The objective was to adjust a protocol for peach pollen grains in vitro germination. For that, were realized five experiments with the purpose of establish the ideal concentration of sucrose, agar, calcium nitrate, boric acid, the best pH value, the germination temperature and the polinic tube emission time. As vegetal material, was used the Aurora 1 and Douradao cultivars. For the Aurora 1 cultivar, higher germination of pollen grains was obtained with the use of 48,29 g. L(-1) of sucrose, 10 g. L(-1) of agar, 400 mg.L(-1) of boric acid and pH 5,5. For the Douradao cultivar, higher germination was obtained on medium containing 90 g.L(-1) of sucrose, 10 g.L(-1) of agar, 400 mg.L(-1) of boric acid, 369 mg.L(-1) of calcium nitrate and pH 6,5. The best temperature for the germination of the pollen grains for both cultivars was 25 degrees C, being the pollen grains germination percentage raising proportionally directly to the evaluation time.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de duas temperaturas e condições de atmosfera controlada (AC) sobre a conservação de pêssegos da cultivar Maciel, colhidos em dois estádios de maturação. Os tratamentos avaliados foram: armazenamento refrigerado (AR) na temperatura de +0,5°C; AR na temperatura de -0,5°C; 2,0kPa O2 + 4,0kPa CO2 em -0,5°C; 1,0kPa O2 + 3,0kPa CO2 em -0,5°C; 2,0kPa O2 + 6,0kPa CO2 em -0,5°C. As avaliações foram realizadas após 60 dias de armazenamento e mais dois e quatro dias de exposição dos frutos à temperatura de 20ºC. Na análise realizada após dois meses de armazenamento, mais dois dias a 20°C, verificou-se que os frutos submetidos a 2,0kPa de O2 + 4,0 kPa de CO2 apresentaram maior firmeza de polpa em relação aos demais tratamentos, sendo que a mesma não foi influenciada pelo estádio de maturação. Os sólidos solúveis totais foram maiores em frutos com estádio de maturação maduro independente da condição de armazenamento. A ocorrência de podridões e escurecimento interno da polpa não foi influenciada pelo estádio de maturação. No entanto, a condição de AC de 1,0 kPa de O2 + 3,0kPa de CO2 proporcionou o menor percentual de podridões e escurecimento interno da polpa em relação aos demais tratamentos. Na avaliação realizada aos quatro dias de exposição a 20°C, os frutos colhidos no estádio maduro estavam completamente podres, independente da condição de armazenamento praticada.

Local food diversity and traditional crops are essential for cost-effective management of the global epidemic of type 2 diabetes and associated complications of hypertension. Water and 12% ethanol extracts of native Peruvian fruits such as Lucuma (Pouteria lucuma), Pacae (Inga feuille), Papayita arequipena (Carica pubescens), Capuli (Prunus capuli), Aguaymanto (Physalis peruviana), and Algarrobo (Prosopis pallida) were evaluated for total phenolics, antioxidant activity based on 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay, and functionality such as in vitro inhibition of alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) relevant for potential management of hyperglycemia and hypertension linked to type 2 diabetes. The total phenolic content ranged from 3.2 (Aguaymanto) to 11.4 (Lucuma fruit) mg/g of sample dry weight. A significant positive correlation was found between total phenolic content and antioxidant activity for the ethanolic extracts. No phenolic compound was detected in Lucuma (fruit and powder) and Pacae. Aqueous extracts from Lucuma and Algarrobo had the highest alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities. Papayita arequipena and Algarrobo had significant ACE inhibitory activities reflecting antihypertensive potential. These in vitro results point to the excellent potential of Peruvian fruits for food-based strategies for complementing effective antidiabetes and antihypertension solutions based on further animal and clinical studies.

The aim of this work was evaluate the effect of citric acid at 1% and 2% in the maintenance of the quality of minimally processed `Regis` peaches, during 9 days storage under refrigeration (5+/-1 degrees C, 85-87% RU) and passive modified atmospheres. The following analyses were realized: color, firmness, texture, soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, CO(2) and O(2). Increasing in a value and decreasing in b and L values on minimally processed peaches were observed, independent of the citric acid treatment, indicating a browning on the product mainly on the 9(th) day of storage. Overall, the levels of titratable acidity and pH changed at the storage period and at the concentrations studied, unlike the content of soluble solids that remained unchanged. The texture, CO(2) and O(2) changed only for the storage period unlike texture that was higher with the treatment of citric acid 2%. It can be concluded that neither tested concentration of citric acid was effective in preventing enzymatic browning of minimally processed peaches stored the 5+/-1 degrees C and 85-87% RU and passive modified atmosphere.

The success in the adoption of peach integrated production (IP) was evaluated in small orchards of the Parana State. The importance of specific technical accompaniment; points of strangulating in adoption of technology and the classification of the areas to IP conformity were evaluated. The seasons 2005/2006 (without IP orientation) and 2006/2007 (with IP orientation) were compared considering 20 producers who were oriented monthly to attend the minimum requisites. The incidence of peach rust (Tranzschelia discolor) and of brown rot (Monilinia fructicola) in full bloom was evaluated in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 seasons, as biological parameters to accompany the efficiency of system adoption. After the technical accompaniment in 2007/2008 season, the software APOIA-Novo Rural-PI (APOIA-PI) was applied to measure the conformity to IP in peach orchards. The conformity index of each orchard was compared to the minimum requisite to classify as IP (0.7). The major difficulties in register of field book were: pests monitoring; collect of climate data and the harvest evaluation. The technical accompaniment increased in 60% the conformity in use of field book. In 2007/2008 season, the brown rot incidence increased in some areas, caused by not following IP recommendations. The inadequate management caused the increment in pathogen inoculum, promoting the disease development in peach orchards. The APOIA-PI classified two orchards as good agricultural practices (GAP) (0.7 <= conformity index >= 0.4), two as integrated production (IP) (>= 0.7) and the other orchards had conformity index lower than 0.4.

Brown rot, caused by Monilinia fructicola, is the most widespread disease for organic peach production systems in Brazil. The objective of this study was to determine the favorable periods for latent infection by M. fructicola in organic systems. The field experiment was carried out during 2006, 2007 and 2008 using the cultivar Aurora. After thinning fruits were bagged using white paraffin bags, and the treatments were performed by removing the bags and exposing the fruit for four days to the natural infection during each of seven fruit stages from pit hardening to harvest. Throughout the entire growing season, the conidial density and the weather variables were measured and related to the disease incidence using multiple regression analyses. At the fourth day after harvest in each season, the cumulative disease incidence was assessed, and it ranged from 40 to 98%. The incidence of brown rot on fruit that were exposed during the embryo growing stage was lower than that of unbagged fruit throughout the entire season in 2006 and 2008. The relative humidity and the conidia density were significantly correlated to disease incidence. Based on our results, M. fructicola can infect peaches during any stage of fruit development, and control of the disease must be revised to account for organic peach production systems. Mechanical injuries and diseases in stone fruit are important causes for market rejection. The objectives of this research were to quantify and characterize the mechanical injuries and diseases in peaches, nectarines and plums at Sao Paulo`s wholesale market, the largest in Brazil. Incidence of injuries was assessed weekly in 1 % of the marketed fruit (2973 fruit/week), from September to December in 2003 and 2004. Mechanical injuries were the most frequent injuries in both years, ranging from 8.73% (plum) to 44.5% (nectarine) of injured fruit. There was a significant positive correlation between the incidence of postharvest mechanical injuries and postharvest diseases. Incidence of postharvest diseases varied from 2.5% to 6.6%. Cladosporium rot (Cladosporium sp.) and brown rot (Monilinia fructicola) were the most frequent diseases, and were mostly detected in the apexes of nectarines and peaches. Aurora (peach), Sunraycer (nectarine) and Gulfblaze (plum) varieties were the most susceptible to injuries and diseases. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
