This study was designed to identify perseverative reaching tendencies in children with intellectual disabilities (ID), over a period of 1 year, by using a version of the Piagetian ""A not B"" task modified by Smith, Thelen, Titzer, and McLin (1999). Nine children (4.8 years old at the beginning of the study) with intellectual disabilities (ID) (eight with mild ID; one with moderate ID) were assessed every 3 months for approximately 1 year, totaling four assessments. The results indicate that in a majority of the cases perseveration was resilient, and that the visual system decoupled from the reaching, especially towards the later assessment periods at the end of the year. Across assessment periods variability seemed to increase in each trial (A1 through B2) for reached target. These individuals, vulnerable to distraction and attention and to short-term memory deficits, are easily locked into rigid modes of motor habits. They are susceptible to perseveration while performing simple task contexts that are typically designed for 10- to 12-month-old, normally-developing infants, therefore creating strong confinements to stable, rigid modes of elementary forms of behavior. This work describes the development of an engineering approach based upon a toughness scaling methodology incorporating the effects of weld strength mismatch on crack-tip driving forces. The approach adopts a nondimensional Weibull stress, (sigma) over bar (w), as a the near-tip driving force to correlate cleavage fracture across cracked weld configurations with different mismatch conditions even though the loading parameter (measured by J) may vary widely due to mismatch and constraint variations. Application of the procedure to predict the failure strain for an overmatch girth weld made of an API X80 pipeline steel demonstrates the effectiveness of the micromechanics approach. Overall, the results lend strong support to use a Weibull stress based procedure in defect assessments of structural welds.

The procedure for online process control by attributes consists of inspecting a single item at every m produced items. It is decided on the basis of the inspection result whether the process is in-control (the conforming fraction is stable) or out-of-control (the conforming fraction is decreased, for example). Most articles about online process control have cited the stoppage of the production process for an adjustment when the inspected item is non-conforming (then the production is restarted in-control, here denominated as corrective adjustment). Moreover, the articles related to this subject do not present semi-economical designs (which may yield high quantities of non-conforming items), as they do not include a policy of preventive adjustments (in such case no item is inspected), which can be more economical, mainly if the inspected item can be misclassified. In this article, the possibility of preventive or corrective adjustments in the process is decided at every m produced item. If a preventive adjustment is decided upon, then no item is inspected. On the contrary, the m-th item is inspected; if it conforms, the production goes on, otherwise, an adjustment takes place and the process restarts in-control. This approach is economically feasible for some practical situations and the parameters of the proposed procedure are determined minimizing an average cost function subject to some statistical restrictions (for example, to assure a minimal levelfixed in advanceof conforming items in the production process). Numerical examples illustrate the proposal.

The aim of this paper is to present an economical design of an X chart for a short-run production. The process mean starts equal to mu(0) (in-control, State I) and in a random time it shifts to mu(1) > mu(0) (out-of-control, State II). The monitoring procedure consists of inspecting a single item at every m produced ones. If the measurement of the quality characteristic does not meet the control limits, the process is stopped, adjusted, and additional (r - 1) items are inspected retrospectively. The probabilistic model was developed considering only shifts in the process mean. A direct search technique is applied to find the optimum parameters which minimizes the expected cost function. Numerical examples illustrate the proposed procedure. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In each of the title compounds, R[Ph(Cl)C=(H)C]TeCl(2), R = nBu (1) and Ph (2), the primary geometry about the Te(IV) atom is a pseudo-trigonal-bipyramidal arrangement, with two Cl atoms in apical positions, and the lone pair of electrons and C atoms in the equatorial plane. As the Te(IV) is involved in two, an intra- and an inter-molecular, Te center dot center dot center dot Cl interactions the coordination geometry might be considered as a Psi-pentagonal bipyramid in each case. In addition, in (2) there is a hint of a Te center dot center dot center dot pi interaction (Te center dot center dot center dot C = 3.911(3) A). The key feature in the crystal structure of both compounds is the formation of supramolecular chains mediated by Te center dot center dot center dot Cl contacts. The present work describes the crystal structure, vibrational spectra, and theoretical calculations of ammonium salts of 3,5-bis-(dicyanomethylene)cyclopentane-1,2,4-trionate, (NH(4))(2)(C(11)N(4)O(3)) [(NH(4))(2)CV], also known as ammonium croconate violet. This compound crystallizes in triclinic P (1) over bar and contains two water molecules per unit formula. The crystal packing is stabilized by hydrogen bonds involving water molecules and ammonium cations, giving rise to a 3D polymeric arrangement. In this structure, a pi-stacking interaction is not observed, as the smaller centroid-centroid distance is 4.35 angstrom. Ab initio electronic structure calculations under periodic boundary conditions were performed to predict vibrational and electronic properties. The vibrational analysis was used to assist the assignments of the Raman and infrared bands. The solid structure was optimized and characterized as a minimum in the potential-energy surface. The stabilizing intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the crystal Structure were characterized by difference charge-density analysis. The analysis of the density of states of (NH(4))(2)CV gives an energy gap of 1.4 eV with a significant contribution of carbon and nitrogen 2p states for valence and conduction bands.

Background. Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas is a distinctive pancreatic neoplasm with low metastatic potential. This study examines clinical differences and prognosis between male and female Patients. Methods. The medical records of 34 consecutive patients with pancreatic solid pseudopapillaly neoplasms between 1990 and 2006 were reviewed. Whenever feasible, organ-preserving operation was performed. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square and Student t test. Results. There were 27 women (79%) and seven men (21%) with median age of 23 years. Mean diameter of the tumor was 7 cm. Tumor size tended to be smaller in patients treated in more recent years. Conservative surgery was possible in I I patients including spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy in 3, central pancreatectomy in 5, and enucleation in 3 patients. Median hospital stay was 11 days, morbidity rate was 62%, including 17 patients with grade A pancreatic fistula, and there was no operative mortality. Mean follow-up time was 84 months. Tumor recurred in 2 patients (6%). Overall late morbidity rate was 12%. At the time of diagnosis, age was ((x) over bar +/- SD) higher among male patients (25 +/- 2 years vs 37 +/- 7 years, P < .05) with no difference in tumor size. The neoplasms were more aggressive in male Patients; therefore, conservative surgery was less likely. There was no correlation between tumor aggressiveness and age of the patient or size of tumor. Conclusion. This is the first single center study to demonstrate that solid pseudopapillary neoplasms in male patients have distinct Patterns Of onset and aggressiveness when compared with female patients. Although valid prognostic criteria are still lacking, it appears that male patients may be best treated by more radical operation and should be observed more closely during follow-up.

In this note, we present three independent results within generalized complex analysis (in the Colombeau sense). The first of them deals with non-removable singularities; we construct a generalized function u on an open subset Omega of C(n), which is not a holomorphic generalized function on Omega but it is a holomorphic generalized function on Omega\S, where S is a hypersurface contained in Omega. The second result shows the existence of a holomorphic generalized function with prescribed values in the zero-set of a classical holomorphic function. The last result states the existence of a compactly supported solution to the (partial derivative) over bar operator.
Continuity of the dynamics in a localized large diffusion problem with nonlinear boundary conditions
Resumo:
This paper is concerned with singular perturbations in parabolic problems subjected to nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions. We consider the case for which the diffusion coefficient blows up in a subregion Omega(0) which is interior to the physical domain Omega subset of R(n). We prove, under natural assumptions, that the associated attractors behave continuously as the diffusion coefficient blows up locally uniformly in Omega(0) and converges uniformly to a continuous and positive function in Omega(1) = (Omega) over bar\Omega(0). We consider attractors A(eta), eta epsilon [0, 1], corresponding to a singularly perturbed damped wave equation u(tt) + 2 eta A(1/2)u(t) + au(t) + Au = f (u) in H-0(1)(Omega) x L-2 (Omega), where Omega is a bounded smooth domain in R-3. For dissipative nonlinearity f epsilon C-2(R, R) satisfying vertical bar f ``(s)vertical bar <= c(1 + vertical bar s vertical bar) with some c > 0, we prove that the family of attractors {A(eta), eta >= 0} is upper semicontinuous at eta = 0 in H1+s (Omega) x H-s (Omega) for any s epsilon (0, 1). For dissipative f epsilon C-3 (R, R) satisfying lim(vertical bar s vertical bar) (->) (infinity) f ``(s)/s = 0 we prove that the attractor A(0) for the damped wave equation u(tt) + au(t) + Au = f (u) (case eta = 0) is bounded in H-4(Omega) x H-3(Omega) and thus is compact in the Holder spaces C2+mu ((Omega) over bar) x C1+mu((Omega) over bar) for every mu epsilon (0, 1/2). As a consequence of the uniform bounds we obtain that the family of attractors {A(eta), eta epsilon [0, 1]} is upper and lower semicontinuous in C2+mu ((Omega) over bar) x C1+mu ((Omega) over bar) for every mu epsilon (0, 1/2). We use QCD sum rules to calculate the branching ratio for the production of the meson X(3872) in the decay B -> X(3872)K, assumed to be a mixture between charmonium and exotic molecular vertical bar c (q) over bar vertical bar vertical bar q (c) over bar vertical bar states with J(PC) = 1(++). We find that in a small range for the values of the mixing angle, 5 degrees <= theta <= 13 degrees, we get the branching ratio B(B -> XK) = (1.00 +/- 0.68) x 10(-5), which is in agreement with the experimental upper limit. This result is compatible with the analysis of the mass and decay width of the mode J/psi(n pi) and the radiative decay mode J/psi gamma performed in the same approach. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We use QCD sum rules to study the possible existence of a D(s)(D) over bar* - D(s)*(D) over bar molecule with the quantum number J(PC) = 1(++). We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension eight and work at leading order in alpha(s). We obtain m(DsD*) = (3.96 +/- 0.10) GeVaround 100 MeV above the mass of the meson X(3872). The proposed state is a natural generalized state to the strangeness sector of the X(3872), which was also found to be consistent with a multiquark state from a previous QCD sum rule analysis.

We use the QCD sum rules to evaluate the mass of a possible scalar mesonic state that couples to a molecular D(s)*(D) over bar (s)* current. We find a mass m(Ds)*(Ds)* = (4.14 +/- 0.09) GeV, which is in an excellent agreement with the recently observed Y(4140) charmonium state. We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension-eight, we work at leading order in alpha(s) and we keep terms which are linear in the strange quark mass m(s). We also consider a molecular D*(D) over bar* current and we obtain m m(D)*(D)* = (4.13 +/- 0.10), around 200 MeV above the mass of the Y(3930) charmonium state. We conclude that it is possible to describe the Y(4140) structure as a D(s)*(D) over bar (s)* molecular state or even as a mixture of D(s)*(D) over bar (s)* and D*(D) over bar* molecular states. Using the QCD sum rules we test if the charmonium-like structure Y(4274), observed in the J/psi phi invariant mass spectrum, can be described with a D(s)(D) over bar (s0)(2317)+ h.c. molecular current with J(PC) = 0(-+). We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension ten and we work at leading order in alpha(s). We keep terms which are linear in the strange quark mass m(s). The mass obtained for such state is mD(s)D(s0) = (4.78 +/- 0.54) GeV. We also consider a molecular 0(-+) D (D) over bar (0)(2400)+ h.c. current and we obtain m(DD0) = (4.55 +/- 0.49) GeV. Our study shows that the newly observed Y(4274) in the J/psi phi invariant mass spectrum can be, considering the uncertainties, described using a molecular charmonium current. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We use QCD sum rules to test the nature of the recently observed mesons Y(4260), Y(4350) and Y(4660), assumed to be exotic four-quark (c (c) over barq (q) over bar) or (c (c) over bars (s) over bar) states with J(PC)= 1(--). We work at leading order in alpha(s), consider the contributions of higher dimension condensates and keep terms which are linear in the strange quark mass m(s). We find for the (c (c) over bars (s) over bar) state a mass in m(Y) = (4.65 +/- 0.10) GeV which is compatible with the experimental candidate Y (4660), while for the (c (c) over barq (q) over bar) state we find a mass in m(Y) = (4.49 +/- 0.11) GeV, which is still consistent with the mass of the experimental candidate Y(4350). With the tetraquark structure we are working we cannot explain the Y(4260) as a tetraquark state. We also consider molecular D(s0)(D) over bar (s)* and D(0)(D) over bar* states. For the D(s0)(D) over bar (s)* molecular state we get m(Ds0 (D) over bars*) = (4.42 +/- 0.10) GeV which is consistent, considering the errors, with the mass of the meson Y(4350) and for the D(0)(D) over bar* molecular state we get m(D0 (D) over bar*) = (4.27 +/- 0.10) GeV in excellent agreement with the mass of the meson Y(4260).
