The development of Nb(3)Al and Nb(3)Sn superconductors is of great interest for the applied superconductivity area. These intermetallics composites are obtained normally by heat treatment reactions at high temperature. Processes that allow formation of the superconducting phases at lower temperatures (<1000 degrees C), particularly for Nb(3)Al, are of great interest. The present work studies phase formation and stability of Nb(3)Al and Nb(3)Sn superconducting phases using mechanical alloying (high energy ball milling). Our main objective was to form composites near stoichiometry, which could be transformed into the superconducting phases using low-temperature heat treatments. High purity Nb-Sn and Nb-Al powders were mixed to generate the required superconducting phases (Nb-25at.%Sn and Nb-25at.%Al) in an argon atmosphere glove-box. After milling in a Fritsch mill, the samples were compressed in a hydraulic uniaxial press and encapsulated in evacuated quartz tubes for heat treatment. The compressed and heat treated samples were characterized using X-ray diffractometry. Microstructure and chemical analysis were accomplished using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. Nb(3)Al XRD peaks were observed after the sintering at 800 degrees C for the sample milled for 30 h. Nb(3)Sn XRD peaks could be observed even before the heat treatment. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. In this work, a criterion considering the topological instability (lambda) and the differences in the electronegativity of the constituent elements (Delta e) was applied to the Al-La and Al-Ni-La systems in order to predict the best glass-forming compositions. The results were compared with literature data and with our own experimental data for the Al-La-Ni system. The alloy described in the literature as the best glass former in the Al-La system is located near the point with local maximum for the lambda.Delta e criterion. A good agreement was found between the predictions of the lambda.Delta e criterion and literature data in the Al-La-Ni system, with the region of the best glass-forming ability (GFA) and largest supercooled liquid region (Delta T(x)) coinciding with the best compositional region for amorphization indicated by the lambda.Delta e criterion. Four new glassy compositions were found in the Al-La-Ni system, with the best predicted composition presenting the best glass-forming ability observed so far for this system. Although the lambda.Delta e criterion needs further refinements for completely describe the glass-forming ability in the Al-La and Al-La-Ni systems, the results demonstrated that this criterion is a good tool to predict new glass-forming compositions. Pitzer`s equation for the excess Gibbs energy of aqueous solutions of low-molecular electrolytes is extended to aqueous solutions of polyelectrolytes. The model retains the original form of Pitzer`s model (combining a long-range term, based on the Debye-Huckel equation, with a short-range term similar to the virial equation where the second osmotic virial coefficient depends on the ionic strength). The extension consists of two parts: at first, it is assumed that a constant fraction of the monomer units of the polyelectrolyte is dissociated, i.e., that fraction does not depend on the concentration of the polyelectrolyte, and at second, a modified expression for the ionic strength (wherein each charged monomer group is taken into account individually) is introduced. This modification is to account for the presence of charged polyelectrolyte chains, which cannot be regarded as punctual charges. The resulting equation was used to correlate osmotic coefficient data of aqueous solutions of a single polyelectrolyte as well as of binary mixtures of a single polyelectrolyte and a salt with low-molecular weight. It was additionally applied to correlate liquid-liquid equilibrium data of some aqueous two-phase systems that might form when a polyelectrolyte and another hydrophilic but neutral polymer are simultaneously dissolved in water. A good agreement between the experimental data and the correlation result is observed for all investigated systems. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper the continuous Verhulst dynamic model is used to synthesize a new distributed power control algorithm (DPCA) for use in direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. The Verhulst model was initially designed to describe the population growth of biological species under food and physical space restrictions. The discretization of the corresponding differential equation is accomplished via the Euler numeric integration (ENI) method. Analytical convergence conditions for the proposed DPCA are also established. Several properties of the proposed recursive algorithm, such as Euclidean distance from optimum vector after convergence, convergence speed, normalized mean squared error (NSE), average power consumption per user, performance under dynamics channels, and implementation complexity aspects, are analyzed through simulations. The simulation results are compared with two other DPCAs: the classic algorithm derived by Foschini and Miljanic and the sigmoidal of Uykan and Koivo. Under estimated errors conditions, the proposed DPCA exhibits smaller discrepancy from the optimum power vector solution and better convergence (under fixed and adaptive convergence factor) than the classic and sigmoidal DPCAs. BACKGROUND: Aqueous two-phase micellar systems (ATPMS) are micellar surfactant solutions with physical properties that make them very efficient for the extraction/concentration of biological products. In this work the main proposal that has been discussed is the possible applicability and importance of a novel oscillatory flow micro-reactor (micro-OFR) envisaged for parallel screening and/or development of industrial bioprocesses in ATPMS. Based on the technology of oscillatory flow mixing (OFM), this batch or continuous micro-reactor has been presented as a new small-scale alternative for biological or physical-chemical applications. RESULTS: ATPMS experiments were carried out in different OFM conditions (times, temperatures, oscillation frequencies and amplitudes) for the extraction of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) in Triton X-114/buffer with Cibacron Blue as affinity ligand. CONCLUSION: The results suggest the potential use of OFR, considering this process a promising and new alternative for the purification or pre-concentration of bioproducts. Despite the applied homogenization and extraction conditions have presented no improvements in the partitioning selectivity of the target enzyme, when at rest temperature they have influenced the partitioning behavior in Triton X-114 ATPMS. The purpose of this study was to develop a lyotropic liquid crystalline formulation using the emulsifier vitamin E TPGS and evaluate its behavior after incorporation of a flavonoid, quercetin. The physical (macro and microscopic), chemical (determination of quercetin content by the HPLC method) and functional (determination of quercetin antioxidant activity by DPPH center dot assay) stability of the lamellar liquid crystalline formulation containing flavonoid was evaluated when stored at 4+/-2 degrees C; 30+/-2 degrees C/70+/-5% RH (relative humidity) and 40+/-2 degrees C/70+/-5% RH during 12 months. The lamellar liquid crystalline structure of the formulation was maintained during the experiment, however chemical and functional stability results showed a great influence of the storage period in all conditions tested. A significant decrease in quercetin content (approximately 40%) was detected during the first month of storage and a similar significant loss in antioxidant activity was detected after 6 months. The remaining flavonoid content was unchanged during the final 6 months of the experimental period. The results suggest possible interactions between quercetin and the liquid crystalline formulation, which could inhibit or reduce the quercetin activity incorporated in the system. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that incorporation of quercetin (1%) did not affect the liquid crystalline structure composed of vitamin E TPGS/IPM/PG-H2O (1:1) at 63.75/21.25/15 (w/w/w). Nevertheless, of the total quercetin incorporated in the system only 60% was free to act as an antioxidant.

A catalytic system consisting of iron tetraphenylporphyrin supported on an alumina matrix for oxidation of (-)-cubebin with iodosylbenzene or hydrogen peroxide is reported. Conversion of (-)-cubebin is very efficient (100%) with 100% selectivity producing only (-)-hinokinin when iodosylbenzene is used as the oxidant and 70% conversion with 100% selectivity when hydrogen peroxide is the oxidant at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. The reconstitution of membrane proteins into liposomes is a useful tool to prepare antigenic components that induce immunity. We have investigated the influence of the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC)/cholesterol molar ratio on the incorporation of a GPI-protein from Leishmania amazonensis on liposomes and Langmuir monolayers. The latter system is a well behaved and practical model, for understanding the effect of variables such as surface composition and lipid packing on protein incorporation. We have found that the DPPC/cholesterol molar ratio significantly alters the incorporation of the GPI-protein. In the absence of cholesterol, reconstitution is more difficult and proteoliposomes cannot be prepared, which we correlated with disruption of the DPPC layer. Our results provide important information that Could be employed in the development of a vaccine system for this disease or be used to produce other GPI-systems for biotechnological application. Adrenocorticotropin (ACM) and alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) are peptides which present many physiological effects related to pigmentation, motor and sexual behavior, learning and memory, analgesia, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic processes. The 13 amino acid residues of alpha-MSH are the same initial sequence of ACM and due to the presence of a tryptophan residue in position 9 of the peptide chain, fluorescence techniques could be used to investigate the conformational properties of the hormones in different environments and the mechanisms of interaction with biomimetic systems like sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) micelles, sodium dodecyl sulphate-poly(ethylene oxide) (SDS-PEO) aggregates and neutral polymeric micelles. In buffer solution, fluorescence parameters were typical of peptides containing tryptophan exposed to the aqueous medium and upon addition of surfactant and polymer molecules, the gradual change of those parameters demonstrated the interaction of the peptides with the microheterogeneous systems. From time-resolved experiments it was shown that the interaction proceeded with conformational changes in both peptides, and further information was obtained from quenching of Trp fluorescence by a family of N-alkylpyridinium ions, which possess affinity to the microheterogeneous systems dependent on the length of the alkyl chain. The quenching of Trp fluorescence was enhanced in the presence of charged micelles, compared to the buffer solution and the accessibility of the fluorophore to the quencher was dependent on the peptide and the alkylpyridinium: in ACTH(1-21) highest collisional constants were obtained using ethylpyridinium as quencher, indicating a location of the residue in the surface of the micelle, while in alpha-MSH the best quencher was hexylpyridinium, indicating insertion of the residue into the non-polar region of the micelles. The results had shown that the interaction between the peptides and the biomimetic systems where driven by combined electrostatic and hydrophobic effects: in ACTH(1-24) the electrostatic interaction between highly positively charged C-terminal and negatively charged surface of micelles; and aggregates predominates over hydrophobic interactions involving residues in the central region of the peptide; in alpha-MSH, which presents one residual positive charge, the hydrophobic interactions are relevant to position the Trp residue in the non-polar region of the microheterogeneous systems. Background: Physical activity (PA) has proven benefits in the primary prevention of heart diseases such as heart failure (HF). Although it is well known, HF PA habits and physicians` advice have been poorly described. The aim of this study was to investigate if physicians were advising HF patients to exercise and to quantify patients` exercise profiles in a complex cardiology hospital. Methods: All 131 HF patients (80 male, average age 53 +/- 10 years, NYHA class I-V, left ventricular ejection fraction 35 +/- 11%, 35 ischemic, 35 idiopatic , 32 hypertensive and 29 with Chagas disease) went to the hospital for a HF routine check-up. On this occasion, after seeing the physician, we asked the patients if the physician had advised them about PA. Then, we asked them to fill in the international physical activity questionnaire (IPQA) Short Form to classify their PA level. Results: Our data showed a significant difference between patients who had received any kind of PA advice from physicians (36%) and those who had not (64%, p<0.0001). Using the IPAQ criteria, of the 36% of patients who had received advice, 12.4% were classified as low and 23.6% as moderate. Of the 64% of patients who did not receive advice, 26.8% were classified as lowand 37.2% as moderate. Etiology (except Chagas), functional class, ejection fraction, sex and age did not influence the PA profile. Conclusions: Physicians at a tertiary cardiology hospital were not giving patients satisfactory advice as to PA. Our data supports the need to strengthen exercise encouragement by physicians and for complementary studies on this area. (Cardiol J 2010; 17, 2: 143-148)

Objectives. To assess the elastic modulus (EM), volumetric shrinkage (VS), and polymerization shrinkage stress (PSS) of experimental highly filled nanohybrid composites as a function of matrix composition, filler distribution, and density. Methods. One regular viscosity nanohybrid composite (Grandio, VOCO, Germany) and one flowable nanohybrid composite (Grandio Flow, VOCO) were tested as references along with six highly filled experimental nanohybrid composites (four Bis-GMA-based, one UDMA-based, and one Ormocer (R) -based). The experimental composites varied in filler size and density. EM values were obtained from the ""three-point bending"" load-displacement curve. VS was calculated with Archimedes` buoyancy principle. PSS was determined in 1-mm thick specimens placed between two (poly) methyl methacrylate rods (empty set = 6 mm) attached to an universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using oneway ANOVA, Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05), and linear regression analyses. Results. The flowable composite exhibited the highest VS and PSS but lowest EM. The PSS was significantly lower with Ormocer. The EM was significantly higher among experimental composites with highest filler levels. No significant differences were found between all other experimental composites regarding VS and PSS. Filler density and size did not influence EM, VS, or PSS. Significance. Neither the filler configuration nor matrix composition in the investigated materials significantly influenced composite shrinkage and mechanical properties. The highest filled experimental composite seemed to increase EM by keeping VS and PSS low; however, matrix composition seemed to be the determinant factor for shrinkage and stress development. The Ormocer, with reduced PSS, deserves further investigation. Filler size and density did not influence the tested parameters. (C) 2011 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Deacidification of vegetable oils can be performed using liquid-liquid extraction as an alternative method to the classical chemical and physical refining processes. This paper reports experimental data for systems containing refined babassu oil, lauric acid, ethanol, and water at 303.2 K with different water mass fractions in the alcoholic solvent (0, 0.0557, 0.1045, 0.2029, and 0.2972). The dilution of solvent with water reduced the distribution coefficient values, which indicates a reduction in the loss of neutral oil. The experimental data were used to adjust the NRTL equation parameters. The global deviation between the observed and the estimated compositions was 0.0085, indicating that the model can accurately predict the behavior of the compounds at different levels of solvent hydration. Soybean oil can be deacidified by liquid-liquid extraction with ethanol. In the present paper, the liquid-liquid equilibria of systems composed of refined soybean oil, commercial linoleic acid, ethanol and water were investigated at 298.2 K. The experimental data set obtained from the present study (at 298.2 K) and the results of Mohsen-Nia et al. [1] (at 303.2 K) and Rodrigues et al. [2] (at 323.2 K) were correlated by applying the non-random two liquid (NRTL) model. The results of the present study indicated that the mutual solubility of the compounds decreased with an increase in the water content of the solvent and a decrease in the temperature of the solution. Among variables, the water content of the solvent had the strongest effect on the solubility of the components. The maximum deviation and average variance between the experimental and calculated compositions were 1.60% and 0.89%, indicating that the model could accurately predict the behavior of the compounds at different temperatures and degrees of hydration. The aim of this work was to study the effect of the hydrolysis degree (HD) and the concentration (C(PVA)) Of two types of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and of the type (glycerol and sorbitol) and the concentration (C(P)) of plasticizers on some physical properties of biodegradable films based on blends of gelatin and PVA Using a response-surface methodology. The films were prepared with a film forming solutions (FFS) with 2 g of macromolecules (gelatin+PVA)/100 g de FFS. The responses analyzed were the mechanical properties, the solubility, the moisture Content. the color difference and the opacity. The linear model was statistically significant and predictive for puncture force and deformation. elongation at break, solubility in water, Moisture content and opacity. The CPVA affected strongly the elongation at break of the films. The interaction of the HD and the C(P) affected this property. Moreover. the puncture force was affected slightly by the C(PVA). Concerning the Solubility in water, the reduction of the HD increased it and this effect was greater for high CPVA Values. In general. the most important effect observed in the physical properties of the films was that of the plasticizer type and concentration. The PVA hydrolysis degree and concentration have an important effect only for the elongation at break, puncture deformation and solubility in water. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cutoff lows (COLs) pressure systems climatology for the Southern Hemisphere (SH), between 10 degrees S and 50 degrees S, using the National Center for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP-NCAR) and the ERA-40 European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) reanalyses are analyzed for the period 1979-1999. COLs were identified at three pressure levels (200, 300, and 500 hPa) using an objective method that considers the main physical characteristics of the conceptual model of COLs. Independently of the pressure level analyzed, the climatology from the ERA-40 reanalysis has more COLs systems than the NCEP-NCAR. However, both reanalyses present a large frequency of COLs at 300 hPa, followed by 500 and 200 hPa. The seasonality of COLs differs at each pressure level, but it is similar between the reanalyses. COLs are more frequent during summer, autumn, and winter at 200, 300, and 500 hPa, respectively. At these levels, they tend to occur around the continents, preferentially from southeastern Australia to New Zealand, the south of South America, and the south of Africa. To study the COLs at 200 and 300 hPa from a regional perspective, the SH was divided in three regions: Australia-New Zealand (60 E-130 W), South America (130 degrees W-20 degrees W), and southern Africa (20 degrees W-60 degrees E). The common COLs features in these sectors for both reanalyses are a short lifetime (similar to 80.0% and similar to 70.0% of COLs at 200 and 300 hPa, respectively, persisting for up to 3 days), mobility (similar to 70.0% and similar to 50% of COLs at 200 and 300 hPa, respectively, traveling distances of up to 1200 km), and an eastward propagation.
