We present a survey of some results on ipri-rings and right Bezout rings. All these rings are generalizations of principal ideal rings. From the general point of view, decomposition theorems are proved for semiperfect ipri-rings and right Bezout rings.

In this paper, we present some results on the bounded derived category of Artin algebras, and in particular on the indecomposable objects in these categories, using homological properties. Given a complex X*, we consider the set J(X*) = {i is an element of Z vertical bar H(i)(X*) not equal 0} and we define the application l(X*) = maxJ(X*) - minJ(X*) + 1. We give relationships between some homological properties of an algebra and the respective application l. On the other hand, using homological properties again, we determine two subcategories of the bounded derived category of an algebra, which turn out to be the bounded derived categories of quasi-tilted algebras. As a consequence of these results we obtain new characterizations of quasi-tilted and quasi-tilted gentle algebras.

We introduce a new class of noncommutative rings - Galois orders, realized as certain subrings of invariants in skew semigroup rings, and develop their structure theory. Ring chromosomes are often associated with abnormal phenotypes due to loss of genomic material and also because of ring instability at mitosis after sister chromatid exchange events. We investigated ring chromosome instability in six patients with ring chromosomes 4, 14, 15, and 18 by examining 48- and 72-h lymphocyte cultures at the first, second and subsequent cell divisions after bromodeoxyuridine incorporation. Although most cells from all patients showed only one monocentric ring chromosome, ring chromosome loss and secondary aberrations were observed both in 48-and 72-h lymphocyte cultures and in metaphase cells of the different cell generations. We found no clear-cut correlation between ring size and ring instability; we also did not find differences between apparently complete rings and rings with genetic material loss. The cytogenetic findings revealed secondary aberrations in all ring chromosome patients. We concluded that cells with ring chromosome instability can multiply and survive in vivo, and that they can influence the patient's phenotype.

A great part of the interest in complex networks has been motivated by the presence of structured, frequently nonuniform, connectivity. Because diverse connectivity patterns tend to result in distinct network dynamics, and also because they provide the means to identify and classify several types of complex network, it becomes important to obtain meaningful measurements of the local network topology. In addition to traditional features such as the node degree, clustering coefficient, and shortest path, motifs have been introduced in the literature in order to provide complementary descriptions of the network connectivity. The current work proposes a different type of motif, namely, chains of nodes, that is, sequences of connected nodes with degree 2. These chains have been subdivided into cords, tails, rings, and handles, depending on the type of their extremities (e.g., open or connected). A theoretical analysis of the density of such motifs in random and scale-free networks is described, and an algorithm for identifying these motifs in general networks is presented. The potential of considering chains for network characterization has been illustrated with respect to five categories of real-world networks including 16 cases. Several interesting findings were obtained, including the fact that several chains were observed in real-world networks, especially the world wide web, books, and the power grid. The possibility of chains resulting from incompletely sampled networks is also investigated.

The title 2:1 complex of 3-nitrophenol (MNP) and 4,4'-bipyridyl N, N'-dioxide (DPNO), 2C(6)H(5)NO(3)center dot C(10)H(8)N(2)O(2) or 2MNP center dot DPNO, crystallizes as a centrosymmetric three-component adduct with a dihedral angle of 59.40 (8)degrees between the planes of the benzene rings of MNP and DPNO (the DPNO moiety lies across a crystallographic inversion centre located at the mid-point of the C-C bond linking its aromatic rings). The complex owes its formation to O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds [O center dot center dot center dot O = 2.605 (3) angstrom]. Molecules are linked by intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot N interactions forming R(2)(1) (6) and R(2)(2) (10) rings, and R(6)(6) (34) and R(4)(4) (26) macro-rings, all of which are aligned along the [(1) over bar 01] direction, and R(2)(2) (10) and R(2)(1) (7) rings aligned along the [010] direction. The combination of chains of rings along the [(1) over bar 01] and [010] directions generates the three-dimensional structure. A total of 27 systems containing the DNPO molecule and forming molecular complexes of an organic nature were analysed and compared with the structural characteristics of the dioxide reported here. The N-O distance [1.325 (2) angstrom] depends not only on the interactions involving the O atom at the N-O group, but also on the structural ordering and additional three-dimensional interactions in the crystal structure. A density functional theory (DFT) optimized structure at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level is compared with the molecular structure in the solid state.

A mechanism for the kinetic instabilities observed in the galvanostatic electro-oxidation of methanol is suggested and a model developed. The model is investigated using stoichiometric network analysis as well as concepts from algebraic geometry (polynomial rings and ideal theory) revealing the occurrence of a Hopf and a saddle-node bifurcation. These analytical solutions are confirmed by numerical integration of the system of differential equations. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics

The antioxidant activity of natural and synthetic compounds was evaluated using five in vitro methods: ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydradzyl (DPPH), oxygen radical absorption capacity (ORAL), oxidation of an aqueous dispersion of linoleic acid accelerated by azo-initiators (LAOX), and oxidation of a meat homogenate submitted to a thermal treatment (TBARS). All results were expressed as Trolox equivalents. The application of multivariate statistical techniques suggested that the phenolic compounds (caffeic acid, carnosic acid, genistein and resveratrol), beyond their high antioxidant activity measured by the DPPH, FRAP and TBARS methods, showed the highest ability to react with the radicals in the ORAC methodology, compared to the other compounds evaluated in this study (ascorbic acid, erythorbate, tocopherol, BHT, Trolox, tryptophan, citric acid, EDTA, glutathione, lecithin, methionine and tyrosine). This property was significantly correlated with the number of phenolic rings and catecholic structure present in the molecule. Based on a multivariate analysis, it is possible to select compounds from different clusters and explore their antioxidant activity interactions in food products.

Azo dyes are of environmental concern due to their degradation products, widespread use, and low-removal rate during conventional treatment. Their toxic properties are related to the nature and position of the substituents with respect to the aromatic rings and amino nitrogen atom. The dyes Disperse Red 1 and Disperse Red 13 were tested for Salmonella mutagenicity, cell viability by annexin V, and propidium iodide in HepG2 and by aquatic toxicity assays using daphnids. Both dyes tested positive in the Salmonella assay, and the suggestion was made that these compounds induce mainly frame-shift mutations and that the enzymes nitroreductase and O-acetyltransferase play an important role in the observed effect. In addition, it was shown that the presence of the chlorine substituent in Disperse Red 13 decreased the mutagenicity about 14 times when compared with Disperse Red 1, which shows the same structure as Disperse Red 13, but without the chlorine substituent. The presence of this substituent did not cause cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells, but toxicity to the water flea Daphnia similis increased in the presence of the chlorine substituent. These data suggest that the insertion of a chlorine substituent could be an alternative in the design of dyes with low-mutagenic potency, although the ecotoxicity should be carefully evaluated. Three welding procedures used to rebuild worn shafts in sugar cane mills were analysed: two submerged arc welding processes and one flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process. Sliding wear tests were in accordance with ASTM G 77 standard, using rings of welding material, blocks of bronze SAE 67, and oil as lubricant. The worn surfaces of rings and blocks were analysed by scanning electron microscopy to determine the wear mechanisms. High contact pressure, high operating temperature, and low relative speed were applied in sliding wear tests to match the conditions in sugar cane mills. Transferred material and evidence of adhesive junctions were detected. Additionally, hardened fragments produced abrasive grooves on the worn surfaces. The welding deposits that presented strong adhesion on the worn surface showed higher mass loss than the materials that presented more abrasive characteristics. Plastic mechanical properties were measured and related to the mass loss. The tested materials presented similar hardness but different yield stress and hardening coefficient. A relationship between wear, strain hardening coefficient, and yield stress was found. The welding deposit that presented the highest hardening coefficient showed the highest mass loss, with evidence of severe adhesion on the worn surface.

Background: The supraceliac aortic cross-clamping can be an option to save patients with hipovolemic shock due to abdominal trauma. However, this maneuver is associated with ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury strongly related to oxidative stress and reduction of nitric oxide bioavailability. Moreover, several studies demonstrated impairment in relaxation after I/R, but the time course of I/R necessary to induce vascular dysfunction is still controversial. We investigated whether 60 minutes of ischemia followed by 30 minutes of reperfusion do not change the relaxation of visceral arteries nor the plasma and renal levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitrite plus nitrate (NOx). Methods: Male mongrel dogs (n = 27) were randomly allocated in one of the three groups: sham (no clamping, n = 9), ischemia (supraceliac aortic cross-clamping for 60 minutes, n = 9), and I/R (60 minutes of ischemia followed by reperfusion for 30 minutes, n = 9). Relaxation of visceral arteries (celiac trunk, renal and superior mesenteric arteries) was studied in organ chambers. MDA and NOx concentrations were determined using a commercially available kit and an ozone-based chemiluminescence assay, respectively. Results: Both acetylcholine and calcium ionophore caused relaxation in endothelium-intact rings and no statistical differences were observed among the three groups. Sodium nitroprusside promoted relaxation in endothelium-denuded rings, and there were no inter-group statistical differences. Both plasma and renal concentrations of MDA and NOx showed no significant difference among the groups. Conclusion: Supraceliac aortic cross-clamping for 60 minutes alone and followed by 30 minutes of reperfusion did not impair relaxation of canine visceral arteries nor evoke biochemical alterations in plasma or renal tissue.

We report a comprehensive discussion of quantum interference effects due to the finite structure of neutral excitons in quantum rings and their first experimental corroboration observed in the optical recombinations. The signatures of built-in electric fields and temperature on quantum interference are demonstrated by theoretical models that describe the modulation of the interference pattern and confirmed by complementary experimental procedures.

The title compound, C(16)H(15)N(3)O(2)S, was synthesized by the reaction of 2-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-cyclohepta[b]thiophene-3-carbonitrile and o-fluoronitrobenzene. The thiophene and nitrophenyl rings and amino and carbonitrile groups are coplanar with a maximum deviation of 0.046 (2) angstrom and a dihedral angle of 0.92 (6)degrees between the rings. The cyclohepta ring adopts a chair conformation. Intramolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot S interactions occur. In the crystal, the molecules form layers that are linked by pi-pi stacking interactions between the thiophene and benzene rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.7089 (12) and 3.6170 (12) angstrom].

Background: Although mental changes are frequent in Wilson`s disease, severe psychiatric disorders occur uncommonly and usually accompany the neurological picture. There are few reports in the literature of Wilson`s disease patients with typical bipolar affective disorder (BPAD). Case report: The authors report the case of a patient with Wilson`s disease whose initial manifestation was a manic episode followed by depression. Tremor in the upper limbs appeared one year after the onset of symptoms. The diagnosis of Wilson`s disease was established three years after the first symptoms appeared, based on the neuropsychiatric picture, the detection of Kayser-Fleischer rings and the results of diagnostic tests indicating chronic liver disease and copper excess. ATP7B genotyping and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain with proton spectroscopy study were also performed. The patient became asymptomatic two years after starting treatment with penicillamine and remained non-symptomatic controlled during the eight-year follow-up period, without any specific treatment for the BPAD. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is a singular report of a case of Wilson`s disease in which a manic episode preceded the onset of neurological symptoms. The association between Wilson`s disease and bipolar disorder is discussed.
