TiO2 thin films, employed in dye-sensitized solar cells, were prepared by the sol-gel method or directly by Degussa P25 oxide and their surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of adsorption of the cis-[Ru(dcbH(2))(2)(NCS)(2)] dye, N3, on the surface of films was investigated. From XPS spectra taken before and after argon-ion sputtering procedure, the surface composition of inner and outer layers of sensitized films was obtained and a preferential etching of Ru peak in relation to the Ti and N ones was identified. The photoelectrochemical parameters were also evaluated and rationalized in terms of the morphological characteristics of the films. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Defects are usually present in organic polymer films and are commonly invoked to explain the low efficiency obtained in organic-based optoelectronic devices. We propose that controlled insertion of substitutional impurities may, on the contrary, tune the optoelectronic properties of the underivatized organic material and, in the case studied here, maximize the efficiency of a solar cell. We investigate a specific oxygen-impurity substitution, the keto-defect -(CH(2)-C=O)- in underivatized crystalline poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV), and its impact on the electronic structure of the bulk film, through a combined classical (force-field) and quantum mechanical (DFT) approach. We find defect states which suggest a spontaneous electron hole separation typical of a donor acceptor interface, optimal for photovoltaic devices. Furthermore, the inclusion of oxygen impurities does not introduce defect states in the gap and thus, contrary to standard donor-acceptor systems, should preserve the intrinsic high open circuit voltage (V(oc)) that may be extracted from PPV-based devices.

Charge recombination at the conductor substrate/electrolyte interface has been prevented by using efficient blocking layers of TiO(2) compact films in dye-sensitized solar cell photoanodes. Compact blocking layers have been deposited before the mesoporous TiO(2) film by the layer-by-layer technique using titania nanoparticles as cations and sodium sulfonated polystyrene, PSS, as a polyanion. The TiO(2)/PSS blocking layer in a DSC prevents the physical contact of FTO and the electrolyte and leads to a 28% increase in the cell`s overall conversion efficiency, from 5.7% to 7.3%. The present paper describes the catalytic oxidation of urea performed by nickel hydroxide and nickel/cobalt hydroxide modified electrodes by using both electrodeposited films and nanoparticles. The incorporation of Co foreign atoms leads to a slight increase in sensitivity besides the shift in redox process, avoiding the oxygen reaction. Nanostructured Ni80Co20(OH)(2) was synthesized by sonochemical route producing 5 nm diameter particles characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) being immobilized onto electrode by using the electrostatic Layer-by-layer technique, yielding attractive modified electrodes for sensor development. [Ru-2(dNSAID)(4)Cl] and novel [Ru-2(dNSAID)(4)(H2O)(2)]PF6 complexes, where dNSAID = deprotonated carboxylate from the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSIDs), respectively: ibuprofen, Hibp (1) and aspirin, Hasp (2); naproxen, Hnpx (3) and indomethacin, Hind (4), have been prepared and characterized by optical spectroscopic methods. All of the compounds exhibit mixed valent Ru-2(II, III) cores where metal-metal bonds are stabilized by four drug-carboxylate bridging ligands in paddlewheel type structures. The diruthenium complexes and their parent NSAIDs showed no significant effects for Hep2 human larynx or T24/83 human bladder tumor. In contrast, the coordination of Ru-2(II,III) core led to synergistic effects that increased significantly the inhibition of C6 rat glioma proliferation in relation to the organic NSAIDs naproxen and ibuprofen, The possibility that the complexes Ru-2-ibp and Ru-2-npx may exert effects (anti-angiogenic and anti-matrix metalloprotease) that are similar to those exhibited by NAMI-A opens new horizons for in vivo C6 glioma model studies. Nanoparticles of NiMn(2)O(4) were successfully obtained by mixing gelatin and inorganic salts NiCl(2) center dot 6H(2)O and MnCl(2) center dot 4H(2)O in aqueous solution. The mixture has been synthesized at different temperatures and resulted in NiMn(2)O(4) nanoparticles with crystallites size in the range of 14-44 nm, as inferred from X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data. We have also observed that both the average crystallite size and the unit cell parameters increase with increasing synthesis temperature. Magnetic measurements confirmed the presence of a magnetic transition near 110K. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The synthesis of the macrolactone core of migrastatin 2, its potent anti-metastasis analogue 34, and ester derivatives 35 and 38 are reported. The approach involves the use of a dihydroxylation reaction to establish the desired C-8 stereocenter followed by a metathesis cyclization reaction. The effects of the compounds on the migration and invasion of human breast cancer cells were evaluated by using the wound-healing and the Boyden-chamber cell-migration and cell-invasion assays. The results revealed a high potency of the macrolactones 2 and 34 and the ester analogues 35 and 38, which suggests they have potential as antimetastatic agents.

Caulobacter crescentus sigma(E) belongs to the ECF (extracytoplasmic function) subfamily of RNA polymerase sigma factors, whose members regulate gene expression in response to distinct environmental stresses. During physiological growth conditions, data indicate that sigma(E) is maintained in reduced levels due to the action of ChrR, a negative regulator of rpoE gene expression and function. However, once bacterial cells are exposed to cadmium, organic hydroperoxide, singlet oxygen or UV-A irradiation, transcription of rpoE is induced in a sigma(E)-dependent manner. Site-directed mutagenesis indicated that residue C188 in ChrR is critical for the cadmium response while residues H140 and H142 are required for the bacterial response to organic hydroperoxide, singlet oxygen and UV-A. Global transcriptional analysis showed that sigma(E) regulates genes involved in protecting cells against oxidative damages. A combination of transcriptional start site identification and promoter prediction revealed that some of these genes contain a putative sigma(E)-dependent motif in their upstream regions. Furthermore, deletion of rpoE and two sigma(E)-dependent genes (cfaS and hsp20) impairs Caulobacter survival when singlet oxygen is constantly generated in the cells.

In the present work, a new approach for the determination of the partition coefficient in different interfaces based on the density function theory is proposed. Our results for log P(ow) considering a n-octanol/water interface for a large super cell for acetone -0.30 (-0.24) and methane 0.95 (0.78) are comparable with the experimental data given in parenthesis. We believe that these differences are mainly related to the absence of van der Walls interactions and the limited number of molecules considered in the super cell. The numerical deviations are smaller than that observed for interpolation based tools. As the proposed model is parameter free, it is not limited to the n-octanol/water interface.

Newly designed 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-containing fluorescent probes with four excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) sites were successfully tested in live cell-imaging assays using a confluent monolayer of human stem-cells (tissue). All tested dyes were compared with the commercially available DAPI and gave far better results. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Dye-sensitized solar cells, named by us Dye-Cells, are one of the most promising devices for solar energy conversion due to their reduced production cost and low environmental impact, especially those sensitized by natural dyes. The efficiency and stability of devices based on natural sensitizers such as mulberry (Morus alba Lam), blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus Lam), and jaboticaba`s skin (Mirtus cauliflora Mart) were investigated. Dye-Cells prepared with aqueous mulberry extract presented the highest P(max) value (1.6 mW cm(-2)) with J(sc) = 6.14 mA cm(-2) and V(oc) = 0.49 V, Photoelectrochemical parameters of 16 cm(2) active area devices sensitized by mulberry dye were constant for 14 weeks of continuous evaluation. Moreover, the cell remained stable even after 36 weeks with a fairly good efficiency. Therefore, mulberry dye opens up a perspective of commercial feasibility for inexpensive and environmentally friendly Dye-Cells. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work investigates the solar heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of three commercial acid dyes: Blue 9 (C.I. 42090), Red 51 (C.I. 45430), and Yellow 23 (C.I. 19140). TiO(2) P25 from Degussa was used as the photocatalyst. The dyes were completely degraded within 120 min of treatment in the following increasing order of removal rate: Blue 9 < Yellow 23 < Red 51. The photocatalytic color removal process was well described by a two-first-order in-series reaction, followed by another first-order reaction. Photolytic experiments showed that this process is quite inefficient and highly selective towards Red 51 only. The dyes` solution was completely decolorized and organic matter removals up to 99% were achieved with photocatalysis. The lack of selectivity and the possibility of using solar light to excite the photocatalyst are promising results regarding the feasibility of this technology.
