From GC/MS analyses, several intermediates formed during oxidation have been identified. The main ones were catechol, hydroquinone, and 3-phenyl-2-propenal, in this order. The formation of negligible concentrations of 4-chlorophenol was observed only in high salinity medium. Acute toxicity was determined by using Artemia sp. as the test organism, which indicated that intermediate products were all less toxic than phenol and a significant abatement of the overall toxicity was accomplished, regardless of the salt concentration.

We show that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with high density of defects can present a strong electronic interaction with nanoparticles of Pt-Ru with average particle size of 3.5 +/- 0.8 nm. Depending on the Pt-Ru loading on the CNTs, CO and methanol oxidation reactions suggest there is a charge transfer between Pt-Ru that in turn provokes a decrease in the electronic interaction taking place between Ru and Pt in the PtRu alloy. The CO stripping potentials were observed at about 0.65 and 0.5 V for Pt-Ru/CNT electrodes with Pt-Ru loadings of 10 and 20, and 30 wt %, respectively. (C) 2008 The Electrochemical Society. In this work, the electron field emission behaviour of electrodes formed by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown onto monolithic vitreous carbon (VCarbon) substrates with microcavities is presented. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the microstructure of the films. Tungsten probes, stainless steel sphere, and phosphor electrodes were employed in the electron field emission study. The CNT/VCarbon composite represents a route to inexpensive excellent large area electron emission cathodes with fields as low as 2.1 V mu m(-1). In preliminary lifetime tests for a period of about 24 h at an emission current of about 4 mA cm(-2), there is an onset degradation of the emission current of about 28%, which then stabilizes. Electron emission images of the composites show the cavity of the samples act as separate emission sites and predominantly control the emission process. The emission of CNTs/VCarbon was found to be stable for several hours. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We have modeled, fabricated, and characterized superhydrophobic surfaces with a morphology formed of periodic microstructures which are cavities. This surface morphology is the inverse of that generally reported in the literature when the surface is formed of pillars or protrusions, and has the advantage that when immersed in water the confined air inside the cavities tends to expel the invading water. This differs from the case of a surface morphology formed of pillars or protrusions, for which water can penetrate irreversibly among the microstructures, necessitating complete drying of the surface in order to again recover its superhydrophobic character. We have developed a theoretical model that allows calculation of the microcavity dimensions needed to obtain superhydrophobic surfaces composed of patterns of such microcavities, and that provides estimates of the advancing and receding contact angle as a function of microcavity parameters. The model predicts that the cavity aspect ratio (depth-to-diameter ratio) can be much less than unity, indicating that the microcavities do not need to be deep in order to obtain a surface with enhanced superhydrophobic character. Specific microcavity patterns have been fabricated in polydimethylsiloxane and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle measurements. The measured advancing and receding contact angles are in good agreement with the predictions of the model. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3466979]

We report a highly efficient switch built from an organic molecule assembled between single-wall carbon nanotube electrodes. We theoretically show that changes in the distance between the electrodes alter the molecular conformation within the gap, affecting in a dramatic way the electronic and charge transport properties, with an on/off ratio larger than 300. This opens up the perspective of combining molecular electronics with carbon nanotubes, bringing great possibilities for the design of nanodevices.

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes can provide reactive sites on the porphyrin-like defects. It is well known that many porphyrins have transition-metal atoms, and we have explored transition-metal atoms bonded to those porphyrin-like defects inN-doped carbon nanotubes. The electronic structure and transport are analyzed by means of a combination of density functional theory and recursive Green's function methods. The results determined the heme B-like defect (an iron atom bonded to four nitrogens) is the most stable and has a higher polarization current for a single defect. With randomly positioned heme B defects in nanotubes a few hundred nanometers long, the polarization reaches near 100%, meaning they are effective spin filters. A disorder-induced magnetoresistance effect is also observed in those long nanotubes, and values as high as 20 000% are calculated with nonmagnectic eletrodes.

We present density of states and electronic transport calculations of single vacancies in carbon nanotubes. We confirm that the defect reconstructs into a pentagon and a nonagon, following the removal of a single carbon atom. This leads to the formation of a dangling bond. Finally, we demonstrate that care must be taken when calculating the density of states of impurities in one-dimensional systems in general. Traditional treatments of these systems using periodic boundary conditions leads to the formation of minigaps even in the limit of large unit cells.

The adsorption of atomic and molecular hydrogen on armchair and zigzag boron carbonitride nanotubes is investigated within the ab initio density functional theory. The adsorption of atomic H on the BC(2)N nanotubes presents properties which are promising for nanoelectronic applications. Depending on the adsorption site for the H, the Fermi energy moves toward the bottom of the conduction band or toward the top of the valence band, leading the system to exhibit donor or acceptor characteristics, respectively. The H(2) molecules are physisorbed on the BC(2)N surface for both chiralities. The binding energies for the H(2) molecules are slightly dependent on the adsorption site, and they are near to the range to work as a hydrogen storage medium.

We report on some unusual behavior of the measured current-voltage characteristics (CVC) in artificially prepared two-dimensional unshunted array of overdamped Nb-AlO(x)-Nb Josephson junctions. The obtained nonlinear CVC are found to exhibit a pronounced (and practically temperature independent) crossover at some current I(cr) = (1/2 beta(C)-1)I(C) from a resistance R dominated state with V(R)=R root I(2)-I(C)(2) below I(cr) to a capacitance C dominated state with V(C) = root(h) over bar /4eC root I-I(C) above I(cr). The origin of the observed behavior is discussed within a single-plaquette approximation assuming the conventional resistively shunted junction model with a finite capacitance and the Ambegaokar-Baratoff relation for the critical current of the single junction. This paper presents the fabrication of a nanothick Co-modified film electrochemically synthesized on layer-by-layer (LbL) structures made with dendrimer polyamidoamine/carbon nanotubes (PAMAM/CNT), and its electrocatalytic properties toward H(2)O(2) reduction. Scanning electron microscopy indicated the formation of a homogeneous, 14 nm thick Co film. The porous nature of the PAMAM/CNT LbL film allowed the electrolyte access to the bottom of the electrode, generating a homogenous Co electrodeposit. In addition, the nanostructure based on Co-modified PAMAM/CNT LbL exhibited high electrocatalytic activity for H(2)O(2) reduction when compared to the Co-free PAMAM/CNT LbL film, which demonstrates the suitability of the system studied for biosensing. In this work we present a complete characterization and magnetic study of vanadium oxide/hexadecylamine nanotubes (VO(x)/Hexa NT's) doped with Co(2)+ and Ni(2+) ions. The morphology of the NT's has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, while the metallic elements have been quantified by the instrumental neutron activation analysis technique. The static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied by collecting data of magnetization as a function of magnetic field and temperature and by electron paramagnetic resonance. At difference of the majority reports in the literature, we do not observe magnetic dimers in vanadium oxide nanotubes. Also, we observed that the incorporation of metallic ions (Co(2+), S = 3/2 and Ni(2+), S = 1) decreases notably the amount of V(4+) ions in the system, from 14-16% (nondoped case) to 2%-4%, with respect to the total vanadium atoms (fact corroborated by XPS experiments) anyway preserving the tubular nanostructure. The method to decrease the amount of V(4+) in the nanotubes improves considerably their potential technological applications as Li-ion batteries cathodes. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Catalytic ozonation has been recognized in the scientific community as an efficient technique, reaching elevated rates of recalcitrant organic material mineralization, even at the presence of scavenger species of hydroxyl free radicals. This study presents the most significant factors involving the leachate treatment stabilized by the municipal landfill of the city of Guaratingueta, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, by using a catalytic ozonation activated by metallic ions Fe(3+), Zn(2+), Mn(2+), Ni(2+) and Cr(3+). The Taguchi L(16) orthogonal array and its associated statistical methods were also used in this study. Among the researched ions, the most notable catalysis was obtained with ferric ion, statistically significant in the reduction of COD with a confidence level of 99.5%.

This technical note develops information filter and array algorithms for a linear minimum mean square error estimator of discrete-time Markovian jump linear systems. A numerical example for a two-mode Markovian jump linear system, to show the advantage of using array algorithms to filter this class of systems, is provided.
