YAG phosphor powders doped/codoped with Er(3+)/(Er(3+) + Yb(3+)) have been synthesised by using the solution combustion method. The effect of direct pumping into the (4)I(11/2) level under 980 nm excitation of doped/codoped Er(3+)/Yb(3+)-Er(3+) in Y(3)Al(5)O(12) (YAG) phosphor responsible for an infrared (IR) emission peaking at similar to 1.53 mu m corresponding to the (4)I(13/2)->(4)I(15/2) transition has been studied. YAG exhibits three thermally-stimulated luminescence (TSL) peaks at around 140A degrees C, 210A degrees C and 445A degrees C. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to identify the centres responsible for the TSL peaks. The room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of two distinct centres. One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-value 2.0176 is identified as O(-) ion, while centre II with an isotropic g-factor 2.0020 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionised oxygen vacancy). An additional defect centre is observed during thermal-annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F(+) centre) seems to originate from an F-centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) and these two centres appear to correlate with the observed high-temperature TSL peak in YAG phosphor.

The neurohypophyseal hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a classic mitogen in many cells. In K-Ras-dependent mouse Y1 adrenocortical malignant cells, AVP elicits antagonistic responses such as the activation of the PKC and the ERK1/2 mitogenic pathways to down-regulate cyclin D1 gene expression, which induces senescence-associated beta-galactosidase (SA-beta Gal) and leads to cell cycle arrest. Here, we report that in the metabolic background of Y1 cells, PKC activation either by AVP or by PMA inhibits the PI3K/Akt pathway and stabilises the p27(Kip1) protein even in the presence of the mitogen fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2). These results suggest that p27(Kip1) is a critical signalling node in the mechanisms underlying the survival of the Y1 cells. In Y1 cells that transiently express wild-type p27(Kip1), AVP caused a severe reduction in cell survival, as shown by clonogenic assays. However, AVP promoted the survival of Y1 cells transiently expressing mutant p27-S10A or mutant p27-T187A, which cannot be phosphorylated at Ser10 and Thr187, respectively. In addition, PKC activation by PMA mimics the toxic effect caused by AVP in Y1 cells, and inhibition of PKC completely abolishes the effects caused by both PMA and AVP in clonogenic assays. The vulnerability of Y1 cells during PKC activation is a phenotype conditioned upon K-ras oncogene amplification because K-Ras down-regulation with an inducible form of the dominant-negative mutant H-RasN17 has resulted in Y1 cells that are resistant to AVP`s deleterious effects. These data show that the survival destabilisation of K-Ras-dependent Y1 malignant cells by AVP requires large quantities of the p27(Kip1) protein as well as phosphorylation of the p27(Kip1) protein at both Ser10 and Thr187. A phytochemical investigation of the leaves and stems of Peperomia obtusifolia (Piperaceae) yielded a new flavone C-diglycoside isoswertisin-4`-methyl-ether-2 ``alpha-L-rhamnoside (1), along with four known compounds: isoswertisin-2 ``alpha-L-rhamnoside (2), (+)-diayangambin (3), 2-episesalatin (4) and corchoionoside C (5). The structures of the two flavone C-diglycosides (1, 2) were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and MS spectrometric data. These flavones were evaluated by bioautographic assay against Cladosporium cladosporioides and C. sphaerospermum and showed weak antifungal activity.

The nutritional value of maize seed is limited due to its high content of storage proteins (zeins), which are deficient in essential amino acids such as lysine and tryptophan. In a previous paper, we showed that protein bodies obtained from BR473 maize variety, developed by Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), were mainly constituted by Z27 and a smaller quantity of Z50 gamma-zeins. Besides zein proteins, other not identified protein band in the SDS/PAGE was also observed, which could indicate the presence of non-zein proteins additionally to gamma-zeins. In the present paper, we have demonstrated the presence of non-zein proteins in BR473 maize protein bodies by LC-nanoESI-MS/MS and database searching. This fact could be related to the excellent energetic value and higher protein quality of BR473 maize grains, since high lysine concentration in some maize varieties has been related to the presence of cytoskeleton proteins that are non-zeins. We have identified the following proteins: Brittle-1 protein (chloroplast precursor), Legumin-1, glyceroldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and elongation factor 1-alpha.
