In this paper, a detailed study of the capacitance spectra obtained from Au/doped-polyaniline/Al structures in the frequency domain (0.05 Hz-10 MHz), and at different temperatures (150-340 K) is carried out. The capacitance spectra behavior in semiconductors can be appropriately described by using abrupt cut-off models, since they assume that the electronic gap states that can follow the ac modulation have response times varying rapidly with a certain abscissa, which is dependent on both temperature and frequency. Two models based on the abrupt cut-off concept, formerly developed to describe inorganic semiconductor devices, have been used to analyze the capacitance spectra of devices based on doped polyaniline (PANI), which is a well-known polymeric semiconductor with innumerous potential technological applications. The application of these models allowed the determination of significant parameters, such as Debye length (approximate to 20 nm), position of bulk Fermi level (approximate to 320 meV) and associated density of states (approximate to 2x10(18) eV(-1) cm(-3)), width of the space charge region (approximate to 70 nm), built-in potential (approximate to 780 meV), and the gap states` distribution.

The use of liposomes to encapsulate materials has received widespread attention for drug delivery, transfection, diagnostic reagent, and as immunoadjuvants. Phospholipid polymers form a new class of biomaterials with many potential applications in medicine and research. Of interest are polymeric phospholipids containing a diacetylene moiety along their acyl chain since these kinds of lipids can be polymerized by Ultra-Violet (UV) irradiation to form chains of covalently linked lipids in the bilayer. In particular the diacetylenic phosphatidylcholine 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DC8,9PC) can form intermolecular cross-linking through the diacetylenic group to produce a conjugated polymer within the hydrocarbon region of the bilayer. As knowledge of liposome structures is certainly fundamental for system design improvement for new and better applications, this work focuses on the structural properties of polymerized DC8,9PC:1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phusphocholine (DMPC) liposomes. Liposomes containing mixtures of DC8,9PC and DMPC, at different molar ratios, and exposed to different polymerization cycles, were studied through the analysis of the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of a spin label incorporated into the bilayer, and the calorimetric data obtained from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies. Upon irradiation, if all lipids had been polymerized, no gel-fluid transition would be expected. However, even samples that went through 20 cycles of UV irradiation presented a DSC band, showing that around 80% of the DC8,9PC molecules were not polymerized. Both DSC and ESR indicated that the two different lipids scarcely mix at low temperatures, however few molecules of DMPC are present in DC8,9PC rich domains and vice versa. UV irradiation was found to affect the gel fluid transition of both DMPC and DC8,9PC rich regions, indicating the presence of polymeric units of DC8,9PC in both areas, A model explaining lipids rearrangement is proposed for this partially polymerized system.

We report a new procedure to convert the polymer precursor poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT) into poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) using microwave irradiation. Spin-coated PTHT films were irradiated at room temperature under ambient conditions in a commercial microwave oven, with varying power from 20W to 100W. Complete conversion was reached within only 5 min of irradiation for powers above 50W, yielding PPV films with absorption and photoluminescence spectra that are practically indistinguishable from the spectra of thermally converted PPV films, which require ca. 2 h of a high temperature (similar to 200 degrees C) thermal treatment. In addition to a much faster conversion procedure, the irradiation with microwaves led to a red shift in the absorption spectrum of a PTHT film, which varied linearly with the time of irradiation. These films can then be used as low-cost, easy-to-use detectors of microwaves. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present work, the surface of the Eu-BTC = [Eu(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [Eu(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [Eu(TMA)(H(2)O)(6)] complexes (EMA = 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylate, TLA = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate and TMA = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) was modified using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) by a new microwave assisted method that proved to be simple and efficient. According to our observations, the most efficient luminescence is the material based on APTES incorporating [Eu(TMA)(H(2)O)(6)] complexes, denoted as Eu-TMA-Si, shows the highest emission efficiency. Therefore, it is proposed as a promising material for molecular conjugation in clinical diagnosis. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Polyaniline is a conducting polymer with appealing electrical and optical properties, arising from the -conjugation along the polymer backbone. The understanding of its excited state absorption is of prime importance for designing and fabricating optical devices. Here, we report on the study of the excited state absorption of doped and undoped PANI by using femtosecond pulses in the spectral range from 450nm up to 850nm. For undoped PANI, we observed saturation of absorption as well as reverse saturable absorption, depending on the excitation wavelength. For doped PANI, however, only saturable absorption was observed.

The use of conjugated polymers in the gas and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detections represents an advance in the development of the electronic noses. Polythiophenes show good thermal and environmental stability, are easily synthesized and they have been studied as gas and VOCs sensors using different principles or transduction techniques. Among these techniques, optical sensing has been attracted attention, mainly due to its versatility. However, conjugated polymer-based optical sensors are still less studied. This paper describes the use of two poly(3-alkylthiophenes) for VOCs optical detection. The sensing measurements were carried out using visible spectroscopy. Both polymers showed good sensitivity to the VOCs, showing fast and reversible responses with some hysteresis, and were unable to detect hydroxylated samples. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the thickness of polymer films influences the intensity of the optical response. Although there is similarity in the superficial composition of the polymers films, demonstrated by their surface energies, they showed significant differences in their optical properties upon exposure to the VOCs. We carried out experiments of induced birefringence via two-photon absorption in spin-coated films of the conjugated polymer poly[2-[ethyl-[4-(4-nitro-phenylazo)-phenyl] -amino]-ethane (3-thienyl)ethanoate], PAzT, at 680 and 775 nm. This process allows recording in the bulk because of the spatial confinement of the bireffingence provided by the two-photon absorption. The induced birefringence is associated with molecular reorientation caused by the two-photon induced isomerization of the azochromophores attached to the polymer backbone. In addition, the two-photon absorption spectrum of PAzT was measured to help selecting the excitation wavelength for two-photon absorption induced birefringence. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Layer-by-layer (LBL) films of nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) alternated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been prepared, whose surface charge has been evaluated using surface potential measurements. From adsorption kinetics results, we obtained the immersion time of similar to 40 s, which was used to assemble layers of NiTsPc. The effect of gold (Au) and aluminum (Al) electrodes on the charge behavior was examined. We found that the surface potential (i.e. surface charge) was inverted each time a layer of PAH was alternated with another of NiTsPc molecules for the two types of electrodes, which was attributed to charge overcompensation between positive charges of PAH molecules, and negative charges from NiTsPc molecules. Defects are usually present in organic polymer films and are commonly invoked to explain the low efficiency obtained in organic-based optoelectronic devices. We propose that controlled insertion of substitutional impurities may, on the contrary, tune the optoelectronic properties of the underivatized organic material and, in the case studied here, maximize the efficiency of a solar cell. We investigate a specific oxygen-impurity substitution, the keto-defect -(CH(2)-C=O)- in underivatized crystalline poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV), and its impact on the electronic structure of the bulk film, through a combined classical (force-field) and quantum mechanical (DFT) approach. We find defect states which suggest a spontaneous electron hole separation typical of a donor acceptor interface, optimal for photovoltaic devices. Furthermore, the inclusion of oxygen impurities does not introduce defect states in the gap and thus, contrary to standard donor-acceptor systems, should preserve the intrinsic high open circuit voltage (V(oc)) that may be extracted from PPV-based devices.

We performed classical molecular dynamics simulations of the vapor-deposition of alpha-T4 oligomers on the TiO(2)-anatase (101) surface, comparing different sets of charges associated with the atoms of the model. The potential energy surfaces for alpha-T4 and TiO(2) were described by re-parametrizations of the Universal force field with charges given by the charge equilibration (QEq) scheme, or with fixed charges obtained by an ab initio method using the Hirshfeld partition. The two sets of charges lead to completely different results for the interface formation, and for the characteristics of the organic film, with a clearly defined alpha-T4 contact layer in the QEq case, and a more homogeneous molecular distribution when using Hirshfeld charges. The main reason for the discrepancy was found to be the incorrect charge assignment given by QEq to the sulfur and alpha-carbon atoms in thiophenes, and highlight the relevance of long-range interactions in the organization of molecular films. In this work, we have studied the surface morphology of photo-irradiated poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) thin films by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). We have analyzed the first-order statistical parameters, the height distribution and the distance between selected peaks. The second-order statistical analysis was introduced calculating the auto-covariance function to determine the correlation length between heights. We have observed that the photo-irradiation process produces a surface topology more homogeneous and isotropic such as a normal surface. In addition, the polymer surface irradiation can be used as a new methodology to obtain materials optically modified. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We use two-photon polymerization to fabricate 3D scaffolds with precise control over pore size and shape for studying cell migration in 3D. These scaffolds allow movement of cells in all directions. The fabrication, imaging, and quantitative analysis method developed here can be used to do systematic cell studies in 3D.

In this work we used the conversion process of a precursor polymer into polyparaphenylenevinylene (PPV) at low temperatures in order to control the effective conjugation degree of spin-casted PPV films. The absorption and emission spectra of the films were studied by following a partial substitution of chloride counterions from poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT), used as a precursor, by sodium acid dodecyl benzenesulfonate (DBS), added as a surfactant salt. Upon controlling the DBS amount and conversion temperature (T-c) of PTHT/DBS to PPV films, the band gap of PPV changed from 409 to 506 nm, and 505 to 532 nm, values obtained from absorbance and emission measurements, respectively. Based on these experimental data, we proposed a physical model which represents the chemical structure of PPV as a distribution of conjugated chain segments (like oligomers) alternated by non-conjugated segments (structural defects and/or from the precursor polymer). Sum-Frequency Vibrational Spectroscopy (SFVS) has been used to investigate the effect of nitrogen-flow drying on the molecular ordering of Layer-by-Layer (LbL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) alternated with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS). We find that films dried by spontaneous water evaporation are more ordered and homogeneous than films dried by nitrogen flow. The latter are quite inhomogeneous and may have regions with highly disordered polymer conformation. We propose that drying by spontaneous water evaporation reduces the effect of drag by the drying front, while during nitrogen-flow drying the fast evaporation of water ""freezes"" the disordered conformation of adsorbed polyelectrolyte molecules. These findings are important for many applications of LbL films, since device performance usually depends on film morphology and its molecular structure.

The basic optical properties of PPV-based polymers have been extensively studied due to their potential technological applications. However, a detailed investigation of electronic processes following photoexcitation in the ultraviolet is still lacking. We report photoluminescence measurements on poly(1-methoxy-4-ethylhexyloxy-paraphenylenevinylene) - MEH-PPV in the 2.0-5.6 eV range, with excitation up to 5.6 eV. The photoluminescence spectra lineshape is independent of excitation energy. The photoluminescence efficiency is high for energies well below the absorption maximum due to near-resonant excitation of the longest conjugated segments which are responsible for the PL It decreases strongly for excitation energies in the range 2.1-2.5 eV (up to the absorption maximum) and slightly from 2.5 to 5.6 eV. The results indicate that states excited in the ultraviolet rapidly relax nonradiatively to the lowest state, from where the usual luminescence occurs. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
