Magnetic nanoparticles surface-functionalized with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (MNPs-DMSA) constitute an innovative and promising approach for tissue- and cell-targeted delivery of therapeutic drugs in the lung. Transendothelial migration of leukocytes in the lung is a side effect of endovenous administration of MNPs-DMSA. Using cytologic and phenotypic analysis of murine bronchoalveolar lavage cells, we identified monocytes/macrophages as the main subpopulation of leukocytes involved in this process. Moreover, ultrastructural analysis revealed the presence of nanoparticles inside of numerous macrophages from bronchoalveolar lavage. MNPs-DMSA at concentrations as high as 1 X 10(15) nanoparticles/mL had no toxic effects on macrophages, as evidenced by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazolyi-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Notably, MNPs-DMSA up-regulated the mRNA expression of E, L- and P-selectin and macrophage-1 antigen in the murine lung. Upregulation of these cell adhesion molecules was associated with an increased concentration of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in lung. Finally, the critical relevance of the beta(2) integrin-dependent pathway in leukocyte transmigration elicited by MNPs-DMSA was demonstrated by use of knockout mice. Our results characterize mechanisms of the pro-inflammatory effects of MNPs-DMSA in the lung, and identify beta(2) integrin-targeted interventions as promising strategies to reduce pulmonary side effects of MNPs-DMSA during biomedical applications. We here report the preparation of supported palladium nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized by pendant phosphine groups by reacting a palladium complex containing the ligand 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde with an amino-functionalized silica surface The Pd nanocatalyst is active for Suzuki cross-coupling reaction avoiding any addition of other sources of phosphine ligands The Pd intermediates and Pd NPs were characterized by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and transmission electron microscopy techniques The synthetic method was also applied to prepare magnetically recoverable Pd NPs leading to a catalyst that could be reused for up to 10 recycles In summary we gathered the advantages of heterogeneous catalysis magnetic separation and enhanced catalytic activity of palladium promoted by phosphine ligands to synthesize a new catalyst for Suzuki cross-coupling reactions The Pd NP catalyst prepared on the phosphine-functionalized support was more active and selective than a similar Pd NP catalyst prepared on an amino-functionalized support (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved

We performed a first-principles investigation on the structural, electronic and optical properties of crystals made of chemically functionalized adamantane molecules. Several molecular building blocks, formed by boron and nitrogen substitutional functionalizations, were considered to build zinc blende and wurtzite crystals, and the resulting structures presented large bulk moduli and cohesive energies, wide and direct bandgaps, and low dielectric constants (low-kappa materials). Those properties provide stability for such structures up to room temperature, superior to those of typical molecular crystals. This indicates a possible road map for crystal engineering using functionalized diamondoids, with potential applications ranging from space filling between conducting wires in nanodevices to nano-electromechanical systems.

Chemically functionalized adamantane molecules have been investigated by first principles total energy calculations. Boron and nitrogen functionalized molecules were found to be very stable, consistent with available experimental data. Two hypothetical molecular crystals, involving functionalized adamantane, were investigated. These molecular crystals presented direct electronic bandgaps and large bulk moduli, which suggested a possible road for molecular self-assembly using functionalized diamondoids. Optical Properties and Charge-Transfer Excitations in Edge-Functionalized All-Graphene Nanojunctions
Resumo:
We investigate the optical properties of edge-fiinctionalized graphene nanosystems, focusing on the formation of junctions and charge-transfer excitons. We consider a class of graphene structures that combine the main electronic features of graphene with the wide tunability of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. By investigating prototypical ribbon-like systems, we show that, upon convenient choice of functional groups, low-energy excitations with remarkable charge-transfer character and large oscillator strength are obtained. These properties can be further modulated through an appropriate width variation, thus spanning a wide range in the low-energy region of the UV-vis spectra. Our results are relevant in view of designing all-graphene optoelectronic nanodevices, which take advantage of the versatility of molecular functionalization, together with the stability and the electronic properties of graphene nanostructures.

Low-frequency noise in an electrolyte-insulator- semiconductor (EIS) structure functionalized with multilayers of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is studied. The noise spectral density exhibits 1/f(gamma) dependence with the power factor of gamma approximate to 0.8 and gamma = 0.8-1.8 for the bare and functionalized EIS sensor, respectively. The gate-voltage noise spectral density is practically independent of the pH value of the solution and increases with increasing gate voltage or gate-leakage current. It has been revealed that functionalization of an EIS structure with a PAMAM/SWNTs multilayer leads to an essential reduction of the 1/f noise. To interpret the noise behavior in bare and functionalized EIS devices, a gate-current noise model for capacitive EIS structures based on an equivalent flatband-voltage fluctuation concept has been developed.

We evaluated the in vitro antioxidant effect of alkyl-organotellurides A-D on lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation in rat liver homogenates. The thiol oxidase and thiol peroxidase-like activities of compounds were investigated. delta-Aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (delta-ALA-D) activity was determined in rat liver homogenates. Compounds A-D protected against lipid peroxidation induced by Fe(2+)/EDTA and sodium nitroprusside (SNP). According to the confidence limits of the IC(50) values of compounds A-D, the IC(50) values for organotellurides followed the order: C (0.30 mu M) <= B (0.40 mu M) < D (0.68 mu M) < A (2.90 mu M), for Fe(2+)/EDTA, and B (0.21 mu M) <= C (0.33 mu M) < D (0.43 mu M) < A (1.21 mu M) for SNP-induced lipid peroxidation. Compounds A-D reduced protein carbonyl content to control levels. The results demonstrated an inverse correlation between thiol oxidase and delta-ALA-D activities. This study supports an antioxidant effect of organotellurides A-D on rat liver.

In the present work, the surface of the Eu-BTC = [Eu(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [Eu(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [Eu(TMA)(H(2)O)(6)] complexes (EMA = 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylate, TLA = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate and TMA = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) was modified using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) by a new microwave assisted method that proved to be simple and efficient. According to our observations, the most efficient luminescence is the material based on APTES incorporating [Eu(TMA)(H(2)O)(6)] complexes, denoted as Eu-TMA-Si, shows the highest emission efficiency. Therefore, it is proposed as a promising material for molecular conjugation in clinical diagnosis. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A C-O-dianionic zincate was generated by a Te/Li exchange reaction of an alkyltelluride, followed by Li/Zn transmetallation and reaction with methyllithium. The reaction between the enantiomerically pure (99% ee) (R)-dianionic zincate and benzoyl chloride led to 3-hydroxy-1-phenyl pentanone with total retention of the carbon configuration (99% ee). Similar results were obtained using the corresponding Lipshutz cyanocuprates. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Lithium ""butylchalcogenolates are generated in situ by reacting the elements (S, Se, and Te) with (n)butyl-lithium at 0 degrees C. Reaction of the lithium alkylchalcogenolates with activated alkenes and aldehydes gives the corresponding aldol adducts. The selenium-containing products give Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts after the oxidation/elimination of the selenoxide. The whole sequence can be performed in a one-pot procedure. The development and application of a functionalized carbon nanotubes paste electrode (CNPE) modified with crosslinked chitosan for determination of Cu(II) in industrial wastewater, natural water and human urine samples by linear scan anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) are described. Different electrodes were constructed using chitosan and chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (CTS-GA) and epichlorohydrin (CTS-ECH). The best voltammetric response for Cu(II) was obtained with a paste composition of 65% (m/m) of functionalized carbon nanotubes, 15% (m/m) of CTS-ECH, and 20% (m/m) of mineral oil using a solution of 0.05 mol L(-1) KNO(3) with pH adjusted to 2.25 with HNO(3), an accumulation potential of 0.3V vs. Ag/AgCl (3.0 mol L(-1) KCl) for 300 s and a scan rate of 100 mV s(-1). Under these optimal experimental conditions, the voltammetric response was linearly dependent on the Cu(II) concentration in the range from 7.90 x 10(-8) to 1.60 x 10(-5) mol L(-1) with a detection limit of 1.00 x 10(-8) mol L(-1). The samples analyses were evaluated using the proposed sensor and a good recovery of Cu(II) was obtained with results in the range from 98.0% to 104%. The analysis of industrial wastewater, natural water and human urine samples obtained using the proposed CNPE modified with CTS-ECH electrode and those obtained using a comparative method are in agreement at the 95% confidence level. The surface of ramie cellulose whiskers has been chemically modified by grafting organic acid chlorides presenting different lengths of the aliphatic chain by an esterification reaction. The occurrence of the chemical modification was evaluated by FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, elemental analysis and contact angle measurements. The crystallinity of the particles was not altered by the chain grafting, but it was shown that covalently grafted chains were able to crystallize at the cellulose surface when using C18. Both unmodified and functionalized nanoparticles were extruded with low density polyethylene to prepare nanocomposite materials. The homogeneity of the ensuing nanocomposites was found to increase with the length of the grafted chains. The thermomechanical properties of processed nanocomposites were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) and tensile tests. A significant improvement in terms of elongation at break was observed when sufficiently long chains were grafted on the surface of the nanoparticles. It was ascribed to improved dispersion of the nanoparticles within the LDPE matrix. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ab initio simulations of carbon nanotubes interacting with ascorbic acid and nicotinamide are reported. The electronic transport properties of these systems are studied using a combination of density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green`s functions methods. The adsorptions of both molecules are observed to depend strongly on their functionalization. The interaction through the appropriate functionalized species modifies the structural and electronic properties of the original system, resulting in a chemisorption regime. Changes in the electronic transport properties are also observed, with reductions on the total electronic transmission probabilities. Nevertheless, when the molecules interact through the pristine form, a physisorption interaction is observed with insignificant structural and electronic transport changes. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
