A new approach for the synthesis of alpha,beta-unsaturated delta-lactones, a unit present in many natural products with interesting biological activities is described. The approach was based on the use of a vinyl telluride, and it is complementary to the methods using ring-closing metathesis. The sequence was performed in good overall yield with retention of the Z-double bond geometry. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The gas-phase ion/molecule reactions of F(-) and EtO(-) with Ge(OEt)(4) yield readily and exclusively pentacoordinated complexes XGe(OEt)(4)(-) (X = F, EtO) at pressures in the 10(-8) T range as observed by FT-ICR techniques. These hypervalent species are prone to undergo sequential fragmentations induced by infrared multiphoton excitation that lead to a variety of germyl and germanate anions. In the case of FGe(OEt)(4)(-), three primary competitive channels are observed in the IRMPD process that can be identified as (EtO)(3)GeO(-), F(EtO)(2)GeO(-) and (EtO)(3)Ge(-). Ab initio calculations have been carried out to characterize the primary fragmentation paths induced by IRMPD and the most favorable structure of the resulting anions. The gas-phase acidity of a number of these germanium-containing ions have been estimated by bracketing experiments and by theoretical calculations. Germanate anions such as (EtO)(3)GeO(-) undergo some interesting reactions with H(2)S to give rise to anions such as (EtO)(3)GeS(-) and (EtO)(2)Ge(OH)S(-). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A fast, high-yielding synthesis of diaryl ethers with use of mild and metal-free conditions has been developed. The scope includes bulky ortho-substituted diaryl ethers, which are difficult to obtain by metal-catalyzed protocols. Halo-substituents, racemization-prone amino acid derivatives, and heteroaromatics are also tolerated. The methodology is expected to be of high utility in the synthesis of complex molecules and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Tetrahydrofuran derivatives can be obtained by cyclo-functionalization of homoallylic alcohols bearing a terminal double bound by using [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]benzene (HTIB, Koser`s reagent) in the presence of a catalytic amount of 12 (20 mol %) in MeOH under mild conditions. This transformation is an overall 5-endo-trig cyclization, which occurs by two different pathways. The first is a 4-exo-trig cyclization followed by ring expansion, whereas the second is an electrophilic addition followed by a 5-endo-tet cyclization.

Microwave (MW)-assisted cellulose dissolution in ionic liquids (ILs) has routinely led either to incomplete biopolymer solubilization, or its degradation. We show that these problems can be avoided by use of low-energy MW heating, coupled with efficient stirring. Dissolution of microcrystalline cellulose in the IL 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride has been achieved without changing its degree of polymerization; regenerated cellulose showed pronounced changes in its index of crystallinity, surface area, and morphology. MW-assisted functionalization of MCC by ethanoic, propanoic, butanoic, pentanoic, and hexanoic anhydrides has been studied. Compared with conventional heating, MW irradiation has resulted in considerable decrease in dissolution and reaction times. The value of the degree of substitution (DS) was found to be DS(ethanoate) > DS(propanoate) > DS(butanoate). The values of DS(pentanoate) and DS(hexanoate) were found to be slightly higher than DS(ethanoate). This surprising dependence on the chain length of the acylating agent has been reported before, but not rationalized. On the basis of the rate constants and activation parameters of the hydrolysis of ethanoic, butanoic, and hexanoic anhydrides in aqueous acetonitrile (a model acyl transfer reaction), we suggest that this result may be attributed to the balance between two opposing effects, namely, steric crowding and (cooperative) hydrophobic interactions between the anhydride and the cellulosic surface, whose lipophilicity has increased, due to its partial acylation. Four ethanoate-based mixed esters were synthesized by the reaction with a mixture of the two anhydrides; the ethanoate moiety predominated in all products. The DS is reproducible and the IL is easily recycled. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 134-143, 2010

Homoallylic alcohols (primary, secondary, or tertiary containing an endocyclic or an exocyclic double bond) react with equimolar amounts of aldehydes (aliphatic or aromatic) and ketones (aliphatic) in the presence of 5 mol % of iodine. This Prins cyclization was used in the preparation of hexahydrobenzo[f]isochromenes and of a 4-hydroxy-tetrahydropyran, in 54-81% yield. The procedure is also efficient for an aza-Prins cyclization of a homoallylic sulfonamide and benzaldehyde, producing a hexahydrobenzo[f]isoquinoline. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new route to obtain the polyalkylated indole (+/-)-trans-trikentrin A was developed. The synthesis of this natural alkaloid features a thallium(III)mediated ring contraction reaction to obtain the trans-1,3-disubstituted five-membered ring in a diastereoselective manner. Thallium(III) is chemoselective in this rearrangement, reacting with the olefin without oxidation of the indole moiety. Other key transformations are the Bartoli`s reaction to construct the heterocyclic ring and a Heck coupling to add the carbons atom that will originate the nonaromatic cycle.

The stereoselective syntheses of cis conformationally constrained glutamate and aspartate analogues, containing an azetidine framework were accomplished from (S)-N-tosyl-2-phenylglycine in moderate overall yields. The key steps in these syntheses involved an efficient Wittig olefination of an azetidin-3-one, followed by a highly stereoselective rhodium catalyzed hydrogenation. The route could also be applied to the synthesis of a trans glutamate analogue, since epimerization of cis to trans isomer could be performed using DBU in toluene at reflux. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Catalysts containing NiO/MgO/ZrO(2) mixtures were synthesized by the polymerization method in a single step. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and physisorption of N(2) (BET) and then tested in the reforming of a model biogas (1.5CH4:1CO(2)) in the presence of air (1.5CH(4) + 1CO(2) + 0.25O(2)) at 750 degrees C for 6h. It was observed that the catalyst Ni20MZ performed better in catalytic processes than the well known catalysts, Ni/ZrO(2) and Ni/MgO, synthesized under the same conditions. The formation of solid solutions, MgO-ZrO(2) and NiO-MgO, increased the rate of conversion of reactants (CH(4) and CO(2)) into synthesis gas (H(2) + CO). The formation of oxygen vacancies (in samples containing ZrO(2) and MgO) seems to promote removal of the coke deposited on the nickel surface. The values of the H(2)/CO ratio were generally found to be slightly lower than stoichiometric, owing to the reverse water gas shift reaction occurring in parallel. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
