The anionic complexes [Cu(L(1-))(3)](1-), L(-) = dopasemiquinone or L-dopasemiqui none, were prepared and characterized. The complexes are stable in aqueous solution showing intense absorption bands at ca. 605 nm for Cu(II)-L-dopasemiquinone and at ca. 595 nm for Cu(II)-dopasemiquinone in the UV-vis spectra, that can be assigned to intraligand transitions. Noradrenaline and adrenaline, under the same reaction conditions, did not yield Cu-complexes, despite the bands in the UV region showing that noradrenaline and adrenaline were oxidized during the process. The complexes display a resonance Raman effect, and the most enhanced bands involve ring modes and particularly the vCC + vCO stretching mode at ca. 1384 cm(-1). The free radical nature of the ligands and the oxidation state of the Cu(II) were confirmed by the EPR spectra that display absorptions assigned to organic radicals with g= 2.0005 and g = 2.0923, and for Cu(II) with g = 2.008 and g = 2.0897 for L-dopasemiquinone and dopasemiquinone, respectively. The possibility that dopamine and L-dopa can form stable and aqueous-soluble copper complexes at neutral pH, whereas noradrenaline and adrenaline cannot, may be important in understanding how Cu(II)-dopamine crosses the cellular membrane as proposed in the literature to explain the role of copper in Wilson disease. Two techniques, namely UV-vis- and FTIR spectroscopy, have been employed in order to calculate the degree of substitution (DS) of cellulose carboxylic esters, including acetates, CAs, butyrates, CBs, and hexanoates, CHs. Regarding UV-vis spectroscopy, we have employed a novel approach, based on measuring the dependence of lambda(max) of the intra-molecular charge-transfer bands of polarity probes adsorbed on DS of the ester films (solvatochromism). Additionally, we have revisited the use of FTIR for DS determination. Several methods have been used in order to plot Beer`s law graph, namely: Absorption of KBr pellets, pre-coated with CA: reflectance (DRIFTS) of CAs-KBr solid-solid mixtures with, or without the use of 1.4-dicyanobenzene as an internal reference; reflectance of KBr powder pre-coated with CA. The methods indicated are simple, fast, and accurate, requiring much less ester than the titration method. The probe method is independent of the experimental variables examined. Reversed chloroquine (RCQ) is a multiple ligand compound active against chloroquine-sensitive and resistant falciparum malaria. It is composed by a 4-aminoquinoline moiety (like that present in chloroquine (CQ)) joined to imipramine (IMP), a modulating agent that also showed intrinsic antiplasmodial activity against Brazilian Plasmodium falciparum isolates resistant to CQ. Molecular modeling and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) studies strongly suggest that the interaction between RCQ and heme is predominant through the quinoline moiety in a mechanism of action similar to that observed for CQ. A combined and sequential Monte Carlo-quantum mechanics methodology is used to describe the electronic absorption spectrum of the fluorescein dianion in water. Different sets of 100 statistically relevant configurations composed of the solute and several solvent molecules are sampled from the Monte Carlo simulation for a posteriori quantum mechanical calculations of the spectra. In the largest case the configurations are composed of fluorescein and 90 explicit water molecules embedded in the electrostatic field of all remaining water molecules within a distance of 11.3 angstrom. These configurations include 305 atoms and 842 valence electrons, justifying the use of a semi-empirical approach. The electronic spectrum is then calculated using the INDO/CIS method. The solvatochromic shift of fluorescein in water, compared with in isolation, is calculated using the discrete and explicit solvent models. The use of electrostatically embedded explicit water molecules, in INDO/CIS calculations, gives a good description of the spectral shift of the fluorescein dianion in aqueous environment. The results are verified to converge both statistically and with respect to the number of explicit solvent molecules used.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), circular dichroism (CD), difference spectroscopy (UV-vis), Raman spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements have been performed in the present work to provide a quantitatively comprehensive physicochemical description of the complexation between bovine fibrinogen and the sodium perfluorooctanoate, sodium octanoate, and sodium dodecanoate in glycine buffer (pH 8.5). It has been found that sodium octanoate and dodecanoate act as fibrinogen destabilizer. Meanwhile, sodium perfluorooctanoate acts as a structure stabilizer at low molar concentration and as a destabilizer at high molar concentration. Fibrinogen`s secondary structure is affected by all three studied surfactants (decrease in alpha-helix and an increase in beta-sheet content) to a different extent. DSC and UV-vis revealed the existence of intermediate states in the thermal unfolding process of fibrinogen. In addition, SAXS data analysis showed that pure fibrinogen adopts a paired-dimer structure in solution. Such a structure is unaltered by sodium octanoate and perfluoroctanoate. However, interaction of sodium dodecanoate with the fibrinogen affects the protein conformation leading to a complex formation. Taken together, all results evidence that both surfactant hydrophobicity and tail length mediate the fibrinogen stability upon interaction. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Optical Properties and Charge-Transfer Excitations in Edge-Functionalized All-Graphene Nanojunctions
Resumo:
We investigate the optical properties of edge-fiinctionalized graphene nanosystems, focusing on the formation of junctions and charge-transfer excitons. We consider a class of graphene structures that combine the main electronic features of graphene with the wide tunability of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. By investigating prototypical ribbon-like systems, we show that, upon convenient choice of functional groups, low-energy excitations with remarkable charge-transfer character and large oscillator strength are obtained. These properties can be further modulated through an appropriate width variation, thus spanning a wide range in the low-energy region of the UV-vis spectra. Our results are relevant in view of designing all-graphene optoelectronic nanodevices, which take advantage of the versatility of molecular functionalization, together with the stability and the electronic properties of graphene nanostructures.

Barium molybdate (BaMoO(4)) powders were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and processed in microwave-hydrothermal at 140 degrees C for different times. These powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopies and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and FT-Raman spectra showed that these powders present a scheelite-type tetragonal structure without the presence of deleterious phases. FT-IR spectra exhibited a large absorption band situated at around 850.4 cm(-1), which is associated to the Mo-O antisymmetric stretching vibrations into the [MoO(4)] clusters. UV-vis absorption spectra indicated a reduction in the intermediary energy levels within band gap with the processing time evolution. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory were employed in order to understand the electronic structure (band structure and density of states) of this material. The powders when excited with different wavelengths (350 nm and 488 nm) presented variations. This phenomenon was explained through a model based in the presence of intermediary energy levels (deep and shallow holes) within the band gap. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this communication, we report on the formation of calcium hexahydroxodizincate dehydrate, CaZn(2)(OH)(6)center dot 2H(2)O (CZO) powders under microwave-hydrothermal (MH) conditions. These powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field-emission gum scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns confirmed that the pure CZO phase was obtained after MH processing performed at 130 degrees C for 2 h. FEG-SEM micrographs indicated that the morphological modifications as well as the growth of CZO microparticles are governed by Ostwald-ripening and coalescence mechanisms. UV-vis spectra showed that this material have an indirect optical band gap. The pure CZO powders exhibited an yellow PL emission when excited by 350 nm wavelength at room temperature. The corrosion resistance of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V was investigated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS, potentiodynamic polarisation curves and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The tests were done in Hank solution at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C. The EIS measurements were done at the open circuit potential at specific immersion times. An increase of the resistance as a function of the immersion time was observed, for Ti (at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C), and for Ti-6Al-4V (at 25 degrees C), which was interpreted as the formation and growth of a passive film on the metallic surfaces. In this work, Ba(Zr(0.25)Ti(0.75))O(3) ceramic was prepared by solid-state reaction. This material was characterized by x-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy. The temperature dependent dielectric properties were investigated in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. The dielectric measurements indicated a diffuse phase transition. The broadening of the dielectric permittivity in the frequency range as well as its shifting at higher temperatures indicated a relaxor-like behaviour for this material. The diffusivity and the relaxation strength were estimated using the modified Curie-Weiss law. The optical properties were analysed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements at room temperature. The UV-vis spectrum indicated that the Ba(Zr(0.25)Ti(0.75))O(3) ceramic has an optical band gap of 2.98 eV. A blue PL emission was observed for this compound when excited with 350 nm wavelength. The polarity as well as the PL property of this material was attributed to the presence of polar [TiO(6)] distorted clusters into a globally cubic matrix.

PbMoO(4) micro-octahedrons were prepared by the coprecipitation method at room temperature without the presence of surfactants and processed in a conventional hydrothermal at different temperatures (from 60 to 120 degrees C) for 10 min. These micro-octahedrons were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman (MR) spectroscopy, and its morphology was investigated by field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM). The optical properties were analyzed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and MR spectra confirmed that the PbMoO(4) micro-octahedrons are characterized by a scheelite-type tetragonal structure. FEG-SEM micrographs points, out that these structures present a polydisperse particle size distribution in consequence of a predominant growth mechanism via aggregation of particles. In addition, it was observed that the hydrothermal conditions favored a spontaneous formation of micro-octahedrons interconnected along a common crystallographic orientation (oriented-attachment), resulting in self-organized structures. An intense blue PL emission at room temperature was observed in these micro-octahedrons when they were excited with a 350 nm wavelength. The origin of the PL emissions as well as its intensity variations are explained by means of a model based on both distorted [MoO(4)] and [PbO(8)] clusters into the lattice.

Nanostructural beta-nickel hydroxide (beta-Ni(OH)(2)) plates were prepared using the microwave hydrothermal (MH) method at a low temperature and short reaction times. An ammonia solution was employed as the coordinating agent, which reacts with [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) to control the growth of beta-Ni(OH)(2) nuclei. A trigonal beta-Ni(OH)(2) single phase was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and the crystal cell was constructed with structural parameters and atomic coordinates obtained from Rietveld refinement. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images revealed that the samples consisted of hexagonal-shaped nanoplates with a different particle size distribution. Broad absorption bands assigned as transitions of Ni(2+) in oxygen octahedral sites were revealed by UV-vis spectra. Photoluminescence (PL) properties observed with a maximum peak centered in the blue-green region were attributed to different defects, which were produced during the nucleation process. We present a growth process scheme of the beta-Ni(OH)(2) nanoplates. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The adsorption kinetics curves of poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT), a poly-p-phenylenevinylene (PPV) precursor, and the sodium salt of dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBS), onto (PTHT/DBS)(n) layer-by-layer (LBL) films were characterized by means of UV-vis spectroscopy. The amount of PTHT/DBS and PTHT adsorbed on each layer was shown to be practically independent of adsorption time. A Langmuir-type metastable equilibrium model was used to adjust the adsorption isotherms data and to estimate adsorption/desorption coefficients ratios, k = k(ads)/k(des), values of 2 x 10(5) and 4 x 10(6) for PTHT and PTHT/DBS layers, respectively. The desorption coefficient has been estimated, using literature values for poly(o-methoxyaniline) desorption coefficient, as was found to be in the range of 10(-9) to 10(-6) s(-1), indicating that quasi equilibrium is rapidly attained.

Periodic first-principles calculations based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level has been carried out to investigate the photoluminescence (PL) emission of BaZrO(3) assembled nanoparticles at room temperature. The defect created in the nanocrystals and their resultant electronic features lead to a diversification of electronic recombination within the BaZrO(3) band gap. Its optical phenomena are discussed in the light of photoluminescence emission at the green-yellow region around 570 nm. The theoretical model for displaced atoms and/or angular changes leads to the breaking of the local symmetry, which is based on the refined structure provided by Rietveld methodology. For each situation a band structure, charge mapping, and density of states were built and analyzed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, UV-vis measurements, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images are essential for a full evaluation of the crystal structure and morphology.

The use of natural substances in health applications may be hampered by the difficulties in establishing the mechanisms of action, especially at molecular-level. The protein-polysaccharide complex extracted from the mushroom Agaricus blazei Murill, referred to as CAb, has been considered for treating various diseases with probable interaction with cell membranes. In this study, we investigate the interaction between CAb and a cell membrane model represented by a Langmuir monolayer of dimyristoyl phosphatidic acid (DMPA). CAb affects the structural properties of DMPA monolayers causing expansion and increasing compressibility. In addition, interaction with DMPA polar heads led to neutralization of the electrical double layer, yielding a zero surface potential at large areas per molecule. CAb remained at the interface even at high surface pressures, which allowed transfer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films onto solid supports with the CAb-DMPA mixture. The mass transferred, according to quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements, increased linearly with the number of deposited layers. With UV-vis absorption, fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopies, we confirmed that the LB films contain polysaccharides, proteins and DMPA. Therefore, the CAb biological action must be attributed not only to polysaccharides but also to proteins in the complex. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
