The possible ways for glycine oligopeptide formation in gas phase, both in the extended P-strand like conformation and folded 2(7)-ribbon like conformations are analyzed using quantum chemical calculations. We focus on the sequential formation of peptide bond through upgradation of the immediate lower order molecule and observe the consequences in other related processes like oligoglycine formation through simultaneous peptide linkage of n glycine monomers and interchange of molecular conformation through peptide linkage. A comparison is made between the structures and binding energies obtained for both conformers. All binding energies are increased by the zero-point energy contribution. The role of electron correlation effects is briefly analyzed. The folded 2(7)-ribbon-like conformations in vacuo are found to be more stable in comparison to the extended structure. The biological effects of chemical substitution of DNA bases triggered several investigations of their physicochemical properties This paper studies the adsorption behavior of a halogenated uracil, 5-fluorouracil (5FU). at the electrochemical interface of Au(111) and sulfuric acid solution. Upon modulation of the electric field across the interface, four distinct phases could be inferred by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) At negative potentials relative to the SCE electrode, limited by the threshold of hydrogen evolution, no molecular species could be detected by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the reconstructed Au(111)-(23 x root 3) surface, indicating that any physisorbed molecules are randomly distributed Incursion into more positive potentials increases the surface population but doer not form any two-dimensional (2D) physisorbed ordered structure Instead, we observed metastable structures that are only detectable. on surfaces with high defect density At sufficiently high positive potentials. limited by gold oxidation, the molecules are chemisorbed in a (3 x 2 root 3) ordered structure. with the aromatic ring perpendicular to the surface We report the densest chemisorbed monolayer for pyrimidine-derivative molecules (area per molecule 0 14 +/- 0 04 nm(2)). A comparison of the adsorption behavior of uracil derivatives has been made based on recent results of chemical substitution and solvent effects. We propose that pi-stacking is enhanced when halogens are incorporated in the uracil structure, in a similar fashion to what is observed in then crystal structure

The alkaline earth tricyanomethanides Mg(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O, Ca(tcm)(2), Sr(tcm)(2) - H2O and Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O were prepared from aqueous solutions of the respective chlorides and silver tricyanomethanide. Their IR spectra and thermal behavior are described. The crystal structures of Ca(tcm)(2) and Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of Ca(tcm)(2) is of the type found for several transition metal tricyanomethanides [1], containing two independent interpenetrating networks. Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O has a unique crystal structure corresponding to a three-dimensional coordination polymer with nine fold coordinated Ba atoms connected by water molecules and tricyanomethanide anions.
Effects of starch gelatinization and oxidation on the rheological behavior of chitosan/starch blends
Resumo:
Chitosan/starchblends represent an interesting alternative for the preparation of biocompatible drug delivery systems, packing materials and edible films. This paper reports on the effects of starch gelatinization and oxidation on the rheological behavior of chitosan/starch blends. The results show that the modifications in the starch structure cause changes in G` (storage modulus) and G `` (lossmodulus) as a function of frequency. For chitosan/starch, G `` is higher than G`, showing a viscous behavior. However, for chitosan/gelatinized starch and chitosan/oxidized starch, an increase in the angular frequency promotes a modulus crossover at omega = 0.02 and 0.04 rad s(-1), respectively. The viscosity curves as a function of shear rate show that both modifications cause an increase in viscosity, and all blends show a non-Newtonian behavior. (C) 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

In the present study porcine skin and bovine pericardium were used as a source of type I collagen. Both were submitted to an alkaline treatment and mineralized by the alternate soaking method. Thermal stability and extent of mineralization have been investigated using DSC and TG. After alkaline hydrolysis there is a decrease in thermal stability but mineralization stabilizes collagen structure. Thermogravimetric data have shown that the amount of hydroxyapatite present in bovine pericardium matrix (45%) was greater than on porcine skin matrix (20%). Presence of hydroxyapatite was confirmed by EDX.
