The Lieb-Oxford bound is a constraint upon approximate exchange-correlation functionals. We explore a nonempirical tightening of that bound in both universal and electron number-dependent form. The test functional is PBE. Regarding both atomization energies (slightly worsened) and bond lengths (slightly improved), we find the PBE functional to be remarkably insensitive to the value of the Lieb-Oxford bound. This both rationalizes the use of the original Lieb-Oxford constant in PBE and suggests that enhancement factors more sensitive to sharpened constraints await discovery.

Background and Aims The amount of data collected previously for Velloziaceae neither clarified relationships within the family nor helped determine an appropriate classification, which has led to huge discordance among treatment by different authors. To achieve an acceptable phylogenetic result and understand the evolution and roles of characters in supporting groups, a total evidence analysis was developed which included approx. 20 % of the species and all recognized genera and sections of Velloziaceae, plus outgroups representatives of related families within Pandanales. Methods Analyses were undertaken with 48 species of Velloziaceae, representing all ten genera, with DNA sequences from the atpB-rbcL spacer, trnL-trnF spacer, trnL intron, trnH-psbA spacer, ITS ribosomal DNA spacers and morphology. Key Results Four groups consistently emerge from the analyses. Persistent leaves, two phloem strands, stem cortex divided in three regions and violet tepals support Acanthochlamys as sister to Velloziaceae s. s., which are supported mainly by leaves with marginal bundles, transfusion tracheids and inflorescence without axis. Within Velloziaceae s. s., an African Xerophyta + Talbotia clade is uniquely supported by basal loculicidal capsules; an American clade, Barbacenia s. l. + Barbaceniopsis + Nanuza + Vellozia, is supported by only homoplastic characters. Barbacenia s. l. (Aylthonia + Barbacenia + Burlemarxia + Pleurostima) is supported by a double sheath in leaf vascular bundles and a corona; Barbaceniopsis + Nanuza + Vellozia is not supported by an unambiguous character, but Barbaceniopsis is supported by five characters, including diclinous flowers, Nanuza + Vellozia is supported mainly by horizontal stigma lobes and stem inner cortex cells with secondary walls, and Vellozia alone is supported mainly by pollen in tetrads. Conclusions The results imply recognition of five genera (Acanthochlamys (Xerophyta (Barbacenia (Barbaceniopsis, Vellozia)))), solving the long-standing controversies among recent classifications of the family. They also suggest a Gondwanan origin for Velloziaceae, with a vicariant pattern of distribution.

Crotoxin is the main neurotoxic component of Crotalus durissus terrificus snake venom and modulates immune and inflammatory responses, interfering with the activity of leukocytes. In the present work, the effects of crotoxin on the number of blood and lymphatic leukocytes and on lymph nodes and spleen lymphocytes population were investigated. The toxin s.c. administered to male Wistar rats, decreases the number of lymphocytes in blood and lymph circulation and increases the content of B and T-lymphocytes in lymph nodes. These effects were detected 1-2 h after treatment. The crotoxin molecule is composed of two subunits, an acidic non-toxic polypeptide, named crotapotin and a toxic basic phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)). PLA(2), but not crotapotin, decreased the number of circulating blood and lymph lymphocytes. Crotoxin promotes leukocyte adherence to endothelial cells of blood microcirculation and to lymph node high endothelial venules, which might contribute to the drop in the number of circulating lymphocytes. Crotoxin increases expression of the adhesion molecule LFA-1 in lymphocytes. The changes in the expression of the adhesion molecule might contribute, at least in part, for the increased leukocyte adhesion to endothelium. Zileuton, a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, blocked the decrease in the number of circulating leukocytes induced by crotoxin and also abolished the changes observed in leukocyte-endothelial interactions, suggesting the involvement of lipoxygenase-derived mediators in the effects of the toxin. We studied the expression pattern of cell adhesion molecules associated to transendothelial migration of leukocytes in different lung`s vascular compartments after administration of a magnetic fluid sample containing maghemite nanoparticles surface-coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid. The analyses were conducted in mice 4 and 12 h after endovenous administration of the magnetic fluid in control mice. Firstly, the migratory activity of leukocytes after magnetic fluid surface-coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid administration was confirmed using broncho-alveolar lavage and light microscopy. Then, the expression of cell adhesion molecules in the lung`s vascular compartments was investigated by immunofluorescence microscopy of frozen sections, using antibodies against L-selectin, P-selectin, E-selectin, macrophage antigen-1, and leukocyte function associated antigen-1. L- and P-selectin showed similar pattern of expression in the pulmonary vasculature in animals treated with magnetic fluid and in the control group. In contrast, macrophage antigen-1 and leukocyte function associated antigen-1 were found in capillary only in animals treated with magnetic fluid surface-coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid administration. In addition, after magnetic fluid administration E-selectin was found in post-capillary sites. Our findings demonstrated that magnetic fluid surface-coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid administration exhibits modulation effects on expression patterns of E-selectin, macrophage antigen-1, and leukocyte function associated antigen-1 in the lung`s vascular compartments. These findings are very important in a strategy to reduce the potential toxicity of magnetic fluid surface-coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid administration for medical applications.

The host defense mechanism in chromoblastomycosis has not been thoroughly investigated. It has been suggested that cell- mediated immunity in patients with long- standing chromoblastomycosis is somehow impaired. As a result, these individuals became unable to develop an efficient immune reaction. Many studies have shown that monocyte- derived macrophages exhibit critical activities in immunity to microorganisms. Moreover, the ability of cells from the monocytic lineage to process and present antigens, to produce cytokines, and to provide costimulatory signals confirms their pivotal role in the initiation of specific immune responses. In the present study, it was observed that monocytes from patients with a severe form of disease had a higher production of IL- 10 and a lower expression of HLA- DR and costimulatory molecules when stimulated with specific antigen or LPS. Immune modulation with recombinant IL- 12 or anti- IL- 10 can restore the antigen- specific Th1- type immune response in chromoblastomycosis patients by up- regulating HLA- DR and costimulatory molecules in monocytes. Therefore, our data show that monocytes from patients with different clinical forms of chromoblastomycosis present distinct phenotypic and functional profiles. This observation suggests possible mechanisms that control the T cell response and influence their role in the development of pathology.

Many potent antimicrobial peptides also present hemolytic activity, an undesired collateral effect for the therapeutic application. Unlike other mastoparan peptides, Polybia-MP1 (IDWKKLLDAAKQIL), obtained from the venom of the social wasp Polybia paulista, is highly selective of bacterial cells. The study of its mechanism of action demonstrated that it permeates vesicles at a greater rate of leakage on the anionic over the zwitterionic, impaired by the presence of cholesterol or cardiolipin; its lytic activity is characterized by a threshold peptide to lipid molar ratio that depends on the phospholipid composition of the vesicles. At these particular threshold concentrations, the apparent average pore number is distinctive between anionic and zwitterionic vesicles, suggesting that pores are similarly formed depending on the ionic character of the bilayer. To prospect the molecular reasons for the strengthened selectivity in Polybia-MP1 and its absence in Mastoparan-X, MD simulations were carried out. Both peptides presented amphipathic alpha-helical structures, as previously observed in Circular Dichroism spectra, with important differences in the extension and stability of the helix; their backbone solvation analysis also indicate a different profile, suggesting that the selectivity of Polybia-MP1 is a consequence of the distribution of the charged and polar residues along the peptide helix, and on how the solvent molecules orient themselves according to these electrostatic interactions. We suggest that the lack of hemolytic activity of Polybia-MP1 is due to the presence and position of Asp residues that enable the equilibrium of electrostatic interactions and favor the preference for the more hydrophilic environment.

We use QCD sum rules to study the recently observed resonance-like structures in the pi(+)chi(c1) mass distribution, Z(1)(+) (4050) and Z(2)(+) (4250), considered as D*(+) (D) over bar*(0) and D(1)(+) (D) over bar (0) + D(+) (D) over bar (0)(1) molecules with the quantum number J(P) = 0(+) and J(P) = 1-, respectively. We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension eight and work at leading order in alpha(s). We obtain m(D*D*) = (4.15 +/- 0.12) GeV, around 100 MeV above the D*D* threshold, and m(D1D) = (4.19 +/- 0.22) GeV, around 100 MeV below the D(1)D threshold. We conclude that the D*(+)(D) over bar*(0) state is probably a virtual state that is not related with the Z(1)(+) (4050) resonance-like structure. In the case of the D(1)D molecular state, considering the errors, its mass is consistent with both Z(1)(+)(4050) and Z(2)(+)(4250) resonance-like structures. Therefore, we conclude that no definite conclusion can be drawn for this state from the present analysis. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Barbaloin is a bioactive glycosilated 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone present in several exudates from plants, Such as Aloe vera, which are used for cosmetic or food purposes. It has been shown that barbaloin interacts with DMPG (dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol) model membranes, altering the bilayer structure (Alves, D. S.; Perez-Fons, L.; Estepa, A.; Micol, V. Biochem. Pharm. 2004, 68, 549). Considering that ESR (electron spin resonance) of spin labels is one of the best techniques to monitor structural properties at the molecular level, the alterations caused by the anthraquinone barbaloin on phospholipid bilayers will be discussed here via the ESR signal of phospholipid spin probes intercalated into the membranes. In DMPG at high ionic strength (10 mM Hepes pH 7.4 + 100 mM NaCl), a system that presents a gel-fluid transition around 23 degrees C, 20 mol % barbaloin turns the gel phase more rigid, does not alter much the fluid phase packing, but makes the lipid thermal transition less sharp. However, in a low-salt DMPG dispersion (10 mM Hepes pH 7.4 + 2 mM NaCl), which presents a rather complex gel-fluid thermal transition (Lamy-Freund, M. T.; Riske, K. A. Chem. Phys. Lipids 2003, 122, 19), barbaloin strongly affects bilayer structural properties, both in the gel and fluid phases, extending the transition region to much higher temperature values. The position of barbaloin in DMPG bilayers will be discussed on the basis of ESR results, in parallel with data from sample viscosity, DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), and SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering).

We performed a first principles total energy investigation on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of 3d-transition metal-encapsulated adamantane molecules (TM@C(10)H(16). with TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni). We find that the C-C interactions are strong enough to maintain the molecular rigidity upon TM incorporation, although outward relaxations and formation energies are large. We built a microscopic model that explains the electronic structure of those molecules. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, a systematic study of SO2 molecules interacting with pristine and transition metal (TM) covered C-60 is presented by means of first principles calculations. It is observed that the SO2 molecule interacts weakly with the pristine C-60 fullerene, although the resulting interaction is largely increased when the C-60 structure is covered with Fe, Mn, or Ti atoms and the SO2 Molecules are bounded through the TM atoms. The number of bounded SO2 molecules per TM atoms, in addition to the elevated binding energies per molecules, allows us to conclude that such composites can be used as a template for efficient devices to remove SO2 molecules or, alternatively, as SO2 gas sensor.

We report the results concerning the influence of vacuum polarization due to quantum massive vector, scalar and spinor fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric charged black holes. The vacuum polarization from quantized fields produces a shift in the values of the quasinormal frequencies, and correspondingly the semiclassical system becomes a better oscillator with respect to the classical Reissner-Nordstrom black hole.

This work summarizes results obtained on membranes composed of the ternary mixture dioleoylphosphatidylglycerol (DOPG), egg sphingomyelin (eSM) and cholesterol (Chol). The membrane phase state as a function of composition is characterized from data collected with fluorescence microscopy on giant unilamellar vesicles. The results suggest that the presence of the charged DOPG significantly decreases the composition region of coexistence of liquid ordered and liquid disordered phases as compared to that in the ternary mixture of dioleoylphosphatidycholine, sphingomyelin and cholesterol. The addition of calcium chloride to DOPG:eSM:Chol vesicles, and to a lesser extent the addition of sodium chloride, leads to the stabilization of the two-phase coexistence region, which is expressed in an increase in the miscibility temperature. On the other hand, addition of the chelating agent EDTA has the opposite effect, suggesting that impurities of divalent cations in preparations of giant vesicles contribute to the stabilization of charged domains. We also explore the behavior of these membranes in the presence of extruded unilamellar vesicles made of the positively charged lipid dioleoyltrimethylammoniumpropane (DOTAP). The latter can induce domain formation in DOPG:eSM:Chol vesicles with initial composition in the one-phase region. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigate the influence of vacuum polarization of quantum massive fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric black holes. We consider the evolution of a massless scalar field on the space-time corresponding to a charged semiclassical black hole, consisting of the quantum-corrected geometry of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole dressed by a quantum massive scalar field in the large mass limit. Using a sixth order WKB approach we find a shift in the quasinormal mode frequencies due to vacuum polarization.

We report vibrational excitation (v(i) = 0 -> v(f) = 1) cross-sections for positron scattering by H(2) and model calculations for the (v(i) = 0 -> v(f) = 1) excitation of the C-C symmetric stretch mode of C(2)H(2). The Feshbach projection operator formalism was employed to vibrationally resolve the fixed-nuclei phase shifts obtained with the Schwinger multichannel method. The near threshold behavior of H(2) and C(2)H(2) significantly differ in the sense that no low lying singularity (either virtual or bound state) was found for the former, while a e(+)-acetylene virtual state was found at the equilibrium geometry (this virtual state becomes a bound state upon stretching the molecule). For C(2)H(2), we also performed model calculations comparing excitation cross-sections arising from virtual (-i kappa(0)) and bound (+i kappa(0)) states symmetrically located around the origin of the complex momentum plane (i.e. having the same kappa(0)). The virtual state is seen to significantly couple to vibrations, and similar cross-sections were obtained for shallow bound and virtual states. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from diazobenzene Sudan III have been investigated using surface potential measurements as a function of number of layers and deposition pressures, with the surface potential data being related to molecular dipole moments obtained from theoretical electronic structure calculations. The surface potential increased with the number of layers for SIII LB films, and then tended to saturate. Results from density functional theory (DIFT) and UV-vis spectroscopy indicated that the increase is due to addition of layers with oriented molecular dipoles, with the saturation tendency being attributed to a decrease in the amount of material deposited in each layer. The surface potential increased with the surface pressure used for deposition, probably owing to a higher contribution from the vertical component of the dipole moment as a closer molecular packing, which is associated with decreasing conformational entropy, was reached.
