The concept of constitutional dynamic chemistry (CDC) based on the control of non-covalent interactions in supramolecular structures is promising for having a large impact on nanoscience and nanotechnology if adequate nanoscale manipulation methods are used. In this study, we demonstrate that the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique may be used to produce electroactive electrodes with ITO coated by tetrasulfonated nickel phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) alternated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) incorporating gold nanoparticles (AuNP), in which synergy has been achieved in the interaction between the nanoparticles and NiTsPc. The catalytic activity toward hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in multilayer films was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, where oxidation of H(2)O(2) led to increased currents in the PAH-AuNP/NiTsPc films for the electrochemical processes associated with the phthalocyanine ring and nickel at 0.52 and 0.81 V vs. SCE, respectively, while for PAH/NiTsPc films (without AuNP) only the first redox process was affected. In control experiments we found out that the catalytic activity was not solely due to the presence of AuNP, but rather to the nanoparticles inducing NiTsPc supramolecular structures that favored access to their redox sites, thus yielding strong charge transfer. The combined effects of NiTsPc and AuNP, which could only be observed in nanostructured LbL films, point to another avenue to pursue within the CDC paradigm.

This paper presents the characterization of poly(aniline) (PANI) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) coatings obtained by mixing PANI with PMMA aqueous dispersions (latex particles). These dispersions were characterized by using dynamic light scattering for sizing, zeta-potential analysis and thermal analysis. PMMA and PANI/PMMA dispersions show negative charged particles with zeta potential greater than |40| mV, a zeta-average diameter of 64 nm for pure PMMA and a bi-modal particle-size distribution centered at 45 and 120 nm for a mixture with 25% w/w of PANI. Films obtained by casting were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy and they show a conductivity increase upon PANI content reaching a value of 1 mS cm(-1) for a film with 25% w/w of PANI. In addition, Raman spectroscopy have shown the presence of the conducting form of PANI in the films and cyclic voltammetry experiments corroborated that they are electroactive in both acid and neutral solutions.

This work presents a study of the catalytic oxidation of ethanol on polycrystalline gold electrode in alkaline media. The investigation was carried out by means of chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The main goal was to investigate the early stages of ethanol electrooxidation, namely at fairly low potentials (E = 600 mV vs. RHE) and for moderate reaction times (t < 300 s). Chronoamperometric experiments show a current increase accompanying the increasing in the ethanol concentration up to about 2 M and then a slight decrease at 3 M. Adsorbed CO has been observed as early as about 200 mV vs. RHE and indicates that the cleavage of the C-C bond might occur, probably to a small extent, at very low overpotentials during ethanol adsorption on gold surface. The amount of dissolved acetate ions produced during the chronoamperomentry was followed by the asymmetric stretching band at 1558 cm(-1) as a function of time, and found to increase linearly with time up to 300 s. This allowed estimating the reaction order of acetate formation with respect to ethanol concentration.

Despite the fact that the majority of the catalytic electro-oxidation of small organic molecules presents oscillatory kinetics under certain conditions, there are few systematic studies concerning the influence of experimental parameters on the oscillatory dynamics. Of the studies available, most are devoted to C1 molecules and just some scattered data are available for C2 molecules. We present in this work a comprehensive study of the electro-oxidation of ethylene glycol on polycrystalline platinum surfaces and in alkaline media. The system was studied by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry, and the impact of parameters such as applied current, ethylene glycol concentration, and temperature were investigated. As in the case of other parent systems, the instabilities in this system were associated with a hidden negative differential resistance, as identified by impedance data. Very rich and robust dynamics were observed, including the presence of harmonic and mixed mode oscillations and chaotic states, in some parameter region. Oscillation frequencies of about 16 Hz characterized the fastest oscillations ever reported for the electro-oxidation of small organic molecules. Those high frequencies were strongly influenced by the electrolyte pH and far less affected by the EG concentration. The system was regularly dependent on temperature under voltammetric conditions but rather independent within the oscillatory regime.

The design, construction, and characterization of a portable opto-coupled potentiostat are presented. The potentiostat is battery-powered, managed by a microcontroller, which implements cyclic voltammetry (CV) using suitable sensor electrodes. Its opto-coupling permits a wide range of current measurements, varying from mA to nA. Two software interfaces were developed to perform the CV measurement: a virtual instrument for a personal computer (PC) and a C-base interface for personal digital assistant (PDA). The potentiostat has been evaluated by detection of potassium ferrocyanide in KCl medium, both with macro and microelectrodes. There was good agreement between the instrumental results and those from commercial equipment.

The polymetallic [Ru(3)O(CH(3)COO)(6)(py)(2)(BPE)Ru( bpy)(2)Cl](PF(6))(2) complex (bpy = 2,2`-bipyridine, BPE = trans- 1,2-bis(4-pyridil) ethylene and py = pyridine) was assembled by the combination of an electroactive [Ru(3)O] moiety with a [ Ru( bpy) 2( BPE) Cl] photoactive centre, and its structure was determined using positive ion electrospray (ESI-MS) and tandem mass (ESI-MS/MS) spectrometry. The [Ru(3)O(CH(3)COO)(6)(py)(2)(BPE)Ru(bpy)(2)Cl] (2+) doubly charged ion of m/z 732 was mass-selected and subject to 15 eV collision-induced dissociation, leading to a specific dissociation pattern, diagnostic of the complex structure. The electronic spectra display broad bands at 409, 491 and 692 nm ascribed to the [Ru(bpy)(2)(BPE)] charge-transfer bands and to the [Ru(3)O] internal cluster transitions. The cyclic voltammetry shows five reversible waves at - 1.07 V, 0.13 V, 1.17 V, 2.91 V and - 1.29 V (vs SHE) assigned to the [Ru(3)O](-1/0/+ 1/+ 2/+3) and to the bpy (0/-1) redox processes; also a wave is observed at 0.96 V, assigned to the Ru (+2/+ 3) pair. Despite the conjugated BPE bridge, the electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical results indicate only a weak coupling through the pi-system, and preliminary photophysical essays showed the compound decomposes under visible light irradiation.

We report on a convergent approach for the generation of dendrimers containing the [Ru3O(aC)(6)] electroactive core, of great interest as multielectron transfer catalysts. The proposed strategy is based on the generation of the trimeric complex [(Ru3O(ac)(6)(4-pic)(2)(pz))2-mu(2)-Ru3O(ac)(6)(CH3OH)](3+) (ac = acetate, 4-pic = 4-methylpyridine, pz = pyrazine). In this complex, the labile CH3OH ligand can be displaced by the bridging pyrazine ligand of [Ru3O(ac)(6)(pz)3](0), leading to the self-assembly of the [{[Ru3O(ac)(6)(4-pic)(2)(pz)](2)-mu(2)-Ru3O(ac)(6)(pz)}(3)- mu(3)-Ru3O(ac)(6)](n+) dendrimer containing 30 ruthenium atoms. The electrocatalytic activity of Pt and RuO(2) mixed electrodes of different compositions towards methanol oxidation was investigated. The catalysts were prepared by thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors and characterized by energy dispersive X-ray, scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry. This preparation method allowed obtaining uniform films with controlled stoichiometry and high surface area. Cyclic voltammetry experiments in the presence of methanol showed that mixed electrodes decreased the potential peak of methanol oxidation by approximately 100 mV (RHE) when compared to the electrode containing only Pt. In addition, voltammetric experiments indicated that the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode led to higher oxidation current densities at lower potentials. Chronoamperometry experiments confirmed the contribution of RuO(2) to the catalytic activity as well as the better performance of the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode composition. Formic acid and CO(2) were identified as being the reaction products formed in the electrolysis performed at 400 and 600 mV. The relative formation of CO(2) was favored in the electrolysis performed at 400 mV (RHE) with the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode. The presence of RuO(2) in Pt-Ru-based electrodes is important for improving the catalytic activity towards methanol electrooxidation. Moreover, the thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors seems to be a promising route for the production of catalysts applicable to DMFC. (C) 2009 International Association for Hydrogen Energy. The electrochemical performance of carbon fibers (CF) and boron-doped diamond electrodes grown on carbon fiber substrate (BDD/CF) was studied. CF substrates were obtained from polyacrylonitrile precursor heat treated at two different temperatures of 1000 and 2000 degrees C to produce the desirable CF carbon graphitization index. This graphitization process influenced the CF conductivity and its chemical surface, also analyzed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. These three-dimensional CF structures allowed a high incorporation of diamond films compared to other carbon substrates such as glass carbon or HOPG. The electrochemical responses, from these four classes of electrodes, were evaluated focusing their application as electrical double-layer capacitors using cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurements. Cyclic voltammetry results revealed that the electrode formed from BDD grown on CF-2000 presented a typical capacitor behavior with the best rectangular shape, compared to those electrodes of CF or BDD/CF-1000. Furthermore, the BDD/CF-2000 electrode presented the lowest impedance, associated to its significant capacitance value of 1940 mu F/cm(2) taking into account the BDD films. This behavior was attributed to the strong dependence between diamond coating texture and the CF graphitization temperature. The largest surface area of BDD/CF-2000 was promoted by its singular film growth mechanism associated to the substrate chemical surface. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, a fast, non destructive voltammetric method for cocaine detection in acetonitrile medium using a platinum disk electrode chemically modified with cobalt-hexacyanoferrate (CoHCFe) film is described. The deposition of CoHCFe film at platinum disk (working electrode) was carried out in aqueous solution containing NaClO(4) at 0.1 mol L(-1) as supporting electrolite. Stability studies of the film and subsequent voltammetric analysis of cocaine were made in acetonitrile medium with NaClO4 at 0.1 mol L(-1) as supporting electrolite. A reversible interaction between cocaine and CoHCFe at the film produces a proportional decrease of original peak current, due to the formation of a complex between cocaine and cobalt ions, with subsequent partial passivation of the film surface, being the intensity of current decrease used as analytical signal for cocaine. A linear dependence of cocaine detection was carried out in the range from 2.4 x 10 x 4 to 1.5 x 10(-3) mol L(-1), with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.994 and a detection limit of 1.4 x 10 x 4 mol L(-1). The analysis of confiscated samples by the proposed method indicated cocaine levels from 37% to 95% (m/m) and these results were validated by comparison to HPLC technique, being obtained good correlation between both methods. The trans-[RUCl(2)(L)(4)], trans-[Ru(NO)Cl (L)(4)](PF(6))(2) (L = isonicotinamide and 4-acetylpyridine) and trans-[Ru(NO)(OH)(py)(4)]Cl(2) (py = pyridine) complexes have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, UV-visible, infrared, and (1)H NMR spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry. The MLCT band energies of trans-[RUCl(2)(L)(4) increase in the order 4-acpy < isn < py. The reduction potentials of trans-[RuCl(2)(L)(4)] and trans-[Ru(NO)Cl(L)(4)](2+) increase in the order py < isn < 4-acpy. The stretching band frequency. v(NO), of the nitrosyl complexes ranges from 1913 to 1852 cm(-1) indicating a nitrosonium character for the NO ligand. Due to the large pi-acceptor ability of the equatorial ligands, the coordinated water is much more acidic in the water soluble trans-[Ru(NO)(H(2)O)(py)(4)](3+) than in trans-[Ru(NO)(H(2)O)(NH(3))(4)](3+) (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this work was to test the hypothesis that the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) and noradrenergic neurotransmission therein mediate cardiovascular responses to acute restraint stress in rats. Bilateral microinjection of the non-specific synaptic blocker CoCl2 (0.1nmol/100nl) into the BST enhanced the heart rate (HR) increase associated with acute restraint without affecting the blood pressure increase, indicating that synapses within the BST influence restraint-evoked HR changes. BST pretreatment with the selective 1-adrenoceptor antagonist WB4101 (15nmol/100nl) caused similar effects to cobalt, indicating that local noradrenergic neurotransmission mediates the BST inhibitory influence on restraint-related HR responses. BST treatment with equimolar doses of the 2-adrenoceptor antagonist RX821002 or the -adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol did not affect restraint-related cardiovascular responses, reinforcing the inference that 1-adrenoceptors mediate the BST-related inhibitory influence on HR responses. Microinjection of WB4101 into the BST of rats pretreated intravenously with the anticholinergic drug homatropine methyl bromide (0.2mg/kg) did not affect restraint-related cardiovascular responses, indicating that the inhibitory influence of the BST on the restraint-evoked HR increase could be related to an increase in parasympathetic activity. Thus, our results suggest an inhibitory influence of the BST on the HR increase evoked by restraint stress, and that this is mediated by local 1-adrenoceptors. The results also indicate that such an inhibitory influence is a result of parasympathetic activation.

Background and purpose: We have previously shown that noradrenaline microinjected into the bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BST) elicited pressor and bradycardiac responses in unanaesthetized rats. In the present study, we investigated the subtype of adrenoceptors that mediates the cardiovascular response to noradrenaline microinjection into the BST. Experimental approach: Cardiovascular responses following noradrenaline microinjection into the BST of male Wistar rats were studied before and after BST pretreatment with different doses of the selective alpha(1)-adrenoceptor antagonist WB4101, the alpha(2)-adrenoceptor antagonist RX821002, the combination of WB4101 and RX821002, the non-selective beta-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol, the selective beta(1)-adrenoceptor antagonist CGP20712 or the selective beta(2)-adrenoceptor antagonist ICI118,551. Key results: Noradrenaline microinjected into the BST of unanaesthetized rats caused pressor and bradycardiac responses. Pretreatment of the BST with different doses of either WB4101 or RX821002 only partially reduced the response to noradrenaline. However, the response to noradrenaline was blocked when WB4101 and RX821002 were combined. Pretreatment with this combination also shifted the resulting dose-effect curve to the left, clearly showing a potentiating effect of this antagonist combination. Pretreatment with different doses of either propranolol or CGP20712 increased the cardiovascular responses to noradrenaline microinjected into the BST. Pretreatment with ICI118,551 did not affect cardiovascular responses to noradrenaline. Conclusion and implications: The present results indicate that alpha(1) and alpha(2)-adrenoceptors mediate the cardiovascular responses to noradrenaline microinjected into the BST. In addition, they point to an inhibitory role played by the activation of local beta(1)-adrenoceptors in the cardiovascular response to noradrenaline microinjected into the BST.

Alimentary habits of free-living Psittaciformes vary significantly among different species. Amazona pretrei is under risk of extinction and has very specific free-living dietary habits, which are based on Parana pine seeds. Hemosiderosis is a pathologic process characterized by intracellular accumulation of iron without other evident lesions. It is associated with increased prevalence of infections, neoplasms, and hepatopathies. The purpose of this study was to quantify hepatic hemosiderin deposits in captive A. pretrei and verify their association with nutritional parameters. Liver samples were processed for histopathology and stained with Prussian blue. The sections were analyzed by computerized morphometry to quantify the hepatic hemosiderin deposits. The hepatic hemosiderosis rates showed positive correlation with age and time in captivity. These results suggest that the menus and commercial rations for Psittacidae must be carefully revised.

Background Iron accumulation was investigated qualitatively and quantitatively in the liver of 15 captive Brachyteles spp. Methods Hepatic hemosiderosis index (HHI) was determined as the area percentage of the liver parenchyma occupied by hemosiderin and ferritin deposits, through computerized histomorphometric analysis of Prussian blue-stained histologic sections. Results All studied animals presented liver hemosiderosis, and HHI ranged from 0.2% to 41.7%. There were no significant differences in HHI between muriqui species or genders, and no correlations were detected among HHI and age, time in captivity or body mass. Iron deposits were accompanied by other hepatic disorders. Conclusions This is the first study addressing the occurrence and consequences of iron overloading in the liver of muriquis. We propose that hemosiderosis may act as a contribute factor for the development of hepatic injuries. Further studies are advised to clarify the role of diet in the pathogenesis of hemosiderosis in these atelids.
