Polarization measurements were conducted to monitor the corrosion behavior of superduplex stainless steel ASTM A995M-Gr.SA/EN 10283-Mat#1.4469(GX2CrNiMo26-7-4) when exposed to a) an electrolyte containing 22,700 parts per million (ppm) of chloride ions at seven different temperatures and b) an electrolyte at 25 GC and different chloride ion concentrations (5800, 22,700, 58,000 and 80,000 ppm of Cl(-)). The polarization curves indicate that the passive films formed are only slightly affected by NaCl concentration, but the pitting potential decreases drastically increasing the temperature, in particular >60 degrees C. The image analysis of the microstructure after potentiodynamic polarization showed that the pitting number and size vary in function of the temperature of the tested medium. Nyquist diagrams were determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to characterize the resistance of the passive layer. According to Nyquist plots, the arc polarization resistance decreases increasing the temperature due to a catalytic degradation of the oxide passive films. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Hydrophobic agents are surface protection materials capable of increasing the angle of contact between the water and the concrete surface. For this reason, hydrophobic agents reduce water (in liquid form) penetration in concrete. Therefore, many European construction regulating agencies recommend this treatment in their maintenance policy. Nonetheless, there continues to be a gap in the understanding about which transport mechanisms of the concrete are modified by the hidrophobic agents. The aim of this study was to fill this gap in regards to reinforced concrete structures inserted in a marine environment. To this end, certain tests were used: Two involving permeability mechanism, one determining capillary absorption, and the last, a migration test used to estimate the chloride diffusion coefficient in saturated condition. Results indicated the efficacy of the hydrophobic agents in cases where capillary suction is the mechanism of water penetration (reduced by 2.12 and 7.0 times, depending of the product). However, when the transport mechanism is permeability this product is not advisable. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the chloride diffusion coefficient (in saturated condition) is reduced by the hydrophobic agents, however, the magnitude of this reduction is minor (reduced by 11% and 17%, depending on the product).

Wear behavior of coatings has usually been described in terms of mechanical properties such as hardness (H) and effective elastic modulus (E*). Alternatively, an energy approach appears as a promising analysis taking into account the influence of those properties. In a nanoindentation test, the dissipated energy depends not only on the hardness and elastic modulus, but also on the elastic recovery (W(e)). This work aims to establish a relation between plastic deformation energy (E(p)) during depth-sensing indentation method and the grooving resistance of coatings in nanoscratch tests. An energy dissipation coefficient (K(d)) was defined, calculated as the ratio of the plastic to the total deformation energy (E(p)/E(t)), which represents the energy dissipation of materials. Reactive depositions using titanium as the target and nitrogen and methane as reactive gases were obtained by triode magnetron sputtering, in order to assess wear and nanoindentation data. A topographical, chemical and microstructural characterization has been conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), wave dispersion spectroscopy (WDS), scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. Nanoscratch results showed that the groove depth was well correlated to the energy dissipation coefficient of the coatings. On the other hand, a reduction in the coefficient was found when the elastic recovery was increased. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we studied the mixture of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), a commercial polymer, with monobasic potassium phosphate (KDP), a piezoelectric salt, as a possible novel material in the fabrication of a low cost, easy-to-make,flexible pressure sensing device. The mixture between KDP and PEDOT: PSS was painted in a flexible polyester substrate and dried. Afterwards, I x V curves were carried out. The samples containing KDP presented higher values of current in smaller voltages than the PEDOT: PSS without KDP. This can mean a change in the chain arrays. Other results showed that the material responds to directly applied pressure to the sample that can be useful to sensors fabrication. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Several aspects of photoperception and light signal transduction have been elucidated by studies with model plants. However, the information available for economically important crops, such as Fabaceae species, is scarce. In order to incorporate the existing genomic tools into a strategy to advance soybean research, we have investigated publicly available expressed sequence tag ( EST) sequence databases in order to identify Glycine max sequences related to genes involved in light-regulated developmental control in model plants. Approximately 38,000 sequences from open-access databases were investigated, and all bona fide and putative photoreceptor gene families were found in soybean sequence databases. We have identified G. max orthologs for several families of transcriptional regulators and cytoplasmic proteins mediating photoreceptor-induced responses, although some important Arabidopsis phytochrome-signaling components are absent. Moreover, soybean and Arabidopsis gene-family homologs appear to have undergone a distinct expansion process in some cases. We propose a working model of light perception, signal transduction and response-eliciting in G. max, based on the identified key components from Arabidopsis. These results demonstrate the power of comparative genomics between model systems and crop species to elucidate several aspects of plant physiology and metabolism.

Highly weathered soils represent about 3 billion ha of the tropical region. Oxisols represent about 60% of the Brazilian territory (more than 5 million km 2), in areas of great agricultural importance. Soil organic carbon (SOC) can be responsible for more than 80% of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of highly weathered soils, such as Oxisols and Ultisols. The objective of this study was to estimate the contribution of the SOC to the CEC of Brazilian soils from different orders. Surface samples (0.0 to 0.2 m) of 30 uncultivated soils (13 Oxisols, 6 Ultisols, 5 Alfisols, 3 Entisols, I Histosol, 1 Inceptisol. and I Molisol), under native forests and from reforestation sites from Sao Paulo State, Brazil, were collected in order to obtain a large variation of (electro)chemical, physical, and mineralogical soil attributes. Total content of SOC was quantified by titulometric and colorimetric methods. Effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) was obtained by two methods: the indirect method-summation-estimated the ECECi from the sum of basic cations (Ca+ Mg+ K+ Na) and exchangeable Al; and the direct ECECd obtained by the compulsive exchange method, using unbuffered BaCl2 solution. The contribution of SOC to the soil CEC was estimated by the Bennema statistical method. The amount of SOC var ied from 6.6 g kg(-1) to 213.4 g kg(-1). while clay contents varied from 40 g kg(-1) to 716 g kg(-1). Soil organic carbon contents were strongly associated to the clay contents, suggesting that clay content was the primary variable in controling the variability of SOC contents in the samples. Cation exchange capacity varied from 7.0 mmol(c) kg(-1) to 137.8 mmol(c) kg(-1) and had a positive Correlation with SOC. The mean contribution (per grain) of the SOC (1.64 mmol(c)) for the soil CEC was more than 44 times higher than the contribution of the clay fraction (0.04 mmol(c),). A regression model that considered the SOC content as the only significant variable explained 60% of the variation in the soil total CEC. The importance of SOC was related to soil pedogenetic process, since its contribution to the soil CEC was more evident in Oxisols with predominance of Fe and Al (oxihydr)oxides in the mineral fraction or in Ultisols, that presented illuviated clay. The influence of SOC in the sign and in the magnitude of the net charge of soils reinforce the importance of agricultural management systems that preserve high levels of SOC, in order to improve their sustainability.

Connectivity of the glycocalyx covering of small communities of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria deposited on hydrophilic mica plates was imaged by atomic force microscopy. When part of the coverage was removed by water rinsing, an insoluble structure formed by corrals surrounding each individual bacterium was observed. A collective ring structure with clustered bacteria (>= 3) was observed, which indicates that the bacteria perceived the neighborhood in order to grow a protective structure that results in smaller production of exopolysaccharides material. The most surprising aspect of these collective corral structures was that they occur at a low bacterial cell density. The deposited layers were also analyzed by confocal Raman microscopy and shown to contain polysaccharides, protein, and glucoronic acid.

This paper reports a method for the analysis of secondary metabolites stored in glandular trichomes, employing negative ion `chip-based` nanospray tandem mass spectrometry. The analyses of glandular trichomes from Lychnophora ericoides, a plant endemic to the Brazilian `cerrado` and used in traditional medicine as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent, led to the identification of five flavonoids (chrysin, pinocembrin, pinostrobin, pinobanksin and 3-O-acetylpinobanksin) by direct infusion of the extracts of glandular trichomes into the nanospray ionisation source. All the flavonoids have no oxidation at ring B, which resulted in a modification of the fragmentation pathways compared with that of the oxidised 3,4-dihydroflavonoids already described in the literature. The absence of the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant di-C-glucosylflavone vicenin-2, or any other flavonoid glycosides, in the glandular trichomes was also demonstrated. The use of the,`chip-based` nanospray QqTOF apparatus is a new fast and useful tool for the identification of secondary metabolites stored in the glandular trichomes, which can be useful for chemotaxonomic studies based on metabolites from glandular trichomes. In this work, we disrupted one of three putative phosphatidylinositol phospholipase C genes of Aspergillus nidulans and studied its effect on carbon source sensing linked to vegetative mitotic nuclear division. We showed that glucose does not affect nuclear division rates during early vegetative conidial germination (6-7 h) in either the wild type or the plcA-deficient mutant. Only after 8 h of cultivation on glucose did the mutant strain present some decrease in nuclear duplication. However, decreased nuclear division rates were observed in the wild type when cultivated in media amended with polypectate, whereas our plcA-deficient mutant did not show slow nuclear duplication rates when grown on this carbon source, even though it requires induction and secretion of multiple pectinolytic enzymes to be metabolized. Thus, plcA appears to be directly linked to high-molecular-weight carbon source sensing.

The present work describes the crystal structure, vibrational spectra, and theoretical calculations of ammonium salts of 3,5-bis-(dicyanomethylene)cyclopentane-1,2,4-trionate, (NH(4))(2)(C(11)N(4)O(3)) [(NH(4))(2)CV], also known as ammonium croconate violet. This compound crystallizes in triclinic P (1) over bar and contains two water molecules per unit formula. The crystal packing is stabilized by hydrogen bonds involving water molecules and ammonium cations, giving rise to a 3D polymeric arrangement. In this structure, a pi-stacking interaction is not observed, as the smaller centroid-centroid distance is 4.35 angstrom. Ab initio electronic structure calculations under periodic boundary conditions were performed to predict vibrational and electronic properties. The vibrational analysis was used to assist the assignments of the Raman and infrared bands. The solid structure was optimized and characterized as a minimum in the potential-energy surface. The stabilizing intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the crystal Structure were characterized by difference charge-density analysis. The analysis of the density of states of (NH(4))(2)CV gives an energy gap of 1.4 eV with a significant contribution of carbon and nitrogen 2p states for valence and conduction bands.

Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress influencing plant productivity worldwide. Schinopsis quebracho colorado is one of the most important woody species in the Gran Chaco, an and and salt-prone subtropical biome of South America. To gain a better understanding of the physiological mechanisms that allow plant establishment under salt conditions, germination and seedling growth of S. quebracho colorado were examined under treatment with a range of NaCl solutions (germination: 0-300 mmol l(-1) NaCl; seedling growth: 0-200 mmol l(-1) NaCl). The aim was to test the hypothesis that S. quebracho colorado is a glycophite that shows different salt tolerance responses with development stage. Proline content, total soluble carbohydrates and Na+, K+ and Cl- concentrations in leaves and roots of seedlings, and the chlorophyll concentration and relative water content of leaves were measured. Germination was not affected by 100 mmol l(-1) NaCl, but decreased at a concentration of 200 mmol l(-1). At 300 mmol l(-1) NaCl, germination did not occur. Seedling growth decreased drastically with increasing salinity. An increase in NaCl from 0 to 100 mmol l(-1) also significantly reduced the leaf relative water content by 22% and increased the proline concentration by 60% in roots. In contrast, total soluble carbohydrates were not significantly affected by salinity. Seedlings showed a sodium exclusion capacity, and there was an inverse correlation between Cl- concentration and the total chlorophyll concentration. S. quebracho colorado was more tolerant to salinity during germination than in the seedling phase. The results suggest that this increased tolerance during germination might, in part, be the result of lower sensitivity to high tissue Na+ concentrations. The significant increment of proline in the roots suggests the positive role of this amino acid as a compatible solute in balancing the accumulation of Na+ and Cl- as a result of salinity. These results help clarify the physiological mechanisms that allow establishment of S. quebracho colorado on salt-affected soils in arid and semi-arid Gran Chaco. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Reactions of the model acylium ion (CH3)(2)N-C+=O with acyclic, exocyclic, and Spiro acetals of the general formula (RO)-O-1-(CRR4)-R-3-OR2-upole mass spectrometry. Characteristic intrinsic reactivities were observed for each of these classes of acetals. The two most Characteristic intrinsic reactivities were observed for each of these classes of acetals. The two most common reactions observed were hydride and alkoxy anion [(RO-)-O-1 and (RO-)-O-2] abstraction. Other specific reactions were also observed: (a) a secondary polar [4(+) + 2] cycloaddition for acetals bearing alpha,beta-unsaturated R-3 or R-4 substituents and (b) OH- abstraction for exocyclic and spiro acetals. These structurally diagnostic reactions, in conjunction with others observed previously for cyclic acetals, are shown to reveal the class of the acetal molecule and its ring type and substituents and to permit their recognition and distinction from other classes of isomeric molecules.

WO(3)/chitosan and WO(3)/chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) films were prepared by the layer-by-layer method. The presence of chitosan enabled PEO to be carried into the self-assembled structure, contributing to an increase in the Li(+) diffusion rate. On the basis of the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and the quadratic logistic equation (QLE), a spectroelectrochemical method was used for determination of the ""optical"" diffusion coefficient (D(op)), enabling analysis of the Li(+) diffusion rate and, consequently, the coloration front rate in these host matrices. The D(op) values within the WO(3)/chitosan/PEO film were significantly higher than those within the WO(3)/chitosan film, mainly for higher values of injected charge. The presence of PEO also ensured larger accessibility to the electroactive sites, in accordance with the method employed here. Hence, this spectroelectrochemical method allowed us to separate the contribution of the diffusion process from the number of accessible electroactive sites in the materials, thereby aiding a better understanding of the useful electrochemical and electrochromic properties of these films for use in electrochromic devices. Layer-by-layer (LbL) nanocomposite films from TiO(2) nanoparticles and tungsten-based oxides (WO(x)H(y)), as well as dip-coating films of TiO(2) nano particles, were prepared and investigated by electrochemical techniques under visible light beams, aiming to evaluate the lithium ion storage and chromogenic properties. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images were obtained for morphological characterization of the Surface of the materials, which have similar roughness. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry measurements indicated high storage capacity of lithium ions in the LbL nanocomposite compared with the dip-coating film, which was attributed to the faster lithium ion diffusion rate within the self-assembled matrix. On the basis of the data obtained from galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), the values of lithium ion diffusion coefficient (D(Li)) for TiO(2)/WO(x)H(y) were larger compared with those for TiO(2). The rate of the coloration front in the matrices was investigated using a spectroelectrochemical method based oil GITT, allowing the determination of the ""optical"" diffusion coefficient (D(op)) as a function of the amount of lithium ions previously inserted into the matrices. The Values of D(Li) and D(op) suggested the existence of phases with distinct contribution to lithium ion diffusion rates and electrochromic efficiency. Moreover, these results aided a better understanding of the temporal change of current density and absorbance during the ionic electro-insertion, which is important for the possible application of these materials in lithium ion batteries and electrohromic devices.
